Facebook update on Bruce from Sept 7th:
Karen Forsythe Thompson
September 7 at 3:51am
Hi Everyone, I want to give you an update on Bruce. He just completed the 4th round of 5 days on chemo 23 days off. The dose of chemo had to be lowered because his platelets had dropped again. But he tolerated the chemo better this time. I want to say a special hello to his friends in i-hub, the cards you are sending make a very big difference, thank you so much! His next MRI is the 18th of this month, that will show where we stand with this deadly cancer! He is repeating himself a lot and getting his words mixed up, but he still holds my hand when we watch TV, and most of the time there is a ready smile!! Come by and see him if you're in the area, or send a card. I'll post again after the MRI. Thanks for all your prayers we feel them!!

The truth about Windows 10 spying on almost everything you do
You've probably read this too, I'm just not in the avant - garde about this stuff.
http://blog.emsisoft.com/2015/09/02/the-truth-about-windows-10-spying-on-almost-everything-you-do/
Thanks for bringing that, but that was a re-posted piece from Microsoft itself. I saw that in the microsoft site some time ago. Techspot was probably paid for that.
But it might be new to some.
Is microsoft letting home users turn off auto updating yet. That is still a deal breaker for many home users.
Top 10 Hidden Windows 10 Features
- TechSpot
Anyone that’s been using Windows 10 for a few weeks now will realize just how massive of an update the operating system is. Microsoft has made a concerted effort to right the wrongs of Windows 8, bringing back features like the Start menu, while simultaneously adding in great functionality like Cortana, Continuum for tablets, and Task View.
Many of Windows 10’s key features have been talked about at length, but the operating system actually comes with a lot of great features that aren’t as immediately obvious to everyday users and even enthusiasts. These features don’t get the attention that they should, so without further ado, let’s get on with the top 10 hidden features of Windows 10.

Thirty-day Win10 experiment lasts only a week
It was intended as a month-long immersion in Windows 10 and a test of using the new OS on a hybrid laptop.
But the experiment ended after just seven days. It turned out that upgrading a hybrid laptop/tablet was a trial of BSoDs and compatibility issues.
Duplicating last year’s experiment with Win8.1 (see the April 3, 2014, Best Practices article; paid content), I upgraded the small laptop/tablet hybrid (laplet) to Windows 10, planning to spend a month using it in place of both my main Win7 system and my iPad.
The ASUS Transformer Book T100 (more info) might just be the lightest, cheapest, and least powerful PC ever designed to run Windows 8. Without its detachable keyboard, it weighs only 1.4 pounds — or 2.4 pounds with the keyboard. It has only 2GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, and a relatively low-power 64-bit, 1.33GHz Atom Z3740 processor. It came with the original Win8 x32 but was later upgraded to Win8.1. Now it would run 32-bit Windows 10.
When using the T100 as a desktop PC, I connect it to a Plugable UD-3900 Dual Display Universal Docking Station (site), which in turn connects to an external monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, speakers, and an external drive for more storage.
Part of the 30-day plan was to use the T100 as my mobile-computing device on an upcoming vacation. No, I wouldn’t use it for work — just personal email, social networking, and reading.

That Windows 10 update message could be ransomware in disguise.
(Take email precautions like ever)

Don, thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions - helped a lot!
I find this...
Additional restore question:
This warning was also in the link:
Correct, you have to get the machine running with the install disk to be able to access the restore function...
Thx Don.
From the link it appears that a drive with a functioning operating system
is required before you can use Windows Recovery Control panel to restore a system image.
Go here...
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/restore-computer-from-system-image-backup#1TC=windows-7
You want this option: Restore from windows installation disk.
Installing a new SSD drive questions:
Is it possible (or advisable) to use a Windows System Image and Back-up
from an external HD to load the operating system to the new SSD?
OR
Do I need to load the operating sysyem from my valid Win 7 Sp 1 64-bit CD/DVD first
then do all the Updates and then use Windows to reload all the backed up settings/files/folders from the external HD?
My old HHD failed and won't boot even into safe mode. I am planning on installing a new Crucial SSD.
The old HHD had Win 7 Sp 1 64-bit - I had just done a complete Windows Back-up including a System Image...
Hopefully I'll only lose the stuff that was added in the few days before the HD crashed.
I do not visit IHUB much but am very sorry to hear of your troubles Bruce. I wish you and your family well. Fight the good fight.

Bruce's wife, Karen, posted this on FB August 5th.
"Bruce has finished another round of chemo. This was a tough one.The dose had been increased so it was hard on him. He had his words really messed up, so it was hard to know what he was talking about sometimes. Mostly he slept a lot. If you live close, please visit, it makes him be more aware and engaged, otherwise he just sits a lot! If you can't visit , please send a note or card, they help a lot too. PO Box 333 Trenton, FL 32693. If you can't come by or send a card please pray for us. This is wicked stage 4 terminal brain cancer, and the fight is hard!"

I opened and ran the update blocking program a few times...
And I can't figure out what it's good for, or not...
It doesn't stop W10 from updating itself...
Good to stop driver updates only?...
Nice to hear form you!
Here's a program that will add colors to W10 title bars...
For those of you who don't feel comfortable editing the Windows Folder...
http://www.windowscentral.com/replace-those-white-title-bars-windows-10-colors-theme
Thanks for all your notes on W10. I haven't had a problem (yet) with uodates. Did you stop the automatic update feature? If the uodate causes a problem, what difference would it make if it's an automatic update or a manual update....the update is still flawed either way. ?
Microsoft releases tool to block Windows 10 updates:
http://www.ghacks.net/2015/07/27/microsoft-releases-tool-to-block-windows-10-updates
If you want colored title bars in W10 windows...
Here's the best video I found on the subject...Worked for me!
I watched lots of videos and read websites last night...
They all gave very similar instructions...
But this guy explains it best...IMO
W10 now installed on one of my spare HD's...
Installation went very smooth and quickly...
I'm shocked how good it is for the most part!...
It's freakin' FAST!...Every program seems to be so...
Only a few little things bugged me at first...Two very easy to fix...
Videos play much better on Facebook...Half wouldn't play at all on W7...
Hated the Search box on the Task Bar...Right click on it, go to Search, and click Hide...Poof!...Gone...
Snipping Tool used to open when clicked...Now I have to click once to open, and again to use it!...Minor annoyance at best...
The one thing I HATE is the white Title Bar on all Windows apps!...Did a lot of research, and tried and tried to edit the aero files with no luck...I can barely see the minus sign to Minimize one of those windows...I'll try the rest of the ideas peeps have, but most involve editing files in the Windows Folder on C:
On a scale of one to ten, I'll rate W10 as a surprisingly Strong 8 - 8.5
Just ran across this site any one have any thought on it

Distributed Platform Overview
MaidSafe consists of two key parts: the network and the client applications. The network is under active development and aims to be released during 2015 (but for the time being is available for compilation from source via github.com). Example applications will be made available throughout this time to teach developers how to use the SAFE API and to enable them to build their own applications.
Hi Bruce...
very nice to hear from you. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

P.S. Still gratefully cruising on AppleRiver.
Great to hear from you Bruce! Thanks for this board! It's been invaluable to me and many others. I could not have built my Terminators without your help.
Bruce, great to see you posting whatever and when ever you can.
You may not realize how many lives you touch on these types of websites.
It would take a handful of people to fill the hole your condition has created.
But I'm sure everyone will give it a try.
May you get well one day at a time.
What good news! I wish you all the best and a complete recovery.
Cheers, PW.
Great to hear from you Bruce,
pssst,
have you seen Gold? Better hurry back!
So good to hear from you, Bruce. You sound just wonderful despite everything you've been through. We have all been sending our prayers your way and while we realize your battle is far from over, we are all pulling for your complete recovery. As to designing new computers, I think many, like me, are following your example and simply moving to laptops as our primary machines in conjunction with docking stations. I so enjoyed building my Linus to your specs, and it is still humming along though getting a bit long in the tooth, and maxed out as far as upgrades go.
You keep hanging tough, Bruce, and we will keep sending our prayers your way. We all miss ya.
Newly
Fantastic to hear from you. Your health is the most important thing at this time so don't worry about computer advise or computer builds.
Bruce- Great to hear from you. You have a whole family on the internet rooting for you. Thank you for the update.
Hi Bruce...you are really missed around here and it's great to see your post today. Lots of prayers being said on your behalf. Take care and God bless you...
ciciagt
Bruce- you and yours in my thoughts, it will take more than one volunteer to design and give advice!
IHUB and friends need you back. Get well and then get back.

Sorry to hear you have not been well Bruce. You have helped me many times over the years - you are a good guy!
Good to hear from you Bruce, our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Great to see you post! If u get time check your pm's.
Great to hear from you Bruce!
Thanks! for the many things you've taught me over the years...
You're in our prayers every day, and we hope you make a full recovery!...
Hey Bruce, So glad to see your post. Please drop by even to say hello and know that we are thinking of you.
Dan
" Ohhh Bruce ~ Thank you for the update & WE ALL miss ya .. !!
No one can replace you Bruce. YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!
I wish to thank every one fr following me up
I have now suffered two brain surgeries and have lots of vacant think holes to deal with.
That being said, it is time for someone to volunteer for the advice and also volunteer for the design of new machines.
Thank everyone for corresponding with me.
Yes thanks Dan, one is required to purchase the paid version to download files, perhaps I will. I downloaded DSpeech v1.62 but haven't figgured out how to save wav files on it yet. http://d2061412.instant.xoom.it/dspeech.html
Now that AT&T has closed their Text-to-Speech downloadable .wav file generating website I am having trouble finding a replacement, any replacement suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The site performed a very useful service. One could enter text in a box and then convert it to a .wav file (in a number of different voices) which was downloadable.
Hey, thanks for the link. I didn't realize he was still around, it has been years. . .
Newly
Cool - I still visit Black Viper too.
Yes, I noticed that last time, too. Used to have to go in and manually delete the older version.
Newly
Yes, I'm constantly fooling with Services as well. Amazing how many things running in the background one can disable and take the load off the CPU without disrupting your computing. Years ago there was a guy named Black Viper that published a list of what you could disable and what was essential. Don't know if he is still around or not. I don't think I have much running on Auto anymore, mostly Disabled and Manual.
