Hitachi's System Architecture is selected by Delphi Delco Electronics AND MANNESMANN VDO AG for Development of Next-Generation IN-Car InfoTAINMENT Systems
Industry leaders endorse Hitachi's silicon solution as industry standard
San Jose, CA and Maidenhead, UK – October 16, 2000 - Hitachi, Ltd., Semiconductor and Integrated Circuits Group today announced that two of the world's leading automotive suppliers, Mannesmann VDO AG of Germany and Delphi Delco Electronics Systems of the United States, will base their next-generation car information systems (CIS) on Hitachi's system architecture. In addition, the companies are individually collaborating with Hitachi for research and development of a standards-based solution.
As a key supplier in the emerging CIS market, Hitachi will offer a standard hardware solution based around its SuperH® microprocessor family and companion chips. This solution will be tailored to suit individual applications at a software level to ensure the increasing consumer demand for integrated in-car systems is met in the most effective way. The resulting in-car multimedia solution will integrate audio, navigation, communication, video, entertainment, safety and security capabilities within vehicles. The innovative new systems will be incorporated in vehicles debuting around 2003.
Commenting on the cooperation agreement, Robert W. Schumacher, director, Delphi MobileMedia group of Delphi Delco Electronics, said: "Hitachi's partnership approach to the development of an open platform and common chipset provides the performance versatility and functionality we seek for our future mobile multimedia applications."
"Our needs are defined by the customers," said Mr. Rolf-Juergen Bruess, Senior Executive Vice President, Technology, VDO Car Communication. "We require an open architecture that delivers high performance, cost efficiency and upgradablility with a clear development roadmap. We are convinced that with Hitachi we have found an excellent partner to exploit advanced technology in order to master solutions for tomorrow's mobile world based on our Top Level Architecture TLA".
New Architecture to Lead the Industry
Hitachi is creating the industry's first, open architecture for car information systems, capable of supporting all major operating systems. As well as extending its development activities in partnership with VDO and Delphi Delco Electronics Systems, Hitachi is working with a number of systems partners to create the de facto standard for advanced mobile infotainment systems.
The core of Hitachi's system architecture is the industry-leading SuperH 32-bit RISC engine, an embedded microprocessor that optimises the balance between power, performance and cost, making it an ideal platform for the development of in-car multimedia systems and other applications. It is already one of the most successful processor platforms for car navigation systems and has been used as a reference processor core by Microsoft for WindowsÒ CE for automotive.
In addition to the SuperH RISC processor, the dedicated CIS solution incorporates a companion chip called AMANDA, which combines multiple functions needed in this type of system. AMANDA includes a high-performance, two-dimensional graphics engine, video input and communication peripherals. Further details of the AMANDA Companion Chip will be available toward the end of the year. Holger Zielke, Automotive Group Executive, Electronic Components Group, Hitachi Europe Ltd., added: "We are delighted that two of the world's leading developers of in-car multimedia systems have selected Hitachi's architecture to form the platform for the development of next generation car information systems. "We believe that our SuperH family of microprocessors, combined with the best of other industry-leading components and operating systems will become the de facto standard for in-car infotainment systems."
Ali Sebt, Vice President of Product Business Units for Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc., said: "Hitachi's relationship with Delphi and VDO is a prime example of how we can provide a complete system solution including integration of multiple operating systems and efficient middleware. This addresses our customers' time-to-market needs and enables the delivery of content and services for personal information electronics."

calls safely and quickly."
Fonix Speech Solutions, in U.K. English, French, or German, will speak directly
to the user, requesting the information needed to place the call. With the use
of a headset, users can easily place calls hands-free, without needing to view
or manipulate the WDA, using Fonix speaker-independent ASR.
Fonix Speech Solutions will come pre-loaded in the ROM on the HP Jornada 900
series wireless digital assistant products known as the HP Jornada 900 series
running on a TI OMAP(TM) Processor CPU; using Microsoft Windows for Pocket PC

ALK Technologies, Inc. Selects Fonix to Provide Speech For CoPilot Navigation
Solutions
Text-To-Speech Solution Available in May
SALT LAKE CITY and PRINCETON, N.J., April 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Fonix(R) Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: FONX), a leading provider of
natural-user interface technology solutions for wireless and mobile devices,
Internet and telephony systems, and vehicle telematics, in conjunction with
ALK Technologies, Inc., a developer of advanced transportation technology,
today announced that ALK has selected Fonix Text-To-Speech (TTS) for
implementation in ALK's award-winning CoPilot(R) and Pocket CoPilot GPS
navigation and route guidance solutions for fleets and business travelers.
CoPilot technology, with Fonix TTS, will be a vast improvement over other
applications that merely supply common commands such as "turn right, turn
left." CoPilot users, such as technology enthusiasts, and business and
leisure travelers, will actually hear spoken street names, city names,
Points-of-Interest, freeway names and numbers, addresses, and any other text
that the ALK navigation system provides, in addition to common guidance
instructions. The Fonix-enabled CoPilot navigation solutions will provide
improved operation with clearer, street-specific directions for operators of
any over-the-road vehicles.
"Fonix Corporation was selected due to its integrated solution providing a
small footprint, minimal memory and power requirements, high-quality, and
quick response Unlimited Vocabulary TTS," said Ted Annis, Senior Marketing
Manager, ALK Technologies, Inc. "CoPilot and Pocket CoPilot, by adding Fonix
TTS, continue to improve their interfaces by verbally delivering detailed
navigation information to the driver. Again, with safety as a major concern,
CoPilot Solutions have added a feature that will greatly enhance the user
experience."
"ALK's CoPilot and Pocket CoPilot solutions, which sell thousands of units
each month, have been highly-touted and well received within the
auto-navigation industry, and the Fonix TTS solution will contribute to the
continued success of ALK's CoPilot Solutions," noted Kurt W. Flygare, Fonix
Vice President of Sales. "With Fonix TTS, CoPilot users will receive their
directions in a human voice, and depending on the country in which the user
resides, have the option of choosing to hear those instructions in US English,
UK English, French, or German."
CoPilot Technology is the backbone of a family of ALK products that are
recognized as the number one award-winning in-vehicle GPS navigation and route
guidance solutions available today. Marketed by the TravRoute division of
ALK, solutions include CoPilot 2002 for laptops and Pocket CoPilot for Pocket
PC-based handheld devices. Pocket CoPilot is currently used in the iPAQ
Navigation System, marketed by Compaq in the UK.
"CoPilot Solutions get you precisely where you need to be with directions
to any address nationwide," continued Mr. Annis. "And with dynamic voice
navigation and route guidance technology, CoPilot not only shows you where to
go, it verbally guides you to your destination in real-time. If you miss a
turn or get off track, CoPilot automatically reroutes you."
Users may purchase CoPilot directly from TravRoute (ALK Technologies) at
www.travroute.com , by calling the toll-free number, 1-888-TRAVROUTE
(872-8768), or from an authorized reseller, such as Camping World, Mobile
Planet, Adventure GPS, pocketpcfanatic.com, or pdamart.com.

Fonix(R) Corporation, a leading provider of natural-user interface technology
and voice solutions for wireless and mobile devices, and Serotek Corporation
announced that Serotek has selected Fonix Speech Solutions for use with Freedom
Box, a new Internet accessibility product that unlocks the Internet for the
blind or anyone unable to use standard point-and-click technology.
Freedom Box is a breakthrough in World Wide Web accessibility that allows a user
to navigate the Internet strictly by voice command -- a gigantic step forward
for the visually impaired or physically disabled. Fonix Text-To-Speech (TTS) and
Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), embedded within the Freedom Box platform,
allow users to take advantage of many of the Internet's most desirable services,
such as sending and receiving email, shopping online, conducting online
research, and accessing news and entertainment.
"Fonix software has a remarkably small footprint, making it an ideal choice for
the Freedom Box software platform," said Mike Calvo, chief executive officer of
Serotek Corporation. "The programming versatility from Fonix also plays an
important role in our design of Freedom Box's Flexible User Interface, which
will allow a user to blend voice operation with a variety of other accessibility
tools, such as keyboards, computer mice and touch-screen peripherals, to create
a customized interface best suited to the user."
Fonix, now deploying its DECtalk TTS product, provides extremely high quality
and intelligible TTS functionality in embedded applications. Fonix technology
speaks standard XML (eXtensible Markup Language) Web text in any of six Western
languages; it also offers extensive user controls that enable it to adapt to a
variety of real-world environments. On the voice recognition side, Fonix has
developed a powerful solution in Fonix ASR, which is available in U.S. English,
U.K. English, French, German, and Swedish, and accommodates finite-state
grammar, allowing complex speech input.
"Working with Serotek on Freedom Box demonstrates how Fonix technologies play
out in yet another accessibility market," said Kurt Flygare, vice president of
sales for Fonix Corporation. "The natural sounding speech and near real-time
response of Fonix TTS is ideal for those with disabilities. What's more, our
status as the only provider of automatic speech recognition technology for
Freedom Box users is a tribute to the overall reliability and accuracy of Fonix
ASR."

Ok if you are real good this year santa will see what he can do LOL.
Thank you for all your help.
Wise
Well, heck! I'd like a new Ranger today, Dad! <g>
I've restored the iBox and it checks out fine.
Would you please remove me from the Board of Directors for this board now? Looks like I'm done testing.
Sorry I was gone to help my son buy a new truck and it took all afternoon to get it done.
Wise
I don't think it's either of those scenarios. I know it's not the first, because the links are built by the webserver, not the SQL Server. Once the raw data is fetched, the webserver builds the display, which includes the links.
What I'm suspecting most is the lack of a hard-coded encoding directive allowed some browsers to get tricked/confused by some of the bytes that're flying through it.
Yes, I also think we're ready for the original message to get put back in. Since he's apparently not around but I am, I'll go ahead and do it in a bit.
Hi Bob, Every link in the message is working! All links on the Board are working. Here are some thoughts.
A. For some reason the links between the webserver and the SQL server got messed up for this board only. And now that you have removed the mesages and restored them the links have been restored. so you worn't see this problem again.
B.Could it have been a virus? I understand there are new virus out there that can go from my computer to your server, then to whoever veiws the webpage. If I understand it correctly. I think one virus of this type was called RED CODE.
I think in troubleshooting this thing, we are ready for the COB to put the data back in the Iframe.
Could you try pasting your iBox contents back in? My earlier post was an exact copy.
The site wasn't using a hard-coded content type but I just changed that and want to see if the earlier problem crops back up.
Ok I am running windows98se with IE 6.0 so I will keep a check on it as well.
Wise
In the post to which I was replying, you'd noted that the post wasn't causing problems for you. You asked about the problem in a later post, and I replied appropriately to that one. <g>
I haven't determined yet exactly what's causing the problem. Something about the original contents of the iBox. That's as far as I've been able to narrow it down so far.
I don't have the foggiest notion (yet) what part of the contents (and, subsequently, my flaw in processing those contents) actually causes the problem.
Since I can't make the problem happen for me, I'm having to coordinate with others for testing.
Although it just occurred to me that I've got an old laptop here running Windoze98. I'll see if it happens on that machine.
It'll be hard to put it simple or non-technical, but I'll try.
Seems that certain browsers (Internet Explore 6 running on Windoze 98 was one that was identified), when they'd see the iBox, would "translate" all of the "?", "_" and "=" characters in the links to something else entirely.
For example,
http://www.investorshub.com/boards/post_reply.asp?message_id=318185
would be converted to something like
http://www.investorshub.com/boards/post+AF8-reply.asp%20message+AF8-id+AD0-318185
Through the process of elimination, I determined that the problem had to do with the contents of the iBox and how I'm processing it before delivering it to the user.
When I can coordinate with one of the folks who had a problem, and hear back from them on my test message, I'll put the contents back into the iBox and bang on the code until I find and fix the culprit.
That is what I am asking what the problem was for these folks ?
If it is something I am doing in the Ibox as a link then I will know what to do on my other boards so this will not happen anymore.
Just trying to help out.
Wise
The problem won't hit you or me. There were other users having the problem. At least 4 of them that I know of.
What was the problem ?
Wise
All seems to be working just fine and the link to FONX is also working.
Wise
Go to http://www.investorshub.com/boards/read_msg.asp?message_id=318173 and see if the problem resurfaces.

There's no way you would've known. The problem wasn't happening for everyone (it wasn't happening for me, either), and, by definition, folks who were having the problem couldn't let you know they were having a problem.
I've saved the contents of the iBox and will put them back in when I can coordinate a testing effort with some folks who were having the problem.
In the meantime, you might want to put in an abbreviated version of the contents and leave out links and phone numbers, as they're the most likely culprits.
It just occurred to me that it would be an interesting test if I post the original contents here in a message and see if anyone who had the problem earlier has the same problem when they encounter the message.
That'll be my next post. Any of you who had a problem with this board before, let me know if you have the same problem when viewing my next post.
I did not know there was a problem with the board.
No one has said a word to me about this problem.
When I put all the information in the Ibox it all worked just fine as I tested each link.
Please let me know what we need to do now to get the information back in the Ibox.
Thank You
Wise
Hi Bob, looks like you have it working again! Before coming to the site I did a security update to windows IE6. I don't think that had anything to do with it though. After that patch was installed, I went to tools/internet Options/Privacy and set it for High. Now no cookie can come on to this computer unless I say yes. Which I did do for this website. Anyway It looks like removing and replacing the Messages did the trick.
We have now started a new board to talk about any stocks you have.
http://www.investorshub.com/boards/board.asp?board_id=1056
Wise
I've temporarily removed the contents of this board's iBox to see if that cleared the problem with people being able to go to this board but not click any links within it. I've saved the iBox so I can put it back in.
If anyone who was previously having problems using this board is now able to, please reply to this post to let me know if the problem has cleared.

Johannesburg, Mar 22, 2002 (ITWeb/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- Unisys
has signed a value added reseller (VAR) agreement with Fonix Corporation, a
provider of natural-user interface technology used to support wireless and
mobile devices and telephony systems, to resell Fonix text-to-speech (TTS)
software in the local market.
The company plans to integrate Fonix TTS software into its service creation
environment to develop high quality speech-enabled applications such as voice
activated dialling, voice portals and unified messaging.
TTS software is used for the creation of voice and speech solutions which allow
callers to gain access to information residing on the Web, such as a stock
quote, weather, or news that is now voice-enabled.
"The reason people like voice-response phone services where the computer can
actually talk to them and they can talk back is instant information, whether
it's a stock quote or a mortgage rate," says Dean Baker, sales manager,
telecommunications at Unisys Africa. "That is precisely what Unisys and Fonix
want to offer to callers or customers."
Unisys provides comprehensive solutions from business analysis and strategy
formulation to turnkey delivery of speech-enabled solutions. It combines its
strength in telephony platforms with core competency in speech-centric
applications, complemented with professional consulting services, to empower
value-added service providers with speech technologies.
Says Baker: "One of the planned targeted uses is Unisys voice portal solution.
Callers will now be able to request information residing on the Web, such as a
stock quote, and hear the response, which will be read back to the caller in the
Fonix voice.
"Integration into our speech offerings provides the natural-sounding TTS from
Fonix with increased exposure in the worldwide voice portal market," says Baker.
"Fonix's multiple language TTS integrates easily into a wide range of products
and solutions, providing users with a highly scalable and reliable option for
voice."

STAY LOW BE NIMBLE AND SHOOT QUICK
SALT LAKE CITY, Mar 13, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Fonix(R)
Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: FONX), the leading provider of natural-user
interface technology and voice solutions for wireless and mobile devices,
announced today it has signed a licensing agreement with Microsoft(R) (Nasdaq:
MSFT) to provide the Fonix proprietary Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) engine
for the immensely popular Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft.
Beginning in the second half of 2002, the highly-accurate Fonix U.S. English ASR
for game developers will begin shipping to all Xbox game developers via the
official Xbox Development Kit (XDK), Microsoft's primary game authoring tool.
During the remainder of 2002, Fonix will provide ASR for Xbox in the following
languages: U.K. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.
The Fonix-enabled XDK will allow developers to create games that recognize the
user's voice, permitting the user to direct on-screen action, input information,
and otherwise interact verbally with the game environment.
"With the powerful technology behind Xbox, artists are able to attain their
creative goals and realize their creative visions," said J Allard, General
Manager, Xbox Platform, Microsoft. "Fonix voice recognition will play a
significant role in future Xbox game development, making the games more
interactive and user friendly."
"This announcement further demonstrates the expanding commercialization of Fonix
ASR," said Kurt Flygare, vice president of sales for Fonix. "Xbox is clearly one
of the most prominent and influential entertainment technology platforms in the
world today. Potentially, millions of users will have the opportunity to
experience the power of Fonix as a result of this agreement.
"By becoming the speech recognition provider for Xbox, Fonix has once again
proven it is on the cutting edge of natural-user interface technology," Flygare
noted.
Fonix ASR powerfully discerns speech in multiple languages at normal speeds and
intonations. The solution is speaker-independent and does not require training
to the user's voice. It also accommodates finite-state grammar, which allows for
complex speech input, and can detect speech in high background-noise
environments. Among the key benefits of Fonix ASR technology for Xbox developers
is a remarkably small footprint command-and-control engine that drives all
onboard speech recognition functions. Fonix is also offering game developers two
additional upgrades to the Microsoft XDK components: natural-sounding
Text-To-Speech (TTS) technology, which enables game characters to read
on-the-fly text in a variety of languages and dialects, and Fonix Professional
Services to provide help with speech integration and support. These upgrades are
available to game developers immediately.
Entry of voice commands into the Xbox video game system will take place via a
microphone/headphone combo set such as the Xbox Communicator, which is unique
among video game consoles in that it plugs right into a slot on the controller,
and will be available as an optional peripheral for Xbox.
Fonix ASR and TTS technologies are used by a number of major manufacturers and
technology providers around the world including Compaq, Mitsubishi, Motorola,
Samsung, Seiko Epson, and Unisys. For a full explanation of Fonix and its voice
interface technologies, visit www.fonix.com . For more information about Xbox,

now available in North America and Japan, and will ship in Europe and Australia
on March 14, 2002.
