Recent Events here at IH have given me pause...
Without rehashing the details ad infinitum, a longtime user was recently jailed and the summarily terminated. While it is true that any one of his past transgressions would have been grounds for termination, the reasons for this most recent incarceration were and still are unclear. Although one well respected user here at IH "fessed up" to submitting a TOS violation on the jailed user, no confirmation was provided by either IH admin or the jailhouse moderator (aka the warden). Further, despite numerous efforts by several parties to ascertain the nature of the crime (as well as the extent of the punishment and what would be required for release), again neither the Site admin nor the board moderator saw fit to provide a clear, direct answer to any of the parties involved. Further another inmate was released during this time for no apparent reason, even after he had posted numerous TOS violations and direct personal insults to the management at IH.
These events culminated in the jailed user being terminated for "actions committed off site". No further information has been provided beyond "it was directed at a particular member and affected all IH members". No corroborating evidence has been presented.
During these events it was repeated several times by management and it's representatives that "Old Flame Warriors" are unwelcome here at IH.
Funny, but until a couple of days ago I've ALWAYS felt welcome here. Even during 8 hours of a "premature termination" I did not lose confidence that *I* was welcome here at IH. It is true that there have been times when I felt that management was unresponsive and dismissing commentary "out of hand", but those issues were resolved. Or so I thought.
Over the past few days I watched and then attempted to intervene when I felt that management was being unresponsive and disrespectful to another user, namely the fellow that had been jailed. My commentary was dismissed "out of hand" by the board moderator and IH management chose to proffer a poorly disguised personal slight. Coupled with the repeated reference concerning Flame Warriors and the lack of responses when questioned on these issues, I must conclude on the evidence available that IH management wishes to make me feel unwelcome here.
As such, though I wish it were different, I will be maintaining a lower profile for the foreseeable future. venturing out only when I've compiled enough evidence to call IH management out directly on whatever issues that evidence may present.
Something is fishy at IH. I don't now what yet, but I'll find out.

Great post BOP, but very sad!
Muell
Earlier today I got a PM that the sender wanted to know what I thought of the restrictions placed on users here at IH. My response was a long winded way of telling them that "you reap what you sow" then while reading my email today I saw this...
Sad But True, please read this and think about what Anne Graham is saying. If you don't have the time to read it now, print and read it later. Something for us to think about.
In light of the many perversions and jokes we send along to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This joke today is not intended to be a joke, it's not intended to be funny, it's intended to get you thinking.
Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her "How could God let something like this happen?" (regarding the attacks on Sept. 11 ). Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?" In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, missing children in massive numbers etc."
I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools. Also think about the recent Liberal California 9th Circuit Court decision on the Pledge of Allegiance. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school ... the Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. It must be bad for kids to read. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. The school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave because we don't want any bad publicity, and we surely don't want to be sued (there's a big difference between disciplining or touching, beating, smacking, humiliating, kicking, etc..) We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then someone said, let's let our daughters have abortions if they want, and they won't even have to tell their parents. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then some wise school board member said, since boys will be boys and they're going to do it anyway, let's give our sons all the condoms they want so they can have all the fun they desire, and we won't have to tell their parents they got them at school. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Then some of our top elected officials said it doesn't matter what we do in private as long as we do our jobs. Agreeing with them, we said it doesn't matter to me what anyone, including the President, does in private as long as I have a job and the economy is good. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
And then someone took that appreciation of the nude body a step further and published pictures of nude children and then further again by making them available on the Internet. We let it go thereby saying it's OK, they're entitled to free speech.
Then the entertainment industry said, let's make TV shows and movies that promote profanity, violence, and illicit sex. Let's record music that encourages rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes. And we said it's just entertainment, it has no adverse effect, nobody takes it seriously anyway, so go right ahead. Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother children to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
We have our borders wide open for anyone to come here, take what they need and leave. What happened to the days when foreigners actually filled out papers, waited for approval to come here and then did. We do not grow cocaine or heroin in this country and yet it is being grown and imported into this country by three of the four nations that owe us enough money to wipe out the national debt. We give welfare, food stamps, medical aid and an education to those that don't even belong here and let Americans starve and pay higher taxes than anywhere else in the world. But hey; We let it go thereby saying it's OK.
Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with "WE REAP WHAT WE SOW."
Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.
Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace.
Are you laughing?

Keeping your Cool when it's Hot and Humid
Ok, maybe cool isn't the right word, but you certainly don't
have to be completely miserable during the hot, humid dog days
of summer. After all Air Conditioning for residential use didn't
exist before WWII and folks were moving to Florida (where hot
and humid are the natural order) in droves long before then. So
how did they (and many current residents) tolerate the
conditions without AC? If you get a chance to look at how and
where homes were built in "Old Florida", you'll notice a number
of common characteristics that lead to more comfortable
accommodations.
First, let's talk about "where" these homes were built.
Many structures can be found near (or even on) the water, often
with little or no obstruction to the breezes coming off of the
water. More often than not the structure will be situated so the
water is to the north of the house. This allows the trees to be
placed to the south and west of the building to block/filter the
blazing summer sun. I've been in homes that were sited like this
and in homes sited exactly opposite of this but with nearly
identical construction. The temperature difference is amazing.
Once the site has been selected and the orientation of the
structure decided, how do we best take advantage of our hard
work so far. Again the old timers may not have had our computer
models and information to draw on but they certainly got it
right. The most comfortable houses all share a number of common
construction elements; a tin (or metal) roof with a moderate to
high pitch, porches on at least the south, west and east walls
(if not all 4 walls), breezeways (hallways that allowed breezes
to travel the entire length and/or width of the structure), and
foundations raised above ground. Also, it was not uncommon for
there to be little or no attic space, all rooms were open to the
underside of the roof. Usually a cupola would be placed at the
roof peak.
So what does this do? It takes full advantage of convection. We
all know that hot air rises. What this structure does is,
provide a funnel that takes in air at the coolest possible
temperature, provides a means of quickly heating that air and
then allows the heated air to escape at the highest point in the
building. In simplest terms these houses create their own
breeze! It is not unusual to have a consistent wind "blowing"
throughout one of these houses. By siting the house to draw in
the coolest available air (from over the water and/or through
the trees), it was often possible to obtain temperatures 3 or 4
degrees lower than the base outside temperature. Couple this
with the 3 to 4 degree "feels like" drop in temperature you get
from moving air (you did read that booklet that came with your
ceiling fan didn't you?) and while it might really be 90 degrees
outside, you might feel like it was only 82!
Now, I realize that for you folks (like me) born after WWII
having become accustomed to AC and the comfortable temperatures
it affords, even the situation described above would be
intolerable. But consider this…
Having built a home without any consideration of the site
benefits or hazards as regards heating and cooling. Having no
porches to shield your 20' high walls from the blazing sun.
Creating an attic space that is better at retaining heat than
the lid of a pressure cooker… Do you really enjoy spending $300
a month to keep you comfortable at 72 degrees?
Just employing some of the techniques used by the old timers
could make it easier for your AC unit to get that temperature
down. And lower your electric bill!
It is possible to build an attractive home and get the best
possible heating and cooling efficiency built into the design.
It is even possible to retrofit existing homes to be more
efficient…and with out spending a boatload of money! I will be
happy to discuss any of these ideas for improving your home
heating/cooling efficiency at any time.

I probably should have included in my last post that I don't use Sprint anymore either, we've gone wireless and get free long distance nation wide!

This was done to me by AT&T, hence they are my target cruelties, rudness, and deliberate obnoxious behavior!
I hear you... I'm not a big fan of AT&T either. I got suckered into switching to them when they offered those $100 checks to switch... for two lines that was $200... but eventually I realized that made that up quickly with their high prices. I no longer use them for my long distance and my bill has been much lower.
Sara
Sprint PCS... NOT free and NOT clear!
LOL, I wish I could join you guys on your Sprint bashing, but for me Sprint does offer a superior service when compared to AT&T here in the midwest. I've also had much better experiences with Sprints representatives here and their signals are cleaner comparatively. AT&T on the other hand is a company that I just totally love to screw any way I can imagine. What is it called when a phone company transfers you to their system without your approval? This was done to me by AT&T, hence they are my target cruelties, rudness, and deliberate obnoxious behavior!

As I understand it Bob's #1 priority when he returns from vacation is the programming and setup of "message filtering". From what he and I have discussed privately (and publicly) it should be a very robust feature, providing a great deal more functionality and flexibility than just a regular old fashioned "ignore" (or as we called them in the old days "twit filters").
Looking forward to your full time return.

If you interested in the IRS code...
It's on the web at http://www.fourmilab.ch/ustax/www/contents.html
HGTTG Grub
The Bird of Prey
#board-381
Looked for it at IRS.gov have you?
Couldn't find it, eh? Didn't you know the IRS doesn't publish the CODE on the web? That would make it too easy to find credits and loopholes and stuff they don't want you to know.
Even if you search on it's entire heading...
TITLE 26, Subtitle A, CHAPTER 1, Subchapter A, PART IV, Subpart B, Sec. 29
it's not on the IRS site.
Fortunately, you don't have to know everything about the code. the company that is operating the trust has that responsibility. Each quarter they issue the declared royalty and tax credit for the quarter. Each year they supply all shareholders with the documentation necessary to claim the credit. All you have to do if fill out the appropriate line in the 1040(last year line 50) and include a copy of form 8830 (line k) with the information from the company and your good to go.
However, we are fortunate that someone in America dares to publish the IRS code on the net thus making it available for all to see.
http://www.fourmilab.ch/ustax/www/t26-A-1-A-IV-B-29.html
You will note that this section has a provision that essentially ends the credit at the end of 2007. There are bills before Congress that would extend this credit to 2011 and beyond. The Bush administration supports them and so do I.
This Credit encourages the production of alternate sources of energy as well as maximizing the production of natural gas from resources that would not otherwise be used.
That the average investor can benefit from this is just an added bonus.
Add you thought I was just out to make a buck!
If you have/want an electric car check out section 30!
The Bird of Prey
#board-381
Extremely interesting concept, would have the link to the IRS that covers Section 29? TIA
Muell
Section 29? What the Heck is Section 29?
No, it's not the rowdiest section in your favorite stadium. It's
an obscure part of the Income Tax Code. Before you go screaming
off into the night relax, this is very simple and very easy to
understand. Section 29 creates a tax credit for entities using
alternative fuels or alternative methods of gathering energy.
Keep in mind this is a Credit not a deduction. It will reduce
the tax bill dollar for dollar.
How does this benefit me, you ask? Well, it just so happens that
there are a few publicly trading companies that have set up
special entities (called Royalty Trusts) to take full advantage
of Section 29. These trusts are also publicly traded, which
means the average investor (that's you) can get a tax break just
like the big boys. I know your thinking that the tax benefit
must be too small to be worth the effort…but…you'd be wrong. You
see not only do you get the tax benefit… but also, the trust
must typically pay out a higher royalty payment than
the "normal" stock pays out in dividends. To sum it all up, you
get more cash and a tax credit to boot.
Let me show you a real world example. (Figures are from the
trailing twelve months, future performance may vary)
Dominion Resources (D) is an energy company many of you should
be familiar with. Strong, long term stable track record with a
substantial quarterly dividend. Some of you may even have it in
your portfolio. If so, what follows will certainly give you
pause.
I'd be surprised if many of you have ever heard of the Black
Warrior Trust (DOM). Some Dominion shareholders may even be
surprised to learn it is run by Dominion Resources. But take a
look at this issue (especially if you hold the parent company
stock.
From the latest close:
Dominion Resources
Share price $60.97
Dividend $2.58
Yield ~4.25%
Black Warrior Trust
Share Price $18.48
Dividend $2.30
Yield ~12.50%
Tax Credit ~$0.80
Almost triple the payout, plus a substantial tax credit!
So if you have 100 shares of "D" you'll get a dividend of $258.
Not bad for a $6100 investment.
But, with that same $6100 you can own 300 shares of "DOM" (same
company, just a different structure), get a royalty of $690, a
Tax Credit of $240 and still have $550 cash to invest elsewhere.
These are typical numbers for several of the companies that take
advantage of Section 29. You can participate. It doesn't require
anything special, even the folks at H&R Block know how to enter
it in to your 1040!
You can find these companies by searching for "Royalty Trust" in
most any Search Engine. The returns vary slightly and from time
to time one or another with have its price depressed and you can
get some really astounding returns. If you are investing for
income or looking to add a little punch and diversify your
portfolio, Royalty Trusts Might been worth your while to look
at. Recently my parents had Torch Energy Royalty Trust in their
holdings. During the time they held it they collected more in
Royalties and Tax Credits than they originally paid for the
stock and sold out for almost double the purchase amount. Not
too shabby for a two and a half year hold.
If you have questions I'll be here all week.

Hi Tim,
I'll give it my best shot.
SITE made an offer to "buy back" several of it's note (bond) issues.
Several of the bond holders felt the offers were in violation of the rules set forth in the contracts and several different securities laws. They filed a lawsuit attempting to stop the proposed transaction from going forward.
Yesterday SITE decided to withdraw the offer. They also announced that they are not going to continue making "private offers" to it's "institutional" bondholders as well.
It seems to me that SITE was offering to turn their existing debt into convertible debt. I haven't read anything about this company, but on the surface it appears that the Note holders (at least) felt they were getting the short end of the stick (pun intended). Exchanging their notes (and their leverage) for stock apparently doesn't look like a good idea to them.
I agree with you, this doesn't look good to me either.

SpectraSite Holdings' Tender Offers Expire
Debt Exchange Offers Terminated
CARY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 2002--SpectraSite Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq:SITE - News) today announced that its tender offers to purchase a portion of its outstanding 10.75% Senior Notes due 2010, 12.50% Senior Notes due 2010, 12.00% Senior Discount Notes due 2008, 11.25% Senior Discount Notes due 2009 and 12.875% Senior Discount Notes due 2010 (collectively, the "Notes") expired today at 5:00 p.m., New York City time.
The Company will not purchase any Notes pursuant to the tender offers because the conditions for the consummation of the tender offers were not satisfied. All tendered Notes will be promptly returned to the record holders.
As previously reported, certain holders of the Notes have filed a complaint alleging that the tender offers and the transactions contemplated in connection with the tender offers, including the funding for the tender offers to be provided by Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe ("WCAS"), violate the indentures governing the Notes as well as the Trust Indenture Act and other securities laws and breach fiduciary duties owed by the Company, its Board of Directors and WCAS to holders of the Notes. Although the court rejected the Noteholders' request to temporarily restrain the Company from consummating the tender offers, the Company has determined not to extend the tender offers because, among other things, the issues raised in the lawsuit remain unresolved. The Company will continue to vigorously defend against the action and seek dismissal of all related claims.
SpectraSite also announced that it is terminating its private offers to bondholders that are "Qualified Institutional Buyers" to exchange a portion of their outstanding Notes for up to $75 million of new convertible notes. These notes were to have been issued by SpectraSite Holdings, Inc. and SpectraSite Intermediate Holdings, LLC, its wholly-owned subsidiary. The exchange offers were conditioned upon the completion of the tender offers.

Got any advice or suggested reading for novice in trading Options?
Absolutely!
"McMillan on Options" and "Options as a Strategic Investment" by Lawrence G. McMillan are not only required reading, but a must have for anyone serious about options investing. I also recommend Scott H. Fullman's, "Options: A Personal Seminar" and "The Complete Option Player" by Kenneth R. Trester.
Lastly, if one is asking the question "What the heck is 'Trading Options'?" (extreme novice) I recommend (with caution) that you pick up a copy of "The Wall Street Money Machine" by Wade Cook. While Mr. Cook, IMNSHO, is more about selling books and seminars than investing. He does do a remarkable job of simplifying option investing strategies and explaining them in easily understood terms. Pick up the book and read chapters 7 through 12.
Note: Next Ibox update will include links to acquire these and several other books on my recommended Investment Reading List.
