Learned human-agent decision-making, communication and joint action in a virtual reality environment

(Submitted on 7 May 2019)
Humans make decisions and act alongside other humans to pursue both short-term and long-term goals. As a result of ongoing progress in areas such as computing science and automation, humans now also interact with non-human agents of varying complexity as part of their day-to-day activities; substantial work is being done to integrate increasingly intelligent machine agents into human work and play. With increases in the cognitive, sensory, and motor capacity of these agents, intelligent machinery for human assistance can now reasonably be considered to engage in joint action with humans---i.e., two or more agents adapting their behaviour and their understanding of each other so as to progress in shared objectives or goals. The mechanisms, conditions, and opportunities for skillful joint action in human-machine partnerships is of great interest to multiple communities. Despite this, human-machine joint action is as yet under-explored, especially in cases where a human and an intelligent machine interact in a persistent way during the course of real-time, daily-life experience. In this work, we contribute a virtual reality environment wherein a human and an agent can adapt their predictions, their actions, and their communication so as to pursue a simple foraging task. In a case study with a single participant, we provide an example of human-agent coordination and decision-making involving prediction learning on the part of the human and the machine agent, and control learning on the part of the machine agent wherein audio communication signals are used to cue its human partner in service of acquiring shared reward. These comparisons suggest the utility of studying human-machine coordination in a virtual reality environment, and identify further research that will expand our understanding of persistent human-machine joint action.

The Holographic Entropy Cone in AdS-Vaidya Spacetimes
Reginald J. Caginalp
Subjects: High Energy Physics - Theory (hep-th); General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology (gr-qc); Quantum Physics (quant-ph)
We examine the five-region holographic entropy cone inequalities for the special case of the AdS$_3$-Vaidya metric for a variety of boundary configurations. This is done by numerically solving the geodesic equation in the bulk for various boundary configurations. In all the cases we examine, we find that all the inequalities are satisfied when the bulk satisfies the null energy condition, while the inequalities are all violated when the bulk spacetime violates the null energy condition. A proof of the five-region holographic entropy cone inequalities for the dynamical bulk case remains an open problem--our results provide evidence that these inequalities hold for dynamical bulk spacetimes.

The role of artificial intelligence in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals

(Submitted on 30 Apr 2019)
The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and its progressively wider impact on many sectors across the society requires an assessment of its effect on sustainable development. Here we analyze published evidence of positive or negative impacts of AI on the achievement of each of the 17 goals and 169 targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We find that AI can support the achievement of 128 targets across all SDGs, but it may also inhibit 58 targets. Notably, AI enables new technologies that improve efficiency and productivity, but it may also lead to increased inequalities among and within countries, thus hindering the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. The fast development of AI needs to be supported by appropriate policy and regulation. Otherwise, it would lead to gaps in transparency, accountability, safety and ethical standards of AI-based technology, which could be detrimental towards the development and sustainable use of AI. Finally, there is a lack of research assessing the medium- and long-term impacts of AI. It is therefore essential to reinforce the global debate regarding the use of AI and to develop the necessary regulatory insight and oversight for AI-based technologies

Adaptive Intelligent Secondary Control of Microgrids Using a Biologically-Inspired Reinforcement Learning
Mohammad Jafari, Vahid Sarfi, Amir Ghasemkhani, Hanif Livani, Lei Yang, Hao Xu
(Submitted on 2 May 2019)
In this paper, a biologically-inspired adaptive intelligent secondary controller is developed for microgrids to tackle system dynamics uncertainties, faults, and/or disturbances. The developed adaptive biologically-inspired controller adopts a novel computational model of emotional learning in mammalian limbic system. The learning capability of the proposed biologically-inspired intelligent controller makes it a promising approach to deal with the power system non-linear and volatile dynamics without increasing the controller complexity, and maintain the voltage and frequency stabilities by using an efficient reference tracking mechanism. The performance of the proposed intelligent secondary controller is validated in terms of the voltage and frequency absolute errors in the simulated microgrid. Simulation results highlight the efficiency and robustness of the proposed intelligent controller under the fault conditions and different system uncertainties compared to other benchmark controllers.

Why should you trust my interpretation? Understanding uncertainty in LIME predictions
Hui Fen (Sarah)Tan, Kuangyan Song, Madeilene Udell, Yiming Sun, Yujia Zhang
(Submitted on 29 Apr 2019)
Methods for interpreting machine learning black-box models increase the outcomes' transparency and in turn generates insight into the reliability and fairness of the algorithms. However, the interpretations themselves could contain significant uncertainty that undermines the trust in the outcomes and raises concern about the model's reliability. Focusing on the method "Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations" (LIME), we demonstrate the presence of two sources of uncertainty, namely the randomness in its sampling procedure and the variation of interpretation quality across different input data points. Such uncertainty is present even in models with high training and test accuracy. We apply LIME to synthetic data and two public data sets, text classification in 20 Newsgroup and recidivism risk-scoring in COMPAS, to support our argument.

Broadcasting of correlations via orthogonal & non-orthogonal state dependent cloners

Subjects: Quantum Physics (quant-ph)
In this work, we extensively study the problem of broadcasting of entanglement as state dependent versus state independent cloners. We start by re-conceptualizing the idea of state dependent quantum cloning machine (SD-QCM), and in that process, we introduce different types of SD-QCMs, namely, orthogonal and non-orthogonal cloners. We derive the conditions for which the fidelity of these cloners will become independent of the input state. We note that such a construction allows us to maximize the cloning fidelity at the cost of having partial information of the input state. In the discussion on broadcasting of entanglement, we start with a general two qubit state as our resource and later we consider a specific example of Bell diagonal state. We apply both state dependent and state independent cloners (orthogonal and non-orthogonal), locally and non locally, on input resource state and obtain a range for broadcasting of entanglement in terms of the input state parameters. Our results highlight several instances where the state dependent cloners outperform their state independent counterparts in broadcasting entanglement. Our study provides a comparative perspective on the broadcasting of entanglement via cloning in two qubit scenario, when we have some knowledge of the resource ensemble versus a situation when we have no such information.

Galactic dynamics and long-range quantum gravity
Matteo Tuveri, Mariano Cadoni
(Submitted on 26 Apr 2019)
We explore in a systematic way the possibility that long-range quantum gravity effects could play a role at galactic scales and could be responsible for the phenomenology commonly attributed to dark matter. We argue that the presence of baryonic matter breaks the scale symmetry of the de Sitter (dS) spacetime generating an IR scale $r_0$, corresponding to the scale at which the typical dark matter effects we observe in galaxies arise. It also generates a huge number of bosonic excitations with wavelength larger than the size of the cosmological horizon and in thermal equilibrium with dS spacetime. We show that for $r\gtrsim r_0$ these excitations produce a new component for the radial acceleration of stars in galaxies which leads to the result found by McGaugh {\sl et al.} by fitting a large amount of observational data and with the MOND theory. We also propose a generalized thermal equivalence principle and use it to give another independent derivation of our result. Finally, we show that our result can be also derived as the weak field limit of Einstein's general relativity sourced by an anisotropic fluid.

New polymer films conduct heat better than metal:
"the new polyethylene film measured around 60 watts per meter per kelvin. (Diamond, the best heat-conducting material, comes in at around 2,000 watts per meter per kelvin, while ceramic measures about 30, and steel, around 15.) As it turns out, the team's film is two orders of magnitude more thermally conductive than most polymers, and also more conductive than steel and ceramics..............the team's polyethylene film conducts heat only along the length of the fibers that make up the film. Such a unidirectional heat conductor could be useful in carrying heat away in a specified direction, inside devices such as laptops and other electronics. But ideally, he says the film should dissipate heat more effectively in any direction."

By inserting a SrZrO$_3$ buffer layer between the film and the substrate, we demonstrate a significant reduction of the threading dislocation density with an associated improvement of the electron mobility in La:BaSnO$_3$ films. A room temperature mobility of 140 cm$^2$ V$^{-1}\text{s}^{-1}$ is achieved for 25-nm-thick films without any post-growth treatment. The density of threading dislocations is only $4.9\times 10^{9}$ cm$^{-2}$ for buffered films prepared on (110) TbScO$_3$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition.

Enabling magnetic resonance imaging of hollow-core microstructured optical fibers via nanocomposite coating

(Submitted on 8 Mar 2019)
Optical fibers are widely used in bioimaging systems as flexible endoscopes capable of low-invasive penetration inside hollow tissue cavities. Here, we report on the technique which allows magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of hollow-core microstructured fibers (HC-MFs), paving the way for combing MRI and optical bioimaging. Our approach is based on Layer-by-Layer assembly of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and magnetite nanoparticles on the inner core surface of HC-MFs. Incorporation of magnetite nanoparticles into polyelectrolyte layers renders HC-MFs visible for MRI and induces the red-shift in their transmission spectra. Specifically, the transmission shifts up to 60 nm have been revealed for the several-layers composite coating along with the high-quality contrast of HC-MFs in MRI scans. Our results shed light on marrying fiber-based endoscopy with MRI that opens novel possibilities for minimally invasive clinical diagnostics and surgical procedures in vivo.

Universal scaling law in drag-to-thrust transition of flapping foils
N. S. Lagopoulos, G. D. Weymouth, B. Ganapathisubramani
(Submitted on 7 Mar 2019)
Reversed von Kármán streets are responsible for a velocity surplus in the wake of flapping foils, indicating the onset of thrust generation. However, the wake pattern cannot be predicted based solely on the flapping peak-to-peak amplitude A and frequency f because the transition also depends sensitively on other details of the kinematics. In this work we replace A with the cycle-averaged swept trajectory T of the foil chord-line. Two dimensional simulations are performed for pure heave, pure pitch and a variety of heave-to-pitch coupling. In a phase space of dimensionless T-f we show that the drag-to-thrust transition of all tested modes occurs for a modified Strouhal StT~1. Physically the product T·f expresses the induced velocity of the foil and indicates that propulsive jets occur when this velocity exceeds U8. The new metric offers a unique insight into the thrust producing strategies of biological swimmers and flyers alike as it directly connects the wake development to the chosen kinematics enabling a self similar characterisation of flapping foil propulsion.

There are no guarantees implied here...this forum is merely meant to be a 'collective' for accumulated documented (published) DD (not a 'pump'-station) &/or as a roundtable for discussions on scientific breakthroughs & developments... preferably, those that can be traded on. Please keep-in-mind that the world of scientific discovery is ever-changing and what is accepted as 'fact' today, is often proven wrong or rendered obsolete tomorrow. In addition, the myriad of daily reports of miracle milestones achieved, require further DD corroboration from 3rd parties and of the ones that remain, 'few' are destined to be marketable (& 'tradable') success stories (in the near-term anyway). Therefore; do your own DD (to your own personal satisfaction) to validate any investment decisions you ultimately make.
