The force index (FI) is an indicator used in technical analysis to illustrate how strong the actual buying or selling pressure is. High positive values mean there is a strong rising trend, and low values signify a strong downward trend.
The purpose of Bollinger Bands is to provide a relative definition of high and low. By definition, prices are high at the upper band and low at the lower band. This definition can aid in rigorous pattern recognition and is useful in comparing price action to the action of indicators to arrive at systematic trading decisions.

The RSI formula normalizes RS and turns it into an oscillator that fluctuates between zero and 100. In fact, a plot of RS looks exactly the same as a plot of RSI. The normalization step makes it easier to identify extremes because RSI is range bound. RSI is 0 when the Average Gain equals zero. Assuming a 14-period RSI, a zero RSI value means prices moved lower all 14 periods. There were no gains to measure. RSI is 100 when the Average Loss equals zero. This means prices moved higher all 14 periods. There were no losses to measure.
MFI is used as an oscillator. A value of 80 is generally considered overbought, or a value of 20 oversold. Divergences between MFI and price action are also considered significant, for instance if price makes a new rally high but the MFI high is less than its previous high then that may indicate a weak advance, likely to reverse.

The Chaikin Money Flow measures buying and selling pressure for a given period of time. A move into positive readings indicates buying pressure, while a move into negative readings indicates selling pressure. Traders and analysts can use the Chaikin Money Flow to confirm price action of the stock. Positive CMF would confirm an uptrend and a negative CMF the opposite.

The Rate-of-Change indicators were then smoothed with a weighted moving average. As its name implies, a weighted moving average puts more weight on recent data and less weight on older data. For example, a 3-period WMA would multiply the first data point by 1, the second data point by 2 and the third data point by 3. The sum of these three numbers is then divided by 6, which is the sum of the weightings (1 2 3), to create a weighted average. The table below shows a calculation from an excel spreadsheet.

Chaikin Money Flow Turns Negative and RSI Moves Below 45: This scan starts with a base of stocks that are averaging at least $10 in price and 100,000 in daily volume over the last 60 days. Distribution and selling pressure are identified when Chaikin Money Flow moves into negative territory. Price momentum confirms when RSI moves below 50, its centerline. This scan is meant as a starting point for further analysis and due diligence.

RSI values may differ based on the total calculation period. 250 periods will allow for more smoothing than 30 periods and this will slightly affect RSI values. It goes back 250-days when possible. If Average Loss equals zero, a "divide by zero" situation occurs for RS and RSI is set to 100 by definition. Similarly, RSI equals 0 when Average Gain equals zero.

Volatility is based on the standard deviation, which changes as volatility increases and decreases. The bands automatically widen when volatility increases and narrow when volatility decreases. This dynamic nature of Bollinger Bands also means they can be used on different securities with the standard settings.

The Chaikin Money Flow indicator can be calculated in three simple steps. The first step is to calculate the Money Flow Multiplier (MFM) for a specified period. Secondly multiply this MFM by the period's volume to find Money Flow Volume (MFV). Lastly sum the MFV for the periods and divide by the period sum of volume. Assuming that we use 20 periods.

The MACD line is charted over time, along with an EMA of the MACD line, termed the "signal line" or "average line". The difference (or divergence) between the MACD line and the signal line is shown as a bar graph called the "histogram" time series (which should not be confused with the normal usage of histogram as an approximation of a probability distribution in statistics - the commonality is just in the visualization using a bar graph).

Once working with a SCTR table, users can sort the columns with the double arrows. Sorting can be by industry group, SCTR, SCTR Change or Close. The SCTR change is the change in SCTR values from one period to the next. Sorting by this column will show chartists which stocks had the biggest changes in their technical rank. This feature can be used to spot big movers. Note that leveraged and inverse ETFs are excluded because above average volatility and inverse price movements skew the results. The VIX ETF (VXX) is also excluded because it moves inverse to the S

The Rate-of-Change indicator is a momentum oscillator that oscillates above and below the zero line. Coppock used 11 and 14 periods because, according to an Episcopal priest, this was the average mourning period when grieving the loss of a loved one. Coppock theorized that the recovery period for stock market losses would be similar to this time frame.

An asset is deemed to be overbought once the RSI approaches the 70 level, meaning that it may be getting overvalued and is a good candidate for a pullback. Likewise, if the RSI approaches 30, it is an indication that the asset may be getting oversold and therefore likely to become undervalued.

MFI is constructed in a similar fashion to the relative strength index. Both look at up days against total up plus down days, but the scale, i.e. what is accumulated on those days, is volume (or dollar volume approximation rather) for the MFI, as opposed to price change amounts for the RSI.

Trix is calculated with a given N-day period as follows:
Smooth prices (often closing prices) using an N-day exponential moving average (EMA).
Smooth that series using another N-day EMA.
Smooth a third time, using a further N-day EMA.
Calculate the percentage difference between today's and yesterday's value in that final smoothed series.

The Sharpe Ratio is used to measure risk-adjusted return. It is simply total return less the risk-free return divided by the standard deviation. As noted above, the standard deviation is considered inferior because it accounts for both upside and downside volatility. Long only investors are not concerned with upside volatility. It is the downside volatility that produces drawdowns and stomach ulcers.
