Been following a bunch of these R/S rockets. I believe the cause is due to the CAT system. A R/S causes all presplit shares to be reissued with a new cussip number. Only real shares get issued under the new cussip number. The CAT system forces accounting for all the share history. Naked shares borrowed and sold short technically dont exist so are not subject to the R/S and must be purchased to close out an exposed short position. Imagine holding a several million share naked short position through the R/S. Now you only have about a million outstanding shares to close a short position that will get eaten alive in borrow fees once the system catches up to the R/S. Soon as the cost to borrow fees get updated to what the actual float and OS count is, get ready for lift off!
