Oil industry could help the Biden administration tap 'invisible' green energy
BOISE, Idaho — A U.S. Department of Energy report this spring made a bold prediction.
The nascent geothermal industry, it said, has a ready workforce of 300,000 engineers, hydrologists, drillers and power plant operators ready to tap right here in this country.
All that's needed are more early adopters like Tina Riley who are willing to move over from the oil and gas sector. After two decades as a geologist with ExxonMobil in Houston, she recently moved to Idaho to help run Boise's geothermal utility.
"Boise is really well known for geothermal and I wanted to become part of it," Riley says. "I really wanted to be part of the energy transition."
Geothermal energy, which in its simplest form means tapping hot water locked in granite faults sometimes thousands of feet below the surface of the earth to create heat or electricity, is often dubbed an invisible technology. It's long been seen as underutilized. But it's also a hugely expensive renewable resource to extract compared to more conventional drilling.
Amazing times for geomagnetic power to thrust itself on humanity in ways they thought they understood but most certainly underestimated when locality is realized
World told to brace for 'severe geomagnetic storm' today - the first in nearly 20 years - which could bring chaos to mobile phone networks, GPS satellites and power grids
The uncommonly powerful solar storm is expected to hit around midday Friday
It follows a series of solar flares that began on Wednesday, tipping officials off
The prospective storm could cause disruptions to GPS, the internet and power
At least five streams of plasma, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are heading toward Earth, prompting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to issue a severe geomagnetic storm watch for Friday into the weekend.
With the rise of self-driving car technology, it's possible that computer systems on these vehicles could malfunction due to cosmic rays. What if, during an automated trip, imagery from a camera mounted at the front of the car became corrupted and the on-board computer failed to spot a person walking out in front of the vehicle?
However, the research is yet to be published and he says he's not allowed to reveal what the starting level of accuracy was during the experiments.
Such interventions could make self-driving cars of the future safer but they wouldn't eliminate the possibility of a cosmic ray causing other problems. And this raises an interesting conundrum for insurers.
"In a world of fully autonomous vehicles, how can you prove the accident happened because of cosmic rays?" says Rech. "That is very challenging. I mean, it's impossible, by definition." In ambiguous cases, disputes over whether a human or technology manufacturer – or space weather – was at fault might be difficult to resolve
Tesla recalls 6,000 cars over risk of loose bolts
Tesla is recalling 5,974 of its electric vehicles over concerns that their brake caliper bolts might loosen, which could potentially cause a loss of tire pressure and increase the risk of a crash, according to documents made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Cars that are part of the voluntary recall include certain 2019-2021 Model 3 vehicles and 2020-2021 Model Y vehicles.
Tesla said it was made aware of an issue in December of a field incident involving a 2021 Model Y with a missing fastener on the driver-side rear brake caliper. It has since taken measures to prevent the issue during assembly.
When computers go wrong, we tend to assume it's just some software hiccup, a bit of bad programming. But ionising radiation, including rays of protons blasted towards us by the sun, can also be the cause. These incidents, called single-event upsets, are rare and it can be impossible to be sure that cosmic rays were involved in a specific malfunction because they leave no trace behind them.
And yet they have been singled out as the possible culprits behind numerous extraordinary cases of computer failure. Tesla’s Autopilot drove car into tree, killing Colorado man in fiery crash, lawsuit alleges
The widow of Hans Von Ohain, who worked for Tesla, alleges the self-driving car feature was not ready for consumers
Tesla’s advanced Autopilot driving system malfunctioned and caused one of the electric car maker’s Colorado employees to drive off the road and die in a fiery crash, a newly filed wrongful death lawsuit alleges.
The widow of Hans Von Ohain says her husband was driving back from golfing in Evergreen with a friend on May 16, 2022, when the Autopilot system “unexpectedly caused the 2021 Tesla Model 3 to sharply veer to the right, leading it off the pavement” on Upper Bear Creek Road.
The 33-year-old Von Ohain, who was intoxicated, fought to regain control of the vehicle, “but, to his surprise and horror,” the car drove off the road and into a tree, where it burst into flames, according to the 16-page complaint filed May 3 in Clear Creek County District Court.
If Von Ohain was, in fact, using the Full Self-Driving feature, it would make his death the first known fatality involving Tesla’s most advanced driver-assistance technology, the Washington Post reported.

Tesla Set to Autopilot Crashes Along I-80 in Clarion Township
Authorities say the crash happened around 11:35 p.m. on Sunday, May 5
Police say 32-year-old Vu H. Tran, of Cortland, Ohio, was traveling west in a 2023 Tesla Y that was set to autopilot.
According to police, Tran was distracted by his mobile device and lost control of the vehicle which exited the north berm.
The vehicle then traveled into an area with high vegetation as it came to final rest.
The vehicle sustained disabling damage to its front end and undercarriage, police say.
Emergency Lane Departure Avoidance is activated automatically every time the car turns on and intervenes later (and less often) but more forcefully if the driver allows the car to approach a lane-line too closely or quickly without using a turn signal, or if the car's sensors detect an imminent collision. Drivers can also override this system or turn it off, but it resets as soon as the car restarts.

Man dies after Tesla found crashed 300 feet down hillside off Highway 50 near Pollock Pines
POLLOCK PINES -- A man died after he was ejected from his vehicle in a crash off Highway 50 in the area of Pollock Pines on Tuesday.
The El Dorado County Fire Protection District responded to Highway 50 and Outer Limits Road sometime after 11 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a crash.
Firefighters said the report came from the driver's wife receiving a notification that the car, a Tesla, was in a crash.

Who is frustrated?
I am gleefully, enthusiastically, positively, excited about scalping koolaid stands.
It’s all bs. Electric cars were in use before ICE were introduced. (Googling probably wont be sufficient to get to truth).
Storage (lack of-battery technology 20 years behind), consumption, toxic waste, and charging infrastructure that will only be sufficient for 15 min. Dwellers.
No thanks
This Indian will not live that way.
Ever
Here comes The King of kings!
Bless you all!
BEV's will eventually replace ICE. However the current push to make them mandatory is not helping at all, in fact i it leading to statements like this. I understand your frustration about it. We will need oil for a long time, for a multitude of applications. However its use as a major source of transportation fuel will be replaced.

Exclusive: In Tesla Autopilot probe, US prosecutors focus on securities, wire fraud
May 8 (Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors are examining whether Tesla (TSLA.O)
, opens new tab committed securities or wire fraud by misleading investors and consumers about its electric vehicles’ self-driving capabilities, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems assist with steering, braking and lane changes - but are not fully autonomous. While Tesla has warned drivers to stay ready to take over driving, the Justice Department is examining other statements by Tesla and Chief Executive Elon Musk suggesting its cars can drive themselves.
Investigators are exploring whether Tesla committed wire fraud, which involves deception in interstate communications, by misleading consumers about its driver-assistance systems, the sources said. They are also examining whether Tesla committed securities fraud by deceiving investors, two of the sources said.
The Securities and Exchange Commission is also investigating Tesla’s representations about driver-assistance systems to investors, one of the people said. The SEC declined to comment.
it was arguably a referendum on “fake it till you make it” practices, such as intentionally overstating, and thereby misrepresenting, a fledgling company’s current capabilities, success, or profitability, while banking on the notion that its aspirations will eventually follow the desired trajectory and become a reality.
Tesla plunges hundreds of feet down Highway 50 embankment, killing driver in California mountains
A motorist died Tuesday after a Tesla plunged hundreds of feet down an embankment on Highway 50 in Northern California’s high Sierra, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers were alerted to the incident just before 11:30 a.m. in which the vehicle veered off westbound lanes near a Chevron gas station several miles east of Pollock Pines near the Fresh Pond community, according to the CHP’s dispatch log.

Self-Driving Tesla Almost Crashes Head-on Into Police Car
"Stupid f*****g thing."
A Tesla owner had a terrifying run-in on May 3 while driving down a country road with his vehicle's so-called "Full Self-Driving" feature turned on.
Dashcam footage from the user, who goes by FixorFkit and shared the video on X-formerly-Twitter, shows the vehicle crossing the median and veering into the opposite lane to avoid a cyclist — just as a cop car was approaching from the other direction.
Thanks to a quick intervention, he managed to narrowly avoid a collision.
"Stupid fucking thing," the driver can be heard saying after yanking the steering wheel to stay behind the cyclist.
"One of the most horrific drives I had with FSD yet!" FixorFkit wrote. "Important to be alert with FSD. I took over and pulled us back to safety!

Buffet invested in BYD which isnt a scam. BYD didnt need to fake what its technology could do.
But can you fit all of your followers in it?
Nope, sleep well investor.
That’s weird; buying diesel is really expensive. I spend about $20/month to charge my Tesla. And it charges while I sleep at night.

He’s probably shorting it, don’t think it’s going to do anything as long as Elon is still at the helm. He’s lost his touch, plus WallStreet doesn’t like him or Tesla.
Dont post that BS, Warren isnt buying TSLA shares. He knows this is a fake it until it makes it scam. Also if Warren was actually buying, there wouldnt be news coverage stating he might be. it was arguably a referendum on “fake it till you make it” practices, such as intentionally overstating, and thereby misrepresenting, a fledgling company’s current capabilities, success, or profitability, while banking on the notion that its aspirations will eventually follow the desired trajectory and become a reality. Not long before the pandemic reared its ugly head, the brilliant, serial entrepreneur Elon Musk promised to roll out an Uber-like service enabled by self-driving Tesla vehicles. According to Musk, Tesla owners could expect to earn up to $30,000 per year in extra cash by lending their Teslas out to anyone in need of a ride. Owners and customers would transact on the “Tesla network.” Back in 2016, Elon Musk claimed that Tesla cars could “drive autonomously with greater safety than a person. Right now.” It was a lie, one that sent Tesla’s stock price soaring — and made Musk among the wealthiest people on the planet. That lie is now falling apart in the face of a new recall of 2 million Teslas. It’s also revealing to the broader public what close observers of Tesla have always known (and the company itself admits in the fine print of its legal agreements): Tesla’s so-called “self driving” technology works fine — as long as there’s a human behind the wheel, alert at all times. By this time Musk had MCed numerous stock price-spiking hype events around the technology, and had been collecting deposits from customers since late 2016 for a “Full Self-Driving” version of the technology. Despite the reported deaths and clear evidence that the only video of a driverless Tesla was heavily staged, even Musk admits that his hype around self-driving technology has been the central factor in the recent growth of his wealth to titanic proportions. “We think self-driving tech that’s fully separated from humans is very, very far away, and basically impossible,” Li Yunfei, a spokesperson for BYD, said in Mandarin, translated by CNBC.
In a previous post i claimed that "Tesla = fake it until you make it scam". In other posts ive claimed that Tesla is a bigger scam than what Theranos was. People will say it sells cars, its cant be a scam. Very true, the car part and the energy part of the company are not "fake it until you make it scams". What makes Tesla a fake it until you make it scam is the fact that Tesla would not have sold nearly as many of its cars and possibly even megapacks without the lies that have been perpetuated about Tesla to help pump it. Its valuation would be nowhere near what it is or peaked at and thus fewer investors could have purchased so many Teslas. Elon Musk would not be worth the over hundred billions hes worth, without the misleading claims, mostly by Mr Musk, about Teslas FSD software and what could be achieved by it in a rather short period of time. Reality is that true full self driving is decades away if ever achieved; i lean toward never because of natural phenomena that should make it impossible to safely achieve.
Its possible that Tesla produces a few robotaxis and tests them in cities like Cruise and Waymo do, but this would be just part of said fake it until it makes it scam as the underlying software is NOT safe for true full self driving. Thus, I'd expect Tesla to experience the same setbacks those companies have in the cities they operate in, struggle with expanding to other cities, or even continue to operate in the cities they are allowed to be in . In other-words, it will not achieve true self driving robotaxi network. At least its finally going to try and put the public at greater risk at the same time.
What constitutes a fake it until you make it scam?
Is that not exactly what Elon Musk did when he made a series of promises 8 years ago that helped Tesla drive its valuation, sell more vehicles, and net him billions in gains via his enormous share count? This scheme was so successful that sales grew in part because a lot of people invested in TSLA, used their gains to buy 1 or more of Teslas vehicles; some of which then sold them for profit on the secondary market because of all the hype around Tesla coupled with shortage in supply. Without said fake it until you make it scam, Tesla and the greater EV market would likely be on its last breath; at least in the US and Europe.
Elon Musk’s Big Lie About Tesla Is Finally Exposed
This self-driving technology already exists. At this point, the network can go live very soon, opening the world to an exciting new way to make money while you sleep.
Article fails to include that sales of Tesla vehicles would be nowhere near what Tesla has sold to date without these lies.
BYD thoughts of Self driving technology
“When we think about [self-driving tech] from all aspects, from human psychological safety needs, from ethics, from regulation, from technology — including application in this industry — we haven’t figured out [the logic] and we think it is probably a false proposition,” Li told reporters on the sidelines of the Shanghai auto show on Tuesday.
“There may be many industries and businesses that invest a lot of money on this [tech], and after investing for many years it will prove it leads nowhere,” he said.

Tesla Responded to Deadly Car Accident in Zhejiang, China
A couple from Jinhua, Zhejiang, were driving their Tesla Model Y home when their vehicle veered off a mountain road, leading to their deaths despite immediate rescue attempts.
Firstly, they were shocked to learn about the vehicle’s speed at the time of the accident. According to Mr. Tang, the traffic police revealed that the vehicle had reached a maximum speed of 120 km/h. This revelation was startling to the family, as they couldn’t fathom how a vehicle could reach such a speed on a winding mountain road.
Secondly, the absence of any brake marks at the accident scene raised eyebrows. When Mr. Tang and his family visited the site, they were met with this puzzling scenario.
Mr. Tang expressed his confusion, “One would assume that the driving recorder should have captured some useful information during the vehicle’s operation. Even if the impact rendered it useless, there should at least be a record of the moment of impact. But the police are saying that there’s no record at all, which is quite baffling and inevitably prompts some distressing thoughts.”

From a vote-counting machine that added thousands of non-existent votes to a candidate's tally, to a commercial airliner that suddenly dropped hundreds of feet mid-flight, injuring dozens of passengers
Plus, since giant ejections from the sun can sometimes send huge waves of particles towards Earth, what's called space weather, an unnerving prospect looms: we could see much more disruption to computers than we're used to during a massive geomagnetic storm in the future
I'm begging all of you to NEVER get in a Tesla as long as you live. It started accelerating on its own in a parking garage and my dad lost all control of the car and we ran into a wall at 40 mph. Most horrifying experience of my life.
Jain is one of tens of thousands of Tesla owners who have experienced premature failures of suspension or steering parts, according to a Reuters review of thousands of Tesla documents. The chronic failures, many in relatively new vehicles, date back at least seven years and stretch across Tesla’s model lineup and across the globe, from China to the United States to Europe, according to the records and interviews with more than 20 customers and nine former Tesla managers or service technicians.

Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 in Smiljan, Croatia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His father was a priest in the Serbian Orthodox church
and his mother managed the family’s farm. In 1863 Tesla’s brother Daniel was killed in a riding accident.
The shock of the loss unsettled the 7-year-old Tesla, who reported seeing visions—the first signs of his lifelong mental illnesses.

$TSLA, Exclusive: Bill Ford at Mustang Mach-E unveil admits being on Tesla’s turf
Bradley Berman
- Nov. 17th 2019 10:44 pm ET
Minutes after the official unveiling of the Ford Mustang Mach-E,
we jumped into the press scrum surrounding Bill Ford. Electrek asked Ford’s chairman, and Henry Ford’s great-grandson,
if he knew the introduction was taking place one block from Tesla’s design center.
“That’s a coincidence,” he said. And then he flashed a big smile.
Tesla Motors, Inc. (Tesla), incorporated on July 1, 2003, designs, develops, manufactures and sells electric vehicles and advanced electric vehicle powertrain components. Tesla owns its sales and service centers and Supercharger stations. In addition to the Company’s own vehicles, it designs, develops, manufactures, and sells advanced electric vehicle powertrain components to other automotive manufacturers. The Company has provided development services and powertrain components to Daimler AG (Daimler) for its Smart fortwo and A-Class electric vehicles. The Company developed stationary energy storage products for use in homes, commercial sites, and utilities. The Company offers financial products through various financial institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Tesla Motors was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers in Silicon Valley who wanted to prove that electric cars could be better than gasoline-powered cars. With instant torque, incredible power, and zero emissions, Tesla’s products would be cars without compromise. Each new generation would be increasingly affordable, helping the company work towards its mission: to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable transport.
Tesla’s engineers first designed a powertrain for a sports car built around an AC induction motor, patented in 1888 by Nikola Tesla, the inventor who inspired the company’s name. The resulting Tesla Roadster was launched in 2008. Accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and achieving a range of 245 miles per charge of its lithium ion battery, the Roadster set a new standard for electric mobility. Tesla would sell more than 2,400 Roadsters, now on the road in more than 30 countries.
In 2012, Tesla launched Model S, the world’s first premium electric sedan. Built from the ground up to be 100 percent electric, Model S has redefined the very concept of a four-door car. With room for seven passengers and more than 64 cubic feet of storage, Model S provides the comfort and utility of a family sedan while achieving the acceleration of a sports car: 0 to 60 mph in about five seconds. Its flat battery pack is integrated into the chassis and sits below the occupant cabin, lending the car a low center of gravity that enables outstanding road holding and handling while driving 265 miles per charge. Model S was named Motor Trend’s 2013 Car of the Year and achieved a 5-star safety rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In late 2014, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled two dual motor all-wheel drive configurations of Model S that further improve the vehicle’s handling and performance. The 85D features a high efficiency motor at the front and rear, giving the car unparalleled control of traction in all conditions. The P85D pairs a high efficiency front motor with a performance rear motor for supercar acceleration, achieving a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.2 seconds – the fastest four-door production car ever made.
Now with more than 50,000 vehicles on the road worldwide, Tesla is preparing to launch Model X, a crossover vehicle that enters volume production in 2015. Featuring exhilarating acceleration, falcon wing doors, and room for three rows of seating, Model X defies categorization.
Tesla owners enjoy the benefit of charging at home so they never have to visit a gas station or spend a cent on gasoline. For long distance journeys, Tesla’s Supercharger network provides convenient and free access to high speed charging, replenishing half a charge in as little as 20 minutes. Superchargers now connect popular routes in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.
Tesla’s vehicles are produced at its factory in Fremont, California, previously home to New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors. The Tesla Factory has returned thousands of jobs to the area and is capable of producing 1,000 cars a week.
The company is expanding its manufacturing footprint into other areas, including in Tilburg, the Netherlands, where it has an assembly facility, and Lathrop, California, where it has a specialized production plant. To reduce the costs of lithium ion battery packs, Tesla and key strategic partners including Panasonic have begun construction of a gigafactory in Nevada that will facilitate the production of a mass-market affordable vehicle, Model 3. By 2020, the gigafactory will produce more lithium ion cells than all of the world’s combined output in 2013. The gigafactory will also produce battery packs intended for use in stationary storage, helping to improve robustness of the electrical grid, reduce energy costs for businesses and residences, and provide a backup supply of power.
Tesla is not just an automaker, but also a technology and design company with a focus on energy innovation.
The Tesla Roadster is an electric sports car. The Company sells and services its Tesla Roadster though its Company-owned sales and service network in the North America, Europe and Asia. It has delivered approximately 2,500 Tesla Roadsters to customers in over 30 countries. It completed the production of Tesla Roadster gliders at Lotus Cars Limited in January 2012.
Model S is a four door, five-passenger premium sedan. It has designed Model S to include a third row with two rear-facing child seats, subject to applicable safety regulations and requirements, allowing the Company to offer a seven passenger sedan.
The Company revealed an early prototype of the Model X crossover as the first vehicle that it intends to develop by leveraging the Model S platform. This vehicle has been designed to fill the niche between the roominess of a minivan and the style of an SUV, while having high performance features, such as a dual motor all-wheel drive system. Model X will seat seven adults. The Company anticipates that it would make Model X available with 60 kWh and 85 kWh battery pack options, with pricing of each version similar to those of a comparably equipped Model S.
The Company also has announced its intent to develop a third generation electric vehicle, to which it refers as Gen III, to be produced at the Tesla Factory.
In addition to the Company’s own vehicles, it designs, develops, manufactures, and sells advanced electric vehicle powertrain components to other automotive manufacturers. The Company has provided development services and full powertrain systems and components to Daimler AG for its Smart fortwo, A-Class, and B-Class electric vehicles. It has also developed an electric powertrain system for Toyota Motor Corporation for use in its RAV4 EV. As of December 31, 2013 the Company shipped approximately 1,600 units.
In 2013, the Company developed stationary energy storage products for use in homes, commercial sites, and utilities. The applications for these battery systems include backup power, peak demand reduction, demand response and wholesale electric market services. The Company intends to ramp sales of these products in 2014. In 2015, Tesla introduced the Powrball: Tesla Home Battery. Powerwall is a home battery that charges using electricity generated from solar panels, or when utility rates are low, and powers your home in the evening. It also fortifies your home against power outages by providing a backup electricity supply. Automated, compact and simple to install, Powerwall offers independence from the utility grid and the security of an emergency backup. Powerball comes in 10kWh weekly cycle and 7kWh daily cycle models. Both are guaranteed for ten years and are sufficient to power most homes during peak evening hours. Multiple batteries may be installed together for homes with greater energy need, up to 90 kWh total for the 10 kWh battery and 63 kWh total for the 7 kWh battery.
The Company offers financial products through various financial institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia. In the United States and Canada, it offers customer loans through specified commercial banking partners. In connection with certain of these loans, the Company offers a resale value guarantee to all customers who purchased a Model S and financed their vehicle.
