jealmc, I know that fintel does not have all the shares available for shorting. For those of us that watch shares available it has been coming down. A few weeks ago it was always 800K or more. Now it is 500K to 550K. I like the trend...
“Where are they coming from as there was only 550K available to borrow.”
Fintel only gets the short shares available from one large brokerage, it’s not the total number available to short. Interactive Brokers appears to be their source. IB also appears to get better rates for those lending their shares out than most brokerages. TDA is lousy at that. E*trade does a good job for share lenders.
Thanks for that clarification Vegas. A lot of shares changing hands.
dsteeler, all insiders are prohibited from selling short or buying or selling call and put options. I believe that applies to the company. Volume today 847K shares. Where are they coming from as there was only 550K available to borrow.
It is interesting that the company used two priced Dutch auctions to acquire shares. Could it be the company didn’t achieve the success in getting the share buyback they wanted? Just pure speculation, but could the company get shares through an option play to satisfy what appeared to be an urgent share acquisition? I’ve been here a long time (30 plus years) and have accumulated a substantial holding for being just an individual investor. I’ve wrote covered calls on a fraction of that holding many times. Sometimes called, and other times not called. The overall market is hot, but for IDCC it just seems out of the norm. A lot of folks are going to be out of their shares at many different strike prices. I’ll loose a few at 75, but knew that going in. Different strategies going forward. IDCC has been good to me, and they’re on a roll so I’m looking forward to even better returns. I guess I’m just wondering if the company could use the option market to augment the share buyback, or even if it’s legal. All very interesting.
We might do 4 if premarket was a correct reflection of things to come.
$93 O'reeno. Like Ernie Banks of the Cubs would say 'LETS PLAY 2' ! ! !
Can we do two today? Look at all those in the money options.
What? $95.83 in pre market! What’s next?
Zdog we are heading north on the oreeno’s and do not want to stop.
Great to see! If they keep adding revenue it should keep orenoing.
Gamco and Monterey now we need to close at or above $91. In the meantime cigars for all. At $100 oreeno we shall all have a virtual shot of Louis XIII (13).
My3sons87 - Another "oreeno", take your cigar! Another consecutive 52 week high.
Monterey we got close but no cigar. Soon though.
M3S…It looks like 5 o’clock Charlie is the only one ringing the $91 oreeno bell today but $91 is still only a heartbeat away before close.
I am ringing the $91 oreeno bell, which I hope happens today.

In this article:
Most of us have heard the dictum "the trend is your friend." And this is undeniably the key to success when it comes to short-term investing or trading. But it isn't easy to ensure the sustainability of a trend and profit from it.
Often, the direction of a stock's price movement reverses quickly after taking a position in it, making investors incur a short-term capital loss. So, it's important to ensure that there are enough factors -- such as sound fundamentals, positive earnings estimate revisions, etc. -- that could keep the momentum in the stock going.
Our "Recent Price Strength" screen, which is created on a unique short-term trading strategy, could be pretty useful in this regard. This predefined screen makes it really easy to shortlist the stocks that have enough fundamental strength to maintain their recent uptrend. Also, the screen passes only the stocks that are trading in the upper portion of their 52-week high-low range, which is usually an indicator of bullishness.
There are several stocks that passed through the screen and InterDigital (IDCC) is one of them. Here are the key reasons why this stock is a solid choice for "trend" investing.
A solid price increase over a period of 12 weeks reflects investors' continued willingness to pay more for the potential upside in a stock. IDCC is quite a good fit in this regard, gaining 23.2% over this period.
However, it's not enough to look at the price change for around three months, as it doesn't reflect any trend reversal that might have happened in a shorter time frame. It's important for a potential winner to maintain the price trend. A price increase of 8.7% over the past four weeks ensures that the trend is still in place for the stock of this wireless research and development company.
Moreover, IDCC is currently trading at 99% of its 52-week High-Low Range, hinting that it can be on the verge of a breakout.
Looking at the fundamentals, the stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), which means it is in the top 20% of more than the 4,000 stocks that we rank based on trends in earnings estimate revisions and EPS surprises -- the key factors that impact a stock's near-term price movements.
The Zacks Rank stock-rating system, which uses four factors related to earnings estimates to classify stocks into five groups, ranging from Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) to Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell), has an impressive externally-audited track record, with Zacks Rank #1 stocks generating an average annual return of +25% since 1988. You can see the complete list of today's Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) stocks here >>>>
Another factor that confirms the company's fundamental strength is its Average Broker Recommendation of #1 (Strong Buy). This indicates that the brokerage community is highly optimistic about the stock's near-term price performance.
So, the price trend in IDCC may not reverse anytime soon.
In addition to IDCC, there are several other stocks that currently pass through our "Recent Price Strength" screen. You may consider investing in them and start looking for the newest stocks that fit these criteria.
This is not the only screen that could help you find your next winning stock pick. Based on your personal investing style, you may choose from over 45 Zacks Premium Screens that are strategically created to beat the market.

“I have generally been a large buyer of IDCC calls in the past.”
I’m not smart enough to figure out how to make consistent money by buying options. Selling them seems to make more sense to me.
jealmc79, My $135. has to do with my calculations. It could go higher due to a short squeeze. I also believe that IDCC will continue to spend the rest of the money in their buyback. That should put the share count below 24.5M. That could be why the insiders have not been selling this year. I am happy with the option market in IDCC. I have generally been a large buyer of IDCC calls in the past. I still have some calls for Friday and next month but nothing after that as they are getting too expensive. When the 2024 notes come due it is almost a non event as the are hedged to $125.
Thanks. I assumed they just used the estimate figured from their last years tax return and wouldn’t have to pay taxes until next April 15. Either way it looks like they are not expecting the stock price to go down. I guess it helps when you have control of any company buybacks to know that. How did you come up with $135? Just a guess or back of napkin math? Even at $135 that’s only a 50% return from here. Good if it happens soon, but I know of better prospects, with even better options plays. Also, what happens when the 2024 notes come due?
Oreeno complete! EOM
To clarify , they have to make their estimates in the quarter they get their shares. In this case on June 15.
Jealmc79, They have to make quarterly estimates. I too have been selling puts for the last 30 years, but I have not sold the calls as I believe that the stock will go to $135 or more one day.
surely you jest. When was the last time you knew an employer who determined your raise because you have to pay tax on it. These dolts are overpaid for the underperformance that they watch over. This stock is lower now than it was in 2016, and that's not even counting inflation. How much have then been paid over those 8 years, not counting their taxes.
“The "gift shares" will cost them about $70K federal tax and $0 to $20K state tax depending where they live. This is why they usually sell half or more to pay their taxes.”
So, since I haven’t been able to find an answer yet from googling, do they immediately have to write a check for that tax or can they wait till April 15 of next year? I guess if they have some inside information, like a buyout coming soon or another auction buyback it would make sense that they would take all the shares and profit from that info.
“As to you selling covered calls against your stock there is only one person to blame or be happy with....””
Gee, thanks for the condescension. Been selling covered calls and selling puts on this stock for years. Made more money doing that than what little I missed on this run. Most years it was the only way to make a return on this investment. You win some, you lose some. Don’t know that how I feel about it is anybody else’s business. I know there are a lot of long timers here yet and I’m happy they are seeing this finally starting to pay off for them.
jealmc79, The "gift shares" are taxable as ordinary income. Most people on the board are in maximum bracket, The "gift shares" will cost them about $70K federal tax and $0 to $20K state tax depending where they live. This is why they usually sell half or more to pay their taxes. Also the "gift shares" are valued at the current stock price when they are "gifted". As to you selling covered calls against your stock there is only one person to blame or be happy with....
Took the words right out of my mouth. Then they won't even answers questions at an annual meeting. They limit you to two, and won't allow any follow-ups to the piss poor answers that they give. it should be a private company
The shares were given to them. Am I the only one that believes the directors are way overpaid and there’s way too many of them? 9 directors, given $185,000+ of free shares. What do they do to deserve that kind of compensation? Been in this stock 26 years and never understood this. Sorry for bumming’ on everybody’s parade here. Good luck to the longs here. I’m about to be called out of the last of my last shares here and don’t know if it makes sense to get back in. At least they were generous enough to give us lowly shareholders our token $.35 dividend. smh

Moderators |
The principle objective of the iHub message boards is to maintain a high signal-to-noise ratio while encouraging the exchange of all points of view. Moderators are an important part of making our message boards beneficial to all participants and readers. Moderating a stock-specific board, particularly those which are controversial due to many divergent perspectives or newsworthy events, can be a challenging and time consuming role. The time and effort expended by our Members who volunteer their time to fulfill this valuable role is greatly appreciated and our Moderators should be treated with the respect they deserve for donating their time and efforts to the collective benefit of our community. Company-specific boards are the lifeblood of iHub. The Moderators' role is simple to define for company-specific boards:
To promote the civil exchange of on-topic dialog that complies with the Investors Hub Terms of Service. |
It is no accident that neither the above definition nor the Terms of Service makes mention of investment sentiment, shareholder interests, or considerations such as "the good of the company." That is because the TOS are blind to investment sentiment. In order to be a successful Moderator and conduct a board within the scope of iHub's TOS, it is critical that Moderators distinguish their role and privileges as Moderator from their role and privileges as a posting Member. That is often easier said than done, particularly on active boards with both the typical and atypical controversy.
If a post does not fit into any of these categories the post must not be removed.
Some posts fall into a "gray" area and are borderline depending upon the way they are read. As inclusion is favored over exclusion, please err or the side of not removing posts if they are not clear violations. Please use the "Report TOS Violation" button at the bottom of the post with your comments if the post is not egregious in nature and Site Admins will review the message.
Bottom line: Please use your best judgment in removing posts based on the above guidelines and let us know if you have any questions or need any help. And keep in mind that post removal and non-removal have to be given the same emphasis. It is not permissible, for example, to remove a post that calls someone a "pumper" while not also removing a post that calls someone a "basher". Investor sentiment, including your own, can NOT be part of the removal/non-removal decision.
