Yes, I own a lot...here's a recent post from the VMC board...
Anybody want to buy $1 for $.70???
ALTX, currently offered at $.23/share, has cash (net of all liabilities) of $.33/share.
I've seen shell companies with no assets whatsoever with bigger market caps than ALTX's current market cap.
I think ALTX is a win/win...either they liquidate and you make 40% on your money, or they ink a merger with another company in need of growth capital. In the latter case, the stock could turn out to be a multi-bagger.
knowledge are you in ALTX?
Thanks MSGI. Caught it right after I posted it. Tried to delete it, but could only edit it.
bluebear, I think that you put these on the wrong board. Need to put them on the PSL5 board.

IBOX UPDATED WITH ALL PSL4 RESULTS:
All the returns that SSK and I posted after PSL4 ended are summarized in the bottom half of the IBOX.

I actually would NOT want to pick my team mates, and, if I did, would certainly not want to pick a bunch who were already in the stocks or niches I was in.
I probably already have a dialog with those people, publicly on the boards or via PM, about those stocks and niches.
What I want out of PSL is ideas that I would not think of myself. I want new ideas, and would like some diversification for my team.
I take the universe of stocks picked by my teammates (4 teammates x 6 stocks, less duplicates) and get a universe of 15-24 stocks to follow, some of which I already lknow of, others new. This is List 1.
List 2 is the same thing using 4 other VMC-ers whose results have been good or whose thinking I really like or can relate to (pick your own favorites).
List 3 is results-driven--the top 10-15 stocks after a week into the contest. Let Mr. market pick them.
Excluding duplicates from these lists, that gives me maybe 40 stocks, including maybe 15-20 new-to-me ideas, to look into. This is a practical way of getting a focus on a manageable number of stocks, rather than the several hundred in the contest.
Rule Modification for PSL5:
As I have stated, the rules are made up by a majority of BW, SSK and myself. In the case of this rule modification, I was opposed, but outvoted 2-1.
The new rule will be four (vs three) transactions for PSL5.
Here are the relevant statistics. We only had 2 transactions in PSL2, so I'm not going to bother with it. In both PSL3 and PSL4, we had three transactions.
Contest Contestants Used All 3 Percentage
Personally, my opinion is that if 32% of the people used all three available transactions, the only meaningful number is that 68% did NOT. Thus, I see zero urgency to increase the number of available transactions. Of course, 32% is more than 22%, but we have such a small sample, we cannot assume that PSL5 would be a higher number than 32%.
PSL3 88 19 22%
PSL4 85 27 32%
I think it could be argued that if we allowed 10 transactions that some percentage of us (maybe 10%+) would use them all. Of course, it is also true that just because 32% did, doesn't mean that a single one of those people would necessarily use a 4th transaction (if available).
I will strenuously object to anything beyond 4 because even at 4 it is more trading (on average) than the typical VMC'er does from all the information I have gathered. Since PSL should represent (as close as possible) real life, any more than 4 would be ridiculous IMO.
Finally, the number of people that used all 6 of their transactions in both PSL3 and PSL4 is 13 out of 54 people that participated in both. That's 24%. Again, based on that, I see no urgency at all to increase the number.
Clearly, some will like it and BW and SSK have their own reasons, but I'm just presenting the statistical facts. And, fact #1 is that 2 is greater than 1.
Len
Cl001:
I can't imagine the logistics of that one and how someone(s) wouldn't feel left out or have their feelings hurt, etc. Maybe sometime in the future. For now, I'm seeding based on the cumulative return ratings of the first four contests.
Len
Len:
How about let us to pick our own teammates in PSL5? We can have a "metalheads" team against other investment strategy team, like Chinese micro team etc. That should be fun.
All of mine were RED, so I sold them for tax write offs.
1 more minute and first time all my picks in green ( in one day),lol.
KIK:
I thought I could skate by and let that go unnoticed. In fact, I have a whole list of "Special K" rules. I thought they were pretty clever and I was going to publish them right after PSL4 rather authoritatively just to see how many people here might actually believe I was serious.
But, then came the fall....... and, the best laid plans....
Len
len, you said...
"There may have been something that someone mentioned early in PSL4 that we said we would consider for PSL5, but I don't recall what it would have been. If someone remembers anything like that, feel free to bring it up."
I seem to recall that you guys were going come up with a special set of KIK rules so that I'd "have to carry more in my pack up the hill" or something...
If you need any suggestions, just let me know :)
So they can have a chance to go to AMEX, NASDAQ or NYSE later on.. (AOB etc).. CXTI.OB next..
Also so they can raise money through the public (Global)
Also they have to be able to comply with the US regulation (SEC/Sarb OX).
Stan
PSL5:
Now that PSL4 is over, I just want to say thanks to everyone that participated. I consider it another big success - very educational. There is no reason to assume PSL5 will be any different.
I created the PSL5 board this afternoon. Some of you have already sniffed it out. Here is the link. Please bookmark it. As you may recall, the deadline for it will be Friday, January 12th at the close.
http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=15711763
I have not updated this IBOX (PSL4) to include the RESULTS yet. If you want to know what to expect, just look at the IBOX for PSL2 or PSL3. It will look like that. Of course, in the meantime, all the results were published here by either SSK or myself from the 15th to the 17th.
Also, I have not begun work on the PSL5 IBOX yet. I will get to that as soon as I can.
We don't anticipate any changes in the rules. We're pretty darn happy with everything the way it works. The suggestions that people have had have definitely improved it from PSL1 to PSL4.
There may have been something that someone mentioned early in PSL4 that we said we would consider for PSL5, but I don't recall what it would have been. If someone remembers anything like that, feel free to bring it up. But, don't expect changes. One of the great things about PSL contests in the future is that you will know the deal because it is always the same.

CHAMPION'S BOARD IBOX UPDATED:
Bobwins has added his commentary to the Champion's board for all to read.
http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=4067
Len
BW, I will be happy to pick up the tab. In a few years, lunch with BW will be auctioned on ebay from millions of $$$, I am happy to be the first of honor!
Yes, picking a good Chinese micro cap is like picking a needle from hey stacks. The best Chinese companies are listed in HK, the second best tech companes are listed on Nasdaq. Now the China stock market is super hot, why does a decent Chinese company want to be listed on the OTC? Losers?
Thanks hog. we both like chinese stocks. we seem to be good at it.. we like value microcap with good business model.. period.. (doesn't matter if it is in USA or Foreign country)
CXTI, AOB, SUWN, ETLT, HQSM, NMKT went up today... looks like the PSL ended a week too early for us.. ;)
nice 33% return on PSL4 hog...
Stan
And the crazy thing is stanlu is the chinese man...CL001 would not like many of his picks...I'm shooting from the hip on this as I am not looking at Stan's picks..but he and I lean to the red country for some picks..hog
43% return per PSL. not too shabby. but the 144% annualize return is just crazy (crazy nice though). hope I can keep them up (which is almost impossible). I'm sure it (the average and the annualize return) will go down a lot as we go through several more PSL...
Has Bob give his victory speech by the way?
Awesome contest.. and again.. I feel very honored to be part of this group..
Stan
wtg tmcal6!
btw, you have also won the Feinstein/Pelosi/Kennedy responsible fiscal policy award...
SSK, Thanks, I finally won something, Most Benefited from the Consistency Ranking Formula. Mr. MBCRF. Can't say it is a great achievement, and it took manipulation of numbers to even dream it up, but thanks just the same. LOL
Congratulations on the victory, Bob!
My botch of the Pachinko World (PCHW) trade put me in a World of hurt. Lesson learned for next contest...
Only be 2.8 - peat without e-tim. tim (sob...)
Just drop the whole names thing then. We will attempt to extend the Team 1 dynasty.
Three-peat, three-peat, three-peat...
nsom:
We had team names in PSL3, but thought it was kind of hokey, so we dropped them.
The reason we don't know whether it will be 4 or 5 is wholly dependent on the number of people who end up in the contest. That is something we won't know until after the deadline on January 12th.
It isn't just a matter of being divisible by either 4 or 5, but also a function of how many weeks in the contest and how to make the schedule work out.
Len
nsom, what a hoot! Thanks to you, Len, Skills and the rest for providing a lighter side to what is normally pretty serious business. Whatever team I end up on, I'll continue to enjoy the contests. Now, if I could only entice my real portfolio to perform as well as my PSL portfolios...Tim
Len - Why don't we wait until you know whether 4 or 5 person teams work best for you in PSL5.
If you go with 4 man teams, we could always call ourselves "We Want Tim" or "Free Tim Now" or "The Team without Tim" :)
Or "the team formerly known as Team 1, until Len kicked Tim out"
Not sure I want to be on the only team with a name. Talk about having a target on your back. Maybe we could take a page from The Far Side and call the team "Bummer of a Birth Mark, Digi".
Don't see any reason why other teams could not have names, only problem seems to be picking a name before you know who is on the team. Just an administrative issue--depends on how much additional admin hassle you want to take on.
Anyway, "Team 1" has been lucky for us.
Any time we are in the same city, I will buy lunch. Actually I was in Newark yesterday. The trip home was an adventure. Delayed one day from Costa Rica due to cancelled flight from Houston and then a trip to Newark that was delayed 5 hrs due to bad weather and lack of power to Seatac Air Traffic Control. Bobwins
Nsom & Team 1:
If the teams end up only 4 players (and assuming all of you participate in PSL5, then Team 1 would be made up of...
Digitech, Nsomniyak, Stanu78 and Networm. If there are 5 per team, then it would also include Erehwontim.
If you guys want to give your team a name, decide among yourselves. It seems perfectly reasonable that the top 5 people (cumulative) two PSL's in a row should have the ability to have a unique name even if the rest of us are Team 2, Team 3, etc.
Len
Thanks a million for doing this additional analysis. And yes I realize that it has been a lot of additional work but I hope we all appreciate that the findings are very useful. I have no idea how others approach this contest but I approach it as a mini replication of my own portfolio - I chose 4 mining stocks (3 with earnings and one speculative junior), 1 oil and gas service stock and 1 technology. And yes my personal portfolio has about 60 % invested in Canadian miners. All of these stocks I owned at the beginning of the contest, fortunately I sold the speculative miner very early for my own account (it had risen sharply before the contest started) but made the mistake of continuing to hold it for the contest. I have thought about taking bigger chances just for the contest (like picking all mining stocks, or picking a group of stocks with high momentum, or only low priced stocks). I have rejected these ideas for two main reasons: (1) what if they did really well compared with my own portfolio, I would be killing myself for not actually investing as I had for the contest and (2) I do not want to be picking stocks or a portfolio of stocks that I would not be endorsing for my own investment purposes. So investing in only one sector or investing in any really speculative stocks I will not do as others might get hurt by following such actions. In the case of SKR.TO, I was the only one who picked it and there was only one other individual (from this board) who had some money in it (and I informed him by private email when I was exiting that stock). We both made money on it.
I would add that anyone who thinks he/she should simply buy the stocks (for their own real portfolio) as picked by Mr Lamb for example should look closely at the picks, if they are all from one sector you had better be comfortable with that sector going forward and if none are household names you better go all in (that is invest in all 6 stocks for it is often one stock that really skews the results).
Thanks nsom... all of us were great I must say.. :)
Aweseome prediction though...
I was worried when you made that bold call out of the blue and now I am relieved.. a lot of pressure right there... glad that it all worked out... being in a team #1 is already a burden.. a lot of expectation to perform well..
Stan
Thanks Len, I forgot that our contest is more than 3 months each (about 15 weeks and vary for each PSLs)
Stan
Stan--we couldn't have done it without you. I predicted you would come off the canvas and help us win and you came through!
We are building a dynasty under the catchy name "Team 1"!
ANNUALIZED RETURN:
"Say someone who is average 50% (150%, 25%, 0%, 25%) over 4 PSL, is that mean his annualize return = 200% from (50 X 4) or 400% from ((1.5 ^ 4) - 1). Or we should just use the quarterly return ((2.5 X 1.25 X 1.00 X 1.25)-1) = 290%."
If a person had averages of 150%, 25%, 0% and 25% over 4 PSL contests, their average would be 50% PER CONTEST. However, that is not 50% per year or per quarter or anything else. The contests were 6 months, 15 weeks, 15 weeks and 13 weeks.
It is correct to say that their overall return is 290% ((2.5 x 1.25 x 1.00 x 1.25)-1). But, 290% over an 18 month period (which is what PSL1-PSL4 has been) would translate to a 148% annualized return - compounded monthly.
In otherwords, if your monthly return was 7.85%, that would be 148% for 12 months and 290% for 18 months.
Since Stanu78 has the highest return for anyone who has participated in all 4 contests, I will do the math. His returns were 36.80%, 96.99%, 15.04% and 23.22%. His total average PER CONTEST is 43.01%.
His total return is +282% ((1.3680 x 1.9699 x 1.1504 x 1.2322)-1). His ANNUALIZED return is 144% based on a monthly compounded rate of 7.73%.
Len
I think I found the problem with geometrically compounding the growth, which is, that each contestant isn't starting te PSL with the same amount of money.
with the aritmethic total return or aritmethic average, we might be comparing apple to apple .. forcing everyone to start with the same amount of money for each PSL (reset/disregarding the gain, or loss that we have from previous PSLs.
Stan
This is awesome Len, seems that team #1 will consist of the same people again (same with the PSL 4). this will be fun. instead of changing teamates every PSL, there is some continuity/longer term relationship and building cammaraderie
And thanks for the congrats. I feel so happy and honored to be part of this community (all 90+ awesome VMCers)

AVERAGE RANK FOR ALL PSL's:
Shown below are the Top-40 by Average Rank for all PSL contests. In order to qualify, a person must have participated in at least 3 of the 4 contests. Shown is the return and rank for each person for each contest. Then, to the right is the Average Return and Average Rank. This group is sorted by Average Rank.
Congratulations to nsomniyak - who has the lowest cumulative Average Rank of 12.67%. Congratulations to Erehwontim, who has the lowest cumulative Average Rank for anyone who has participated in all four contests.
Also, note that if you see a "0.00% 0", that means that person did not participate in that PSL contest.

Can we calculate annual return rate from the average return?
say someone who is average 50% (150%, 25%, 0%, 25%) over 4 PSL, is that mean his annualize return = 200% from (50 X 4) or 400% from ((1.5 ^ 4) - 1)
or we should just use the quarterly return ((2.5 X 1.25 X 1.00 X 1.25)-1) = 290%

Congratulations to Digitech - who has the highest cumulative average of 45.93%. Congratulations to Stanu78, who has the highest cumulative average for anyone who has participated in all four contests.
Also, since this is the measurement I use to create teams, if there are 5 members to a team in PSL5, the same group of five will be together for Team 1 as before - and remember, Team 1 won the contest.
Also, note that if you see a "0.00% 0", that means that person did not participate in that PSL contest.

Congrats cl1001, Bob and Team #1 (whoever that is).
I had a lot of fun... ups and downs... but mostly fun..
Thanks a bunch to Ssk and Len.

Is this mean, we will listen to Bob's speech (victory speech)?
I can't wait. :)

AVERAGE RETURN vs AVERAGE RANK:
In the next two posts I will show the top-40 by average return and by average rank over the course of the four PSL contests.
Average return is a better measurement in most cases. For example, let's say Person A had +200% in the first PSL contest and the next closest was Person B at +50%. Now, let's say the next two contests were shown below:
Person A Person B
If you use total return, Person A had an average return of 96.7%, while Person B had an average return of 50%. However, if you use rankings, Person A had an average rank of 2.33 compared to Person B's average rank of 2.00.
Return Rank Return Rank
Contest 1 200% 1 50% 2
Contest 2 45% 3 50% 2
Contest 3 45% 3 50% 2
Clearly, IMO, average return is superior to average rank based on this example.
However, there is also a weakness in average return. Say, for example, that the Person C played only in Contest 1 and Contest 2, while Person D played in all three. Let's also say that the average return by all contestants in Contest 1 was 50%, the average return by all contestants in Contest 2 was 50%, but the average return by all contestants in Contest 3 was only 10% because the market had a major correction.
So, consider this possibility:
Person C Person D
Using this example, Person C would have the higher return average (70% versus 60%), but a lower rank average of 8 versus 6.
Return Rank Return Rank
Contest 1 70% 8 75% 6
Contest 2 70% 8 75% 6
Contest 3 - - 30% 6
Who is better? Well, IMO, clearly Person D is better. It wasn't because C was better that they missed Contest 3 and therefore, Person D should not be penalized.
So, there you have two perfect examples of why one is better than the other. Because of that, you can choose either one as your favorite method. I'm listing the top-40 in both.
Len
Thank you SSK and Len for the efforts you guys put in organizing PSL4! I really appreciated.
I proudly accept the back to back individual tournament championship though my rank dropped from 3 to 6. I was very very luck that LMC was rumored to acquire HBM. Otherwise I probably had no chance against the might BW!
You guys should spend some time relaxing in the Caribbeans! Especially Len, since your house is always below 60! The sun is so bright, the water is so clean and the sky is so clear! The temperature is always in the 80s without burning any ngas!
Congrats Señor RobertoWins! Sorry you didn't win the triple crown, I stopped you, the mighty, late booming BW for the second straight tournament! The rumor of LMC taking over HBM helped me a lot, since you double downed LMC while I had HBM. In real life, I have both.
Thank you for the TRGD.pk! The Santa TRGD Clause brought a lot of smiles to our family for Christmas! Hope the better news will come in the next a few weeks! Actually at the beginning of the PSL4 I was planning to pick a micro cap gold, TRGD! I liked it a lot as we discussed in the PMs. But I didn't want to steal your favorite and chose GLE in stead, the big loser! I've got to drink a lot more margaritas here in Cancun to smooth the pain!
As the winner of individual tournament, did I win a lunch with our WB, BW?
SSKILLZ1 and Lentinman:
First class job. I really, really appreciate your hard work.
This is my favorite board!
Dale
Bobwins: Congratulations. Something tells me that you have been a big winner in your real-world investments in 2006, too!
Great job, and thank you for sharing all of your metal plays.
