the life cycle of a well
Chevron plans for the full life cycle of our wells, retiring them with the same emphasis on safety and the environment as when they were operational.
It’s up to Eliason and her team—as well as several other teams within Chevron—to properly restore the land surrounding decommissioned wells. By the time they’re through removing equipment and restoring the landscape, the land is prepared for its next chapter.
And John is sitting around upper 90’s percentage wise, in returned brine, no inorganic material.
He can master that with oil producers, he has cornered a market opportunity then.

Steve LeVine posted today a very interesting article on LFP mass-adoption. To add to his excellent article, please find here one of the reasons for the recent increase in LFP from China in the USA and European cell and EV factories.
The key LFP patents were held by four companies that made the decision a decade ago to let Chinese producers use the IP for free as long as they did not export. This started the large production ramp-up inside China for domestic uses. However, the key patents expired in 2021, opening the floodgates to exporting inexpensive LFP.

BHP can and will play the long game on their strategic foresight driven investment into hashtag#transition metals.
Since getting back into work after the holidays- it’s clear though from conversations across our clients that everyone is now focused on trying to understand what’s happening with the accelerated Chinese investment into the Indonesian hashtag#nickel sector- from hashtag#mining through to hashtag#smelting. What will be the hashtag#carbon, hashtag#ghg, hashtag#sustainability and hashtag#esg profile of that hashtag#commodity and hashtag#metal flow? Will price always be the key buyer criteria?
Quote from the article by James Thompson:
“But we shouldn’t miss what BHP is saying here in calling out a structural change in the market. To be clear, the view inside the company has not changed in terms of nickel’s long-term demand story. But there is a clear sense that the industry, and BHP, have been surprised by the pace at which Indonesia’s supply has increased, and the rate at which technological changes have allowed this lower-quality Indonesian nickel to infiltrate the part of the supply chain that BHP targets with its nickel sulphide.”

CATL has put into operation a new battery production base capable of producing an average of one cell every one second with the help of highly automated production lines in Guian New District, China.
The production base, with a total land area of about 1,435 mu (0.95 square kilometers), is being built in two phases with a planned combined annual capacity of 60 GWh, the first of which has already been officially put into operation.
The first phase of the project uses an advanced production line with an automation rate of 95 percent, featuring a high production pace and high flexibility, CATL said.
From material feeding to finished product output, the base can realize the speed of producing one cell in one second and one battery pack in 2.5 minutes, the company said.

Tesla’s New Lithium Refinery Plant is located near Corpus Christi, Texas!
I was able to head down to the Corpus Christi Lithium Refinery Plant construction site, almost four months since the official groundbreaking event took place on 8 May 2023.
Wow, there has been a TON of work and changes since then, with a large area having been earth worked, footings, trenching, ponds, construction trailers and Tesla office trailers, sprung structures, and even vertical construction with concrete pours!

Drone flight footage & infographics: 4:18 to 20:43
The flight began with some gulf-coast fog, but it was already clearing when I started the flight and eventually became sunny with great visibility. You'll note this transition in both the images above and the video itself.
Despite the fog, we get to see a lot of details around the site, with some very interesting large equipment assembly, active concrete pours, the iconic "Tesla Lithium" sign used during the groundbreaking and much more!
Since this is my first flight here as well, I took the opportunity to do a perimeter flight around most of the areas with construction and major changes since the groundbreaking and then closer views of the main refinery construction site itself.

It will take about 20 years for Canada and its most populous province to break even on the billions of dollars in public money promised to lure Stellantis NV and Volkswagen AG to the country, a spending watchdog concluded.
Canada and Ontario have pledged a total of C$28.2 billion ($20.8 billion) to the two auto manufacturers to subsidize production at electric-vehicle battery plants through the end of 2032, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government footing two-thirds of the bill at C$18.8 billion and the province paying one-third, or C$9.4 billion.
20 years, throw that $28.2 billion into a CD over the next 20 years and you are waaaaaaaay ahead.
New synthetic graphite production operations in the United States, including Anovion’s $800 million plant in Bainbridge, Georgia, and Novonix’s $160 million plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, will benefit from U.S. incentives included in the IRA and the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, executives said.
Vianode, jointly owned by Norsk Hydro and battery maker Elkem, aims to build synthetic graphite facilities in both Europe and North America, with enough capacity to supply up to 2 million EVs a year by 2030.

Will Li-ion batteries be replaced by one of the newcomers?
Not this decade...
Has something changed since I posted this one year ago?
Not really although incremental gains are being made especially with Na-ion technology.
* At this point Lithium is the preferred chemistry, the con's of other chemistries still are too big of a hurdle...
* While finetuning an existing technology or process is almost a given, pumping money in a technology that may or may not break through is a whole different ballgame for an investor.
* It takes time to get accepted as a mature, viable technology in mainstream automotive
I am curious if there are metrics out there on consumers and mileage acceptance in EV’s.

Meeting the Challenge of Future Commercial Energy Storage with TETRA PureFlow Ultra-Pure Zinc Bromide
By Archie Vest | Senior Director of Bromines, TETRA Chemicals North America | May 4th, 2023
The Zinc-Bromide Alternative for Power Storage Batteries
For grid-scale applications, an excellent alternative to lithium-ion batteries for power storage is zinc-bromine flow batteries. Invented in the 1970s, zinc-bromine flow batteries use low-cost, readily available materials, have longer lives, pose little risk of fire as the electrolytes are non-flammable, and provide duration cycles longer than their lithium-ion counterpart.
In fact, with the current proliferation of wind and solar power storage installations, the market for zinc-bromine batteries is growing fast, with several companies now developing and deploying commercial zinc-bromine batteries and building up lengthy backlogs for demand.
To support the fast-growing need for commercial energy storage, TETRA Technologies pioneered its TETRA PureFlow® ultra-pure zinc bromide for use in grid-scale storage systems and solar power battery storage. TETRA believes it is the only producer of commercial quantities of zinc bromide in the United States and manufactures PureFlow zinc bromide using a proprietary process at its chemical plant in West Memphis, Arkansas.
With regard to the security of resource supply, TETRA holds the mineral rights to extensive brine leases in Arkansas that are estimated to contain 5.25 million tons of bromine. The Company is currently completing a detailed geological, reservoir, and production simulation study to determine and ensure a long-term supply of bromide.
The high-purity characteristics of PureFlow zinc bromide make it ideal for large-scale, long-lasting, high-performing battery technologies. To date, PureFlow zinc bromide has been tested and qualified by three separate manufactures of zinc-bromine storage batteries. In 2021, TETRA entered an agreement with Eos Energy Enterprises for collaboration and long-term supply of zinc bromide to support production of Eos’ innovative Znyth aqueous zinc battery. Based in Edison, New Jersey, Eos is a leading provider of safe, scalable, efficient, and sustainable zinc-based long-duration energy storage systems.
