Depends on the volume, you would have to caculate it to how many shares is safe enough to buy around the average volume for you to be able to sell them all rather quickly if need it be.

My rule of thumb, if a swing trade position, only buy enough shares that allows you to exit within an hour if you need to. you never know when things can turn sour.

short term/long term = similar but for me, a days period time for me to get out at the latest.
