Watchdog says U.S. wasted more than $15 billion in past 11 years in Afghanistan
In response to a request from lawmakers, the Special Inspector General calculated a huge figure, but says it may only be "a portion" of the waste.

WASHINGTON — The watchdog charged with tracking government spending in Afghanistan has released its first estimate of the total amount of money wasted there — a staggering $15.5 billion over 11 years — but says even that figure is probably "only a portion."

In response to a request from three congressman in 2017, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) began tallying the waste and fraud in the U.S. effort to rebuild the country.

After 10 months of research, SIGAR sent a letter back to the congressmen that estimated the waste at $15.5 billion between SIGAR's inception in 2008 and Dec. 31, 2017, or 29 percent of the spending it audited. In the letter, obtained by NBC News, Special Inspector General John Sopko describes the figure as "likely … only a portion of the total waste, fraud, abuse and failed efforts."

SIGAR noted that more than $4 billion dollars intended for "stabilization programs" in Afghanistan instead led to "exacerbated conflicts, enabled corruption and bolstered support for insurgents".

And the $7.3 billion spent to stem the Afghan drug trade has done very little to stop the "production and exportation of illicit drugs," according to SIGAR, which notes that opium production is now "at the highest levels since 2002."

The report comes as the Taliban has continued to gain ground on the battlefield against the U.S.-backed Afghan government and as the Trump administration has launched a diplomatic bid to end the war.

President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has expressed skepticism about continuing the American troop presence in the country. The U.S. has now had troops in Afghanistan for 17 years. Trump considered pulling out U.S. forces in his first year in office before reluctantly agreeing to extending and expanding the mission after a protracted internal debate.

Aware of Trump's impatience with the war, U.S. commanders and diplomats are now eager to make progress with peace talks. Officials told NBC News that the president could pull the plug on the American commitment with little notice.

During administration deliberations on the issue last year, Trump's then-chief strategist Steve Bannon favored withdrawing U.S. troops and replacing them with private contractors. The unorthodox idea — strongly opposed by the Pentagon — was floated by Erik Prince, founder of the private security firm once known as Blackwater that had U.S. government security contracts in Iraq. Prince's sister, Betsy DeVos, is Trump's education secretary.

The man suspected of killing President George H.W. Bush's former cardiologist may have targeted the renowned surgeon because his mother had died on the operating table two decades ago, police said Wednesday.

A manhunt is underway for the suspect, Joseph James Pappas, 62, who is accused of shooting Mark Hausknecht, 65, on July 20, police said. Pappas is armed, dangerous and potentially suicidal, authorities said.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said that authorities have an arrest warrant for Pappas, who is believed to have targeted Hausknecht for the death of his mother.

"There was a lot of planning that went into this. There was a lot of planning and, sadly, some skill," Acevedo said.

Pappas appears to be suicidal based on text messages that he had sent and the police department’s investigation, Acevedo said.

Acevedo said that a tip came into the police chief’s office on Tuesday. That tip led them to gaining an arrest warrant.

Pappas has an active real estate license, and was a deputy constable with Harris County from 1983 before ending his service as a reserve officer in 2013, records show.

Police were able to identify Pappas "thanks to the fact that we have a community that's cooperative, that is a partner, that understands that they have a responsibility to play a huge role in keeping our neighborhoods safe," the chief said.

Acevedo explained that residents close to the shooting examined their home security video, and police were able to obtain an image on Monday that led to Pappas’s identification through additional tips.

One tip seems to support the police department’s theory that Hausknecht was targeted: Pappas’s mother was once Hausknecht’s patient and died during surgery more than 20 years ago.

Two Huge Bombshells Concerning Hillary Clinton Bring Out the Global Pravda Crickets … Chirp … Chirp

Looking on from afar at the disintegration of the American Republic, as it circles the drain morally, spiritually, and economically, is profoundly depressing. The irrationality of the talking heads and politicians, the endless barrage of absurd propaganda, and more generally the absurd spectacle of Cultural Marxism and identity politics causing the country to devour itself — I can’t help but watch with a sense of foreboding as the lights inevitably go dim in the world’s most powerful nation. A tiny flicker of a sign of national repentance would be great. But there is none.

The last few days have seen the hysteria being ratcheted up way past that big red danger zone. To see how insane this all is, remember that back in April, the US and Russia came perilously close to a military confrontation, after America and two of its allies decided to bomb Syria on the basis of unproven and highly dubious claims of a chemical attack in East Ghouta (lo and behold, the OPCW has just released its interim report, stating that their results “show that no organophosphorous nerve agents or their degradation products were detected in the environmental samples or in the plasma samples taken from alleged casualties”). Did anybody welcome the two sides coming that close to a confrontation? Does anyone want them to go further next time?

Apparently some people do. Whereas a previous generation of journalists were mighty glad to see Ronald Regan sit down for talks with Mikhail Gorbachev, for obvious reasons, the current generation of Stenographers Masquerading as Journalists working for Global Pravda (aka Mainstream Media), who to a person appear incapable of rational thought, are in an apoplectic fit of gargantuan proportions because President Trump went and talked with President Putin, in an attempt to reduce tensions. Oh, and he apparently questioned the truthfulness of some with the US Intelligence Agencies? Wouldyabelieve it? Whodathunk it? He thinks they sometimes lie? No way!

In their silly warmongering minds, the only explanation for this must be that Trump is a traitor under the Kremlin thumb. Why else would the President of the Exceptional Nation humiliate the Exceptional Nation by saying that the Exceptional Nation had been the cause of much of the current problems? Why else would the President of the Indispensable Country humiliate the Indispensable Country by treating the President of a Dispensable Country as a sort of equal? Why else did he treat the meeting as a summit, rather than a chance to bawl, shout, and threaten the other guy? “In the interests of peace, perhaps”, says someone. Nah, it’s treason pure and simple, croaked the old Swamp Creature, former head of the CIA and one-time Communist, John Brennan — along with his fanboys and fangirls from the Deep State Bottomless Pit.

Apparently, the Stenographers have yet to realise that if the two nations do ever clash with one another, as very nearly happened in April this year, then they’re just as likely to get zapped as the rest of us. Someone tell the poor dears.

It’s all very sad, and yet at the same time there is something deeply amusing about the whole “Russia hacked our election” “Russia interfered in our democracy” circus. As I said before, the whole thing resembles a Convention of Village Idiots Involved in a Never-Ending Hunt for a Non-Existent Needle in an Ever-Expanding Haystack. Whenever they think they’ve found a needle — for instance, 12 Russian nationals indicted on charges of swinging an election by placing puppy adverts on Facebook (or something like that) — they excitedly cry out to each other that they’ve found it. Then when it turns out to be a shoe or a marble or a toy donkey, or anything other than a needle, far from it diminishing their enthusiasm, they take it as a sign that there must be a needle somewhere and carry on the hunt with even greater aplomb.

One of the sideshows of the Convention of V.I.s is that it is apparently on track to enter the Guinness Book of Records for the longest running spell of unadulterated hypocrisy witnessed since records began. “It’s terrible,” they cry. “So-and-so interfered in our election.” Did they now? With their puppy adverts? Well, guess which country has interfered in more elections, and been behind more coups and coup plots than any other country in the world? And guess which country openly and brazenly interfered in the 1996 Russian election to ensure the re-election of the drunkard, Boris Yeltsin? Oh yes. Let me see. Wasn’t it the country whose entire political and media class have spent the last two years hyperventilating about the apparent interference by Russia in the 2016 election? Yes, I rather think it was.

But the most absurd thing about the Convention is that recently a couple of actual needles were thrown in. This was undoubtedly done by the unseen hands of divine providence, who likes to make the proud and the arrogant look foolish from time to time. And do you know what the V.I.s did when they saw the needles? Why, they chucked them back into the haystack, pretending they hadn’t seen them.

What were those needles? Moving away from the haystack comparison and back into the real world, they were what are known in the media world as Bombshells. Oh, and they both just happen to involve Mrs Clinton.

Here was the first:

At the Congressional hearing last week, FBI agent Peter Strzok was interviewed by a number of Committee members, including Republican Representative Louie Gohmert of Texas (I recommend going to YouTube and watching the questioning of Mr Strzok by Mr Gohmert, as well as that by Jim Jordan and Trey Gowdy, as they are just amazing). Anyway, during the questioning Mr Gohmert mentioned an anomaly found by the Intelligence Community Inspector General, back in early 2016, regarding Hillary Clinton’s emails, which were famously going through her private server. According to Mr Gohmert:

“When they had done the forensic analysis, they found that her emails, every single one except four, over 30,000, were going to an address that was not on the distribution list. It was going to an unauthorised source that was a foreign entity unrelated to Russia.”

He then went on to say that when this information was given to Mr Strzok, who was at that time part of the investigation into Mrs Clinton, he ignored it completely. Mr Gohmert then repeated his claim on Fox News later that day.

If what Mr Gohmert is saying is correct, this is huge. Really HUGE. It means that:

a) A foreign state hacked into Mrs Clinton’s server and has over 30,000 emails, including many that contained classified material.

b) That state was not Russia (I have seen in a couple of places that the identity of the nation in question is China, but await confirmation).

c) The FBI, who knew about this early in 2016, chose to ignore this intelligence and keep it from the American public, because to have acted upon it would have killed Mrs Clinton’s chances of running for President.

d) Mrs Clinton should be in prison (but then, you probably knew that anyway).

e) Although the hacking of Mrs Clinton’s emails is not central to the Russiagate conspiracy (unlike the DNC and Podesta emails), it is implied in regard to one of the people indicted by the Mueller Inquiry, George Papadopolous, who is alleged to have told the Australian ambassador to the UK, that the Russian government had dirt on Hillary Clinton in the form of hacked emails. But according to Mr Gohmert, it wasn’t the Russian state, but another state, and so this starts to call into question the whole wretched narrative that’s been playing out for two years.

The second bombshell is related to something said by Vladimir Putin in the press conference after the Helsinki summit. He was responding to a question about Russia’s alleged interference in the US election, and in his reply he offered for Robert Mueller and his team to come to Russia to question those named in their recent indictment. However, he also said that this would only happen if Russian investigators were able to travel to the US to question certain persons they deem to be of interest. He then named one of them:

“I mean the high-profile case, involving [Bill] Browder’s Hermitage Capital company. According to our investigative officers, a group of people — Mr Browder’s business partners — who illegally made over $1.5 billion in Russia did not pay taxes either in Russia or the United States but transferred this money to the United States. They contributed $400 million to Ms Clinton’s election campaign. This is official information included in their reports – $400 million. Well, it was up to them, they might have done this legally, but the gains were ill-gotten.

We have grounds to suspect that US intelligence officers supported these illegal transactions. This is only one step forward. We can talk about expanding our cooperation. You’re welcome, there might be options that are provided for in the appropriate intergovernmental treaty.”

I won’t say much about Mr Browder here, other than that I believe him to be a scoundrel of the highest order. I won’t even say anything about whether Mr Putin’s remarks are correct or not (how could I know?).

Yet the claim itself is extraordinary. A huge sum of money, gotten by ill-gotten gain in Russia, for which Mr Browder paid no taxes (he also dodged taxes in the US and is now a British Citizen), was allegedly funnelled to the Hillary Clinton campaign via US Intelligence officers. That’s the charge. Whether it’s true or not, I have no idea. But it’s a pretty huge charge, is it not?

You’d think the media would be interested in pursuing these huge issues, wouldn’t you? But no. This is Global Pravda, after all. No, all you can hear is the chirp, chirp, chirp of crickets on these issues; that is when they’re not shrieking, yelling and hollering at the thought that peace might break out at some point.

President Donald Trump bumfoozled the world and the media for the umpteenth time on Monday when he had a successful meeting with North Korea's nuke-happy little dictator, Kim Jung Un, to talk about a world in which neither nation has to reduce the other to glowing radioactive debris.

This has, of course, been derided by Trump's critics (and they are legion) as either a completely meaningless gesture or a godawful tragedy of historic proportions. If not both.

We see it a little differently. Donald Trump has opened the door for meaningful progress with North Korea...and it's far too early to know if it will pay off or not. That being said, even getting to this stage was considered impossible by previous administrations, so Trump deserves considerable credit.

Based on the progress made, it seems that Kim Jung Un is a little more willing to deal with a President who takes a tough stance ("I will bomb you so bigly that your entire country will be like molten lava spraying from the devil's butthole") rather than the more nuanced approach affected by Barack Obama.

And by nuanced, we mean acting like a prissy pantywaist when he watched North Korea launch test missiles towards Hawaii on the freaking 4th of July and still gave no more reaction than a cocked eyebrow, pursed lips, and an exasperated sigh.

It was basically the same sneering reaction Barry would have at a formal dinner if he spied someone incorrectly using a salad fork instead of the escargot fork...while completely losing sight of the more important fact that any fork is a danger in the hands of a volatile, sociopathic murderer.

Here at Stilton's Place, we still don't really understand Donald Trump...but we do understand winning and, from the Left, whining.

And currently we're enjoying both.

When recently talking about disgraced former Senator Al Franken getting busted for fanny fondling, the syphilitic ex-president offered up this rationale as a feeble defense: "The norms have really changed in terms of what you can do to somebody against their will."

Apparently in Bill Clinton's world, there was once a "norm" in which it was okay to have state troopers drag women to his hotel room, it was okay to drop trow and do an enticing weenie-waggle, it was okay to take sexual advantage of women too young and stupid to know better, it was okay to shove cigars up their tunnel of love, it was okay to threaten women (or worse) who didn't keep their mouths shut and, of course, it was okay in Bill Clinton's "norm" to rape a woman and leave her bleeding in bed after chewing on her.

And the Left agreed, for decades, that this not only was the norm but it was empowering for women. Because otherwise, they'd have had to condemn Bill Clinton and the loathsome wife who enabled (and possibly encouraged?) this appalling behavior.

#MeToo is finally saying the things that conservatives had been saying all along. Welcome to the club, ladies.

The much anticipated agreement that was signed between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un Tuesday has drawn much hard-hitting criticism for not being sufficiently specific, especially on what denuclearization really means.

A photo of the document, which Trump deemed "very comprehensive," revealed that North Korea will work toward "complete denuclearization," among other points that the two leaders agreed on. But many experts expressed dismay and disappointment at the accord.

I swear. If Obama had done this, the press and those same experts would be raving about how wonderful it is, but if President Trump does something, they have to find "experts" who don't like it.

Sorry, Busty (and heterosexual males) but when the Miss America Organization announced that there would be "no swimsuits" in this year's competition, they weren't adding nudity to the mix - but rather insuring that in these #MeToo times, the contestants would be properly and fully covered to protect them from the lustful gazes of the babe-centric.

In fact, the women "will no longer be judged on outward physical appearance" at all...

Clearly this is a huge step forward for those who hate attractive women (and who doesn't?) and also represents a huge door-opening opportunity for the many women who've been unable to peddle their wares onstage since sideshows were outlawed.

The event (which is not to be called a "pageant" ever again) will now feature women, or people who want to be women, or people who are becoming women being judged (wait, can we still say "judged?" Shouldn't it be "honored?") while wearing the evening garb of their choice and "discussing how they will advance their social impact initiatives." Wow, talk about HOT!

The Miss America event is at least keeping the talent competition, so we can still judge - oops, honor! - women who can twirl batons, play "Lady of Spain" on the accordion, solve a Rubik's cube, read self-written poems celebrating abortion, or devour a 72-ounce steak in under 5 minutes without using her hands.

We are also given to understand that the "Miss Congeniality" award will now be replaced by a "Miss Congenital Defect" award, and we think it's high time!

The event will be televised on ABC on September 9th. If you're like us, you're already marking your calendar to make sure that your television (just like males all over America) won't get turned on.

In a hilarious appearance on NBC's "Today Show" to tout a novel he allegedly co-wrote, Bill Clinton was unexpectedly grilled on how he views the Monica Lewinsky scandal in light of progressive America's sudden realization that sexually abusing young women and destroying their reputations might not be the good-natured fun the Left always assumed it to be.

Slick Willy (looking increasingly like he's got a bad case of Sick Willy) was clearly annoyed by the host's repeated questions, denied any real wrongdoing, repeatedly claimed he'd apologized to Lewinsky before admitting that he hasn't (and won't), and also whined that he "didn't get out free" because he left the White House with $16 million in legal bills. None of which, as we recall, were actually related to his degradation of a woman 27 years his junior, but were rather a byproduct of his repeatedly lying under oath.

Clearly, Bill's not going to break his lifelong habits of lying and sexual predation just to please the transitory #MeToo movement. Especially since he sees all women as #MeatToo.

#Spygate: The Coming StormFlash back to September 2016, and let’s revisit a rumor that circulated widely in certain circles.

It has been recounted so many times that it serves almost as a bedtime story for the Right.

The scene: it’s the first joint appearance between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton—the Commander-in-Chief Forum sponsored by NBC—and it has just finished. Backstage, the now-disgraced moderator Matt Lauer is waiting to shake hands with the former first lady— but, instead, he is confronted by a furious Clinton and her entourage.

What faux pas had he committed? Apparently, Lauer had asked Clinton a question about her illegal email server that she was not prepared to answer, a question that she had not pre-approved.

According to the NBC insider who witnessed the scene, Clinton “proceeded to pick up a full glass of water and threw it at the face of her assistant and the screaming started.” She then lost her temper and began shouting at her staff.

“You f —ing idiots, you were supposed to have this thing set up for me and you’ve screwed it up! If that f—ing bastard wins we all hang from nooses! Lauer’s finished…and if I lose it’s all on you ass—-s for screwing this up.

This is a fantastic scene, one which would be hard to believe, if Clinton had not spent most of 2017 whining about her loss in assorted public forums, and blaming everyone but herself.

The American public now understands that profanity-laced displays of manic rage are perfectly in keeping with the character of the former first lady so aptly nicknamed “Lady Macbeth” by a portion of the press.

What makes this tirade so interesting, of course, is the dire prophecy that a Trump presidency would see Hillary and her gang not just humiliated or defeated but hanging by nooses—that is, presumably executed for treason.

Our Dumb Intelligence Community

Fast forward to 2018, and the scene now makes perfect sense.

A growing segment of the American public now knows that the country’s intelligence community was spying on the Trump campaign, and then attempting to sabotage the Trump Administration with false allegations of “Russian collusion.” That’s #Spygate in a sentence.

A long and tawdry web composed of lies, obstruction, and leaking has slowly been unraveled until the falsehoods of the FBI, the CIA, the Justice Department, and other assorted deep state actors were revealed.

FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has been fired, and is counting his GoFundMe cash in preparation for large legal bills.

James Clapper was hired recently on CNN to analyze all the nefarious stuff he did as the former director of the national intelligence.
Last, but certainly not least, former CIA head John Brennan has had to settle for pompous raging on Twitter—which is just about the most amateur thing that an ex-spymaster can possibly do. The erstwhile leaders of our “intelligence community” have proven to be not very intelligent at all.

Meantime, almost the entire American press, which is paid to be #WithHer at all times, have been sidelined by the largest political scandal since Watergate.

Most of them spend their days murmuring meaningless sentences that start with “Stormy Daniels” and “Russia collusion.” They are not merely uninterested in the truth about Spygate—they are actively attempting to conceal it.

What happens when the deep state people who leak to you are themselves in a deep state of trouble? It doesn’t seem to have occurred to anyone at the New York Times or the Washington Post to wonder. Or CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, or ABC if we’re being thorough. They all threw in their lot with the Brennan-Clapper-Comey conspiracy, without reservation or hesitation.

Journalism’s Decline and Fall

What happens when viewers understand that their favorite news outlet has indulged in the ultimate fake news narrative of the 21st century?

Already, CNN’s ratings have entered something like a death spiral. Still, the problem is much greater than one network’s self-destruction. The entire profession of journalism is facing a massive existential crisis.
When you knowingly lie to the public in order to help disgraced public officials cover up their role in conspiring against a sitting president, you’re not really a journalist anymore, are you? The mainstream media has been, as spies used to say, compromised.

Instead, it has fallen to a hardy fellowship of independent reporters to break the Obama-backed and Hillary-initiated Spygate story: John Solomon and Sara Carter, Kimberly Strassel at the Wall Street Journal, Mollie Hemingway and Sean Davis at The Federalist, Sean Hannity and his colleagues at Fox, and Andrew C. McCarthy at the National Review, among others.

Invaluable documents have been unearthed by Tom Fitton and his staff at Judicial Watch.

Not to mention the anonymous citizen-journalists and the small websites that started this story when no mainstream reporter would touch it. None of these people will be receiving any Pulitzers for their part, but that’s an award for phonies now, anyway. These reporters have done better than that: they have covered their names with glory.

What Comes Now?

This awful episode in our history has also thrust into the spotlight some unlikely heroes in Congress. Chief among them is Devin Nunes, an almost unknown congressman from the rural 22nd district of California when John Boehner picked him to be the youngest chairman in Congress, and the head of the House Intelligence Committee no less.

Nunes has turned out to be the Cincinnatus of our days. He has almost single-handedly dragged this conspiracy out into the open (though Chuck Grassley and Trey Gowdy deserve to be mentioned, too). Now the final act has begun.
What happens next will determine the fate of the republic.

Make no mistake: the American intelligence services have been caught red-handed attempting to subvert the 2016 election.

If the ringleaders are not brought to justice soon, there will be little reason for ambitious and unprincipled men to fear attempting such a coup again.

Just witness their collective behavior as we speak. Having been caught, these deep state bigwigs are unwilling to comply with congressional oversight, and openly are defying both the president and the House. You can almost hear the whispering in the halls of Congress: what should we do?

To the central question on the minds of every thoughtful citizen: do we have a constitutional democracy or don’t we? Are the people still the sovereign power or not? (Someone should go and ask Rod Rosenstein, as he appears to think that he is in charge of the country.)

I have two predictions. The first is that Trump, Nunes, and Grassley will ultimately sort this out. The second is my hope for the future: that there will be a statue of Devin Nunes, someday, in his town of Tulare where patriots will come to visit and people will light candles to his memory. If we still have a republic, it will be in no small part thanks to him.

During our restorative week off, there was certainly no lack of interesting news. Topping the list were the continuing revelations that our nation's corrupt, out-of-control intelligence agencies were pretty much all involved in a deep and dirty conspiracy to keep Donald Trump from being elected, and that the swamp dwellers didn't really worry about getting caught because they assumed the Queen of the Swamp would soon be President and would quietly bury their misdeeds as tidily as she'd buried Vince Foster and Seth Rich.

But just who the hell was this woman these agencies were trying to put in charge? The mysteries around Hillary only continue to grow...



Recently, people have been wondering why Mrs. Clinton is showing up for hot weather events wearing thick pantsuits, coats, and an omnipresent scarf which occasionally blows aside to reveal some sort of odd structure under her clothing. Odder, even, than her actual body.

The speculation is that it's a back brace...but from what circumstance, and why would she hide it? Then again, Hillary wasn't exactly forthcoming about her post-Benghazi brain trauma and loss of memory, her use of prismatic glasses, her recent need for a therapeutic boot, or having her arm in a cast after taking an alleged slip (or sip?) in the bathtub.

Oh sure, she could just be coquettish about the fact that her aging body is falling apart, but we can't help but wonder if it's something more sinister than that. What if Hillary is being rebuilt, piece by piece, to become a cyborg capable of being a shrill and annoying presence in future elections for the rest of eternity?!



Oh sure, it seems far-fetched, but this week we also saw the Left-leaning media celebrating when they thought North Korea wouldn't negotiate on nuclear disarmament, and top Democrats celebrating the beautiful "spark of divinity" in the bosom of every vicious MS-13 killer and rapist.

Is Robo-Hillary harder to believe than that? We think not.

Some stories are just too dumb for us to ignore. As a case in point, West Hollywood just presented their "Key to the City" to porn actress Stormy Daniels for her great community service in screwing married men and violating non-disclosure agreements.

Of course, that's not what they said she was being honored for. Rather, it was for her tremendous leadership in the "resist" movement (even though she didn't "resist" and never has unless she was worried that the check wouldn't clear) and for "speaking truth to power," which makes us wonder what the hell "truth" they're talking about. This is hardly a Wikileaks type situation, although Ms. Daniels should get full credit for kicking off the new phenomenon of Dikileaks.

We'd say more, but we have a sudden urge to go register a new domain name.

Today is Memorial Day. A special day of remembrance and appreciation for the countless men and women who have given their lives in the service of our country.

Their sacrifice deserves much more than the petty political bickering which cheapens our national discourse and casts a shadow over our values. In memory of these heroes, let us all try to be of service to our country and countrymen, in ways both big and small.

It's an important way to say "thank you" on this day...and every other.
