{"s" : "btu","k" : "c10,l10,p20,t10","o" : "","j" : ""} OVERVIEW: Shares of major coal mining companies have been under pressure in recent months as investors worry about the slumping steel industry and the recession's effect on some 2010 contract negotiations. Analysts also are closely watching how government energy policy under the fledgling Obama administration could affect the coal industry.
Lawsuits over global warming and the changing political landscape in Washington are pummeling an industry that has long been the backbone of America's power supply. In 2007, the Department of Energy forecast 151 plants would be built in coming years; the agency's latest forecast put the figure at 95.
President Barack Obama -- once a reliable backer of the industry -- on Feb. 17 signed an economic stimulus package with $16.8 billion for renewable energy and efficiency programs. The coal industry was left with just $3.4 billion. Congress had earlier removed $50 billion in loan guarantees for coal-to-liquids plants and the nuclear industry.
And there's the global recession. Shares of Peabody and many counterparts have slumped since reaching 52-week highs last summer, in Peabody's case shedding nearly 70 percent as global demand for electricity has fallen off. Peabody fuels roughly one-tenth of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent worldwide.
In announcing in January fourth-quarter earnings that easily topped Wall Street expectations, Peabody said it would wait until later this year to issue earnings guidance, calling that prudent in light of nagging "global economic uncertainty."
"The global economic crisis has put everyone in uncharted waters," Greg Boyce, Peabody's chairman and chief executive, said then.
Still, Peabody said it would consider acquisition opportunities this year and has made such moves.
I watching her CLOSELY. Need to climb past that, than baboom
testing it today, 1.99 close
The climb past 2.00 seems tough.....
2.75 - 3.00 before april is over is my call.
feeling any better as we near $2?
pop out @ 1.31.... some profit is better than no profit..
commodities havent popped yet......nothing has changed......still waiting
we did double...... down!!! what say you now?
They going to let this run? It's like watching water boil. I sold, bought back in lower.. I have confidence...............
Fundamentally this should not be here, like GE @ 6.68. This market is freaking crazy. Soon GE's .31 cent cash divy will be worth more than the stock. This market is frustrating.
