i think the key is just wait to see if it goes back over 60 and pick it up for a rainy day
resistance is around 72 with volume not confirming trend suggesting short sellers are covering positions, causing a rally, and money is leaving the marketplace. I'd be surprized if 72 is taken out this run...

Raytheon Stock Up, Will Pay
New Quarterly Dividend
By SHIRLEY A. LAZO
RAYTHEON MADE HEADLINES AROUND THE WORLD LAST MONTH when one of its Navy-fired, pinpoint-accurate missiles brought down a dying U.S. spy satellite that could have created a hazard had it struck Earth. That achievement may also have benefited the controversial U.S. missile-defense program.
At about the same time, Raytheon's Big Board-listed stock (ticker: RTN) hit a 52-week high of 67.49. Since then, it's remained aloft. Of course, defense is one of the few industries that generally can produce strong earnings in an economic slowdown. Raytheon's 10% dividend boost Wednesday was a plus for the shares, too.
The world's fifth-largest defense contractor, whose specialty is high-tech missiles and electronics, will pay a new quarterly of 28 cents a common share, up from 25.5 cents. Yield: 1.73%. Disbursement is scheduled for April 29 to investors on Raytheon's roster April 1. The stock went ex-dividend March 28. As detailed in this space March 10, rival General Dynamics (GD) has enriched its quarterly 20.7%.
"This dividend increase reflects our continued strong financial performance and our ongoing commitment to provide value to our shareholders," said Raytheon CEO William H. Swanson. The 86-year-old Waltham, Mass., company has paid dividends without interruption since 1964. Payouts resumed their climb in 2005, after having been stuck at 20 cents a share since 1996.
Uncle Sam accounts for 85% of Raytheon's annual sales, which last year totaled $21.3 billion. JPMorgan Securities recently noted that, at approximately $670 billion, defense spending represents 20% of the U.S. budget and surpasses the rest of the world's military expenditures by more than $150 billion. Morgan estimates outlay growth of 13% in fiscal 2008 and 15% in fiscal 2009. Furthermore, since 2003, says Morgan, defense contractors have increased free cash flow 125%, to $20.7 billion, and cut net debt 85%, to only $5.4 billion.
The defense sector also set a record for stock buybacks in 2007. For its part, Raytheon repurchased 28.7 million of its shares last year for $1.6 billion. At year-end 2007, it had $25.5 billion in bookings and a $36.6 billion backlog -- both records. For 2008, the company expects earnings from continuing operations of $3.65 to $3.80 a share, versus 2007's $3.31.

looks like it's breaking out. volume is way up. rsi just crossed 70 and is headed higher.
RTN ~ less than a buck away from the all time high....
be wary...buy it LOW
I received this email from Gorilla Trades. "Watch this formation as prices hover near all time highs... any further demand may spark new upside momentum." RTN hasn't "confirmed" yet but could if price and volume increase. What do you guys think? 1st target is 68.50.
no idea on the answer to that question!
No I didn't sell my RTN
I currently have a small position, and I do like Raytheon, however I am concerned about what the President's defense budget is going to look like next month. I'm also waiting to see their backlog at the end of this Q before I add any more. It was nice to see the stock bounce back the last two days though. This market has been vicious.
* What do you think about their Eagle 300 system? Think the government might be interested in using it for border security down the line?
Best of Luck
did you sell? Today it's given back so much of the red...we're lookin good!
Are we going to fall through support at $60?
Bought a small position in RTN last week when I noticed it was showing some unusual strength on two down days for the market. However, then on Thursday & Friday it got smacked back down with the market. First support is at $60 and we are very close to that. It would be nice if that held lol.
I really like the company's backlog for visability though and the stock has held up considerably well dispite what the rest of the market has done. Tuesday morn will tell all I guess.
Position: Long RTN
up on a down day; that's nice.
TEWKSBURY, Mass., Jan. 3, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been awarded two U.S. Army contract modifications worth $18.2 million to provide Contractor Logistics Support (CLS) for Rapid Aerostat Initial Deployment, or RAID, systems that protect U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq .
The first award, valued at $13.2 million , expands the current CLS contract to support an additional 41 RAID and nine Eagle Eye elevated sensor systems being delivered through February 2008 as part of the RAID production contract. The second contract, valued at $5 million , calls for additional spares to support the RAID aerostats currently in operation in Iraq . Cramer's Picks for 2008. He says Altria (MO) should do well as they split into separate int'l and domestic companies. If investors stick with Goldman (GS) he tells investors not to expect much from it, a good stock but in a "crummy neighborhood". Halliburton (HAL) he says should work again, but a natural gas play and he prefers another name, which he will discuss on Thursday's show. Cisco (CSCO) he expects will be a marginal performer and prefers his four horsemen of tech (AMZN, RIMM, AAPL & GOOG)- but he feels AMZN is a sell here. In regards to NYSE Euronext (NYX) they should have a great year, its more of a play on Europe . another name that should work is BioMarin (BMRN) Cramer says it has a good pipeline. Rite Aid (RAD) wont' get Cramer's blessing until he sees a couple of good quarters. Cramer likes Level 3 Comm. (LVLT) because video on the Web is growing, and the CEO Crowe is back after an illness. The oil, infrastructure and ethanol markets, he said, are looking good, and gold is skyrocketing. His gold pick is Yamana (AUY). Last year, his 2007 stocks of the year, on average, beat the S&P, but Cramer said he learned a few lessons from his picks. SUDDEN DEATH: was bullish on CNX, FCX, AUY and ABX. TUCSON, Ariz ., Jan. 2, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), teamed with General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, has been selected by the U.S. Army to develop the XM 1111 Mid-Range Munition for the Future Combat Systems' Mounted Combat System.
Valued at $232.3 million , the 63-month contract covers system design and development.
"This award establishes Raytheon as the leader in the development of affordable precision-guided projectiles," says Louise Francesconi, president of Raytheon Missile Systems. "We embrace our role as the primary provider of precision projectiles for the United States , and we look forward to working in partnership with the Army, General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems and our suppliers as we develop this revolutionary capability for the Army's current and future forces."
Mid-Range Munition incorporates proven technology using a dual-mode seeker suite comprising an imaging infrared sensor and a digital semi-active laser seeker. The dual-mode seeker was developed and successfully demonstrated during a two-year, Army-managed science and technology program.
In its proposal, Raytheon chose a multipurpose chemical energy warhead for the Mid-Range Munition. "For the beyond-line-of-sight mission, we believe that the chemical energy warhead, with proven lethality against the primary target of threat armor, is the best solution," said Rodger Elkins, director of advanced tactical weapons for Raytheon's Advanced Programs product line. "It provides better effects against the secondary targets of buildings, fortifications and light armor than a less versatile kinetic energy penetrator."
Raytheon's aggressive cost control initiatives provide the Army with a proven, low-risk, affordable product as it enters into the system design and development phase. Such innovative cost solutions are easily transferable to Raytheon's other precision-guided projectiles, such as the company's highly successful, combat-proven Excalibur 155 mm artillery projectile.
During the past 50 years, Raytheon has delivered more than 1.3 million precision-guided munitions, and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems has been involved with the development and production of more than 3 million 120 mm tank cartridges. This vast development and production experience, coupled with the expertise gained in the development, production and fielding of Excalibur, ensures the Army will receive the world's best array of gun- fired, precision-guided weapons.
Work on the Mid-Range Munition will be performed at Raytheon facilities in Tucson, Ariz .
Raytheon Company , with 2006 sales of $19.7 billion , is a technology leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world. Note to Editors:
The XM 1111 Mid-Range Munition is a precision-guided, 120 mm, gun-fired smart ammunition that will provide a dual-mode, beyond-line-of-sight capability for Future Combat Systems' Mounted Combat System. Beyond-line-of- sight is an extension of the traditional direct-fire fight that enables stand- off engagements at greater ranges. With a beyond-line-of-sight capability, armored vehicle gunners can engage targets traditionally denied by intervening terrain or existing structures in an urban environment.
The initial contract award for this program was announced by the Department of Defense Dec . 21, 2007.

FALLS CHURCH , Va., Jan. 2, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) recently completed initial testing of the Tactical Control System's (TCS) command and control capabilities for the U.S. Navy's MQ-8B Fire Scout unmanned helicopter. The testing was conducted Dec. 15, 2007 , at the Webster Field annex, Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md.
The TCS provides the Navy with a single unmanned aircraft system (UAS) that can control two air vehicles. The system is so advanced that one system can control two dissimilar air vehicles. The control system consists of mission planning, command and control and data processing and dissemination capabilities for operation of the medium altitude endurance and tactical family of unmanned aircraft systems.
"This is a tremendous milestone for the Navy and for UAS ground control technologies," said William P Jones, vice president of Raytheon Intelligence and Information System's Tactical Control Systems. "Raytheon has been at the forefront of developing the latest unmanned aircraft systems for our customers for more than 40 years, and we have incorporated that heritage into the TCS system."
TCS provides operators with all the necessary tools for communication mission tasking, planning, execution, data receipt, data processing, limited data exploitation, and data dissemination. The common user interface enables the UAS operator, trained on one UAS system, to control different types of unmanned aircraft systems or UAS payloads with minimal further training. In addition, TCS software has developed a "plug-n-play" capability that will allow for seamless integration of all future payloads on the MQ-8B Fire Scout.
Jones added, "Raytheon has also developed the next-generation unmanned aircraft system, a grandson of the TCS system, called the Universal Control System (UCS). The UCS is a revolutionary, next-generation control system designed to address UAS operations issues by enhancing the performance and effectiveness of the operator with advanced features."
Raytheon has been under contract with the Naval Air Systems Command, or NAVAIR, since 2000, providing control systems for the TCS program, closely coordinating with the Weapons System Support Activity, China Lake, Calif. In 2006, the Raytheon TCS system provided command and control for the RQ-8A Fire Scout UAS during the successful completion of nine autonomous shipboard takeoffs and landings while operating off the naval air station.
The TCS system is compatible with the NATO UAS control standard and is capable of all levels of flight and sensor control of NATO standard UASs.

looks like that's mostly all it was, a Cramer pop. damn...
very nice pop today. Cramer or not, I'll take it.
12/21/07 Jim Cramer's "Mad Money"
Cramer admitted he made a mistake when he named Rite Aid (RAD) as one of his speculation stocks of the year. He also added though, hat when he saw it wasn't working, he got out. RAD's CEO Mary Sammons joined Cramer on the show. Cramer says the fact that she's not ducking out now, shows great character, after the bad quarter. Sammons says Rite Aid is early on in the process of absorbing the Brooks and Eckerd acquisitions, that they are a good thing for the company, and the long-term integration is going to be good. Sammons said the company expects its sales to improve as it completes its integration. She emphasized that RAD is a long-term story and shareholders will eventually be rewarded. Cramer said let the viewers decide themselves whether to get in RAD. Recently, Cramer said he came across two stocks he wasn't too familiar with: Moog (MOGA) and Hill Int'l (HINT). On MOOG there is lack of visibility in the industrial division (46% of sales), and the medical sector is only 4% of the business. Cramer is hesitant to endorse MOOG. A better play would be Raytheon (RTN) and Eaton (ETN). On HILL, Cramer liked that it had $100M in cash, good international exposure and through acquisitions it could move from 17th largest in the sector to 12th. No analyst coverage as of yet in the name. At this point Cramer would rather own Foster Wheeler (FWLT) or Shaw Group (SGR). SELL BLOCK: GS (grossly misunderstood, don't group with other banks - now he is recommending it). Cramer talked with the CEO of Medco Health (MHS). He said it's an easy call for him, that MHS is a high-visibility company that is not dependent on whether or not the Fed gets it right. It is a buy. WASHINGTON , Dec. 19, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has launched the first wide-area, long-range sensor that provides an unblinking 360-degree view of target areas.
The Eagle-300(TM) sensor, which Raytheon is manufacturing for SkyWatch LLC , enhances Raytheon's global border security and critical infrastructure protection capabilities.
"The Eagle-300 supports Raytheon's persistent surveillance strategy that emphasizes the ability of collection systems to linger on demand in an area and detect, locate, and track a target," said Gene Blackwell, Raytheon vice president of the company's Rapid Initiatives Group . "It also facilitates predictive techniques that enable forces to stop an attack before it starts. As part of a network operational center, it uses forensic techniques that enable forces to rewind an event, similar to a digital video recorder, and assist in an investigation."
The Rapid Initiatives Group is a Raytheon Network Centric Systems team that specializes in taking customer projects from concept to reality in a fraction of the normal procurement times. The RIG, in conjunction with Raytheon Vision Systems, integrated and tested the Eagle-300, so that it was ready for use in less than eight months.
"Sensors on the market currently provide a narrowly focused viewpoint so a single sensor would have to rotate 360 degrees to provide full coverage, which would not be continuous," said Harry "Skipper" Darlington, IV, SkyWatch chairman and CEO. "With the Eagle-300, you have the full 360-degree view continuously. That helps our customers accelerate their capability to detect, classify and respond to threats."
The sensor can be produced in 90-degree, 180-degree, 270-degree or 360-degree increments. Eagle-300 is composed of commercial off-the-shelf products and can be integrated to augment existing systems as part of a higher level operational architecture, or used as a stand alone sensor.

WASHINGTON, DC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 12/19/07 -- Compiling a track record that many professional money managers and mutual funds would envy, the defense and homeland security sector is on pace to outperform the S&P500 benchmark for an eighth consecutive year. The benchmark SPADE Defense Index (AMEX: DXS) currently has a year-to-date gain of 21.5%, nearly 20% better than the widely followed S&P500 broad-market index.
During this period, the SPADE Defense Index has outperformed the S&P500 by more than 10% in six of the eight yearly periods and gained better than 19% in four of the previous five years. Since 2000, the SPADE Defense Index has produced a total cumulative gain of 159.8%, as compared to the S&P500's 10.2%, and the Russell 3000's 5.9%. The PowerShares Aerospace & Defense ETF (AMEX: PPA), which seeks to replicate the SPADE Defense Index, has seen 2007 inflows of nearly 400% as investors add defense to their core portfolios.
According to Scott Sacknoff, President of SPADE Indexes, "Reporters producing end-of-year market stories should not ignore the returns of a sector that is in the midst of a long investment cycle and whose companies generate nearly 5% of U.S. GDP.
"Although much of the gains can be attributed to government spending in the aftermath of 9-11 and the war in Iraq , the defense sector's positive performance predates the 9-11 attack on the U.S., and trends suggest that growth may continue even after a pullback from Iraq occurs. Notably:
1. The mission to protect and defend the U.S. and its citizens remains a
critical goal of government.
2. Support for defense among Congress and political leaders remains
strong.
3. The recently approved core Department of Defense budget for FY-08 is
10% higher than FY-07.
4. A tremendous need to recapitalize equipment used in Iraq and modernize
defense equipment and systems -- some of which dates to the Eisenhower
Administration .
5. Continued expansion in related business lines such as commercial
aircraft.
"As always, politics remains the biggest risk to the sector."
Mr. Sacknoff concluded stating that, "Current economic issues related to the subprime loan crisis, inflation, and the possibility of recession tend to have less of a direct impact on the defense sector which derives much of its revenues from government budgets. While the sector may move in sympathy with the overall market at times, the underlying factors driving the defense industry remain quite different."

Cramer likes: The Gap (GPS), Kohl's (KSS), American Eagle (AEO). First, The Gap. Cramer: GPS's new CEO, balance sheet, and operational improvements have been largely ignored by a skeptical Wall Street. But GPS also has more than $2 billion in cash, and considerable fat has been cut. GPS is a great turnaround story in a sector that's turning. Buy GPS, but wait 5 days before purchasing. Next, Kohls (KSS). Cramer: Retail has been treated as one lump, but when the sector turn occurs, you don't want to play the whole sector, just the best: KSS. KSS is down 28% since April 2007 . And KSS was down $1.87 to $57.05 today [ Monday, August 27, 2007 ]: that's crazy. KSS is probably the best risk-reward stock in this market, other than the home builders. Catalysts: private label products, new brands, and a better inventory management system. Buy KSS, if you agree with me that the Fed will cut short-term interest rates. In the Lightning Round, Cramer was bullish on: Herbalife (HERB), U.S. Bancorp (USB), Freeport (FCX), Novartis (NVS), Cal-Maine (CALM), Kraft (KFT), Dell (DELL), which Cramer believes is going to $30 by the end of 2007; PepsiCo (PEP), Raytheon (RTN), Lockhead Martin (LMT), General Dynamics (GD), and American Standard (ASD). In the Lightning Round, Cramer was bearish on: Blackstone Group (BX), NutriSystem (NTRI), Sanofi (SNY), and CPI Corp. (CPY). Then, Cramer evaluated American Eagle Outfitters (AEO). Cramer: AEO's insiders are buying. And sources tell me that AEO's back to school season is going well, so far. I think it's time to start buying AEO, which I believe is going to bottom in the $22-$25 range. [Note: AEO closed Monday, August 27, 2007 at $25.20 .] In the Sudden Death Round, Cramer had the following recommendations - Buy: Hudson City Bancorp (HCBK). Sell: New York Bancorp (NYB).

PARSIPPANY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
DRS Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: DRS) announced today that it received a $26 million contract, with an option for an additional $23 million contract, to produce, integrate, test, and deliver Phalanx Thermal Imagers for the MK 15 Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS). The contract was awarded to DRS by the Missile Systems business of Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) in Louisville, Kentucky .
The imagers were developed by the company's DRS Sensors & Targeting Systems unit - California Division in Cypress, California , but the production work for this contract will be accomplished by the unit's Optronics Division in Palm Bay, Florida . DRS will start delivering the imagers immediately with completion expected by July 2008 .
The Phalanx CIWS is a shipboard defense weapon system currently deployed on every class of U.S. Navy combat ship, as well as on various international vessels. It is a fast-reaction, rapid-fire, 20-millimeter gun system that automatically detects, tracks, and engages incoming anti-ship missiles, aircraft and littoral warfare threats and is designed to be used at short ranges. It provides ships with a "last-chance" self-defense capability against these threats that have penetrated other fleet defense systems.
"Using the DRS-produced Phalanx Thermal Imager is a significant upgrade to the existing, first-generation Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) system currently incorporated into the Phalanx weapon system," said James M. Baird, president of DRS' Reconnaissance, Surveillance & Target Acquisition (RSTA) Business Segment. "This contract and program strengthens our relationship with Raytheon and the U.S. Navy, and our portfolio of thermal imaging products will now have a shipboard application in conjunction with the systems we provide to other branches of the U.S. military."
The Phalanx CIWS contains fully integrated radar and infrared surveillance capabilities for the automatic or manual acquisition and tracking of enemy threats. DRS' Phalanx Thermal Imagers incorporate the second generation FLIR technology similar to that used by the company in the Horizontal Technology Integration series of sighting system products, currently being produced and delivered to the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps for ground combat systems.
The RSTA business segment develops, manufactures and supports electro-optical technologies, including advanced cooled and uncooled thermal-imaging solutions for soldier systems, ground vehicle, airborne, and maritime as well as for industrial, security, public safety and firefighting applications.
