Reducing a Guilty Suspect's Resistance to Confessing
Applying Criminological Theory to Interrogation Theme Development
By BRIAN PARSI BOETIG, M.S.
Investigators can increase their success in the interrogation room by applying criminological theories of deviance, which attempt to explain the roots of criminal behavior. The theories attribute deviant behavior to a multitude of spiritual, biological, and social factors. Investigators conducting interrogations can apply these principles in an effort to reduce a suspect's resistance to being truthful by exploiting centuries of social science research. Possessing a basic understanding of the theories and how to practically apply them during an interrogation can improve investigators' abilities to facilitate a guilty suspect's transition from denial to admission.

Security executives travel to Israel - a trip report .
By Henry Morgenstern
What did they learn about Israel's approach to Homeland Security?
The first training day after arrival
After recovering from the 12 hour direct flight to Tel Aviv, the men woke up to and started out with a visit to learn about how Israel defends its critical infrastructure. The Ashquelon Rottenberg power plant supplies 1/5th of Israel's electricity. But it is also about two kilometers from the Gaza strip - very hostile Palestinian territory. Subject to missile attacks with improvised "Kassam" missiles, the men were treated to a lecture on how the plant defends itself.

The Marlin 94 .30-.30 Lever Action Rifle
Like most boys my age (of course I'm not a boy anymore) I grew up enchanted with cowboys and Indians, cops and robbers, the old west and mountain men. Television heroes like The Lone Ranger, and movie heroes like John Wayne brightened my days. And it seemed to me like every one of those cowboys had a lever-action rifle of some kind. So, throughout most of my childhood I pictured myself on horseback, single-handedly slinging the rifle down and back up by the lever to feed in the next cartridge - because I had to hold the horse's reins with the other. As I got older reality set in, but my fascination with the lever-action didn't dwindle. Just after I turned 18 I went out and bought my first Marlin 94.
Now in all those movies I had never once seen a cowboy or mountain man rub his shoulder after shooting the rifle. In fact, it almost looked like he could do it one handed. So you can imagine my (uneducated) surprise when I fired that first .30-.30 round. I was all of five feet ten inches tall and weighed (soaking wet) maybe 140 pounds. The butt plate on the rifle was a thin strip of plastic. No padding. Ouch. Those days are a few years past and I've a little more organic padding of my own (can you say, "fat" and some muscle?). I've learned more about firearms and improved my shooting techniques so I'm not getting hit quite so hard. And I still have a Marlin 94 .30-.30 lever-action rifle in my gun safe. Since it's the only weapon I have that I consider usable for hunting anything other than squirrel and rabbit, I thought I'd take a look at it for this week's review.

Port Security By Andrew Blong
14 March, 2004, two blasts occurred in the Israeli port of Ashdod.
One explosion went off inside the closely guarded port compound
and one detonated outside the concertina wired fence.
The double suicide terror attack overwhelmed the security team at the port.
... evidences an unanticipated increase in the brazenness of terrorist attacks.
Despite the rigorous security protocol and highly trained security team,
the suicide bombers were successful at wreaking havoc at the port.
Ashdod is the best protected port in the world.
If Ashdod can be hit, all other ports must be vulnerable to such attacks.
The implications for port security and international maritime commerce are numerous and pressing.

China sets up squads to combat terrorism
The Terrorism Research Center (TRC) http://www.terrorism.com
China has set up a new police force in large cities, equipped with helicopters
and armoured vehicles, to combat the threat of terrorism and the rising incidence
of rioting and social unrest across the country.
The squads, to be stationed in 36 large cities, reflect the need for a more professional
police force amid concerns that it is currently ill-equipped to manage such issues,
scholars and analysts said on Thursday.

How to Win in Iraq - Andrew F. Krepinevich, Jr.
Because they lack a coherent strategy, U.S. forces in Iraq have failed to defeat the insurgency
or improve security.
Winning will require a new approach to counterinsurgency, one that focuses on providing security
to Iraqis rather than hunting down insurgents.
And it will take at least a decade.

Nightline - eminent domain
Aug. 26, 2005
Tonight on "Nightline" we'll introduce you to one man who was really bothered by this year's Supreme Court decision on eminent domain. He's hardly the only one. The decision -- which allows local governments to seize private property to make way for commercial development deemed in the best interest of the community -- caught many by surprise. In fact, a poll by the University of New Hampshire found that 93 percent of residents of that state oppose the decision.
But Logan Darrow Clements is not taking the decision lying down. To prove his point that the decision is wrong-headed, he is trying to gather signatures in the town of Weare, N.H., so that the town can seize the private property of one resident in order to build a hotel.
Which resident?
Supreme Court Justice David Souter, naturally.

Thanks for that update, and I would find it valuable if anyone here

Then investigate an answer of: "We live under the laws we deserve."

For me the following place on IH, of which I don't and will not post on,
could serve us well if a few IH members knowned to value thoughts
not via a Cut & Paste of articles written by others, but thru a process
whereby they create new thoughts using pieces obtained from these articles,
and pieces absorbed during their lifetime to help live and understand.
A Cut'n & Paste'n of articles from the philosophy and psychology sciences,
to be read by others, is as meaningful as a jigsaw puzzle created from a
colorful picture cut not into interlocking physical pieces, but equal sized squares,
and given to color-challenged BobZ to assemble.
I now submit a challege directed towards this board mentioned,
plus introduce a few IH members to help carry it out.
On SI is an Acronym for CFZ - Clown Free Zone
My perception of this thread is a group of smart-ass folks that feel superior
to anyone they have banned from posting there, which is near 99.999% of SI.
I challenge FredG (Koikaze) to change his board into a: AFZ - Article Free Zone
Doing so requires a person to post only their understanding of articles.

... one reveals one's true self in every thought that materializes as an action...
[stop]
ok,
I use simple math like steps that Zeev can correct me if wrong.
The statement of "one's thought" is always a false axiom.
False here in the sense: not always 100% true
Once again the Bell Curve, with for example Aristotle at the far right
such that what his thoughts "materializes as an action" is less than fully accurate
to accomplish to another person in observation his "one's true self [is] revealed."
To explain, predict and render solutions to world events engaged in conflicts,
like those in Iraq, Israel, etc using actions to describe the thoughts
that caused such actions, is beyond folly, its incorrect to a degree of insane.
Logic should tell Zeev that to determine truth and falsehood in another
requires the ability to reveal one's true self through an examination
of the administration of one's thoughts into external action.

LOL! Truth is elusive, and in any event, one filters "reality" through
one's own set of predetermined filters anyway, which distorts that "reality".
I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that not only is there no truth,
there is no reality per se, simply each bundle of complex interpretations.
If one experiences the event oneself, one cannot see the big picture.
If one is presented with the big picture, well, one has no first-hand knowledge.
Experiencing one's own "reality" is a trip we each take alone, and each person
IS the story of that trip.

and millions of years of evolution have altered the real world into

Filters (read attitudes) are presumably not inherited, but acquired, and as such are mutable.
Survival instincts (inherited and immutable) may run amuck, but the resulting action
usually conforms to the dictates of society due to the process of socialization.

Note: I needed to cut & paste & insert & move around many pieces.
Its not a reflection upon you, but a needed technique I must use
whenever too many complex concepts are contained in a very few words.
What follows is really myself reading your post and creating a reply
not to you, but to myself to be read and thought about.
But what happens when your "resulting action" obtained from your
"conform[ing to] the dictates of society due to the process of socialization"
causes you to reject "Survival instincts (inherited and immutable)"
but only to discover that your
"Filters (read attitudes) are presumably not inherited, but acquired, and as such are mutable"
causing you great pain, and upon examination discover that the reason
for your rejection of certain survival instincts is based not on their validity
being discovered as anti-being, but that a lack of others to obtain an understanding
of the role designed in them causes person to person interactions to "run amuck."

third possible outcome - outta body experience
not to be confused with voices (i.e. i have 3)
imagine a person represented as a picture
the picture in pieces like a jigsaw puzzle (assembly required)
pic 1 - is how others see you
pic 2 - is how you see yourself
pic 3 - is who you really is
now,
while all the pieces of pic 1 & 2 are contained in their seperate piles
available for construction to make a picture, the the pieces for pic 3
are contained in a seperate pile, pile for pic 3 is uncomplete when viewed by you,
as certain pieces have been moved to piles of pic 1 & 2
so,
to see a picture of your true self requires you to select, mix & match
onto whatever you make from pile of pic 3, a selection from piles for pic 1 & 2
for some folks very few pieces reside in the pile for pic 3
and this extends to double trouble
when they have very few pieces in pile for pic 2,
and load up near all into pile for pic 1

delusional (versus) to learn anything
http://ragingbull.lycos.com/mboard/boards.cgi?board=GPGI&read=6176
If Hans appears delusional in his responce to you,
then its simply that what you seek is delusional information.
All non-reporting companies that have unfullfilled promises,
as bespoken in news releases exist as equals,
be them scams or folks with impossible to obtain visions.
Yet you seek from the unknowned a true path into GPGI's future.
Why?
Simple,
GPGI could be that one in a million long shot where pennies turn into
hundreds of dollars, and we explode with internal anger:
"Where the #$@%& was I when this opportunity existed."
"Why the #$@%& was I not paying attention."
"I was aware of it, but I #$@%&ing didn't read the tea leaves correctly."
But then, you know this.
a.k.a. "You'r nobodies fool."
You did acknowledge reality in your initial post to Hans,
and Hans replied to such,
but your frustration exploded in not obtaining a message,
a message from a seer into GPGI's future.
We all experience this.
We all have "equations" needing to be balanced,
but they never can be,
no matter if we scored on the next speculation,
those prior speculations we lose on,
be them scams, failures or we just don't know why,
we all find it difficult to acknowledge to ourselves:
"I was not as smart as I thought I was when I entered into it."
Its easy for me (SI's DougAK) and Hans to take a relaxed stand
and wait yet again for the future of the last news release,
as we really have no choice if our average is x10 current share price,
or for me, the investment is small and entered as money not needed.
I'll accept getting back zero versus a moon shot trip to da moon.
Actually "truth be knowned" I want to balance my $55k IPMCF lost,
which I know is a folly thing to attempt, but its human nature.
So best you decide:
- got not needed cash
If yes, put it on:
- GPGI
or, HABE or, MXAM
or, hundreds or thousands of other penny stocks,
all probably non-reporting companies.
But a big "yes" ... which one or two...
... is totally up to you.
DO NOT open the door for a crying baby.
Be careful in this crazy world we live in.
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your
body. If you are close enough to use it, do!
2. Learned this from a tourist guide in New Orleans. If a robber asks
for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from
you....chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse
than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER
DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back
tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The
driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping,
eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a
list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is
the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun
to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR,
LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or
parking garage:
A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger
side floor, and in the back seat.
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the
passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them
into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and
the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car,
you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman
to walk you back out.
IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than
dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are
horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially
true at NIGHT!)
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS
RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And
even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a
zig-zag pattern!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP. It may get
you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well
educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He
walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked "for help" into his vehicle
or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
9. ... heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last,
and she called the police because it was late and she thought
it was weird. The police told her
"Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door."
The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a
window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run
over The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you
do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a
baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that
someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had
several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their
doors when they're home alone at night.

Angela's Ashes: Frank McCourt Returns to Ireland
March 16, 2005
The long suffering of the people of Ireland -- from potato famine, to decades of profound poverty and massive emigration -- was captured lyrically and unforgettably for so many in the best-selling novel "Angela's Ashes," by Frank McCourt. His description of the poverty endured in the Ireland of his childhood -- his rarely employed alcoholic father and his often deeply depressed mother -- included searing images, such as a meal in which the family shared a single egg.
So, when Ireland was recently listed as the best place to live in the world, according to a quality of life assessment by the Economist magazine, "Nightline" producer Rebecca Lipkin wondered what McCourt might have to say about the changes to his homeland -- now the economic toast of Europe.
Tonight, "Nightline" and Frank McCourt visit the new Ireland, from Dublin to McCourt's hometown of Limerick, in honor of St. Patrick's Day on Thursday. Ireland is no longer exporting its people for economic subsistence. In fact, as McCourt discovered, Ireland is now teaming with students planning for years in university, and immigrants from countries, such as Poland, still seeking the economic turnaround that Ireland has experienced. Ireland is definitely not Angela's Ashes anymore.
We hope you'll join us. And until then: we wish you the luck of the Irish.

ATTORNEY'S ADVICE -- NO CHARGE
1. The next time you order checks have only your initials (instead of first name) and last name put on them. If someone takes your checkbook, they will not know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name, but your bank will know how you sign your checks.
2. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put "PHOTO ID REQUIRED".
3. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts,
DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.
4. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone.
If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have it printed, anyone can get it.
5. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both
sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a name, address, Social Security number, credit cards.
Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have firsthand knowledge because my wallet was stolen last month. Within a week, the thieve(s) ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information online,
and more. But here's some critical information to limit the damage in
case this happens to you or someone you know:
1. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.
2. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit
cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).
But here's what is perhaps most important of all : (I never even thought
to do this.)
3. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to
place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.
By the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the theft,
all the damage had been done. There are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I knew
about before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away This weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks.
Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your wallet,
etc., has been stolen:
1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
2.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
3.) Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
4.) Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271
