Matt,
... as an ADDED layer of protection
... a new verified user [gets]
- 3 posts per day on day one,
- 4 posts on day two,
- 5 posts on day three, etc.,
... until achieving [the] 18 posts per day on day twenty?
This will allow for a new member to more slowly integrate
into IHUB as a "FULLTIME Member"! [end.]
O,
I'll like to add to your insight of:
"... to more slowly integrate into IHUB"
Where your use of the word "slowly" can be expanded
to also include the time duration between allowed posts
being made on a day's quote.
This way the "# posts per day on day #"
until "... into IHUB as a "FULLTIME Member"!
be restricted as requiring a one hour interval between each,
thus allowing enough time for the spam post to be found,
reported to IH Admin(pcDave2001), and user terminated.
"... 18 posts per day on day twenty"
Will requires 35 hours in that day,
meaning wannaberich will play a version
of that Beatles song "8 days a week" :o)
I'am fuzzy on Churak's input to this area of concern.
Churak's posts as if he has a grub bug up his @s...
so, let Matt program Churak's profile to automatically
PeopleMark every new member so that each post
can be reviewed by Churak in real time & space.
"my hair is still white ... from the powder"
... wearing a Court of Louis XIV powdered wig
... Life in a wig [more] impressive than life [in] own hair.
Horsehair wigs cost from about $700 to $1,500.
Judges get a stipend to cover the cost.
Barristers must buy their own.
Used wigs are in high demand,
as they acquire more cachet with age
[but] also acquire an odor and are itchy.
Imagine: the KKD powdered sugar on Matt's wig :o)
(or) #msg-1280107
Matt,
I have to agree with you on this, and as an ADDED layer of protection, can't it be programmed that a new verified user first gets 3 posts per day on day one, 4 posts on day two, 5 posts on day three, etc., up until achieving the ultimate 18 posts per day on day twenty?
This will allow for a new member to more slowly integrate into IHUB as a "FULLTIME Member"!
Grub?
What grub?
You messin' around in my head?
While you're up there, get some tweezers and see if you can pluck the darned thing out.
The doctor sprinkled some kind of powder in my hair that was supposed to chase them dudes. It didn't work if you see one, but my hair is still white ... from the powder, I guess.
Fred
nice grub...I don't know if SPAMMERS think. But I do see where you are coming from. CytoSusies? That'll leave a mark...lol.
If I wanted to spam and were only granted ONE post pending approval, on a site that is known to monitor posts for spamming, I'd be very careful with that one post. You can say it will be the same with three posts, and I couldn't disagree, except as to likelihood ... which I think would diminish somewhat.
Besides, if were to agree with you, someone might think I had Canadian blood ... even though the CytoSusies know there ain't no ice in my veins.
Fred
Are you suggesting that you will only up the posts to 18 from 3 AFTER you approve their first post? If so, why even bother with the 3 posts until the account is verified? Limit the newbie to 1 post until you approve that post & then up it to 18. That way you will cut back on 2 SPAMS & possibly deter SPAMMERS from going thru the registration process for only one post until their account is approved for 18. Also, perhaps you can automatically boot any newbie whose first post contains a link ie with HTTP or H T T P or WWW or W W W in it.
>>that sounds pretty good but in #3, why don't you simply give freebies 18 posts/day at that point once you have verified the email account and the newbie has clicked that random number/phrase/link to activate the account?
I want it to work like this:
1. Register (deny any new registration for same e-mail already in db)
2. Account is quasi-suspended (no posts)
3. E-mail is sent out, click link to verify, account is set to 3 posts/day
4. Once you make your first post (like it is now), you get upped to 18 posts/day, after I approve it
It's just an added layer of protection against the idiots and spammers.
Doing it the way you suggest is the way RB and every other site does it. The effort I put into verifying/approving accounts is well worth it, as the spam and idiots often get the crap smacked out of them before anybody else sees them -- which is the way it SHOULD work.
The one thing that would cut down on spammers and also stop aliases is the e-mail verification layer, which we've never had.

I think I have figured out the weird cookie requests that I get sometimes. They appear to originate from images in a post.
For example, #msg-1935618 generated a cookie request for:
SITESERVER
lifesflavor.com
ID=2bf291cc9d9eaf2be3e940cc000488da
It appears that the image in that post is from the site trying to place the cookie. Is the cross-site cookie request normal? Any idea if there is a setting (other than the routine cookie settings) to prevent it?
Wish I had knew enough to have some ideas for you on the mystery slow downs......no such luck though.
I was joking......I did not see it before I posted although you will never believe that
I should have known.
I wanted the grub!
Shhhhhhh! You're supposed to send me that in a PM! Bob will see your post and then he'll hate me........again.
Nice touch Derfie!
Give a compliment while asking for something!!
I have to remember that!
Bob.....I'm sure you never saw my first request, or else I know you would have gotten right on it, but, would it be possible to add in the mailbox a column showing what board the public post came from. This way we can decide if we want to go straight to the post or to the board.
BTW, have I mentioned how much I love the new archive files for PM's?? Simply fantastic!
SI was speedy up til 7:15 AM PST. Then it got slower. It speeded up again for a few minutes, then went through a period of 9 sec pages. Now it has 20 sec pages again at 8:00 AM PST.
Did you forget to put on your Harmonic Convergence beanie this morning?
ps IHUB remains speedy, not an isp issue
edit: back to speedy at 8:13 PST
edit: that didn't last long back to 10 secs at 8:14
edit: have you tried putting new batteries in your beanie propellor?
>> I only recently started running it,<<
That sounds like a likely suspect. Hope it works.
I'll try to remember Monday morning to disable my database synchronizer for the day and see what happens. I only recently started running it, and it's not really moving much data (mostly just keeping message-related tables synchronized between production and development environments), but it's possible that having another machine other than the webservers making demands on the database might be it.
I don't think it is. But worth a try.
I'm beginning to wonder about the scheduled task thing again. Around 12:30 PST SI started to operate at nominal speeds. Now pretty speedy.
I got a theory that your code has a loop that manages scheduled tasks. If this loop gets out of sync with actual time for some reason it might reschedule tasks in a different way and run something during the market hours that really burdens the CPU. If this is what is happening, the current task that is causing the slowness is a medium grade burden, not the killer that hit you a few months ago.
If you can look through the scheduled task stuff in the code you might be able to find something. Wish I knew what to look for, but it is something that designates time of day to launch and this launcher is cutting loose from correct time somehow.
Just a WAG from far away, but SOMETHING is going on, that is certain.
SI suddenly repsonding with 2-3 sec page loads. ???
Glad I was able to help!
Susie...I've been using your suggestion for about a week now and find it helps quite a bit. Cuts my 'actives' by about half.
Thanks!
SI taking fifteen seconds this AM consistently. IHUB fast.

This sounds like a challenging FTF -- even though probably not what you had in mind. <g>
Now back up to speed. I'd say it's a software thing. It's as if there's a buffer that begins to run just over capacity and then doesn't dump when the load backs off. Just a WAG of course.
I'd say the old SI Unix code may be coming apart here and there. Let's hope it lasts till you get the new code done.
Slowness on SI contiuing with variations between 7-8 seconds to about 20 seconds. Looks like the slowest times were at the start at around 30 secs.
SI very slow again, 30 sec page loads. 12:35 PST
Thanks. I'm not sure how well I'll be able to address it, but I can at least try to see what's going on while the slowness is happening.
This morning it is intermittent. Yesterday it was persistently slow for a few hours. I haven't noticed a "start time" but I have noticed that during SI slowness, IHUB is still fast so it's not the isp. I'll keep you posted.
I'm on it now and at first it seemed to be running pretty slow but seems a lot faster now. Is this also what you're seeing?
You mentioned it reminding you of the problem we had before when a backup was happening during the day. Are you seeing the problem start at a specific time then go away after something like half an hour or so?
I'll try to remember to check it out tomorrow at about 10:30 central unless you tell me it's starting at a different time.
Nice grub & way to nail milky's milky buttski.
On my way over there right now.
It's now set up so that if you created the board but didn't make yourself the moderator, you can at least get to the board management screen to do things moderators do and to add yourself as an assistant.
Matt, it's also set up so that you and I both have the "Manage" link on all boards, whether we're moderators of them or not.
Oh, and Milky? Now I know exactly why two of the boards (now one) that you've created are inaccessible. It'll be a while before I come up with a way to prevent that from happening. I'm sure you know why they're not accessible, right? <g>
SI is taking over twenty seconds to load a page. Was pretty fast earlier. This reminds me of that scheduled task problem a few months back.
Do computers speak milkese.
Doug,
How come no one can get to your boards?
SI taking thirty seconds to deliver a page this AM.

Upon seeing your inaction, I just asked Bob to help me.
Plus your inaction on the top two boards are echo'ed the same.
Any clue why I would get a cookie request with the following info?

Its time for all of you to enter the bathroom,
close the door,
pull down your pants & shorts, and look for your balls.
Yes Virginia,
See them they will not.
But hair there, everywhere.
Some fell off, stick'n onto the underwear.
No Virginia,
They are still there,
them highschool wanna_be_balls
wanna_be_with_the _girls
But Virginia,
It was true, more times than not,
them balls were mostly blue,
balls of blue.
So Virginia,
What to do?
What did they do?
These highschool boys with two balls of blue?
Ya'up... American Muscle Cars
But that was then,
when them hairless Blue Balls
knew not what to really do.
Time for aNew
Replace American Hairless Balls of Blue Muscle Cars
with... http://www.bmwusa.com/about/sitemap.html
and
Focus on... M, X3, Z4
to
pump real blood into your balls
D:o)g
LOL...Thanks. I was just looking at that on the Gearhead board.
Still not that fond of the front, but already getting used to it. :)
By the time the '06's come out....which is when I hope to 'upgrade'....I'll prolly be drooling again.
