This sounds useful: Barracuda Spam Firewall Moves Beyond Traditional Reputation Analysis With Predictive Sender Profiling
Last update: 4/17/2007 9:01:19 AM
Behavioral Profiling of Spammers Thwarts Growing Attempts to Obfuscate Spammer Identities
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Apr 17, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Barracuda Networks, Inc., the leading provider of application security appliances, today announced the Predictive Sender Profiling capabilities of the Barracuda Spam Firewall. These capabilities provide industry-leading protection against spammers' latest attempts to evade traditional reputation analysis. Utilizing a network of more than 40,000 customer systems worldwide, Barracuda Networks has the most diverse compilation of email available for profiling the behavior of spammers. Using this data enables the Barracuda Spam Firewall to more easily determine a sender's identity when identity obfuscation techniques are used. "While 2006 marked the beginning of an assault on image spam, 2007 is marking yet another trend through spammer identity obfuscation," said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management for Barracuda Networks. "Taking an analogy from the financial industry, where reputation analysis is like a FICO score, identity obfuscation, like identity theft, requires profiling against anomalous behavior." "Reputation is a computationally efficient way to profile spam," said Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research. "However, we have observed that spoofing, botnets, and other means of hiding behind the reputation of another sender have made this technique less effective than it might otherwise be. As a result, while we believe reputation is very important, other spam prevention techniques that profile sender behavior will be very important moving forward." Predictive Sender Profiling Modern spam trends require reputation data be augmented with behavioral profiling techniques. For example, by taking control of networks of computers infected with malware (also called "botnets"), spammers can send email from diverse sources throughout the Internet, thus hiding their own identity from traditional reputation checks that profile sender network addresses. By registering new domains or by redirecting to spam Web domains through reputable blogs, free Web site providers, or URL redirection services, spammers have also learned to hide their identity from traditional reputation checks that profile spam Web domains. When spammers obfuscate their identities, the Barracuda Spam Firewall can profile behaviors of all senders. Examples include: -- Sending too many emails from a single network address. The Barracuda Spam Firewall prevents spamming behavior from an email server even when it does not have a previously established reputation for doing so. -- Attempting to send to too many invalid recipients. The Barracuda Spam Firewall automatically rejects SMTP connection attempts from email senders that attempt to send to too many invalid recipients, a behavior indicative of directory harvest or dictionary attacks. -- Sending email blasts on the first day after registering a domain. Barracuda Central maintains domain reputations and automatically adds newly registered domains to Intent Analysis databases. -- Using free Internet services to redirect to known spam domains. Barracuda Spam Firewalls with Multilevel Intent Analysis enabled, automatically follow URL redirections from free Internet services and analyze the reputation of the destination Web sites and their associated DNS configurations. "As identity obfuscation continues to proliferate, the stand-alone value of reputation data diminishes," said Pao. "Through Predictive Sender Profiling, we are able to recognize bad sender behavior and implement a broad variety of countermeasures in real-time. With six of the 12 comprehensive defense layers tunable through updates delivered by Barracuda Central, our engineers have the broadest set of weapons available to stop the spam. Combining this set of weapons with the industry's most diverse and active compilation of email, Barracuda Networks can deliver industry-leading spam accuracy even as the spam landscape continues to evolve." "We have been using our Barracuda Spam Firewall since early 2005, and I can't imagine ever being without it," said Jacob Nyhart, network engineer for South Carolina Heart Center. "While spam trends keep changing, our Barracuda Spam Firewall seems to catch them right away and has continued to effectively block more than 98 percent of incoming spam here at SCHC. We appreciate that Barracuda Central is profiling spammer behavior so that we don't have to." Barracuda Spam Firewall Reputation Analysis While the standalone value of reputation data is diminishing, it remains an important baseline for sender profiling. For reputation analysis, the Barracuda Spam Firewall leverages data on both network addresses used to send email and domain names embedded in the Web links of emails gathered by Barracuda Central, an advanced technology operations center where engineers continually monitor the Internet for trends in spam and virus attacks. Both the IP and reputation data combined, enables Barracuda Networks to implement countermeasures to mitigate those threats. For network addresses used to send email, Barracuda Spam Firewalls download two lists used in its IP Analysis defense layer -- a Block list ("blacklist") of known spammers and an Allow list ("whitelist") of known senders with good email practices. With these lists, Barracuda Spam Firewalls can efficiently differentiate those emails to be blocked or allowed with minimal processing. Other network addresses in the "grey area" are left for further analysis through nine subsequent spam and virus defense layers. Domains embedded in Web links of emails are analyzed through the Intent Analysis defense layer of the Barracuda Spam Firewall. Intent Analysis is designed to capture the call to action of a spam email -- to click on a Web link, call a phone number, or reply to an email. Even when the network origin of an email cannot be identified, the intent of the email can often reveal the identity of the sender. Barracuda Central maintains the reputation of Internet domains and their associated Domain Name Server (DNS) configuration. "As a baseline for Predictive Sender Profiling, Barracuda Networks remains committed to delivering state-of-the-art reputation data," continued Pao. "With email sourced from our spam traps throughout the Internet, as well as submissions from thousands of customer systems worldwide spanning small and medium businesses, enterprises, government institutions, and Internet Service Providers across over 80 countries, Barracuda Central has the world's most diverse corpus of email on which to base reputation data." Pricing and Availability The Barracuda Spam Firewall Reputation Analysis and Predictive Sender Profiling capabilities are immediately available with Barracuda Spam Firewall firmware releases 3.4.10.100 and 3.4.11.200. All Barracuda Spam Firewall customers with current Energize Updates subscriptions may upgrade to the latest firmware releases at no additional charge. For new customers, Reputation Analysis and Predictive Sender Profiling will be included out of the box. Barracuda Spam Firewall pricing varies by model and starts at $1,499 in the U.S. with no per user licensing fees. International pricing varies by region. About the Barracuda Spam Firewall The Barracuda Spam Firewall is available in six models and supports from 1,000 to 30,000 active users with no per user licensing fees. Its architecture leverages 12 defense layers: denial of service and security protection, rate control, IP analysis, sender authentication, recipient verification, virus protection, policy (user-specified rules), Fingerprint Analysis, Intent Analysis, Image Analysis, Bayesian Analysis, and a Spam Rules Scoring engine. In addition, the entire Barracuda Spam Firewall line features simultaneous inbound and outbound email filtering with the inclusion of sophisticated outbound email filtering techniques, such as rate controls, domain restrictions, user authentication (SASL), keyword and attachment blocking, dual layer virus blocking, and remote user support for outbound email filtering. The Barracuda Spam Firewall's layered approach minimizes the processing of each email, which yields the performance required to process millions of messages per day. Lmao. That is a scam of scams. All they wil do is set up a huge series of wash trades and then send the company a bill. When the trades are unwound, the stock will collapse as it always does when such programs are used in the microcap markets

Hi there! stock owner,
We are a stock furtherance company and we can encourage any kind of stocks. We have been working on US market of shares for 3 years. But this time it is difficult to work on US market. We are in search of grave partners in Europe with whom we can make business together. That suggestion is for you if you have a company and you want to promote it. We encourage stocks by pile email advertising.
Stock owner
We can increase the cost of your SHARE and we can increase average day trading volume. We can increase price up to 200-255% in 2 weeks and also we can increase volume by 10 times each trading day. You don`t have to pay anything in beforehand. First we increase the price and the volume, then you pay.
Payment: Our cost for that is 10% from the daily volume. We calculate it by the following formula: last price * daily volume.
If you are interested in our suggestion please write me back to the following email: stockadvert01@yahoo.com

Let's see how many spam emails hat Spamnation managed to trap of the 35 pink sheet stocks halted today -- this is an all-time count for each security -- and bear in mind, this is one guy with a few email accounts trapping spam and reporting counts:
http://www.spamnation.info/stocks/StocksByYear.php?year=2006
Spam-advertised stocks
... Note that the total column is a count of all spams received advertising the company, not a count of spams received during 2007 (alone)...
It looks to me like a spotty spam list from 2006, not 2007, which is yet more proof that the SEC moves rather slowly on these cases -- and four of the stocks they halted -- the Spamnation guy did not even trap a spam email for them:

UPDATE: SEC Stops Trading In 35 Cos Linked To Email Stk Spam
Last update: 3/8/2007 12:45:32 PM
(Updates throughout with details, SEC comment)
By Judith Burns
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--The Securities and Exchange Commission halted trading in 35 companies Thursday as it stepped up efforts to protect investors from market manipulators who use email "spam" to hype investments in tiny microcap companies.
"Operation Spamalot" will target an estimated 100 million spam messages sent each week, the SEC announced. Its chairman, Christopher Cox, said the operation will crack down on emailed invitations urging investors to "ride the bull" or make "fast money."
The SEC's announcement followed the halt in trading of shares in 35 Pink Sheet companies said to be featured in repeated spam campaigns. The SEC cited questions about the adequacy and accuracy of information about the companies.
Spam messages can trigger sudden rises in stock prices and trading activity, but the stocks can plunge when the perpetrators sell their shares and stop the spamming, causing investors to lose their money, Cox said at a press conference here. Mark Schonfeld, head of the SEC's New York office, estimated that investors have lost tens of millions of dollars in the past year alone on the 35 stocks subject to the trading halt. SEC officials have long recommended deleting such messages.
Under the new push, the agency is warning investors to steer clear of such stock tips and plans to take aggressive steps to curb the spamming. More trading halts and lawsuits targeting promoters are likely, agency officials said. "There will be actions to follow," Cox promised.
The 10-day trading suspensions will run through March 21, and affect the following 35 companies: Advanced Powerline Technologies Inc. (APWL), America Asia Petroleum Corp. (AAPM), Amerossi International Group, Inc. (AMSN), Apparel Manufacturing Associates, Inc. (APPM), Asgard Holdings Inc. (AGHG), Biogenerics Ltd. (BIGN), China Gold Corp. Three of those are "portfolio companies" of GDVM. GDVM has launched three of their "portfolio companies" in the past 4 months.--WHKA, PSUD and BLRS.
All of them have received spam complaints. BLRS is the most recent, and two of them, PSUD and WHKA are older and have had their quotes suspended at pinksheets.com.
WHKA is now saying they are going to sue GDVM over this mess.
All of the spams obviously authorized by GDVM are exactly the same JPEG image type spams with half a page of a novel attached to them.
GDVM not only is a group of crooks who print illegal shares, they are illegal spammers as well.
Spam Works: Evidence from Stock Touts and Corresponding Market Activity

Oxford Legal Studies Research Paper No. 43/2006
Berkman Center Research Publication No. 2006-11
Abstract:
We assess the impact of spam that touts stocks upon the trading activity of those stocks and sketch how profitable such spamming might be for spammers and how harmful it is to those who heed advice in stock-touting e-mails. We find convincing evidence that stock prices are being successfully manipulated through spam. We suggest that the effectiveness of spammed stock touting calls into question prevailing models of securities regulation that rely principally on the proper labeling of information and disclosure of conflicts of interest to protect consumers, and we propose several regulatory and industry interventions.
Based on a large sample of touted stocks listed on the Pink Sheets quotation system, we find that stocks experience a significantly positive return on days prior to heavy touting via spam. Volume of trading responds positively and significantly to heavy touting. For a stock that is touted at some point during our sample period, the probability of it being the most actively traded stock in our sample jumps from 4% on a day when there is no touting activity to 70% on a day when there is touting activity. Returns in the days following touting are significantly negative.
The evidence accords with a hypothesis that spammers “buy low and spam high,” purchasing penny stocks with comparatively low liquidity, then touting them - perhaps immediately after an independently occurring upward tick in price, or after having caused the uptick themselves by engaging in preparatory purchasing - in order to increase or maintain trading activity and price enough to unload their positions at a profit. Selling by the spammer then results in negative returns following touting. Before brokerage fees, the average investor who buys a stock on the day it is most heavily touted and sells it 2 days after the touting ends will lose approximately 5.5%. For the top half of most thoroughly touted stocks, a spammer who buys at the ask price on the day before unleashing touts and sells at the bid price on the day his or her touting is the heaviest will, on average, earn 5.79%.

Chi-Agra is the latest Viagra-type treatment to show up in junk e-mails, claiming to be a natural boost for males having problems in the bedroom. Its developer is a homegrown Vancouver company, BioLife Remedies Inc., which is listed on the pink sheets, home to many lively stocks.
Spammers started issuing e-mails on the product and the stock Wednesday, touting Chi-Agra as poised to enter a $6-billion market, but it appears dubious and could even be toxic in high doses.
Chi-Agra costs $39.99 for a one-month supply and is made from Epimedium, a herb grown in Europe and Asia, according to BioLife's website. Legend has it a Chinese goat herder noticed increased sexual activity in his flock after they ate some, which earned it the nickname horny goat weed.
Its uses are many, if one listens to backers of traditional Chinese medicine. Supposedly it can treat asthma, bronchitis, cervical dysplasia, congestive heart failure, leukorrhea, leukopenia and even viral infections of the heart, according to herbalists.
In spite of its purported array of uses, Epimedium does not appear to have earned much recognition in Western medicine. Animal studies have shown that it can be toxic to the liver and kidneys in high doses and can cause a loss of muscle co-ordination, according to the website About Alternative Medicine.
"There isn't enough information on horny goat weed to safely recommend it for erectile dysfunction," the site says. It cites separate studies by three researchers, including one published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.
A BioLife representative would not answer questions about the product. He advised checking the company's website, which addresses none of the concerns raised by About Alternative Medicine.
He denies the company has anything to do with the spam.
Just a month ago the company was called Emerson Oil & Gas Inc., an oil and gas junior that had nothing to do with herbal remedies. It was then touting a gas interest in Alberta. The stock went to 60 cents in 2004 as the company said commercial production from its properties could be around the corner.
It turned out generating revenue was harder than the company projected. "After a successful exploration and discovery ... the company has been informed by the operator that the decreased flow rates have gotten to a level that is now uneconomical," read a news release issued by the company's then president, David Harker, last September.
It appears Emerson never had any earnings or revenues. It only issued financial results once, in 2005, reporting an $11,000 (U.S.) loss. The stock fell to a three-cent low last month.
Now it has been reincarnated as a maker of herbal remedies, and is also Vancouver's newest spam stock.
The spam not only touts Chi-Agra, it tells readers to buy BioLife, which is "set to massive gains." The company sports a professional looking website, where surfers can read about the company's products, including its herbal help for men.
Its directors, Jack Guo and Terry Xie, do not appear to be known on Howe Street.
The company is one of several helping put Vancouver on the map as a major source of stock market spam. In a 2006 list of spam stocks compiled by the website Spamnation, B.C.-linked companies took nine of the top 10 spots.
The pink sheets website often refuses to display quotes for such companies, telling investors they can be the subject of fraudulent activity. It has not issued such a warning for BioLife.
BioLife gained 12 cents Friday, closing at 47 cents.

I started a thread on Allstocks where I was keeping track of e-mail Spams, but kinda let it fall by the wayside.
I literally get 100+ on some days. At some point my e-mail adress fell into the wrong hands, I guess.
I don't even want to get into how many "Viagara" spams I get a day... :)
Anyway, it looks like this board has been fairly dormant, but maybe I'll start posting once a day here with my spam list.

Have you ever thought about the similarities between pharmaceutical and
tobacco companies?
On average, those men showed a 75 percent decline in fertilizing
capacity when compared to nonsmokers. Then, consume them on a frequent
basis and before long, you will greatly increase your odds of being
diagnosed with cancer. It also seems to be taking the same political
strategy of denial by saying that any food can be part of a healthy
diet. Can you stay in her favor by bringing home the rarest of
treasures? This, in turn, could make it harder for a couple to conceive
and increase the risk of miscarriage, they said. Clinical trial
researchers, for their part, know that if they don't produce positive
results for the drug companies, they'll never find work in the industry
again. meaning that they reject any and all dice in the Commission pool
and will use one of their Officer dice instead, and this is the lowest
bid possible.
Today, I'm not aware of any such evidence, but knowing the history of
its parent company, I would not be at all surprised to see such evidence
surface in the years ahead.

All you have to do to get diagnosed with cancer is make sure your immune
system is sufficiently suppressed so that your body can't take care of
the cancerous cells on a regular basis.

Dr Doug Wright, clinical spokesman for Norwich Union Healthcare, said:
'The report clearly disproves the common misconception that women are

Both sides roll their Conflict dice and whoever gets the highest result
on one of their dice is the winner! If you put all of this together, you
see that physical exercise is extremely beneficial to the human body,
and in fact the body won't live nearly as long without it.

West Excelsior spam prompts warning by security firm

Internet security firm PandaLabs is warning of a new method used by stock spammers, one that employs technology that allows aggressive stock promoters to dodge spam filters. The new e-mails get past a server's defences by using colourful pictures with slight differences that apparently fool anti-spam measures.
The new e-mails come in massive waves not seen before, PandaLabs says. "I am afraid that we are going to get used to attacks of this type," warns PandaLabs' Sergio Pineiro in a message on the company's website.
While the source of this unique new spam is a mystery, it first appeared touting a Vancouver mining junior that trades on the pink sheets, West Excelsior Enterprises Inc. The company went from 95 cents to $1.14 on Nov. 13 as spammers predicted a $4 price. (All figures are in U.S. dollars.)
Similar e-mails have also appeared in recent days touting Voxbox World Telecom Inc., a pink sheets Internet phone company with a White Rock address.
PandaLabs, which does not purport to be an expert on the stock market, surmises the e-mails are the work of a less-than-reputable shareholder. "It is possible that the author has bought [shares] at low prices during the previous days, in order to sell them to unsuspicious users that are seeing the price rising, and feel confident that it is a good deal," Mr. Pineiro says.
West Excelsior's ex-president in another spam company
While West Excelsior disavows any knowledge of the spam ("We want to assure you that West Excelsior is not responsible," a recording on its voice mail says), the company appears to be connected to another recent Vancouver spam stock, junior miner Shallbetter Industries Inc.
Mark Glusing, West Excelsior's president when the spam began, is the investor relations person for Shallbetter. It is not clear if he has anything to do with the e-mail campaigns, and he has not returned calls.
He took control of West Excelsior last February, but resigned as president part way through its spam campaign. His departure was preceded by e-mails advising investors to wait for a big announcement, in similar fashion to past Shallbetter news releases.
"It's going to explode on Monday Nov 13th," the e-mails predicted, referring to the day West Excelsior appointed Mr. Glusing's replacement, Kotni Rao (apparently the former accountant for a cement company from India).
The sequence of events (spam, news release and stock rising -- in that order) was nearly identical to Shallbetter's appointment of former University of Victoria president Dr. David Strong as an adviser 10 days earlier. Shallbetter went to a $1.92 high on Nov. 3 after spammers predicted something big was about to happen. The company's volume was 4.5 million shares the day it announced Dr. Strong's appointment and said he would direct an exploration team. It has since come down to 66 cents on no news.
Like Shallbetter, West Excelsior appears to have few assets. The company's most recent balance sheet shows $3,211 in assets and $51,083 in liabilities as of June 30, 2006. It says it has a deal for a property in Mexico, but it has not yet done any drilling or outlined any resources.
Still, West Excelsior closed over $1 seven times in November. For example it closed Nov. 6 at $1.13 on volume of 2.1 million shares, when Mr. Glusing was still president. It closed at 70 cents Thursday.
Stocks can trade higher on the reputation of management alone, but Mr. Glusing does not appear to have any success stories in his resume. He was the president of Poker.com, an on-line gambling company that lost money during his tenure.
In 2003 he was president of Pan Asia Communications Inc., which lost $182,000 in fiscal 2003 and $616,000 in fiscal 2004, on no revenue. Now known as Amersin Life Sciences Corp., the company last traded for a penny. Mr. Glusing has not returned repeated calls.
The pink sheets website warns investors Shallbetter and West Excelsior could be pump-and-dumps. Those seeking a quote for either company get a cautionary message. "We encourage investors to use care and due diligence in their investment decisions, as mass spam campaigns are commonly used by unscrupulous promoters in 'pump and dump' schemes," it says.
Shallbetter's president, Bruce Pridmore, contacted last weekend in China, says he is aware of the problem but does not know what to do about it. "Mike, notwithstanding your obvious concerns about this company, it is largely a good and well-intentioned board. It has a bundle of problems which most of the board realize and want to clean up. They are however being thwarted in ways that I do not yet understand," he says.
He did not respond to a question about Mr. Glusing's past.
Meanwhile, the spam continues. "JUST ADD WEXE TO YOUR RADAR," advised repeated e-mail's touting West Excelsior on Thursday morning.
