Union Strike Reaches Ford's (F) Biggest Plant
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | October 12, 2023
• Members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union walked out of Ford's Kentucky facility
• Put traders are chiming in at double the average intraday volume
Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F) stock is down 2.5% to trade at $11.95 at last check, following news that 8,700 members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union walked out of the car manufacturer's Kentucky plant as part of their strike. The facility is the biggest in terms of workers and revenue, with production of pickup trucks now halted.
A long-term floor at the $11.70 region is containing today's pullback, and Ford Motor stock still sports a 7.5% year-to-date lead. The shares have struggled to conquer the $12.90 level after cooling from their July 5, one-year high of $15.42, and are now facing pressure at their 20-day moving average.
Options bears are already chiming in, with 23,000 puts exchanged so far, which is double the volume that is typically seen at this point. Most popular by far is the November 12 put.
Those looking to weigh on F's next moves should consider options. The equity's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 32% sits in the 16th percentile of its annual range, meaning options traders are pricing in relatively low volatility expectations.

Ford Motor Co (F), General Motors Pop After UBS Bull Notes
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | September 13, 2023
• UBS is bullish on the auto sector
• More analysts could swoop in and switch up sentiment
UBS initiated coverage on 13 auto stocks. The analyst hit Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F) with a "buy" rating and $15 price target, implying a 21% upside to last night's close after praising its commercial segment, saying it should show better-than-expected resiliency and reduce headwinds from blue and electric car models. Meanwhile, UBS also called General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) a "buy."
Coming into today, there's plenty of room for other Wall Street brokerages to jump on UBS' bullish wagon. Concerning F and GM, eight of 14 and eight of 17, respectively, rated the equities a "hold" or worse.
Auto stocks are higher across the board following the sector upgrade. Ford Motor stock, in particular, was last seen 3.2% higher at $12.85, as it looks to add to a 12.5% year-to-date lead. General Motors stock, meanwhile, is up 2.1% at $34.19 at last glance, looking to add to its slim 0.5% 2023 gain.
Using options to get in on either could be a prudent play, as both sport low volatility expectations, with a tendency to outperform said expectations, to boot. This is per F's Schaeffer's Volatility Index (SVI) of 31%, which ranks in the low 13th percentile of annual readings. Meanwhile, its Schaeffer's Volatility Scorecard (SVS) stands at 88 (out of a possible 100). Similarly, GM's SVI of 32 is lower than 82% of readings, while its SVS stands at 92.

Ford, partners pick Canada for $900 million battery materials plant
By: Investing.com | August 17, 2023
OTTAWA (Reuters) -A consortium of Ford Motor (NYSE:F) Co and South Korean companies on Thursday said they would build a C$1.2 billion ($887 million)plant to produce electric vehicle (EVs) battery materials in Becancour, Quebec, a town seeking to become an EV-supply-chain hub, Canada's industry ministry said.
The consortium includes South Korean partners EcoProBM and SK On Co Ltd, according a statement from the ministry. The factory will eventually produce 45,000 tonnes of cathode active materials (CAM) per year for Ford EVs.
Ford in a separate statement described the materials as high-quality Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) for rechargeable batteries that are targeting greater performance and improved EV range.
"This cathode facility will supply the material that goes into Ford's future EVs in North America, specifically some of our future trucks," Lisa Drake, Ford vice president for EVs, told reporters.
It is Ford's first investment in Quebec, although it has operated in neighboring Ontario for more than a century.
Canada's federal government will provide the consortium with a conditional loan of C$322 million and Quebec will offer the same amount as a partially forgivable loan, the statement said. The factory is expected to be operational in the first half of 2026, creating more than 345 jobs.
This is the latest in a series of construction announcements for Becancour, a town of fewer than 15,000 people on the St. Lawrence River that is shaping up to be an EV-supply-chain hub in North America.
"This is a big vote of confidence in the (EV) ecosystem we've been building," Canada industry minister Francois-Philippe Champagne told Reuters. "This is very significant for Quebec, because as you know the auto sector has been primarily investing in Ontario, but now we have GM, now we have Ford in Becancour."
General Motors Co (NYSE:GM) and South Korea's POSCO (NYSE:PKX) Future M in May said they would increase production capacity at a chemical battery materials facility whose construction was first announced last year. Germany's BASF SE (OTC:BASFY) is also building a battery materials factory there.
Canada, home to a large mining sector for minerals including lithium, nickel and cobalt, is trying to woo companies involved in all levels of the EV supply chain via a multibillion-dollar green technology fund as the world seeks to cut carbon emissions.
German automaker Volkswagen (ETR:VOWG_p) and Stellantis, the parent of brands including Fiat and Chrysler, are building multibillion-dollar battery plants west of Quebec in Ontario, the heartland of Canada's fossil-fuel-powered car industry that has historical trade and production links with the Detroit carmakers.

Morgan Stanley remains bullish as Ford plans JV in China
By: Investing.com | August 15, 2023
Morgan Stanley reiterated an Overweight rating on Ford Motor (NYSE:F) with a 12-month price target of $16.00 after documents released by China market regulators revealed that the automaker plans to setup a new-energy passenger car joint venture (JV) with state-owned Chongqing Changan Automobile (SZ:000625).
According to this new JV, Changan Ford Motor will hold a 60% ownership share, while Chongqing Changan Automobile will possess a 40% stake. This arrangement would grant Changan a total economic interest of 70%. Although additional specifics about the agreement will be disclosed in due course, the JV's primary focus is expected to involve manufacturing and distributing new energy passenger vehicles under mainstream brands, along with distributing Ford brand models.
“The announcement corroborates Ford management messaging around leaning into the strength of Chinese auto players in China.” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in a note.
Ford's sales in China have experienced an 80% decline since 2016, resulting in a market share of less than 1% in the country as of year-to-date 2023. The analysts raised doubts about the company's capacity to bring about substantial transformation in the geographical market, even through a joint venture.
Morgan Stanley's "Overweight" relies on a substantial shift in the electric vehicle strategy, necessitating increased cooperation with competitors.
“We look forward to exploring areas where Ford can execute a relevant electric vehicle program while mitigating the significant cash drain on the enterprise.” the analysts added.
Shares of F are down 0.86% in premarket trading Tuesday morning.

Ford (F) Stock Downgraded on Product Strategy Change
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | July 31, 2023
• Jefferies downgraded Ford stock to "hold" from "buy"
• The company recently shifted focus away from its EV unit
Jefferies downgraded Ford Motor Co (NYSE:F) to "hold" from "buy" before the bell this morning, with a price-target cut to $15 to $17. The company recently changed its product strategy, slowing production of its electric vehicles (EV) to focus on its commercial vehicle unit. The brokerage stated that no matter how sensible the change is, it is still a setback following the May 22 investor day.
At last glance, Ford stock was down 0.5% to trade at $13.20. The security has been sliding on the charts since running into pressure above the $15 level at the beginning of the month, and is looking to end July with a nearly 13% monthly loss. Year-to-date, the shares are up 19%.
Call traders have been eyeing F, per its 50-day call/put volume ratio of 2.39 over at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX). This ratio ranks higher than 90% of readings from the past year.
Analysts, meanwhile, are leaning bearish, with eight of the 23 in coverage carrying a "buy" or better rating, and 15 a "hold" or worse. Meanwhile, the 12-month consensus price target of $14.19 is a 7.7% premium to current levels.

Earnings Preview: Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F)
By: 24/7 Wall St. | July 26, 2023
• Here is a look at four companies scheduled to share their quarterly results later on Thursday.
Ford
Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) stock has added nearly 6% over the past 12 months, including a gain of nearly 17% so far in 2023. That’s pretty good, considering. And what investors have to consider is the company’s plans versus the dividend Ford now pays.
Last week, Ford said it planned to triple the production rate of its F-150 Lightning EV and sell it for around $40,000. There go the fat profits, and with them, investors believe, hopes for higher dividends. The scheme worked for Tesla, but can Jim Farley make it work for Ford? The day the company announced its plan, Ford’s market value dropped by $3.6 billion.
Analysts remain cool to the stock, with nine of 22 brokerages having a Hold rating and nine more a Buy or Strong Buy rating. At a recent price of around $13.60 a share, the implied gain based on a median price target of $14.00 is 2.9%. At the high price target of $22.00, the upside potential is 61.7%.
Ford’s Second-quarter revenue is forecast at $41.32 billion, which would be up 5.7% sequentially and by 9.0% year over year. Adjusted EPS are forecast at $0.54, down 14.9% sequentially and by 20.6% year over year. For the full 2023 fiscal year, consensus estimates call for EPS of $1.89, up 0.4%, on sales of $161.65 billion, up 8.5%.
Ford stock trades at 7.2 times expected 2023 EPS, 7.5 times estimated 2024 earnings of $1.82 and 6.8 times estimated 2025 earnings of $2.00 per share. Its 52-week trading range is $10.90 to $16.68. Ford pays an annual dividend of $0.60 (yield of 4.26%). Total shareholder return for the past year was 17.44%.

Ford slashes prices of F-150 Lightning trucks as EV wars heat up
By: Investing.com | July 17, 2023
(Reuters) -Ford deepened a price war in the electric-vehicle industry on Monday by slashing the prices of its F-150 Lightning trucks, including a 17% cut for the base model, as it aims to boost its share of an EV market dominated by Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA).
Ford's shares closed down 6% at $14.09.
The Detroit-based automaker, which had raised Lightning prices earlier this year, said it was able to cut prices following improvements in scale and battery raw material costs. In the quarter through June, Ford's EV sales fell 2.8%.
The move comes amid a price war started by Tesla a few months ago, which has seen EVs of legacy automakers piling up at dealers as sales slow.
"The Ford Lightning is a good vehicle, just somewhat expensive, especially given the high interest rates these days for any kind of loan," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a tweet on Monday.
Last week, Tesla said it built its first Cybertruck at its plant in Austin, Texas, after two years of delays.
"Shortly after launching the F-150 Lightning, rapidly rising material costs, supply constraints and other factors drove up the cost of the EV truck for Ford and our customers," Marin Gjaja, chief customer officer at Ford Model e, said on Monday.
"We've continued to work in the background to improve accessibility and affordability."
Ford also said it has temporarily closed its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Michigan to complete final plant upgrades as it aims to triple the facility's annual run rate to 150,000 Lightning trucks, beginning this fall.
Though pricing will always be a meaningful driver, getting from a $3 billion loss rate for the Ford Model e to breaking even will require the lion's share to come from scale, BNP Paribas (OTC:BNPQY) Exane analyst, James Picariello said.
Battery raw material prices have been one of the factors that pushed EV prices up. But prices of cobalt and lithium, crucial for EV batteries, have declined.
Ford has also strengthened its sourcing options and unveiled new supply deals for battery-grade lithium earlier this year.
The base Pro variant of Lightning now carries a suggested retail price of $49,995, compared with its prior price of $59,974, while the higher-end Platinum model will cost about 6.2% less, at $91,995.

Ford Motor stock downgraded at CFRA on valuation, EV production ramp-up issues
By: Investing.com | July 7, 2023
CFRA analysts lowered their recommendation on Ford Motor (NYSE:F) stock to Hold with the price target of $16 per share still maintained.
Ford reported a 16.1% increase in U.S. auto sales for the last month, pushing the total Q2 sales to 531,662 units, up 9.9% year-over-year. The Q2 car sales performance was better than expected as analysts were looking for sales of 524,000.
However, the analysts flag “sluggish” F-150 Lightening production numbers with Q2 sales of this popular EV model up just 4% compared to Q1.
“We think EV production ramp-up issues are likely to be widespread among traditional automakers as they attempt to execute aggressive growth plans. After a 30% YTD run-up for the stock, we lower our rating to Hold, but continue to view Ford's dividend yield as compelling,” they added in a note.
Ford stock fell 2.4% on Thursday.
