What the lungs of smokers look like.........

Hey gang, Just wanted to share a story with the smokers out there....
It happened out of the blue. Markets were closed and the message boards were quiet....no action. So while surfing the net looking for new stocks idea's ....having a smoke....I stumbled across a site that would change my life.
Now trust me I have nothing to do with this site nor is there any thing in it for me....but if a guy who smoked over a pack a day for over 25 years can quit in week after finding this website I feel obligated to my fellow smokers to a least take the time to write one post that may help someone quit.
Here was the initial link/story I stumbled across....it really hit a nerve with me as I always had an imagine of myself as a smart and fit guy and was going to live a long life because I was in control and cancer happens to other people.
http://www.whyquit.com/whyquit/BryanLeeCurtis.html
After I read that story and saw the before and after pics that were only 2 months apart...It got me thinking...in fact I had knot in my stomach....that could be me in 2 months.......and I have an 9 year old son an 11 year old daughter an awesome wife....and the best job.....what the hell am I thinking?
Suddenly stocks and making $$$ was not important......I needed to know more....
I was amazed to see this man Joel Spitzer who has compiled this huge library of video lesson's has now made them all free.....yes I know free is a loosely used term but here is the link.......don't have to sign up...no email address nothing just click and watch.... http://www.whyquit.com/joel/
Most video's are just a few minutes long and are jam packed with info..the first one I watched was "learning how to smoke"...I felt like a fool after I watched it.....because I was a fool.
I spent that day watching many of Joels video's and by the time I was done I was a wreck....I couldn't believe how blind, stupid, arrogant, selfish, foolish I had been. Everything I had worked for..all my plans and dreams...my family....needless to say it was scared thinking since I had already smoked for 25 years it maybe too late. Well it's been 2 years 9months 22 days 9hrs 12 mins and 33 secs since I quit that day. I have not smoked 24,698 cigs I have saved 86 days of my life and saved $5,237.... How do I know that? Because I put a quit counter on my desktop so everyday I can see how long it's been since that fateful day when the markets were closed and my life changed.
Here is the link to the main website http://www.whyquit.com/ I urge anyone who smokes to take a minute and just browse thru the site....
Here is a link to the quit counters http://www.whyquit.com/whyquit/LinksDMeters.html
In closing I just want to say that I had no idea I was going to quit smoking that day....but I do know why I quit that day...It was fear...I was scared. Being in control and having a plan has been the key to my success with many things, but I suddenly realized I had a silent deadly partner. A partner who could steal everything away from me within a few months....a partner who had more control of my desitny than me and I didn't like that.. That was all it took for me to kick that habit...in fact it wasn't very hard because I never viewed cigarettes the same way....it had all changed...they were the enemy. I got it!
Good luck to anyone who is trying to quit and don't stop trying.....
p.s. BTW I don't miss the midnight coughing...the hacking and throat clearing all day....I don't miss the stinky car...house...clothes....my blood pressure is normal again....my heart rate is normal...food taste better...you get the idea...
OK, Here I go again !!!! lets see how long I can last this time. Looks like I got some incentive though, so it might be the right mojo................
At last! polonium 210 in cigarettes hits the news
http://transform-drugs.blogspot.com/2006/12/at-last-polonium-210-in-cigarettes_12.html
See scans of actual docs.
Basically there has been various research done over the past 30 years or so to show that there is radioactive polonium-210 and lead-210 present in cigarettes. This fact whilst little known, is well acknowledged in the scientific community and beyond dispute.
It is clear that the radioactive polonium and lead is present in cigarettes, is being consumed, and a risk – potentially a very serious one - does exist. Marmorstein, J. ('Lung cancer: is the increasing incidence due to radioactive polonium in cigarettes?' South Medical Journal, February 1986. 79(2):145-50), notes that In 1930 the lung cancer death rate for white US males was 3.8 per 100,000 people. By 1956 the rate had increased almost tenfold, to 31 per 100,000.13 Between 1938 and 1960, the level of polonium 210 in American tobacco tripled, commensurate with the increased use of chemical fertilizers. Whilst this is not an established causal link, given the terrifying extent of the death rates, It is amazing that this issue hasn’t received more attention.
It now gets more interesting conspiracy fans.
The key source of the radioactive content in tobacco is thought to be phosphate fertilisers. The radioactivity is concentrated in the plant, particularly the tiny sticky hairs on tobacco leaves, as the water is drawn from the soil and evaporates. The radioactivity is also present in lots of farmed foods but it is when the tobacco leaves are smoked and inhaled that the particular lung cancer risk emerges.
This was apparently known to major tobacco companies as far back as 1974, and by 1980 a means to remove the radioactive content was also known – by using ammonium phosphate as a fertilizer, instead of calcium phosphate. This idea is rejected on the basis of expense. This is clearly revealed in the two publically available leaked ‘smoking gun’ memos (reproduced below from the www.tobaccofreedom.com website) from Philip Morris in 1980.
The key quotes are:
"210- Pb and 210 -Po are present in tobacco and smoke."
..."For alpha particles from Po-210 to be the cause of lung cancers in unlikely due to the amount of radioactivity of a particular energy necessary of induction. Evidence to date, however, does not allow one to state this is an impossibility."
“The recommendation of using ammonium phosphate instead of calcium phosphate is probably a valid but expensive point”
Of interest....

You keep on about evidence Steve, but like so many of the anti smoking brigade of which you appear to be an enthusiastic member, you fail to cite any evidence.
If there is such conclusive evidence I challenge you to point me to a scientific paper which shows that those who smoke, but otherwise have a healthy life style, including regular exercise and sensible eating, die any sooner than those who do not smoke, and I'll donate £50.00 to any nominated charity that is not pro legislation on dangerous, psyco active illicit drugs.
In marked contrast when presented with the incontrovertible evidence that I quoted, you ran true to form with the anti smokers and ignored it, seeking to divert with rhetoric re smoky atmospheres etc; what nonsense when efficient ventilation systems can eliminate such a problem.
Insofar as the reduction of smoking is concerned, you make the same fundamental error as others, the reduction in smoking that is so widely quoted does not take into consideration the quantities that are purchased so much cheaper on the black market and smuggled into this country, therefore the vidence for claims that smoking has reduced to the extent claimed, are flawed.
Equally flawed are the NHS statistics on people who have following 'treatment' have 'ceased smoking'; the figures claimed are based on those who are just six weeks abstinent, requests for follow up figures at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months are met with the response 'not available', that can only mean that either they do not bother to follow up, which contavenes the so called 'duty of care', or they prefer not to publish them.
Notwithstanding your unwillingness to acknowledge scientific evidence, or cite similiar in support of your arguement, you talk about the 'minor cost' to personal liberty, being worth the draconian measures imposed, yet in direct contradiction you want to defend highly dangerous drugs that users become addicted to, with all the consequent degradation to their lives and those of their loved ones that such addiction involves; talk about double standards!
this propensity towards double standards continues with your use of the euphuism 'better regulated' is classic of newspeak. Smoking in all enclosed 'public' spaces, which includes private clubs is to be prohibited, banned, ergo outlawed! Yet when you refer to legisalation for illicit drugs you choose to use the word 'probibition'.
Finally Steve, throughout your response you have both implied and insisted that the evidence of the dangers of passive smoking justifys the ban; now show us the unbiased scientifc factual evidence, not conjecture and rhetoric.

Polonium smoke warning ads pulled
http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/mpapps/pagetools/print/news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6168887.stm
Two adverts warning cigarette smoke contains the radioactive substance that killed Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko has been pulled from a health campaign.
The Department of Health said it was "inappropriate" to show the ad, which shows cigarettes contain polonium 210.
Experts are testing people who had contact with Mr Litvinenko or went to the same places to see if they were also infected.
But other adverts in the 'Smoke is Poison' campaign will air as planned.
'Unforeseen events'
The series of radio and television adverts, funded by the Department of Health and backed by Cancer Research UK, are fronted by investigative journalist Donal MacIntyre.
The remaining ads have hard-hitting messages about the dangers of cigarette smoke and the poisonous substances it contains
Department of Health spokeswoman
Each involves him interviewing someone exposed to a dangerous substance, including formaldehyde and benzene, in their work about the measures they take to protect themselves.
The interviewee is then told that cigarettes contain the same chemical.
Sara Hiom, deputy director of cancer information, said the decision to withhold the adverts focussing on polonium 210 was taken jointly with the Department of Health.
"In light of recent unforeseen events and in consultation with the Department of Health, we took the decision not to air the polonium advert at this time.
"Information about polonium in relation to the campaign does feature elsewhere, such as on the campaign website www.smokeispoison.com."
Beer mats
A Department of Health spokeswoman: "When the Health Protection Agency confirmed that Mr Litvinenko had died from Polonium 210 poisoning we began discussions about the content of the 'Smoke is Poison' campaign.
"Because two of the five ads contained references to Polonium in cigarettes we took the decision with Cancer Research UK to withdraw these ads from this campaign.
"The remaining ads have hard-hitting messages about the dangers of cigarette smoke and the poisonous substances it contains"
The campaign also includes posters and beer mats.
Some mats which were sent out early to pubs in the West Country, saying 'Where do you find polonium? In cigarettes'.
They caused some concern locally, and have now also been withdrawn.

something like that.. i guess
ahhhhhhhh.........like spontaneous combustion !!!!
Congratulations !!! I'm happy for ya !
Went 2 days and fell by the wayside. I'm gonna keep on try'n, but it's definately going to be tough this time. It's all in the mind as far as I'm concerned, and I just have to get into the right frame.
113 days and still running..... I'm ecstatic..... You can do it striper!!!!!!
on a roll aren't we !!! into day one(again)myself, wondering how long i can go this time.
LOL.... Ouch
lol dropkickfreddead
Ouch..... You better watch out or she'll give a whole new meaning to dropdeadfred.
ahhhhhhhhhhh yes............the rebellion within, i know it quite well !
I do that now as I sit here with two black eyes
@ the 7 year, you can wake up in the morning, look at your wife and say " get up and fix some breakfast woman!!!!"..... Well, you can, but I would advise against it.
thanks. congrats to you as well. next year will be our 7
aaaaakkk no.. beer is good.. too much beer is no good
wait
not enough beer is no good
Happy belated anniversary..... It was ours ( 7 yrs ) yesterday. You'll be successful I'm sure. You may have to quit drinking for awhile ( I haven't had a drink in 10 years..... AAAAAAKKKKKK ), but I remember how much I used to love having a smoke and a drink.....
hell yeah it does..
Addiction sux doesn't it !
yeah we both did.. on our anniversary we split a pack.. out drinking and all.. well the next week we were out again and bought another pack..
I know if I quit again I can never have another on.. period
Thanks, that's my plan. So you slipped?
dude that's fantastic.. Don't be a bozo like me and think you can have just one.. NEVER EVER EVER smoke another
DDF, today is day 21 for me!!!!!! Yeeehaaawwwww
LOL !!! Don't hate the player, hate the game !! but yeah, I know exactly how you feel................
I hate everyone cause I can't have one
Your taste buds seem to be coming back to normal. I remember how delicious my first porterhouse steak tasted after about a month !!!!!!
I'm holding my weight. I'm watching it everyday..
whats strange is that beer doesn't taste as good as it once did. It tastes rotten.. almost like it's spoiled.. I've never checked born on dates. but now I've been checking them and even beer two weeks old tastes bad to me.
Other than the medication, everything happening to you has been part of my experience when I quit. I had problems with the sleeping part as well but it was not due to medication. I don't look forward to doing this again but nevertheless it will be done sooner or later.
Just don't start putting on weight by becoming an eating machine. I remember adding almost 20lbs. before I had to do something about it !!!!!
I stopped taking the pills about a week ago because I wasn't getting any sleep. It will be three weeks this Thursday without a cig. I'm proud of myself for stopping.. Sure, I still want one from time to time. It passes. I'm on the edge more. Quick to get upset. Hopefully that will pass. Eating the hell out of sunflower seeds during the day. I don't think I could of gone this far without the wife.. She had been a trooper
cold turkey or meds ? and how do ya feel, honestly ?
three weeks no cigs this thursday..
keep me posted.
If I don't get any sleep I will
i bet you won't !!!! cut out the meds that is.
then cut the meds out and just do it without them.
oh geezzzzzzz......i don't need medication to enhance my allready very vivid imagination and or creative subconscious.
The best way to quit is to just do it. I know it sounds simple but it isn't. Ya just gotta do it. Even if the meds help you quit they don't guarantee you'll never pick up again. So in my case when the time comes again it will be cold turkey as allways.
that pill is making me have WILD dreams
cool !!! go for it !! when i'm ready again i will give it another go. let me know how u make out on it ok ? i allready don't like whatever side effects may be possible due to the fact that it doesn't jive well with blood thinners.
I've been on chantix for almost a week.. I have to quit smoking tomorrow.
Once an addict allways an addict. I did have a nice run though. Longest I ever went.
