Sodium-ion battery production costs continue to fall!
CRU's latest product, the Battery Cost Model, enables users to forecast where production costs for layered oxide sodium-ion cells could go over the next five years.
With falling hard carbon prices, Chinese cell production costs will fall slightly, being cheaper to produce than their LFP counterparts by around 2026.

Where this belongs is unknown to me, this is worth sharing, because this concept was brought up 7-8 years ago. The Senior Engineer at that time said, this is going to be the way of travel, surpassing gas and electric.

Can’t get into the article, they want money.
But from the headline, that is so true.
Semi-solid state battery and true solid state batteries are what is being discussed here.
In terms of Semi-SSB’s. Those are what is in production and being made at the present. A lot needs to be ramped up in terms of mass production. Amprius and QS are the two I am invested in and that’s their first direction.
SSB is tougher, the manufacturing process is almost there and if I am not mistaken QS is the closest in that category. Amprius talks about their advances but there are lengthy processes to sort out.
Idemitsu Kosan, we will never know where they are in their manufacturing of the true SSB.
You have to wonder why, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, EVE, LISCHEN, JGME have never touted TRUE SSB, hmmm, they have been making batteries a lot longer then QS and Amprius.
But either way, those two stand to make a lot of noise when they are in full swing.

The question, when is that battery in production?
2027, my guess
While solid-state batteries are usually cited along with the 500 Wh/kg mark, the record 720 Wh/kg energy density of the new battery has been achieved with several technological breakthroughs.
"The all-solid-state lithium battery released uses a high-gram capacity, long-cycle lithium-rich manganese-based material for the positive electrode," tips Tailan, and adds that "in order to solve the solid-solid interface impedance problem... it is also equipped with Tailan New Energy’s unique high-performance oxide composite solid-state electrolyte."
Just as Elon Musk predicted, adding manganese is turning a very promising avenue for developing of high-performance EV batteries. CATL's M3P phosphate cells with manganese, for instance, offer 15% higher energy density than the LFP cells that Tesla uses in the Model 3 Highland.
“The pack offers 360 Wh/kg energy density with 95% solid-state electrolyte, and will be installed in retail EVs this quarter.”
This quarter, holy cow.

The question is, who beats who to market first?
This is why Amprius is going to be hard to beat, given the pack size and charge rate, Amprius is a winner. Actually SSB’s are the winner here until nuclear batteries(storage) is developed in the next 50 years.
The question is, who beats who to market first?

“We have devised an enduring all-solid-state battery system through a novel electrodeposition strategy,” says Professor Soojin Park, who led the research. He added, “With further research, we aim to provide more effective ways to enhance battery life and increase energy density.”

That is awesome.
Glad to see CATL and BYD are focusing their research on more than one battery type. Which we know they are, but to have it produced and on the road even better. It will be interesting if they can get the purity of the Na to 100%. Which would significantly reduce the weight that plagues the battery. Carbon anode, separator to prevent corrosion, makes sense.

Bolivia chose to partner with CATL, which produces SODIUM batteries to replace lithium batteries.
#chile, #argentina, #bolivia, #oscarvargasvillazon, March 10, 2024.
Bolivia chose CATL as its partner to test EDL technology in the Salar de Uyuni under the premise that lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries have become the fundamental component of electric vehicles (EVs).
However, CATL is already producing batteries with sodium-ion (Na-ion) technology. A development that threatens the future of lithium and its producing countries such as Argentina, Chile and Bolivia.
For Bolivia, the forecasts for sodium batteries are, at the very least, worrying, from the consultancy TKN srl, of which Oscar Vargas Villazon is a partner, we believe that sodium will cut the peak of lithium demand, we will begin to see that sodium will replace lithium for certain applications.
This scenario further exposes the delay of the National Lithium Policy in Bolivia, which in 16 years has not managed to enter the lithium market and worldwide, it is already prioritizing the replacement of the white mineral.
Tech war between CATL and BYD over sodium-ion batteries.
Today, the SODIUM-ion battery sector is being mass-produced by two Chinese groups: CATL-Chery Group and BYD. The two already have electric vehicles powered by sodium-ion batteries on the market.
The batteries produced by CATL have a battery pack with a capacity of 25 kWh and an energy density of 120 Wh/kg, has a range of 252 kilometers and supports fast charging from 3C to 4C.
China is estimated to have 10 GWh of sodium-ion battery manufacturing capacity as of June 2023. The country is expected to reach 40 GWh of operational capacity by the first quarter of 2024, according to the IEA.
CATL's sodium battery has a hard carbon anode and a high-sodium Prussian white cathode. Prussian White (PW), which is the completely reduced and sodium form of Prussian Blue (PB). Compared to competing commercial batteries, Prussian blue electrodes outperform them in terms of internal resistance, sodium ion storage and transfer rate, and transfer frequency.
Batteries account for a large portion of the total cost of an electric vehicle and typically account for 30% to 40% of its value.
Lithium price volatility also prompted battery manufacturers to look for alternative technologies, including sodium-ion ones. Sodium carbonate has been trading at US$200/tonne for several years.
Although sodium-ion batteries are not expected to overtake lithium-ion batteries in the short to medium term, sodium batteries are going to survive side by side with lithium batteries (10 to 20% of the market), it will reduce dependence on a single material, this should accelerate the transition to green energy.

The Trillion Dollar Equation
With Ampirus and Quantum so close. There are some exciting things being dreamed up in tech labs to accommodate.
But like I was saying with MULN.
Li demand is going to escalate fast here. 2026 peak and then dies down with over production again.
With all the SSB manufacturers coming into final R&D, the Lithium reserves don’t stand a chance.
“According to Mullen Automotive, its latest solid-state battery development and testing phase began in January when the EV automaker installed an energy-dense pack in one of its electric vans.
The initial tests measured the system compatibility between the pack of solid-state cells and the vehicle itself. Due to the higher energy density of the technology, Mullen shared it was able to increase the EV’s overall capacity from 42 kWh to 72 kWh using the same space in the platform.”

It’s been a long-held belief that energy-dense materials (e.g. NMC or LMFP) are essential for high performance EVs. Well, BYD have just shattered that belief.
BYD are releasing a LFP (yes LFP!) supercar, with a 135.5 kWh pack, offering a range of almost 500 miles, and the ability to charge from 30% to 80% in 10 minutes.
Manufacturers within the western supply chain often tout the necessity of LMFP for higher performance and lower cost, but as the graph below shows (thanks to Jeremy Lowen for this modelling), as lithium price falls, the cost advantage of LMFP is eaten away. Furthermore, its increased energy density comes at a cost of lower cycle life, due to manganese dissolution, reducing its advantage over the resilient LFP.
Exawatt has long believed the value of LFP at a system level has been underappreciated in the industry. Is it time for western OEMs to park more of their NMC or LMFP vehicles, with a shift to the tried and trusted LFP chemistry?
