THE COMPANY WAS KILLED. DESCANSOS: How To Protect Our Loved Ones? However unpleasant we must create a disaster plan. True Story: - Imagine This Headline White Caucasian male, dies from heart attack but not before being in coma for 2 days without gaining consiousness. Family & Community left in shock from unexpected event leaving wife & 2 children with NO contingency plan, NO health insurance, NO Life Insurance, NO Will, NO Living Will and NO Medical Directive. We've all heard similiar stories and seen highway memorials but never pay attention until it hits home. The first time I heard the term descansos was in 1992 when a medical doctor suggested I read a book on the subject. As the doctor explained it was much better to prepare one’s life prior to a disaster. Its never fun preparing for such a tragedy which hopefully will never occur. Descansos can be extended to include: • Being Fired from a Job • Divorse • Child Loss • Moving • Institutionalizing Parents in Nursing Homes • Disconnecting from Family Member's & Loved One's • Death of a stock - Why Not? http://webpages.charter.net/dnance/descansos/index.htm DESCANSOS ROADSIDE MEMORIALS ON THE AMERICAN HIGHWAY "We say that the hour of death is uncertain, but when we say this we think of that hour as situated in an obscure and distant future. It does not occur to us that it can have any connection with the day already begun or that death could arrive this same afternoon, this afternoon which is so certain and which has every hour filled in advance". Marcel Proust, In Search Of Lost Time, Vol III -?The Guermantes Way, Part Two : Chapter One http://webpages.charter.net/dnance/descansos/index.htm               Descansos - A Tribute of Love                                        John Rodriguez                                       Folklore Student A Descanso is a Spanish word meaning rest or resting place. This word today is used to describe the memorial marker found along most high ways in the US. A Descanso is usually erected at the site of tragic accident in which some ones life was cut short. Where do Descansos come from? It is not known where the ritual of erecting a cross where some one has died really comes from. There is documented evidence of Descansos being erected in Greece, Egypt, Germany and Australia. Mexico and the US also have a high percentage of Descansos along the mostly rural highways and interstates. The practice of placing a cross may come from the crusades in Old Europe, where soldiers who died on the march were buried and had a simple cross to mark to site of his/her death In the Americas, the practice probably came over with the Spanish conquistadors who cris-crossed the Southwest US in search of the fabled cities of gold. As the soldiers were killed or died due to exposure they were quickly buried and a cross set to mark the spot where the body lay. http://www.utpa.edu/dept/lrgvarchive/Descansos.htm Descansos, Roadside Memorials & Crosses: Descansos are the roadside crosses and other roadside memorials built at the sites of fatal traffic accidents. The families and friends of accident victims construct descansos as a memorial for their lost loved ones. The name descanso comes from the Spanish word for resting. Also known as crucitas or memorias, the practice comes from ancient Spanish tradition of placing stones where pallbearers rested between the church and the cemetery. Later the stones were replaced with crosses. When the Spanish came to the New World and comrades died on the trail markers where left at the site. This is one thing that distinguishes descansos from gravestones: descansos mark the place of death, not the place of burial. Today descansos are usually built around a cross and include elements like flowers (real or artificial), candles, and the deceased's personal relics. They are maintained by friends and relatives, sometimes for years after the person's death. They are often visited and freshened on the annivarsary of the accident, the victim's birthday, or holidays like Christmas or Halloween. Descansos vary by region and ethnicity. They are more rural than urban, more common on the West Coast than the East Coast, and more Hispanic than Anglo. Another rule of thumb I've noticed is that they tend to neighborhood customs. By this I mean that if you find one somewhere you'll probably find others nearby. This is because descansos are public displays of private grief. One can only image that this was the singular most significant event in the survivors' lives. They are meant to be seen. Those who see them on a regular basis probably have ties to the victim: family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. Descansos are socially acceptable behavior for a given locale. http://www.jetcityorange.com/photos/descansos/ Googled Descansos - 10 Links show up: http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=descansos&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 Books on Descansos: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=blended&field-keywords=descansos&results-process=default&dispatch=search/ref=pd_sl_aw_tops-1_blended_36380616_2&results-process=default Roadside Memorials: There have been roadside memorials for more than a thousand years. Eleanor crosses in England, for example, were erected in 1290 along the route of the Queen's funeral procession, though these, of course, were not intended to mark a death place. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roadside_memorial Posted: September 29, 2007 Misc. Note: I had a friend ask me the other day what I did all day. I told him I was a stock trader. Then he wanted to know my batting average? I said I had 5 stocks I would eventually write off against gains when the time was right. Silence. Afterwards, I figured up how many loser's I've had. I've done between 90 to 100 trades in the last 4 years. I was satisfied with those averages. My answer was, I'd write them off just like a bad real estate deal. Again Silence. Instead of abandoning this board completely, I figure why not use it as a Grave Yard for Dead Stocks. If you'd like to do that with me, be my guest. Once they are put here, we can forget about them and put them to rest. I am leaving the site as it was prior to its death.
