Can't believe how quiet this board is. Earnings due tomorrow. I think LDK has been in a bad spot due to the recessions all over the world. If companies had more money they would be putting up solar farms on the roof tops of their buildings to harness the sun power.

LDK Solar Reports Partial Nonpayment For Convertible Notes - Quick Facts

(RTTNews.com) - LDK Solar Co., Ltd. ( LDK ), vertically integrated manufacturer of photovoltaic products, announced that, due to a temporary cash-flow shortage, it was not able to make full payments to the holders of its 4.75% convertible senior notes due 2013 in an aggregate principal amount of US$23.79 million, plus interest, otherwise due and payable on their maturity date of April 15, 2013.

However, the company said it has privately and individually negotiated with two holders of such convertible notes in the aggregate principal amount of US$16.55 million, and reached settlement with them, shortly before the maturity date, through a partial payment in cash and effectively a loan facility to postpone the repayment of the remaining indebtedness.

The company noted that it had informed The Bank of New York Mellon, as trustee for the holders of the convertible notes, of such nonpayment.

The company said it is nevertheless ready and willing to discuss and reach a settlement for the remaining convertible notes.

LDK Solar Receives $69M Financing for Mahong Plant

Jan 31 (Reuters) - LDK Solar Co Ltd said China Development Bank Corp approved a 440 million yuan ($69.8 million) loan, as the country's state-run banks continue to extend credit to its solar companies.
The loan will be used to finance LDK's investment in hydrochlorination technology for the Mahong Polysilicon Plant, in which U.S.-listed LDK Solar has invested more than 12 billion yuan to date.
Beijing has already provided billions of dollars in credit lines and other support to its solar industry through state-run banks, prompting the U.S. government to impose import duties.
LDK Solar plans to draw down on the loan as market conditions improve and the necessary equipment is ready for its use, the company said in a statement. ($1 = 6.2204 Chinese yuan)

LDK replaced CEO

LDK Solar Co. (LDK), the second-biggest maker of solar wafers, replaced its chief executive officer and hired five other board members including a provincial People’s Congress official. The company’s American depository receipts climbed before erasing their gains.

Chief Operating Officer Tong Xingxue takes over immediately as CEO from Peng Xiaofeng, who stays as chairman, LDK said today in a statement. The other new board members include independent directors Wang Ceng, who has served as a financial consultant for Xinyu city government, and Wu Shian, a member of the Standing Committee of the People’s Congress of Jiangxi.

Peng will stay to guide “LDK Solar’s strategic direction and developing partners and other key relationships,” the company said.

The solar market globally is continuing to grow, and a new report says it will have a compound growth rate of 18.5 percent through 2020.
ASDReports found the industry has grown from 7.3 gigawatts of installations in 2006 to more than 71.3 gigawatts in 2011, for a 57.3 percent annual growth rate.
Total installs will be at nearly 330 gigawatts by 2020, the study says.
That’s potentially good news for a solar industry that is flagging because of overproduction. Companies such as Tempe-based First Solar Inc. and Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. have cut back on production — and workers — as demand hasn’t caught up with available production.
Phoenix and Arizona are at the epicenter of U.S. solar growth, with hundreds of gigawatts of power production planned between this state and California.
The study released this week also looked at where countries stand now and which are the largest markets. Italy and Germany topped the list for 2011, but both countries have scaled back incentive programs that were a boon to the solar industry. Combined, the two countries made up a little over 50 percent of the installation market.
The U.S. was third in installations, making up 6.3 percent of the market, followed by China, France, Japan and Australia.

Solar Market to Rise 22 Percent in 2013, Deutsche Bank Predicts

The global solar market will rise 22 percent to 33.4 gigawatts in 2013, with gains in China, the U.S. and India more than offsetting declines in Germany and Italy, Deutsche Bank predicted today in a note to investors.

The Chinese market, the second biggest in 2012, will more than double to 10 gigawatts this year from 4 gigawatts last year, Deutsche said. The Indian market will more than triple to 4 gigawatts and the U.S. will rise 29 percent to 4.5 gigawatts, the bank’s analysts, led by Vishal Shah, predicted in the note.

Those gains will help offset declines in European markets, led by Germany and Italy, where demand will be cut in half, according to the bank. Those two countries were the biggest and third-largest markets in 2012, it said.

Solars Drive Steepest Jump in 3 Months: China Overnight

Chinese stocks climbed a fifth week in New York, rallying the most since September, as manufacturing data added to signs the economy is recovering and as the U.S. budget deal boosted China’s second-largest trading partner.
The Bloomberg China-US Equity Index (CH55BN) of the most-traded Chinese shares in the U.S. jumped 5.1 percent last week to 101.71, capping the longest stretch of weekly gains in 11 months. LDK Solar Co. (LDK) surged 59 percent in the week, and Suntech (STP) Power Holdings Co. soared 34 percent, as China took more measures to lift solar energy demand. Web game developer Giant Interactive Group Inc. (GA) rallied 20 percent to a 16-month high, while Ambow Education Holding Ltd. (AMBO) sank 7.1 percent.

Data last week showing manufacturing expanded for a third month in December compounded evidence the economy is emerging from its slowdown, while legislation to avert U.S. spending cuts and tax increases burnished the outlook for China’s exports. Asia’s largest economy is poised to grow 8.1 percent this year, from 7.7 percent in 2012, according to the median estimates of 49 economists surveyed last month by Bloomberg.
“China’s economy will definitely rebound this year, and I would expect Chinese equities to do better,” Stephen Leeb, chairman of Leeb Capital Management Inc., said by phone in New York Jan. 4. “The U.S. economy starting to recover could be very positive as a strong U.S. economy is going to help all economies.”
House Prices
The iShares FTSE China 25 Index Fund, the largest Chinese exchange-traded fund in the U.S., was little changed at $41.62 in New York Jan. 4, after rising 5.2 percent last week. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX) climbed 0.5 percent to 1,466.47 for a 4.6 percent weekly jump, after a government report showed U.S. employers added workers last month and the jobless rate matched a four-year low.
E-House China Holdings Ltd. (EJ) jumped to a more-than three- month high Jan. 4 after data showed new home prices in China gained for a seventh month.
American depositary shares of E-House surged 10 percent to $4.85, the highest level since Sept. 20. E-House climbed 18 percent last week. SouFun Holdings Ltd. (SFUN), the country’s biggest real estate website owner, added 12 percent in the week to $26.63, the steepest jump since November.
China’s Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development said last month that it would support demand from residents seeking bigger homes this year, prompting speculation that authorities won’t add to property curbs such as higher down payments and home-purchase restrictions.
Solar Subsidies
LDK, the second-largest maker of solar wafers globally, jumped 11 percent Jan. 4 to $2.14, the highest price since June 21. Suntech, the world’s biggest solar-panel maker, rose 2.7 percent to a six-month high of $1.87. Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. (YGE) climbed 23 percent in the week while Trina Solar Ltd. added 17 percent.
The Chinese government will provide a total 1.82 billion yuan ($290 million) in subsidies to 126 rooftop solar installation projects, renewing an aid program started in 2009, China Daily reported Jan. 4, citing the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. Assistance will range from 7.5 yuan ($1.2) to 9 yuan per watt, the newspaper said.
HSBC Holdings Plc said in a Jan. 3 report that China will become the world’s largest solar market in 2013.
“China is going to spend tremendous amounts of money on renewable energy, and they’ve dramatically raised their targets for the energy over the past two years,” Leeb said. “Solar stocks were down last year and the industry is growing.”
Gamers Discounted
Giant Interactive, an online game operator based in Shanghai, surged to $6.48, rallying the most among the five web game developers included on the Bloomberg China-US gauge. Perfect World Co. (PWRD) gained 19 percent to an eight-month high of $12.68.
Shanda Games Ltd. (GAME), Changyou.com Ltd., NetEase Inc., Giant and Perfect World traded at an average 6.7 times estimated earnings Jan. 3, compared with a multiple of 13.7 for stocks on the China-US measure, data compiled by Bloomberg showed. The discount gives them one of the most enticing valuations in the technology and Internet sector, Andy Yeung, a New York-based analyst at Oppenheimer & Co. whose ratings on the stocks range from market perform to outperform, said by phone Jan. 3.
Ambow Education, a Beijing-based provider of private tutoring services, tumbled to $2.34 and was the biggest decliner on the China-US gauge last week. Ambow’s American depositary receipts lost 68 percent in 2012, the worst annual performance on the index.
Hang Seng
Ambow reported in July a net loss for the three months through March of $12.7 million, compared with net income of $2 million a year earlier. It hasn’t published financial results since.
The company said Sept. 6 an internal probe found its tutoring centers are legally registered. The investigation was sparked by reports on Chinese state television that an Ambow unit exaggerated training results and that school registrations were incomplete.
The Shanghai Composite Index (SHCOMP) of domestic shares climbed 2 percent to 2,276.99 over the two days that it traded last week to 2,276.99, the highest level since June 20. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index (HSCEI) dropped 0.4 percent Jan. 4 to 11,937.45, paring its weekly advance to 4.9 percent, the most since January last year.

Subsidies will range from 7.5 yuan ($1.2) to 9 yuan per watt, totaling 1.82 billion yuan for a batch of 126 approved projects, the newspaper said.
The nation has since 2009 started programs to boost the use of solar energy from rooftop installations, China Daily said.

LDK Solar Announces Purchase Agreement for LDK Anhui

XINYU CITY, China and SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- LDK Solar Co., Ltd. ("LDK Solar") (NYSE: LDK), a leading vertically integrated manufacturer of photovoltaic products, today announced that it has signed a purchase agreement with Shanghai Qianjiang Group in which Qianjiang Group has agreed to purchase all shares of LDK Anhui, located in Hefei City, for approximately RMB 25 million. According to the terms of the agreement, Qianjiang Group will release the guarantee LDK Solar provided to LDK Anhui and its subsidiaries within 12 months, as well as compensate LDK Solar for any loss associated with such guarantee, prior to its release.

As of September 30, 2012, LDK Anhui carried consolidated negative net assets of approximately USD 54 million and as of September 30, 2012, total bank borrowings of LDK Anhui and its subsidiaries totaled approximately USD 485 million, with a consolidated asset-to-liability ratio of 107%. LDK Solar anticipates that the divestiture of LDK Anhui will increase LDK Solar's pro forma consolidated net assets by USD 58 million as well as decrease LDK Solar's pro forma consolidated asset-to-liability ratio by approximately 1.8%.
