Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have Grateful Dead music from 1973, 1987, and 1989.
Tapers' Section at Dead.net
Our first selection this week is from 10/25/73 in Madison, WI, the Dead’s second excellent show at the Dane County Coliseum of 1973 (the first was 2/15/73), from just 10 days after the release of Wake Of The Flood. From the end of the show, we have Weather Report Suite Prelude > Weather Report Suite Part 1 > Let It Grow ; Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > One More Saturday Night, Uncle John's Band.
Next up is music from the opening night of the Dead’s final run of shows at Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura, CA, on 6/12/87 where we have the start of the second set, featuring China Cat Sunflower> I Know You Rider ; Far From Me > Man Smart (Woman Smarter)> He's Gone.
Lastly this week is the end of the show from the excellent 10/20/89 show at the Philadelphia Spectrum, where we have Space > I Will Take You Home> The Other One > Wharf Rat>Sugar Magnolia, Brokedown Palace.
Be sure to join us next week for more music from the vault.

Yep, just as expected! Had some friends that came into town to see show last night. Had seen over 50 of my 120 plus shows with a couple of them back in the day. They said the parking lot was more like a Bears Tailgate than a Grateful Deal lot scene and the show left a lot to be desired. Said it was cool to see them playing together one last time, but the magic just was not there. More forced than anything . Of course, that could come from them not playing together on a consistent basis anymore and having all the new additions, but still, I am happy to stick with my old memories!
Well, Dead in town this weekend and not the slightest bit tempted to go! Still have not seen them since Jerry's final show in Chicago back in 1995. Pledged that I would not after they went on Jay Leno before doing that first tour after Jerry passed to promote the tour and of all the Bobby or Phil songs they could have done, instead they did Touch of Grey? Anyway, seen Lesh And Friends since then and see Bobby with his band, but won't tarnish the memory.
That being said, I can just imagine The Dead fans maybe reaching back for one more travel back and being able to watch the show and also see the lake shore fireworks in the background. They should have fun.
Weir's band came to KC a little while back

Just had an MRI done. The tech asked me what music I wanted to listen to ie: rock, classic rock etc etc I said rock. The first group she said she had was the Grateful Dead, so I tuned out to the dead during my mri, how cool is that? The flash backs kept me sane in that claustrophobic death tube...

Eighty eight one hour compilations of live Grateful Dead music, year by year, absolutely heaps of prime performances, all soundboards, sourced from the GD vault.
Originally distributed freely to deadheads by dead.net back in 2006 and 2007, here these 192kbps mp3s are bunched together in yearly compilations instead of according to the month and day (regardless of the year) as was the case with dead.net's Tapers Section.
These 'releases' were hand picked by the righteous David Lemieux, archivist and ears-in-chief at dead.net. The performances are all, at the very least, well worth a listen - if not astounding. The sound quality is excellent throughout - and has been carefully tweaked too.

Five young dudes from Michigan, did a killer closer of China Cat/ Rider at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in upstate NY this year.
Not the show above though but close.
Also do some covers of Pink Floyd, Dylan, Beatles as well as some smokin' originals.
Funny thing...one of them was taken by an old friend of mine at a show I attended before I knew him.
Goes to show, you don't ever know!
Brought back a lot of memories when I got that link, never took a picture at a show myself, glad others did now.
Very nice...thanx Jaxstraw!

The original DAT WBOTB by tape #
Each tape is a 90 meter tape as follows:
Tape #1 - 2 18 71 all
xx xx 69 Pigpen solo project outtakes (2 songs)
Tape #2 - 2 19 71 all
Tape, most folks have never really heard a Betty Board. Until recently, that included me.
These tapes are great folks. You don't just get to hear the clang and hiss of a cymbal, but to hear the wood striking the metal disk, the clang and shake and wobble of the hissing cymbal. Believe me friends, you ain't never heard a Betty Board before.
These tapes, although based on two track reels spun directly from the soundboard, should not be confused with soundboards that have been released in recent years. For one thing, many of the soundboards that the Dead have allowed to sneak out seem to have been slightly salted in one way or another to degrade the sound quality. These Betty Board tapes are pure and sweet, with no salting: they are better! For another thing, these Betty Boards reflect the limitations of working with 7" or 10" reel to reel tapes: sometimes a tape breaks off in the middle of a song; sometimes you can hear the tape spin up to speed at the beginning of a song. There are a few unpleasant reel flips here and there. There are several incomplete shows. Remember, these tapes were originally recorded many years ago by hippies on drugs!
Over the next several months, there will be twenty or so people posting tape trees and/or tape pyramids of these Betty Boards right here on rec.music.gdead. Some DAT trees. Some analog trees. Some newbies trees. Some oldies trees. Some mixed. Some swaps. Some blanks & postage. Some European. There are also several face-to-face trees up and running. Our point is to make hi-quality copies of these shows available to regular old Bozos and Bolos like you and me. No authoritarian trips. No hierarchy. In fact, little hierarchy at all. Friends are spinning copies for friends. We offer them to the community. Y'all come!
We'll be calling it the "What's Become of the Betty's" tree.
The postings should begin to appear shortly. We'll be going in chronological order, beginning with the 1971 shows. Eventually we'll even make it to 5-08-77 (tm) and beyond. Which shows? Well, you'll know that when we start posting. Let's keep this fun. You just won't know what's under the tree until Christmas morning. Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile.
I'm making this initial announcement through an anonymous account mostly because I don't want to be deluged with email. There are several of us whose main part of the tree is spinning seed for friends who will do the actual treeing. I'm one of the seed-spinners. My decks are *full* for the next seven months, which is how long it will take us to tree these tapes.
Wait for the posts. It won't be long.

Original WBOTB DATs procured & circulated in 1996 by Jace Crouch and Tim Deibert.
Thanks to trailmix for providing the lineaged master DAT for transfer.
Transfer and mastering:
Jace's DAT (48 KHz) playback on Sony PCM-R500, AES digital output > Benchmark DAC1, XLR analog output > Grace Lunatec V3, sample rate at 96 KHz, AES digiout) > AES digital input, professional mode/sync - LynxTwo soundcard in E6400 dual core processor-based PC > HD as 24 bit/96 KHz WAV > Ozone 3.0 > MBIT+ dithering to 16/44.1 KHz WAV > CDWAV 1.9 (tracking) > FLAC (level 8). Recording, editing and mastering with Wavelab 5.0. All cables were Mogami Gold 0.3m pro-audio XLR cables. All components in the transfer/mastering chain were powered from a Cyberpower 1285AVR noise-attenuated uninterruptible AC power supply. Transferred and mastered by ChrisL.
Seeded by the Green Mountain Bros. at bt.etree.org, July 2007.
Comments:
- Most of "Promised Land" is missing with cuts at the beginning and end. Also the mix fluctuates and is largely bass and drums.
- First few minutes of "They Love Each Other" are absent.
- Popping/distortion on master DAT during first 1:20 or so of "Estimated Prophet" attenuated with manual redrawing of waveform. Some audible artifacts remain, though the end result is an improvement. These are on the master DAT and all previous circulating sources and are not related to transfer. A few similar sounding pops were present at the end of the track preceding it (IMHBTR) and on previous circulating sources (though not commented on in the db) and were also attenuated.
- Reel flip in Drums crossfaded.
- High pitched whine @ 15600 KHz (inaudible to probably >90% of Jerry-experienced deadheads, but not their kids/grandkids) was attenuated using Waves Q10 Supernotch on 24/96 fileset.
Thank you for posting this, I appreciate it very much.
Wow, I didn't know this board existed, awesome!
Donna Godchaux formed her own band in 2007, didn't know that..
