A great benefit to juicing fresh fruits and vegetables at home is that your juice is made without any additives or preservatives! Also, you are making 100% pure juice within minutes, with no added sugars or other additives.
Using Your Juicer
When searching for a fruit and vegetable juicer, it is best to choose one that is going to give you the most juice possible. A juicer that will eject the pulp outside the juicing machine will give less juice than the juicers that will keep the pulp in the basket. Certain people prefer to have pulp free juice, so this may also be something to think about when purchasing your fruit and vegetable juicer. The recommended home juicing machine has a motor rating of 450 watts. If you have a more powerful juicer, the heat from the juicer will damage the nutrients in the fruits or vegetables. If you have a less powerful juicer, the motor will try to work too hard and eventually break down.
You should use your fruit and vegetable juicer on a hard, flat surface with the plastic or rubber legs of your juicer planted firmly. In doing this, you will reduce any vibration which will then extend your juicer's life. You should make sure that all the parts fit together snugly and properly, and you haven't left any parts out. Be sure to keep your fruit and vegetable juicer unplugged until you are ready to start juicing.
To clean your fruit and vegetable juicer, you should start by first cleaning the blades under warm running water. You should use a brush to remove the particles from the basket. You may be able to wash the removable parts in your dishwasher if your fruit and vegetable juicer manual approves. Dry all parts before putting the juicer back together.
Choosing and Cleaning your Fruit and Vegetables
Fresh fruit is always better to use, as they carry the most vitamins! Organic fruits and vegetables are also better than non-organics. This is because they don't carry all of the preservatives and pesticides that other fruits and vegetables carry. If you're not able to invest in organic foods, then just make sure that you wash your fruits and vegetables thoroughly with lukewarm soapy water. You may scrub your non-organic carrots under cold water to remove the soil, but you should try to peel them to remove pesticides and fertilizers. It is not necessary to wash them if you decided to peel them. Carrot and rhubarb tops should be removed prior to juicing. This is because they are considered toxic and they can be very bitter or sandy and full of soil.
You should never juice fruits and vegetables that are overripe or have gone bad, particularly tomatoes, because of botulism. You should remove all the bruised or damaged parts of the produce before you begin your chopping. Chop them just prior to juicing (this reduces enzyme damage and loss of precious vitamin C).
Juicing your Fruit and Vegetables
Apple pits do contain a very tiny amount of cyanide in them; you should remove them prior to juicing your apples. However, some people do include them while juicing. Other, larger stones or pits can damage your juicer, like peach or plum pits. You should remove these before juicing such fruits to prevent damage to your juicer. Grape and strawberry seeds are fine for juicing and do not need to be removed.
If you have large pieces of produce, you should always chop them first. This helps the motor and it also safer. You should also always use the plunger provided to push the material through the hopper.
Certain fruits like bananas and avocadoes are not easy to juice because they don't retain very much water. If you would like to use these fruits, or even dried fruits, they are better placed in a blender.
Fresh juice tastes best and is most nutritious when the juice is at its peak: poured right from your juicer. Since modern home juicers are simple to put together and clean, it's not a task to make a fresh glass of homemade apple juice or carrot juice in your own versatile juicer. Juice can be left refrigerated over night, but it takes away from the freshness, the flavor and the nutrients. It's better to drink the juice immediately after making it. If you must store your fresh juice, do so right away in a small, tightly-closed glass jar in the refrigerator. Carrot juice stores reasonably well for a couple days, while cabbage juice turns foul within 24 hours.
Fruit and Vegetable Juicing Tips
Starting your day with vitamins and natural sugars is the best and only way to go. You should try to have something solid with your juices in the morning. Whole-wheat brown toast is an exceptional choice. It will help to absorb any acids in your stomach when they become activated.
If you have never juiced before, you should try to use simple combinations to begin. The best choices to start with are carrot and apple juice. Even if you don't like carrots or apples to eat them, this is the gentlest juice for beginners. It does taste great, and they are both a sweet produce.
Juicing watermelons in the summertime is another great addition to the carrot/apple juice combination. Watermelons also work very well for liver cleansing.
Good bases for vegetable juices include carrots, rutabaga s, parsnips, or other such vegetables. These vegetables actually taste quite sweet when juiced.
A great addition to green juices is to use a tomato base. This way, the green juice is much more appetizing and less challenging for your digestive system. You can also make a delicious tomato soup. Put your tomatoes through the juicer, add some garlic and then slowly heat the mixture on your stove.
Neat green juice may burn the throat. Be careful if you are too eager with green juices as you can find yourself sitting in the restroom often. When you do something new, your body needs time to get used to it. So, it is always better to take things step by step to avoid overdoing things. Even though drinking green juices is very beneficial to the body, your colon and kidneys have to adjust to all of the new things you're putting into your body.
A great morning supplement juice would include pineapple, kiwi, and papaya. It tastes great, and will give you a good appetite before lunch. It's also great for the digestive system. Pineapple is a known source of Bromelian - a natural anti-inflammatory agent for arthritic joint difficulties.
Beetroot is a great detoxing element. It's very powerful and has an earthy taste, maybe even a little bitter for certain people. You should be careful to use small amounts at first. Try not to use more than 2 oz. Also, remember to be careful when you're chopping beetroot because it stains!
Celery and cucumber are natural diuretic additions for your juice if you suffer from fluid retention or PMS.
Pears are a hypoallergenic fruit. They're great for a delicate digestion with low fruit tolerance, juice in small amounts.
Some Naturopaths use healing juices including potatoes to treat stomach ulcers.
After juicing your fruits and vegetables, you should keep the pulp and freeze if you have to. You can use it in making cakes, sauces, meat loafs, muffins, desert toppings, and whole-grain breads.
Make your juice taste great
If you would like to make your juice taste a bit more appetizing, particularly in the beginning, you can include these basics:
Coconut: You can purchase the whole coconut or use shredded coconut. It adds a soft, delicious flavor and is a fantastic source of fat to balance the meal. Coconut has medium chain triglycerides, which have many health benefits.
Cranberries: You can also add some cranberries, providing you like them. Researchers have discovered that cranberries have five times the antioxidant content of broccoli, which means they may protect against cancer, stroke and heart disease. Also, they are chock full of phytonutrients and help many women avoid urinary tract infections. Limit the cranberries to about 4 ounces per pint of juice.
Lemons: You can also add half a lemon (leaving much of the white rind on). If you are a protein metabolic type you will not want to use lemons, as they will push your pH in the wrong direction.
Fresh ginger: This is an excellent addition if you can tolerate it. It gives your juice a little "kick"! Fresh root ginger has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries to improve circulation and to prevent colds and chills. It has also been used to calm and promote good digestion. It is commonly used to counteract nicotine addiction. You'll find it widely used in the winter months, because most people find it too hot to use in the summertime.

One of the most important decisions regarding making a juicer purchase is knowing what is the best juicer for your lifestyle. One of the main questions you need to ask yourself before deciding on a juicer is how much time you can allocate to making juice. It is also important to know which juicers take the most effort and time to clean up. Lastly, which juicer is the most efficient in terms of extracting the most juice from your produce with the highest quality nutrients.
There is not one single juicing machine that does it all, therefore you will need to decide what are the most important features for your juicing needs. There are three main types of juicers: Centrifugal, Masticating and Triturating (twin gear). In the commercial juicing market, the most common juice machines used are juice presses. Companies that make store bought juice like Odwalla, Naked Juice and Evolution Juice use these types of machines.
Here are the main differences between the Centrifugal, Masticating and Triturating juicers:
The Triturating (twin gear) juicer, which turns at a slower rpm than most juicers, has a two step process. The first step crushes the fruits and vegetables, while the second step presses the juice. This process gives you more fiber, enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals. Some of these juicers also have magnetic and bio-ceramic technology that slows down the oxidation process, which is good if you want to store your juice to drink later. These juicers are excellent for juicing leafy greens, wheatgrass, sprouts, root vegetables like beets and carrots and most water dense (non-pulpy) fruits. Juicing time is longer with twin gear juicers due to the slower juicing process which gives you a higher quality juice. If time is a consideration, this may not be the best juicer.
Many people buy a twin gear machine and realize later they take too much time to juice with and clean up. However, if you are dealing with a health challenge like cancer, it is important to drink the highest quality juice. So, the extra time spent juicing with a twin gear juicer might be advisable. Twin gear juicers will also homogenize making baby foods, sauces, nut butters, banana ice creams and fruit sorbets. My pick in this category is the Green Star Juicer. The two best models in the Green Star line are the 1000 and the 3000. The 1000 is the best juicer if you're going to use it for juicing alone. The 3000 has an optional pasta attachment for making fresh pasta.
The Centrifugal juicer first grinds the fruit and vegetables then pushes the extracted juice through a strainer by spinning at a very high rpm (similar to your washing machine on the spin cycle). The pulp from the produce is disposed of out the back of the juicer into a container in pulp ejecting versions. The centrifugal juicer is usually the fastest juicers to juice with if time is a consideration. Although more oxidation occurs with this type of juicer, the quality is still good if you drink the juice right away. With the centrifugal juicer, less juice is usually extracted from the produce and the pulp tends to be fairly moist with moderate juice waste. Most juicers sold on the market are centrifugal. Centrifugal juicers do an okay job with greens but will not juice wheatgrass. My pick for the best juicer in this category is the Breville Juice Fountain Elite.
The Masticating juicer uses a single gear. It chews the fibers and breaks up the cells of produce in a spiral rotating motion. The masticating juicer gives a high quality juice due to the slower juicing process. Like the twin gear juicers, the masticating juicers will homogenize making baby foods, sauces, nut butters, banana ice creams and fruit sorbets. Some will also make wheatgrass juice. My pick in this category is the Omega 8005 Juicer.
I have used all the types of juicers mentioned and my personal favorite at this time is the Breville Juice Fountain Elite. This centrifugal juicer, although not the most efficient at extracting the most juice from the produce, is the easiest to operate and clean. It has the fastest juicing and clean up time of any juicer I have used. The stainless steel construction is great and makes it extremely easy to keep clean over time. The juice quality is good if you drink it right away. It produces less foam than most centrifugal juicers. In a future post I will go into the pros and cons of specific juicers and write more about my top picks.

1. If you are juicing for health, it is useful to remember that fresh juice starts to lose nutrients as soon as it is made. If you want to retain the full benefit of your effort, drink the juice immediately or as soon as possible.
2. Some juice extractors, such as the centrifugal-ejection type, generate enough heat during operation to do some damage to the delicate structure of the juice. The resultant oxidation destroys nutrients.
3. Masticating juicers use a more gentle process, preserving more of the valuable nutrients. This also enables you to store the juice for a longer period.
4. If you have to store the juice for a while, make sure that the container is airtight, add a few drops of lemon juice, and keep it refrigerated.
5. When juicing for health, a clever gadget named PumpNseal can be used to vacuum seal juice in any jar. Removing the air enables you to store the juice for longer periods without nutrient loss.
6. In general, masticating juicers offer extra features, such as accessories you can use to mill, grind, puree, to make pasta, and to come up with the most delectable frozen desserts. When juicing for health, these extras will give you a fairly varied repertoire in the kitchen. A raw food diet will become more feasible in the process.
7. If you are concerned about a high noise level, rather choose one of the masticating models.
8. Remember to remove hard pits from fruit such as peaches. You won't eat these and neither will your juicer! Don't ruin the blades! Apple seeds contain small amounts of cyanide. Be sure to remove these before juicing.
9. Most body-building, leafy greens have strong flavors. Cucumber is a terrific disguise for this, and has the added advantage of containing important nutrients. Maximise the benefit by using one that doesn't need peeling.
10. If you are juicing for health, use organic produce as far as possible. Otherwise wash everything thoroughly.
11. Often the greatest concentration of nutrients lie just beneath the rind or skin.
12. Don't peel carrots, but do remove their greens. Rhubarb greens also need to be removed. There may be a problem with toxicity if you juice these.
13. Do peel citrus, mango and papaya. These peels are not usable and may even be harmful to you. The skins of oranges and grapefruits contain toxic substances. However, the white, pithy part just below the skin, contains valuable bioflavonoids. Aim to retain as much of this as possible.
14. Soft fruits such as peaches, melons and strawberries will produce a much thicker juice than harder textured fruit such as apples. Combine the two to improve the results.
15. Rather blend banana and papaya. They don't juice well. If you have one of the masticating juicers with added features, you can try these as a frozen dessert. Juicing for health isn't suppose to be a punishment, after all! Enjoy something sweet regularly.
16. Follow soft fruits with harder textured produce, to facilitate clearing the pulp.
17. Juicing leafy greens becomes much easier if you roll the leaves into a little ball, before feeding it into the machine.
18. Wheat-grass is exceptionally nutrient-rich, and has a taste strong enough to equal its value! If your juicer can manage it, start with tiny amounts and increase the quantity slowly.

20. Wheat-grass needs to be consumed in juice form, as the body cannot process the plant fibres.
21. Wheat-grass is gluten-free, in spite of its name. Gluten is found only in the seed kernel, and not in the stem and grass leaves of the young plant. It should therefore be safe for individuals with a gluten intolerance.

My ultimate goal in juicing was to improve my immune system. For a sickly person, it has achieved that end. Yes, I still occasionally get sick, but these occurrences are fewer and shorter in duration. In addition, I find that fresh juice provides me more energy.
I've been juicing for 19 years. It is an integral part of my lifestyle. Juice preparation requires the washing and cutting of fruits and vegetables. The scraps that do not make it into the juicer will end up in my compost pile. Eventually the compost returns to the earth to aid the growing of more vegetables for juicing, e.g., tomatoes, cucumbers and parsley.
