VMC PSL 13 Indexes
Commentary: We have numerous indexes to present this contest. So without further ado let me give a brief explanation of them. The The Top 11 Index is made up of all stock being picked at least 5 times in the contest, this index is equally weighted. The Top 182 Index, is also equally weighted, and measures the average performance of all the stocks picked in this contest (Our stock universe). The Average Portfolio Return, measure the average performance of the 55 portfolios. These indexes or averages should be familiar to everyone, as I have presented these in past contest(s).
Other indexes to be presented: Average Wildcard Index this index measures the average performance of the 18 wildcards chosen in the contest, this index is equally weighted. Average Non Wildcard Index This index measures the average performance of the 164 non-wildcard entries, and this index is also equally weighted as well. Average Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What This basically means is there are 20 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like ASUR has 2 units because it was picked 2 times in the contest. Average Non Wildcard Index (Weighted Average) this index only difference from the Average Non Wildcard Index is this index uses a weighted average approach. What this basically means is there are 310 units in this portfolio, obviously the majority of stock only have 1 unit, but a stock like BSPM.OB is weighted much more heavily and has 9 units because it was picked 9 times in the contest. Next, we get to the Average Portfolio (Original) the only difference between this index and the average portfolio return is it excludes the impact of transactions, meaning if no one could make transactions (Which is obviously not the case) this would be the average portfolio return. The Champions Index is basically and index that takes the average of the all the former PSL champions in PSL 13. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Hope you enjoy the info.

Yes, she was forced to remove ...
all nose-rings and ear-rings and jewelry
before being tied to the track.
PS: She spoke 5 languages fluently, but
French was her native tongue.
PPS: I'm not sure of her religion, but
probably ... Catholic ... just like ... better
not go there ... .
Re: My terrible Dream ...
For those of you who have asked, the
beautiful young lady in my dream was
tied to the tracks in a sunny-side-up
position ... .
Double down ROIAK with cash position if it isn't too late. I don't know if the 4:20 rule is in effect for this or if that is just to cancel a transaction.
Nice start congrats...
That is what makes the PSL contests so hard. We must pick 6 stocks which we think will do well in a 12 week period. However, the movement of these stocks hardly ever coinsides with the start of the contest. A more realistic approach would be to let everyone start with cash and let them buy 6 stocks 1/6 of the total cash one at a time whenever they feel the time is right.
MSGI:
Why not pick China if it is a matter of waiting until the trend starts down? The point is that who knows when that will happen. I'm betting on 3.5 months.
Len
Len, it is bound to happen sooner or later. Is is hard to predict just when that will happen. I know that you are not a trader, but if I had your conviction that it will happen during PSL13, I think that I would have picked some US treasury ETF's like IEF or ITE and then switched to the ones that you have picked that are short the market and China when there was evidence that trend had started.
MSGI:
I'm banking on China going south and shorts going north. Remember, the first shall be last and the last shall be first.
Len
Thanks for the info. I did build view. I don't see * in front of those that have news. Do you really think yahoo has more complete news sources than google ? i know google gives real time quote while yahoo does not for free account.
Rumor has it this is the little blond tart that has been distracting Lentinman of late.....

I had a DREAM ... !!!
last night ... I dreamed I was in France ... in the
distance I could see a high-speed passenger
train approaching at 200 mph ... next I looked
directly in front of me and saw a beautiful naked
woman in her early twenties, tied to the tracks ...
then ... SWISH ... the train passed by me ... and
with great dread, my eyes returned to the tracks
and I saw that the beautiful young lady had been
turned to bloody, raw HAMBURGER ... !!!
I prayed: "Lord, what on earth does this terrible
dream mean ???" Here's the answer I got:
(1) The Train = Lenny Tinman
(2) The beautiful lady = Western Civilization
Good work Rogue ... !!!
You passed him whose name we ...
dare NOT speak ... .
If Len would have stayed with his China picks, he would be in 4th place.
at least I'm ahead of Lentinman ...
at least until he ditches his blonde babe, and gets back to work ...
Yessss....42nd out of 57 players.
I love it when a plan comes together...

You can easily put a portfolio of stocks together in Yahoo and get a view that will put an asterisk by each symbol that has news.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=DNDN
Go to that link, then my portfolios, you can figure it out from there. You might need to set up a Yahoo id (free) if you don't already have one.
A caution--there are stock message boards as well on Yahoo but they are very frothy and full of hype.
NEWS for stocks
This is simple question for many of you.
How do you get most recent relivant news for stocks one holds ? The usual place like google portfolio, yahoo seems to have some but lately I found they missed some important news from different sources. Since I start following more OTC picks from this board and VMC board, the issue becomes severe. I did see VMC ibox has www.prnewswirte.com/news listed. But I don't like to login there type in my 30+ symbols to get latest news. how do you guys do that ?
AFOP, one of my picks, has some huge volume today, setting a new 52-week high:
Day's Range: 1.19 - 1.35
52wk Range: 0.57 - 1.35
Volume: 369,337

He got fleeced...
I just read Mr. Sheep's blog...
it seems he's quite upset with his BSPM and SMID picks; he feels like someone might have pulled the wool over his eyes on those two. On a positive note, he's quite satisfied with BSPM's OTC remedy for hoof and mouth disease, and he can't come up with any concrete reasons for SMID's recent weakness...
Apparently his blog updates are very sporadic as they have to share one laptop on the farm.
Since I was partly to blame for not catching it. I charged him only 1 trade, because he fixed it on the first day he could
MSGI:
Done. Thanks.
Rogue had six short positions and it didn't get caught initially. He had to unshorten four of them. I think SSK made an allowance on transactions for that.
Len
Len, You should probably remove the word "SAMPLE" 11 times above the Trades and Freezes the next time that you update the I-Box.
BTW, Look at Rogue go. He has used up all of his trades already and I thought I was the excessive trader in these contests.
NSOM Challenge -
BSPM.ob (2.03) - China pharmaceutical stock looks undervalued compared with peers. EPS of $0.16 in Q2 up 100% y/y. Growth initiatives are ongoing.
DGSE (1.35) Jewlery maker reported EPS of $0.07 for Q2 and the 2nd half is seasonally strong due to the holiday shopping season.
IEHC.ob (3.60) Electronic contract manufacturer reported EPS of $0.15 for Q2 despite the weak economy. Results should improve as demand rebounds.
ROIAK (0.64) Radio company posted EPS of $0.12 in Q2 in a big turnaround quarter driven by cost cutting. Huge share buyback program reduced share count by 40% y/y. Response to SEC comment letter is pending, so a bit of concern there.
RUTH (3.80) Upscale steakhouse chain has fared well despite a sharp drop in revenues due to the recession. EPS of Q2 EPS of $0.13 excluding a charge of $0.03. A very respectable bottom line desite y/y same store (restaurant) sales down 23%. Appears nicely positioned for a strong rebound in profits once the economy improves .... RUTH traded in the mid $20's back in '06 and '07 !
SGZH.ob (7.45) China coal company posted EPS of $0.81 versus $0.31 y/y for Q2 on a sharp rise in revenues. Looks like a good candidate for an upgrade to the AMEX which could double the share price.
when all else fails, lower your standards...
As long as I beat Len Tinman ...
I will consider PSL-13 and my dismal life a
roaring success ... .
Come on Rogue ... move your bloody as*
in front of "The Tin Man ... " ... !!!!!!!
that dude is such a show off, lol.

NSOM Challenge.
$CASH$ Can never have enough cash.
CDE - Silver and Gold stock. Gold at $1000. Sooner or later people will buy these stocks.
CGLD.OB - Small gold stock. Is profitable which is unique for many of these.
NGD - Larger gold company. 150K ounces in 2009.
SWC - Expect Palladium and Platnium prices to go up.
MDVX.ob (WC)- Modavox is protecting their IP and has sued AOL and sent Cease and Desist letter to Yahoo. Modavox has just sent a settlement offer to AOL that AOL requested after AOL took depositions of Modavox technical people. Yahoo is also in talks with Modavox. One of these two should take the stock higher.
Nsom challenge
AOB - Feels like a $10 stock in the making. Has numerous products on the "must buy" list in China. EPS last quarter brought the stock down into the buy range. Load up on dips near $5. Looking for a 30% gain on this one in the PSL timeframe, but could easily do more.
ASUR - my wildcard, and it definitely is that. Recently overthrew the board, and is now controlled by hedgies. It's also a low-price-listed-stock, and those have one-by-one been running in spurts. Let's shoot for .50, or 100% gain on this.
BSPM.OB - Chinese pharma that was a growth play, but due to recent dip in price is now growth + value. Microcaps are getting love right now, and BSPM will eventually join to the tune of 30-50% in the PSL timeframe.
CDBT.OB - Chinese biotech, but really they're on the feed side of the equation. Awfully cheap compared to growth and value. I won't freeze this for any gain under 75%.
WKBT.OB - Gaining VMC popularity, and rightly so. Seems to have a seller right now, but when the ship gets righted, 50+% is in the cards.
EXPECTED RETURN FOR PSL13 (assuming market cooperation): 40-60%
NSOMNIYAK Challenge
My picks
AYSI - Dionne Warwick told me :)
Seriously the tipoff was the new mill opening up and the large contract in the 10Q. The recent blockbuster announcement caught me and everyone else by surprise (dumb luck). Still looks like an amazing deal under 2.00 as I expect earnings to come in at a minimum of .07/share and numbers should only get better going forward.
TBUS - To me one of the more exciting picks out there for price appreciation. Super low forward PE given the share price of 2.34 with .09 in EPS last quarter and guidance of .22 over the next 2 quarters. In addition this is an Obama type pick as the company makes equipment for public transit with the prospect of massive funding increases looming.
DGSE - Sells gold and precious metals as well as jewelry. EPS of .07 last Q and .06 the previous Q excluding discontinued ops with a share price around 1.40. The companies stronger quarter is coming up. In addition to the low price on an EPS basis this is also a play on a rise in gold.
RODM - Investment banking rocket that earned .41 last Q. This already had alot of appreciation but given the momentum and the prospect of an even better quarter coming up seemed to be worth a shot
SMID - The Rodney Dangerfield of stocks with 3 big quarters in a row selling infrastructure stuff including EPS of .15 last quarter. Dirt cheap around 2 bucks and am hoping someone notices the numbers and that it catches fire.
EGAN - call center software provider. They preannounced revs and earnings implying somewhere in the range of .03 in EPS against a share price in the mid .60's. Seems like a good candidate to go north of a buck when earnings are official.

Nsomniyak Challenge:
AGT Apollo Gold is a new producer operating the Black Fox mine in Canada. AGT is forecasting 150,000 oz per year once they reach full production. They have had some challenges during startup due to low grades in the open pit. Processing thru the mill is ahead of schedule, with the company reporting 1800tpd several weeks ahead of schedule. Today they announced a toll milling agreement for some lower grade ore that has been stockpiled.
CHGY.ob Coal producer in China that has recently reopened their mine. Should dramatically improve production, revs and eps.
FR.to First Majestic is currently finishing the major expansion at their largest silver mine in Mexico. The La Encantada mine is their largest and lowest cost mine. Production is forecast to increase from 800tpd to 3500tpd after the expansion is done. Production should increase from 4.2million oz in 2008 to over 5million oz in 2009 and 6 million oz in 2010.
LMA.to La Mancha is operating three smaller gold mines in Africa and Australia. LMA is minority partner on the two African mines but the recently opened Australian mine, which LMA operates, has boosted production and eps. LMA is guiding for 100,000 oz in 2009. They have a 4th mine that should add 30K oz in 2010. It is a short life mine with only 27 months of proven reserves but should provide revs to fund exploration internally, minimizing dilution. Cashflow of .08 in Q2 so still cheap.
LPIH.ob Longwei Petroleum is a Chinese wholesale fuel distributor. They currently operate one facility with storage capacity of 50,000 tonnes of fuel. They are building a new facility in another city in the province that has 70,000 tonnes storage. Revs should more than double by 2010. Currently selling for a forward p/e of 6 before the new facility opens.
TELT.ob Telt posted a huge qtr of .20eps for Q2. The improved performance over losses in 2008 came from closing a facility in Salt Lake City. Company is generating increased revs and lower costs. Currently selling for .55 so unbelievably cheap if they can continue profitable operations anywhere close to Q2.
Telt.ob will need a couple more qtrs of profitable operations before investors bid up the share price.

The winner gets... A year's subscription to IHUB....plus pride in being the #1 performer against a lot of very good stockpickers on the best stockpicking board on the internet. And, they get highlighted on the VMC Champions Board. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=4067
ELIGIBILITY Solely up to the moderators of this board. Any contestant who is booted from IHUB during the contest is ineligible to win any individual PSLcontest.
A FEW POINTS
All picks will be "blind" picks. By that, it means they will have to be based upon the person's best guess rather than by seeing what others have done. When the picks are made, they will be deleted (hidden) from the board. Once the deadline passes, all picks by each person will be shown in the Ibox.
PSL13 will begin on Tuesday, September 8 and end on Friday, December 11th. Everyone must have their picks in before September 4th at 4PM EST. All beginning prices will be as of the the close on Friday, September 4th.
All picks need to be done on this board and not via PM so that we have a record. Also, you can never be sure if whoever you send it to is even around or reading PMs. If you post it on the board, it is permanent and fixed in time.
We will list each person's picks in the Ibox in alphabetical order.
CONTEST RULES
Shown below are all the rules with respect to PSL12. THERE IS ONE NEW RULE MODIFICATION.
New Rule: "Buy a Transaction"
After a contestant uses their four trades they have the right to buy up to three trades at a cost.
The first transaction costs 5% of the unit (or stock position) you are trading out of.
The second transaction costs 10% of (see above).
The third transaction costs 15% of (see above).
1) Pick exactly 6 stocks that you believe will have the greatest appreciation during the period of the contest.
2) Only cash dividends of over 10% will be adjusted for. Stock dividends and splits will always be adjusted for.
3) Each stock must be at least 25 cents as of the deadline for making your picks. If one of your stocks is below 25 cents on the close, you will have until midnight (assuming no news) to pick another stock that qualifies. If not, a cash position will be assigned to your portfolio.
4) Stocks must meet VMC earnings & reporting requirements (see explanation immediately below this list) with the exception that one WILD CARD pick will be allowed (see #16 below).
5) A minimum $5,000 average daily dollar volume for the previous three months is required on any original or any new stock. This is calculated as the Yahoo 3-month average shares traded times the closing price of the stock.
6) Foreign stocks are allowed as long as they are trackable on Yahoo. Some foreign stocks have pinky versions and that is ok.
7) One of your 6 original positions can be a cash position.
8) No options or warrants or mutual funds. ETF's are ok.
9) No limit on market cap.
10) It is not required that you disclose whether you own these stocks.
11) First come, first serve. All GROUPS of 6 must be unique. If a person already has your exact 6 choices you will need to make at least one substitution. This has not happened so far and is very unlikely.
12) You will receive 4 transactions during the contest. You can use 0, 1, 2, 3 or all four. That is up to you.
13) All transactions will be done as of the next closing price. If the transaction is done after the close, it will be as of the close of the following market day. There is a one half hour grace period to allow for UNDOING a trade - assuming there is no news involved to either part of the transaction during that half hour. This is because many closing prices are not available until 20 minutes after the close.
14) A transaction can be a trade or an unfreeze (just like it sounds). A double down (see below) is also a transaction. All transactions should be done on the PSL board - and not via PM.
DOUBLE DOWNS
--- A double down will be allowed where you can trade one of your stocks (or cash) into a "double" position of one of your other stocks (or cash).
--- Once double downed, always doubled downed. In other words, when two stocks are merged into one, they cannot be unmerged. You can trade, freeze or unfreeze the merged unit just as you would a single unit.
--- Once two stocks have been merged via a double down they cannot be double downed into another stock or another stock cannot be double downed into them. A maximum of 2+2 of the 6 units can be merged together. In other words, you can have two double downs at once with two other stocks that are not doubled - ie 4 stocks and 6 units.
--- A maximum of two double downs are allowed per contest.
--- You cannot double down until two weeks have passed - after the close of Thursday, September 17 - which will allow it to be in effect as early as September 21st - two weeks into the contest.
--- Only stocks that meet the earnings rule, the volume rule and the .25 rule can be double downed into.
15) Buy a Transaction: These are additional transactions beyond the four free ones. The first transaction costs 5%. The second transaction costs 10%. The third transaction costs 15%.
16) Any stock - whether frozen or not - can be traded for cash, or another stock. In all cases, the value of the entity that you are trading away must be reinvested in total into the new entity.
17) There will be one Wild Card allowed. One of your picks can deviate from the VMC rule - either in terms of earnings or in terms of being a non-reporting pinky.
18) You are only allowed up to two short positions.
SHORT POSITIONS: A short position must take the form of any ETF. Shown below are four double-beta shorts against the corresponding index...
--- QID: Nasdaq 100
--- SDS: S&P 500
--- MZZ: S&P MidCap 400
--- DXD: Dow Jones Industrial Average
and one single beta short.
--- DOG: Dow Jones Industrial Average
19) A stock does not trade the day AFTER you pick it.
Trade: If one stock trades - whether Stock A (Sell) Or Stock B (Buy) you get a cash position and a transaction is used. If neither stock trades, the transaction is void.
Freeze: If you freeze a stock, whether it trades the following day or not is irrelevant. The freeze takes affect.
Unfreeze: If you unfreeze a stock, the unfreeze is voided and no transaction is used.
20) The 15% rule is designed specifically to discourage picking stocks that have low liquidity. Thus risk is associated with shooting the moon on a potentially bogus trade. However, this rule is NEGATED if the first trade the following day has a dollar volume of at least $50,000 OR if the stock ends above +15% on $100,000 in dollar volume.
---If you make a trade, and the stock you bought opens the next day up 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. The stock you sold turns into cash. 1 Transaction used.
---If you unfreeze a stock and it opens the next day at 15% or more on no news (and closes above 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
---If you sell or freeze a stock and it opens the next day down 15% or more on no news (and closes below 15%), the trade is voided. 1 Transaction used.
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens +15%+. Irrelevant
-- Own ABC. You sell or freeze. It opens -15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens +15%+. Rule applies
-- Don't own ABC. You buy or unfreeze. It opens -15%+. Irrelevant
21) If a stock is halted for any reason and a person freezes it during the time it is halted, their price for the contest will be whatever it is frozen at AS LONG AS it remains frozen until the contest ends. Otherwise, the price will be the close of the first day of trading after the halt is lifted. Also, you cannot use those funds to buy or trade into any other stock while it is halted - just as in real life.
22) Fill/Kill will be offered to anyone who wants to not have to watch the screen every day. It will be for one week only and only one at a time per person. It is based on closing prices. Explanation of Fill/Kill: http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11239102
23) If a company gets sold during the contest, all normal rules apply. See this post. http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=11259177
24) DIGIRULE: This is a rule that comes into play only at the very end of the contest and only if the championship is on the line. It is designed to prevent extremely small dollar trades from affecting the outcome.
25) The deadline for all transactions is the market close on Friday, December 4 (one week before the end of the contest). A freeze (no longer a transaction) can be made up to the last day.
EARNINGS REQUIREMENT: To qualify, a stock (other than the wild card) must meet VMC earnings rules which are explained in the IBox on the VMC board http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=3251 Essentially, it means that a stock must report** quarterly for at least a year or as long as it has been public. No exceptions. Secondly, the company must have earnings in the most recent quarter - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent two quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent three quarters - or if not, more earnings than losses in the most recent four quarters. In other words, there must be some interval of time (1, 2, 3 or 4 quarters) where the company has positive earnings.
