Ex-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev dead at 91: Russian media
By Jesse O’Neill August 30, 2022 4:46pm Updated
Mikhail Gorbachev has died at 91.
AP
Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who brought down the Iron Curtain, died at the age 91 following a long illness Tuesday, according to Russian state and independent media.
Gorbachev’s office said earlier that he was undergoing treatment at Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital. No other information about his death was immediately provided.
Gorbachev was the last leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the communist state formed in 1922 that controlled much of Eurasia. His seven-year tenure as Soviet president ended in humiliation and chaos but resulted in remarkable reforms that ended the Cold War in the early 90s.
After taking power in 1985, Gorbachev’s introduction of limited economic and political freedoms – including his “glasnost” policy of free speech – ultimately led to the USSR’s demise.
He refrained from using force to crush pro-democracy protests in the Soviet bloc nations in Eastern Europe two years prior to the Soviet Union’s fall. The protests ended with 15 republics demanding autonomy from the USSR.
His final hold of power was effectively taken away in an August 1991 coup, after which he watched from the sidelines as Soviet republics announced their independence.
By the time Gorbachev resigned as USSR leader on Christmas Day of 1991, the world’s largest country was already unraveling due to deepening economic woes and secessionist bids.
The resignation left the authoritarian former Soviet state in disarray, but ended decades of East-West nuclear confrontations. Gorbachev had brokered arms reduction deals with the US and Western partnerships that brought about the reunification of Germany.
Decades after the collapse, the USSR’s eighth and last leader said he did not use force to keep the communist bloc together over fears of a nuclear winter.
“The country was loaded to the brim with weapons. And it would have immediately pushed the country into a civil war,” Gorbachev said in 2016.
The fall of the USSR also marked the freedom of Eastern European nations that had long been under its authoritarian control, but sowed the erratic divisions and alliances that are currently being exploited in Russia’s current unprovoked war with Ukraine, the first bloody conflict on the European continent since World War II.
Moscow’s current ramped up authoritarianism and crackdown on free speech combined with escalating Western sanctions on Russia and a skyrocketing NATO presence has led international leaders to speak openly of a “new Cold War,” and led Gorbachev himself to believe that his life’s work had been undone by President Vladimir Putin.
“All Gorbachev’s reforms—to zero, to ashes, to smoke,” Alexei Venidiktov, told Forbes Russia in July after speaking with the ailing former president.
“Gorbachev died in a symbolic way when his life’s work, freedom, was effectively destroyed by Putin,” said Andrei Kolesnikov, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, referencing the war in Ukraine.
Gorbachev, the son of poor peasant farmers, grew up under the rule of Joseph Stalin in Russia’s rural Stavropol Krai territory, just north of Georgia. He received a law degree in Moscow and worked his way up through the ranks of the Communist Party, first as a proponent of de-Stalinization reforms.
His call for reform was accelerated by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster and in the next few years he withdrew from the Soviet-Afghan War – a Cold War proxy conflict – and met with President Ronald Regan to set up a blueprint for nuclear disarmament.
He will be remembered as one of the most consequential leaders of the last half of the 20th century.
“I see myself as a man who started the reforms that were necessary for the country and for Europe and the world,” Gorbachev said in 1992.
“I am often asked, would I have started it all again if I had to repeat it? Yes, indeed. And with more persistence and determination,” he said.
With the benefit of decades of hindsight, he said in 2018 he would reverse the collapse of the Soviet Union – which he once called the “greatest geopolitical catastrophe” – if he could.
Gorbachev won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his efforts to end the Cold War but was never forgiven by some Russians for the volatility that came with the sudden fall of the Soviet Union.
“He gave us all freedom – but we don’t know what to do with it,” liberal economist Ruslan Grinberg told the armed forces news outlet Zvezda after visiting the ailing former leader in the hospital earlier this summer.
“The era of Gorbachev is the era of perestroika, the era of hope, the era of our entry into a missile-free world … but there was one miscalculation: we did not know our country well,” said Vladimir Shevchenko, who headed Gorbachev’s protocol office when he was Soviet leader.
“Our union fell apart, that was a tragedy and his tragedy,” RIA news agency cited him as saying.
A Kremlin spokesperson said President Putin offered “his deepest condolences” to Gorbachev’s family.
“Tomorrow he will send a telegram of condolences to his family and friends,” Dmitry Peskov told Interfax news agency.
Gorbachev was set to be buried in Moscow’s Novodevichy Cemetery next to his wife Raisa, who died in 1999, according to Russian state media.

Virginia Patton Moss, last surviving adult actor in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ dead at 97
By Bob D'Angelo, Cox Media Group National Content Desk
August 21, 2022 at 4:53 pm EDT
Virginia Patton Moss, who was the final surviving adult cast member of the Christmas movie classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” died Thursday in Albany, Georgia, according to her obituary. She was 97.
Moss, a niece of Gen. George Patton, died at The Phoenix at Albany, an assisted living facility, Mathews Funeral Home announced.
Known by her maiden name during her acting career, Moss played Ruth Dakin Bailey, the sister-in-law of George Bailey, portrayed by James Stewart in the holiday film, Variety reported.
Karolyn Grimes, who was a child actor in the Frank Capra classic, posted a tribute to Moss on her personal Facebook page.
“We have another angel! Virginia Patton Moss. She was 97 years old,” Grimes wrote. “She is now with her beloved Cruse. She will be missed!”
Several of the child actors in “It’s a Wonderful Life,” including Grimes, are still alive.
Virginia Ann Patton was born in Cleveland on June 25, 1925, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She grew up in Portland, Oregon, and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1942.
After moving to Los Angeles, Moss signed with Warner Bros. and made her film debut in the 1943 movie, “Thank Your Lucky Stars,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Moss appeared in the film while she was a student at the University of Southern California, where she acted in plays, Variety reported.
She also appeared in “Janie” (1944), “Hollywood Canteen” (1944) and “The Horn Blows at Midnight” (1945), according to IMDb.com.
Moss’ big scene in “It’s a Wonderful Life” comes when her husband, Harry Bailey (Todd Karns) introduces her as his wife to George Bailey (Stewart) and Uncle Billy (Thomas Mitchell).
Because “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a Christmas staple, Moss once joked that, “I’ve probably been in more homes than even Santa Claus.”
Moss acted in four more films, including lead roles in the 1947 movie, “The Burning Cross,” and the 1948 western, “Black Eagle,” before retiring from acting, Variety reported. Her final screen credit was in the 1949 comedy, “The Lucky Stiff,” according to IMDb.com.
She married Cruse W. Moss in 1949, according to Variety; he died in 2018. The couple moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, and raised three children. Moss served as a docent at the University of Michigan Museum of Art.

Robert Brockman, software developer fighting billion-dollar tax evasion case dies
By Isabel Vincent August 6, 2022 1:49pm Updated
Robert Brockman was battling dementia.
A billionaire software developer who was fighting the biggest individual tax evasion case in US history died at his home in Houston Friday, according to reports.
Robert Brockman, 81, a self-taught software entrepreneur who developed a system that helped car dealers run their operations virtually, had been fighting IRS allegations of money laundering and tax evasion worth more than $2 billion since 2020.
Prosecutors said that Brockman, who had a personal net worth of $4.7 billion, owned an $8 million mansion in Houston, a Colorado ski cabin, a Bormbardier jet and a 209 foot yacht, named “Turmoil.”
Brockman suffered from dementia, and his attorneys had repeatedly argued that he wasn’t competent to stand trial, but a judge ruled in May that the trial would go forward. At a June hearing, the judge set the trial date for February 2023, with Brockman appearing at the hearing via video link from his bed.
Born in Florida, where his father ran a gas station and his mother worked as a physiotherapist, Brockman registered dozens of patents, and founded Reynolds & Reynolds, a software company that boasted more than 5,000 employees and was worth more than $5 billion, according to Bloomberg.
In Oct. 2020, federal prosecutors charged Brockman with using offshore companies, code names and burner phones to hide more than $2 billion of income from the IRS, most of it earned through Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm that he helped launch.

Mr. Russell and the Celtics are names that stick in my head.
He was a great man on and off the court.
So sad when we lose a man like him.
Too many people seem to be going lately.
It bothers me.
Don't you go, Red.
You're too young for that trip.

Lt. Uhura of 'Star Trek,' has died
'Star Trek' Star Nichelle Nichols Dead at 89
https://www.tmz.com/2022/07/31/nichelle-nichols-dead-dies-age-89-star-trek-uhura/
Nichelle Nichols, who famously played Lt. Uhura on 'Star Trek,' has died ... this according to her family.
Nichols' son, Kyle Johnson, confirmed the news on Sunday with an update posted to a website dedicated to the life and career of his mother ... writing, "I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years."
He adds, "Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light, however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration. Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all."
Kyle ends by saying this ... "I, and the rest of our family, would appreciate your patience and forbearance as we grieve her loss until we can recover sufficiently to speak further. Her services will be for family members and the closest of her friends and we request that her and our privacy be respected." He also sent a "Live long and prosper" shout out.
Nichols made history as the first African-American woman to play a lead role on television. And with "Star Trek: The Original Series" costar William Shatner ... she also shared the first on-screen kiss between a Black woman and white man on American television.
She played the role for a handful of years and starred in dozens of 'Star Trek' episodes between '66 and '69. However, her acting career went far beyond just the Galactic Barrier.
With 69 acting credits to her name, NN has appeared on several hit shows and movies over the years, including notable voice-over roles, such as ... 'The Lieutenant,' 'Peyton Place,' 'Tarzan,' 'Truck Turner,' 'The Supernaturals,' 'Batman: The Animated Series,' 'Gargoyles,' 'Spider-Man: The Animated Series,' 'Futurama,' 'Buzz Lightyear of Star Command,' 'The Simpsons,' 'Snow Dogs,' 'Are We There Yet?' 'Heroes,' 'The Young and the Restless,' and so many others.
Toward the end of her life, Nichols was in an often bitter conservatorship battle with her son -- this after he was granted control of the apparatus once she'd been diagnosed with dementia ... a legal fight that went on for some years, and, at times, got pretty ugly.
Nichelle Nichols was 89. RIP
Bill was one of my hero's as a young man. He was one of the smartest players, his defense was incredible and 8 NBA titles in a row for the Celtics. He was the first big man to know that being a man and blocking a shot up into the stands was not smart as the other team still got the ball. Leaving it in bounds his team had a 50% chance of a rebound.
Bill Russell, Celtics legend and NBA trailblazer, dead at 88
By Ethan Sears July 31, 2022 1:27pm Updated
(Rest in peace, Mr. Russell. More pictures at the link.)
The basketball community lost an all-time legend on Sunday as Bill Russell died at age 88, his family announced on Twitter.
Russell, who won a record 11 NBA titles with the Celtics, was a trailblazer as a black superstar in the 1950s and ’60s, and became the first black head coach of any North American professional team when the Celtics hired him in 1966 as a player-coach.
In a statement announcing his death, his family called Russell “the most prolific winner in American sports history.” By any measure, that is correct.
Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975 as a player and in 2021 as a coach, Russell won two NCAA titles at San Francisco, an Olympic gold medalist and two NBA titles as a coach, in addition to his 11 as a player.
Comprised of a core that included Russell at center along with fellow Hall of Famers Bob Cousy, Tommy Heinsohn, K.C. Jones, Bill Sharman and Sam Jones, the Celtics won a stunning 11 of 13 championships from 1956-1969. In 10 Game 7’s, Russell was undefeated in his career. Extended to any winner-take-all game — in NCAAs, Olympics and best-of-five playoff rounds — he was 21-0. The Finals MVP Award is named after him, and Russell was often on hand to give it out.

In addition to his basketball credentials, Russell was also a leader in the area of civil rights, enduring racist abuse throughout his career in Boston, where his home was once broken into and graffitied.
“From boycotting a 1961 exhibition game to unmask too-long tolerated discrimination, to leading Mississippi’s first integrated basketball camp in the combustible wake of Medgar Evans’ assassination, to decades of activism ultimately recognized by his receipt of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010, Bill called out injustice with an unforgiving candor that he intended would disrupt the status quo, and with a powerful example that, though never his humble intention, will forever inspire teamwork, selflessness and thoughtful change,” his family said in the statement. “Bill’s wife, Jeannine, and his many friends and family thank you for keeping Bill in your prayers. Perhaps you’ll relive one or two of the golden moments he gave us, or recall his trademark laugh as he delighted in explaining the real story behind how those moments unfolded. And we hope each of us can find a new way to act or speak up with Bill’s uncompromising, dignified and always constructive commitment to principle. That would be one last, and lasting, win for our beloved #6.”
Russell’s relationship with the city was complex — he didn’t attend his jersey retirement in 1972 and once described himself as “playing for the Celtics, not for Boston.” Eventually, in 1999, the team re-retired his number in a ceremony at which he attended.
“Bill Russell was the greatest champion in all of team sports,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “The countless accolades that he earned for his storied career with the Boston Celtics — including a record 11 championships and five MVP awards — only begin to tell the story of Bill’s immense impact on our league and broader society.
“Bill stood for something much bigger than sports: the values of equality, respect and inclusion that he stamped into the DNA of our league. At the height of ihs athletic career, Bill advocated vigorously for civil rights and social justice, a legacy he passed down to generations of NBA players who followed in his footsteps. Through the taunts, threats and unthinkable adversity, Bill rose above it all and remained true to his belief that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity.”
“… I often called him basketball’s Babe Ruth for how he transcended time. Bill was the ultimate winner and consummate teammate, and his influence on the NBA will be felt forever.”
Born in Monroe, Louisiana, Russell’s family moved to San Francisco, where he parlayed a spot on the McClymonds High School basketball team into a scholarship at San Francisco. Though Russell never averaged over 20 points in an NBA season, he is considered one of the greatest defensive players of all-time, with a 6-foot-9 frame that made him one of the greatest shot blockers ever, and a career average of 22.5 rebounds per game.
Later in life, he was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
Arrangements for his memorial service have yet to be announced.

‘Leave It to Beaver’ star Tony Dow dead at 77 after premature announcement
By Nika Shakhnazarova and Samantha Ibrahim July 27, 2022 3:33pm Updated
Tony Dow, best known for his role as big brother Wally in the classic TV sitcom “Leave It to Beaver” has died. He was 77.
“We have received confirmation from Christopher, Tony’s son, that Tony passed away earlier this morning, with his loving family at his side to see him through this journey,” an announcement read on Dow’s Facebook account Wednesday afternoon.
“We know that the world is collectively saddened by the loss of this incredible man. He gave so much to us all and was loved by so many. One fan said it best — ‘It is rare when there is a person who is so universally loved like Tony,’” the statement added.
His son Christopher called it “a very sad day” in the announcement.
“Although this is a very sad day, I have comfort and peace that he is in a better place. He was the best Dad anyone could ask for. He was my coach, my mentor, my voice of reason, my best friend, my best man in my wedding, and my hero,” he said in the heartfelt tribute. “My wife said something powerful and shows the kind of man he was. She said: ‘Tony was such a kind man. He had such a huge heart and I’ve never heard Tony say a bad or negative thing about anyone.’”
Dow’s death was prematurely announced on Tuesday after his wife, Lauren Shulkind, mistakenly notified the actor’s management team.
Dow’s manager said Shulkind, 75, was “very distraught” over the condition of her husband and believed he had been declared dead.
On Tuesday night, the actor’s son, Christopher Dow, shared an update on Facebook, saying his father was in hospice care and in “his last hours.”
The post came hours after the actor’s management team announced his death prematurely.
In a now-deleted post, the statement — from Frank Bilotta and Renee James — read, “It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share with you the passing of our beloved Tony this morning.
“Tony was a beautiful soul — kind, compassionate, funny and humble. It was truly a joy to just be around him. His gentle voice and unpretentious manner was immediately comforting and you could not help but love him. The world has lost an amazing human being, but we are all richer for the memories that he has left us.”
Dow and Shuklind announced in May that the “Still the Beaver” star was diagnosed with cancer, but did not reveal what kind.
“Dear friends and fans of Tony Dow, I have some very sad news to share with you,” Shulkind wrote at the time. “Unfortunately, Tony has once again been diagnosed with cancer. He is approaching this reality so bravely, but it is truly heartbreaking.
“We want to thank you in advance for your caring thoughts. Our Love, Lauren & Tony.”
The Hollywood native’s health issues first surfaced in August 2021 when he was briefly hospitalized with pneumonia and had a “violent cough.”
“Tony’s spirit is positive,” Shulkind wrote on Facebook last year. “He gets his daily exercise by walking the corridors with his his nurse. If he could only get rid of that darn cough. It’s going to take some time.”
“For the most part, members of his medical ‘team’ are compassionate, and we appreciate their efforts,” she added. “As well, we appreciate all of you for your thoughts and concerns. Hopefully Tony will be home soon. Poppy can’t wait to get her daddy back.”
Mathers had previously been in contact with Dow and his management team and had frequently updated fans about Dow’s condition over social media.
Dow starred as Wally, the older brother of Beaver (Mathers), in “Leave It to Beaver” from 1957 to 1963 for six seasons.
He later reprised his role in the sitcom sequel, “The New Leave It to Beaver,” in 1983. The show aired for four seasons until 1989.
Dow went on to guest-star on shows like “My Three Sons,” “Dr. Kildare,” “Lassie” and “The Greatest Show on Earth,” before taking on a recurring role on “Mr. Novak.”
He also got behind the camera, having directed episodes of TV shows like “Coach,” “Babylon 5” and “Harry and the Hendersons.”
In 1965, he took a break from acting to serve in the National Guard for three years. He even tried his hand at writing and entered journalism school in the 1970s.
Dow spoke to CBS This Morning earlier this year about his iconic role on “Leave It to Beaver” and how being a child star allowed him to not be independent.
“From the time I was 11 or 12, I was told what to do. I was told on the set. I was told at home. I didn’t have control of my life,” he said.
While the role of Wally defined it, he didn’t want to be in the public eye and he fame that came with it. “I was gonna have to live with it for the rest of my life,” Dow noted. “It’s sad to be famous at 12 years old or something, and then you grow up and become a real person, and nothing’s happening for you.”
In the 1980s, he took on roles in the projects “Knight Rider,” “Square Pegs” and “Murder, She Wrote.”
The ’90s saw the filmmaker take some time behind the camera. He did some directing work on episodes for series such as “Babylon 5” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.”

Paul Sorvino, ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Law & Order’ actor, dead at 83
By Erin Keller and Samantha Ibrahim July 25, 2022 2:30pm Updated
(More pictures at the link. I enjoyed his work on L&O. Didn't see any of the "mafioso" films. I'm not a fan of that "culture.")
Actor Paul Sorvino, best known for his starring role as Paul Cicero in “Goodfellas” and the father of Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino, has died. He was 83.
His wife, Dee Dee, was by his side in Indiana Monday morning when he passed away from natural causes.
“Our hearts are broken, there will never be another Paul Sorvino, he was the love of my life, and one of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen and stage,” she said in a statement.
“My father the great Paul Sorvino has passed,” 54-year-old Mira tweeted Monday. “My heart is rent asunder- a life of love and joy and wisdom with him is over. He was the most wonderful father. I love him so much. I’m sending you love in the stars Dad as you ascend.”
The Post has reached out to reps for Sorvino for comment.
With more than 100 acting credits to his name, Sorvino had a knack for playing gangsters and cops, notably in Martin Scorsese’s 1990 hit “Goodfellas” and NYPD sergeant Phil Cerreta on Seasons 2 and 3 of “Law & Order.”
He also appeared in the 1995 movie “Nixon” as Henry Kissinger and as Fulgencio Capulet in 1996’s “Romeo + Juliet.
He played an Italian-American communist in Warren Beatty’s “Reds,” Henry Kissinger in Oliver Stone’s “Nixon” and mob boss Eddie Valentine in “The Rocketeer.”
Born in Brooklyn in 1939, Cicero attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York where he fell in love with theater. He made his Broadway debut in 1964 in “Bajour,” and booked his first movie, “Where’s Poppa?” in 1970.
He told The Post in 2002 that Martin Luther King, Desmond Tutu, Muhammad Ali were his heroes.
“Self-sacrifice, risking their lives for what they believed in — they are true citizens of Planet Earth,” he said.
Christopher Serrone, who played young Henry Hill at the beginning of “Goodfellas,” told The Post in 2020 for the movie’s 30th anniversary that Sorvino would sing opera between takes.
Of his career-making role in “Goodfellas,” Sorvino once recalled how he felt typecast.
“There are many people who think I’m actually a gangster or a mafioso, largely because of ‘Goodfellas,’” he once said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I suppose that’s the price you pay for being effective in a role.”
He had three children from his first marriage to Lorraine Davis, including Academy Award-winning actress Mira Sorvino. He also directed and starred in a film written by his daughter, Amanda, and featuring his son, Michael.
Sorvino was also a staunch opponent of disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein, who allegedly was accused of blacklisting Mira after she refused his sexual advances.
“If I meet him on the street, he oughta hope that he goes to jail,” Sorvino told TMZ in 2018. “Because if we come across [one another], I think he’ll be lying on the floor somehow, magically. He’s gonna go to jail. That son of a bitch, good for him if he goes, because if not, then he has to meet me, and I’ll kill that motherf—ker.”
He claimed at the time he only learned about the sexual harassment and assault and blacklisting allegations against the “Shakespeare in Love” filmmaker when the public did, stating, “If I had known it, he would not be walking. He’d be in a wheelchair.”
“My daughter is a wonderful person,” he said at the time. “A courageous and wonderful human being and doesn’t deserve to have been treated that way by this pig. This pig will get his comeuppance. The law will get him. He’s going to go to jail and die in jail. But if he doesn’t … I’ll just slap him around. I won’t do anything terrible.”
The “Mighty Aphrodite” star famously thanked her dad in her 1996 Oscar speech, when she won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the Woody Allen film.
“When you give me this award, you honor my father, Paul Sorvino, who has taught me everything he knows about acting,” she said during her speech, which brought him to happy tears.
A 2015 New York Times article on the 25th anniversary of “Goodfellas” noted how Sorvino revealed he was so happy to get the part.
“I’d done a lot of comedies as well as dramas, but I’d never done a really tough guy. I never had it in me,” he said. “And this [part] called for a lethality, which I felt was way beyond me. I called my manager three days before we started shooting and said, ‘Get me out. I’m going to ruin this great man’s picture, and I’m going to ruin myself.’ He, being wise, said, ‘Call me tomorrow, and if necessary I will get you out.’
“Then I was going by the hall mirror to adjust my tie,” he added. “I was just inconsolable. And I looked in the mirror and literally jumped back a foot. I saw a look I’d never seen, something in my eyes that alarmed me. A deadly soulless look in my eyes that scared me and was overwhelmingly threatening. And I looked to the heavens and said, ‘You’ve found it,'”

‘America’s Got Talent,’ ‘The Voice’ alum Nolan Neal dead at 41
By Eileen ReslenJuly 19, 2022 | 12:06pm
Singer Nolan Neal died in Nashville Monday after battling with substance abuse for years.NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via
Singer Nolan Neal, who competed on both “America’s Got Talent” and “The Voice,” has died at age 41, Page Six can confirm.
The medical examiner’s office in Nashville told us the crooner passed away in Music City on Monday, but a cause of death was not disclosed.
TMZ was first to report the news of Neal’s death.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department also confirmed to Page Six that cops received a call of a “deceased person” at approximately 8:17 p.m. local time July 18, who was later identified as Nolan Neal Seals.
“Mr. Seals was located in the bedroom of the downstairs apartment by the upstairs roommate,” the public information officer added.
“The roommate stated she discovered the victim after receiving a phone call from the victim’s mother who was concerned after not hearing from him.”
According to police, the unnamed roommate said she last saw Seals alive around 4 or 5 p.m. Sunday.
“On the desk next to the bed was a black guitar pick that appeared to contain a powder residue,” the officer added. “The victim reportedly struggled with substance abuse.”
The medical coroner’s office told Page Six it can take a minimum of eight weeks for an official autopsy report to come in.
The public information officer said narcotics detectives joined other detectives from the police department at the scene and are assisting in the investigation.
Seals previously opened up about about his history with substance abuse in an interview with a local Nashville NBC news program.
“I remember I got clean in 2010; May 15, went to rehab. Stayed clean,” he told WBIR in July 2020. “I joined the rock band Hinder, they were all about drinking and partying.”
Seals said his drinking habits were “not” the band’s fault, because he had made the decision to “drink like a normal person” on his own.
“I remember trying to be normal and fitting in,” he added. “I remember going to a bar and ordering a drink. I tried to hide it. I remember pretending to be normal. I was just lying to myself telling myself that I could control it.”
After leaving Hinder, Seals tried out for “The Voice,” but did not make it the first time, according to WBIR. However, he tried out a second time under the name Nolan Neal for Season 10 and made it to the knockout rounds of the singing competition show.
Seals then auditioned for Season 15 of “America’s Got Talent” in 2020, where he performed an original song called “Lost” and got a standing ovation from the crowd and all of the judges.
Reps at NBC, the network behind both “AGT” and “The Voice,” did not immediately return Page Six’s request for comment on Seals’ death.

Westminster PD previously identified the suspect in East’s killing as Trent William Millsap, 27, who they described as a “transient and known to frequent Westminster, Garden Groce and Anaheim motels.”
Millsap was killed Friday when a SWAT team was serving a search warrant and shots rang out, police said.
“No officers were injured; however, a police K-9 sustained a single gunshot wound that was not life threatening.”
Photos of Millsap showed him covered with tattoos on his head, face, neck, chest, arms and hands. Police had said he was considered “armed and dangerous.”
Trent William Millsap had been identified as a suspect in the case.

You're ahead of me: ‘Sopranos’ actor Tony Sirico dead at 79
By Erin Keller and Eric Hegedus July 8, 2022 7:21pm Updated
Tony Sirico died Friday at age 79, according to his brother's Facebook post. The actor co-starred opposite James Gandolfini in the HBO series "The Sopranos."
JOY E SCHELLER-LONDON FEATURES
Actor Tony Sirico — best known for his role as mobster Paulie Walnuts on “The Sopranos” — is dead, his brother, Robert, announced on Facebook on Friday. He was 79.
?”It is with great sadness, but with incredible pride, love and a whole lot of fond memories, that the family of Gennaro Anthony ‘Tony’ Sirico wishes to inform you of his death on the morning of July 8, 2022,” wrote Robert, who is a priest.
“Tony is survived by his two beloved children, Joanne Sirico Bello and Richard Sirico, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews and many other relatives.
“The family is deeply grateful for the many expressions of love, prayer and condolences and requests that the public respect its privacy in this time of bereavement.”
His “Sopranos” co-star Michael Imperioli — who played Christopher Moltisanti, protégé to Tony Soprano, portrayed by the late James Gandolfini — also posted a remembrance on Instagram, saying in part: “Tony was like no one else: he was as tough, as loyal and as big hearted as anyone i’ve ever known.”
Another co-star, Steven Van Zandt, who played tough guy Silvio Dante, tweeted his condolences to the actor’s family.
“A larger-than-life character on and off-screen. Gonna miss you a lot my friend,” he wrote.
Their “heartbroken” co-star Jamie Lynn Sigler also posted to social media about the special bond she felt for her colleague and friend.
“I loved you so much. I have never been able to walk into a room that you were in without you giving me an enormous hug, drenching me in your cologne, and making sure I knew any man that came near me would have to answer to you first,” she wrote, sharing a photo of them together.
Sources told TMZ that he had been living in an assisted living home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for a few years due his declining health.
The Post has reached out to Sirico’s representatives for confirmation.
When he was 55, Sirico was sleeping on a cot in his mother’s living room in Brooklyn when he was cast as Walnuts. He originally auditioned for the role of Uncle Junior — who would be played by Dominic Chianese.
Sirico and Walnuts’ lives had many parallels. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 29, 1942, the late actor was just 7 years old the first time he got arrested for stealing nickels from a newspaper stand. He would be arrested 28 more times and would and two trips to the slammer.
In 1971, he even spent 20 months at the notorious Sing Sing prison for felony weapons possession.
“The first time I went away to prison, they searched me to see if I had a gun — and I had three of ’em on me,” he told the LA Times in 1990.
“In our neighborhood, if you weren’t carrying a gun, it was like you were the rabbit during rabbit-hunting season.”
The hit HBO crime drama ran from 1999 to 2007. He won two Screen Actors Guild Awards for his ensemble role: one in 2000 and another in 2008.
In a 2020 interview, Sirico praised his former “Sopranos” co-star Gandolfini, who died in 2013 at age 51, calling the actor his “right f–king arm” and saying he was “so f–king happy to be as close” as the two were.
In his decades-long career, Sirico appeared in numerous guest roles on other shows including “Kojak,” “Miami Vice,” “Chuck,” “Medium,” “Lilyhammer” and “American Dad.”
Sirico played gangsters in over a dozen movies, including “Goodfellas,” “Mob Queen,” “Mighty Aphrodite” and “Gotti.”
“I make a pretty good living because I die well. I get hired to get killed,” he once told the LA Times, estimating that he died in 13 of his then-27 films.
Additionally, he temporarily lent his voice to “Family Guy” character Vinny Griffin — who was the family’s dog for three episodes in 2013.
Sirico and former “Sopranos” actors Federico Castelluccio and Vincent Pastore reunited in the 2018 film “Sarah Q.”
His brother’s posting asked that memorial donations be made in his honor to Wounded Warriors, St. Jude’s Hospital and the Acton Institute.

We lost Agarn! Larry Storch, ‘F Troop’ star, dead at 99
By Ben Cost July 8, 2022 12:55pm Updated
“F Troop” star Larry Storch has died at 99.
Disney General Entertainment Con
Larry Storch, a character actor most famous for starring in the 1960s sitcom “F Troop,” died on Friday at age 99. His death was confirmed on his official Facebook page, although the cause of death wasn’t disclosed.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share with you the news our beloved Larry passed away in his sleep overnight,” the tribute read. “We are shocked and at a loss for words at the moment. Please remember he loved each and every one of you and wouldn’t want you to cry over his passing.
“He is reunited with his wife Norma and his beloved ‘F Troop’ cast and so many friends and family,” the post added.
Born Jan. 8, 1923, in New York City, Storch was perhaps best known for his role in ABC’s short-lived Civil War sitcom “F Troop,” in which he portrayed Corporal Randolph Agarn, the dimwitted sidekick of Sergeant O’Rourke (played by Forrest Tucker).
As part of their signature bit, Storch’s usually bumbling Agarn would make an uncharacteristically keen observation, whereupon O’Rouke (Tucker) would exclaim, “Agarn, I don’t know why everybody says you’re so dumb.” Then, much later in the next scene, his indignant lackey would respond, “Who says I’m dumb?”
The comedy star also played several of Agarn’s relatives in the series, which lasted just two seasons from 1965-67.
However, Storch also had many other guest spots during his more than 60-year small-screen career. Notable projects included roles in classic shows such as “I Dream of Jeannie,” “Get Smart,” “Gomer Pyle: USMC,” “The Greatest Show on Earth,” “Love, American Style,” “The Love Boat” and more.

The comedic actor was renowned for his distinctive Bronx accent, which he lent to numerous cartoons including “Koko the Clown” and “Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo.” He additionally voiced Mr. Whoopee in the popular mid-1960s animated series “Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales.”
Along with his small-screen career, Storch also racked up multiple Broadway credits, including “Porgy and Bess” (1983), “Arsenic and Old Lace” (1986), “Annie Get Your Gun” (1999) and, in 2004, “Sly Fox” with Richard Dreyfuss and Irwin Corey.

James Caan, ‘The Godfather,’ ‘Elf’ and ‘Misery’ star, dead at 82
By Nadine DeNinno and Eric Hegedus July 7, 2022 1:15pm Updated
(Lots of pictures at the link below.)
James Caan, the Bronx-born, Queens-raised actor who starred in “The Godfather,” “Elf,” “Brian’s Song,” “El Dorado” and “Misery,” among countless other films, has died. He was 82.
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time,” a statement on his official Twitter account read.
No cause of death was immediately given.
Caan, who was best known for playing Santino “Sonny” Corleone, the brother to Al Pacino’s Michael, reflected on the iconic Francis Ford Coppola film for its 50th anniversary earlier this year.
“One of the things that made ‘The Godfather’ successful, besides brilliant directing and writing and wonderful actors … was that everyone really enjoyed making it, and that comes off on the screen,” Caan told The Post in March 2022. “And I think the audience can tell that we were having a good time doing what we were doing up there.”
Caan, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the movie based on the Mario Puzo book, also called his co-star Marlon Brando, who played family patriarch Don Vito Corleone, “great” and suggested he had a significant sense of humor.
“Marlon was great,” Caan said of Brando. “He had a great sense of humor, but he would have trouble figuring out the f—ing punch line sometimes. We’d go to lunch — those stupid Polish jokes were coming out at the time … and then two hours later, in the middle of a scene, I’d look at him and say something and all the sudden [imitates Brando laughing] I’d say, ‘What the f–k’s the matter with you?’ and he said [referring to the joke], ‘That’s funny.’ Two hours later it was playing in his f—ing head. He was like a child like that. I loved him.”
Perhaps his NYC upbringing helped him play a hardened mafioso, since it’s all about “loyalty,” as he once said.
“I really believe that you grow up a certain way in New York. There’s a New York morality, a sense of loyalty,” he said of growing up in NYC. “You know how to win and lose. There are a thousand kids outside; you know who to push and who not to push. There’s a sixth sense you develop just because it’s New York.”
As for Caan, acting wasn’t always his dream growing up as the son of a butcher. While attending Hofstra University, Caan played football and aspired to be a professional player. But Hofstra was where he ended up falling in love with acting, after joining the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre.
His first credit was on Broadway in the 1961 production of “Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole,” followed by minor film and TV roles.
His first leading role was in 1965 in Howard Hawks’ “Red Line 7000,” followed by a star-making turn in the 1966 Western “El Dorado” opposite John Wayne and Robert Mitchum.
He was eventually led to “The Godfather” after starring in the 1969 film “The Rain People,” directed by Coppola, who later cast him in the iconic mob picture.
In the interview with The Post, timed to the 50th anniversary of “The Godfather,” Caan reminisced about numerous scenes — including a key improvised segment in which Sonny beats up his pregnant sister’s husband, Carlo (Gianni Russo), on the street with his fists, his feet and the top of a garbage can.
“The stick I threw at [Carlo] when he’s running away, that wasn’t in the script,” he said. “I took one of those industrial brooms and cut the end off and put it under my seat [in the car as Sonny drives up to confront Carlo]. They said, ‘It’s not in the script’ and I said, ‘What the f–k’s the difference, just put it down there.’ I swear to God I had no idea what I was going to do with it, but I knew that’s what a lot of guys did in my neighborhood. We called them ‘attitude adjusters.’ I just grabbed it and fired [the stick] at him and Francis said, ‘That’s great, Jimmy, you looked like you were going to miss him.’ So he’s lying behind the cars on the other side and luckily, on the upswing, I caught him on the top of the coconut.”
Regarding his character Sonny’s big, bloody death scene, Caan told The Post earlier this year that it was a dangerous sequence to film.
“I would never have shot that scene under any other conditions — but there were girls on the set, and I couldn’t look like a p—y,” Caan said. “That’s the only reason I did it. There were 147 squibs on my body … Those squibs were made like brass caskets, a square inch of brass with a little V on top where they pour gunpowder and they were sewn into my jacket. The effects guy, AD Flowers, said, ‘I don’t know if I ever put this many squibs on anybody, ever.’”
As for “The Godfather” as a whole, he said the film is sincere — but also revealed he was gunning for Pacino’s part.
“Yeah, I had a number of auditions for different parts,” he told Variety. “I wanted to play Sonny, because that’s what Francis wanted. But he called me one night from New York and said, ‘Jimmy, the studio wants you to come here and test.’ I said, ‘Test what? You got a Porsche you want me to drive around the block?’ And Francis told me they wanted me to play Michael. So I went to New York and read for the role and then they had Al [Pacino] come in and test and he was a little self-destructive. They warned him, ‘Don’t do that again or you’re fired.’ But Francis got what he wanted in the end. He always does.”
He also said working with the film’s cast was as legendary as the movie, which is beloved by fans decades on.
“There’s something that doesn’t get dated and that’s the truth,” he said. “‘The Godfather’ has a lot of truth to it, a lot of sincerity to it and a lot of art. The cast was great and we all had a lot of fun making it. Having fun and liking the people you’re working with is a very important ingredient, which I found out after 130 movies or whatever.”
Caan also said the scene in which Sonny is brutally taken out was done in just one take.
“F–k yeah,” he said. “Once was enough.”
He also added that the squibs, or miniature explosive devices, “would blow a hole in you.”
“It was very scary. I had 147 squibs on me and there were 5,000 in the tollbooth and the truth is that I only did it because there were girls on the set. I remember [special effects head] A.D. Flowers putting these wires on me, and as he’s putting them on me he’s mumbling to himself about how he never put this many squibs on somebody in his life. I told him, ‘Shut the f–k up, A.D., will ya, for God’s sake?’ Thankfully we only did it once.”
While Caan played a tough guy in “The Godfather,” the actor said the exact opposite for “Misery,” alongside Kathy Bates.
“I play a total victim. I get the crap beat out of me. And I look like I’m between 80 and death,” he proudly told the Los Angeles Times in 1990 of his memorable role in the thriller.
“I sometimes wondered if this was a sadistic joke on Rob’s part,” he said of director Rob Reiner’s take on the adaptation of Stephen King’s work. In the film, Caan plays an injured, bedridden author who is held hostage by an infatuated fan, played by Bates. “You know, ‘Let’s get the most hyper guy in Hollywood to stay in bed for 15 weeks.’ . . . I was doing something I’d never done. For me, this being a totally reactionary character is really much tougher.”
Despite the tough guy visage in “Godfather,” Caan also took on comedy, starring as Will Ferrell’s long-lost biological dad in “Elf.” While fans have clamored for a sequel to the beloved Christmas flick, Caan said it never happened over a dispute between Ferrell and director Jon Favreau.
“We were gonna do it and I thought, ‘Oh my god, I finally got a franchise movie, I could make some money, let my kids do what the hell they want to do.’ And the director and Will didn’t get along very well,” Caan told the Bull & Fox radio show in 2020. “So, Will wanted to do it, he didn’t want the director, and he had it in his contract, it was one of those things.”
Caan had five children, “Ocean’s 11” star Scott Caan, 45; James Arthur Caan, 26; Tara A. Caan, 57; Jacob Nicholas Caan, 23; and Alexander James Caan, 31.
“My dad is probably one of the most interesting people I’ve ever met,” Scott told The Fall magazine in 2017. “When you’re young, you don’t see your father as a legend, you just know that he’s an interesting, colorful, wild kinda cat and you think, ‘I want to be like that guy.’ If you come from creative people, it’s just in you.”

TO ALL:
It is with deep and sincere regret that I report this:
One of our long time IHUB NASCAR board posters and contest member lost his wife a few weeks ago. I just found out last evening. His IHUB and TalkZilla handle is iamshazzam. (Jim)
Jim has given me permission to share the PM he sent me last night:

Thanks Phil. Sad news - I lost my wife of 45 years three weeks ago. Am still in a state of shock and absolutely lost. I'll keep coming here because I feel like I'm among friends. Thanks for the invite and kindness. If you're interested in Laverne's Memorial, just visit http://dignity.mem.com/Story.aspx?ID=2679224 and feel free to leave a comment in the guest book if you want. I know Pete might like to see it too so let him know if you will. We had many many wonderful years together and I have been a very Blessed man for having had her as my lifelong companion and friend.
Again, thanks for the friendship and I'll jump in here often. Time will certainly help but will never erase the great memories.
Your friend, Jim
I'm going to post this message on our memorial board here, and I also started a TalkZilla board in her honor. Please offer your condolences to Jim.

From one of his Posts/Sayings >
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well-preserved
body,
but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn-out, shouting,
'Holy shit! What a ride!'
Screw the doctors - I'm back riding my Harley. Screw the economy, I'm living
it up.

Jim------Just wanted to let you know that I lost my best friend early Thursday a.m. He had really began to weaken due to the tumors and the chemo. He was here at home with me and died peacefully. I can truthfully say that he was ready to meet His Maker which he did. I am truly blessed to know that today he is in a much better place with no pain and sorrow. You can let his chat board friends aware of his death if you wish. I just know he truly knew you and Carol were praying for him daily. Stay in touch. Amy

Notice of the passing of valleytopdog on Friday May 21, 2010
I am the brother of John (valleytopdog) who wanted me to inform this board of his passing. Some of you, I believe, met with him personally. He wanted to let you know how much he enjoyed the many exchanges that he had with many of you on this board. He was a very big believer in the NanoViricides technology and was looking for it to be commercialized during his lifetime. He had a very aggressive form of lung cancer that took him in less than a month. We got him on DCA that began to help, but it was brought too late to the battle to benefit him.
Peace
Robert
