Cray Inc. Reports Strong Second Quarter 2012 Results

SEATTLE, WA, Jul 31, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (CRAY, Trade ) today announced financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2012. Revenue for the quarter was $84.2 million compared to $67.9 million in the prior year period. The Company reported net income for the quarter of $147.4 million or $3.91 diluted income per share compared to a net loss of ($3.0 million) or ($0.08) per share in the second quarter of 2011. The second quarter of 2012 operating results included a $139.1 million pre-tax gain, which resulted from the sale of the Company's interconnect hardware development program to Intel Corporation.

Revenue for the six-month period ended June 30, 2012 was $196.5 million compared with $107.8 million in the prior year period. Net income was $152.4 million or $4.12 diluted income per share for the first half of 2012 compared to a net loss of ($4.4 million) or ($0.13) per share in the prior year period. Operating income for the first six months of 2012, excluding the $139.1 million pre-tax gain from the asset sale to Intel, was $20.8 million.

The first half of 2012 results included non-cash items of $4.0 million for depreciation and amortization and $2.4 million related to stock compensation expense.

Total gross profit margin for the second quarter of 2012 was 41% compared to 38% for the second quarter of 2011. For the second quarter of 2012, product margin was 42% and service margin was 35%.

Operating expenses for the second quarter of 2012 were $22.1 million compared to $28.7 million in the prior year period. The Company's second quarter and first half of 2012 results were impacted by higher accrued incentive-based compensation due to strong operating results, as well as increased spending toward our growth initiatives compared to 2011. Second quarter of 2012 operating expenses benefited from $15 million in R&D co-funding credits related to the Company's DARPA contract. The second quarter of 2012 results also included non-cash items of $2.1 million for depreciation and amortization and $1.2 million for stock compensation expense.

Cray's effective tax rate for the first half of the year was 5% and benefited from the recognition of a capital loss and the partial release of a valuation allowance provided against deferred tax assets. The deferred tax asset balance primarily resulted from net operating loss carryforwards that were generated in previous periods.

As of June 30, 2012, cash balances totaled $223 million compared to $112 million as of March 31, 2012. Working capital increased by $168 million during the second quarter to $315 million as of June 30, 2012.

"We had a very strong quarter, led by the acceptance of our first petaflops system at a large commercial customer and the completion of a $140 million asset sale," said Peter Ungaro, president and CEO of Cray. "During the first half of the year, we made good progress on each of our three growth initiatives while also delivering strong operating results. We were recently awarded a number of exciting new wins for our next-generation supercomputer, called 'Cascade', which is planned for general availability next year. We have a lot of work left to do in order to achieve our outlook for this year, but our business is in excellent shape as we continue to build on our strong market position now and into the future."

2012 Outlook

A wide range of results remains possible for 2012. While many variables may impact our results, one significant item is the timing of a single planned customer acceptance, which would represent approximately $150 million in product revenue. This is the largest system we have ever built and its acceptance is dependent on several items, including third-party components, all on a tight timeline due to previous delays. Assuming acceptance of this system occurs in 2012, as currently planned, we continue to anticipate total revenue to be in the range of $430-$450 million for the year.

Revenue in the third quarter of 2012 is expected to be about $30 million. For the year, overall gross margins are anticipated to be in the 35 percent range and total operating expenses are expected to be about $120 million. Based on this outlook, we expect to be solidly profitable for 2012, independent of the $139 million pre-tax gain on the sale of our interconnect hardware development program that occurred during the second quarter.

The Company's 2012 effective income tax rate is currently projected to be about 5-8% but is dependent on a number of variables.

Actual results for any future period are subject to large fluctuations given the nature of Cray's business.

Recent Highlights


-- In July, Cray announced it was awarded a contract to deliver a
next-generation Cray supercomputer, code-named "Cascade", and a
next-generation Cray Sonexion storage system to the Pawsey Centre in
Perth, Australia. The contract is valued at more than $21 million.


-- In July, Cray announced it was awarded a contract to provide the
Finnish IT Center for Science with a "Cascade" supercomputer.
Consisting of product and services, the multi-year, multi-phase
contract is valued at more than $12 million, and a vast majority of
the system is expected to be delivered in 2014.


-- In June, Cray announced it will install a "Cascade" system and a
next-generation Cray Sonexion storage system at the Department of
Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC).
The multi-year, multi-phase procurement is valued at more than $40
million.


-- In June, Cray announced that its "Cascade" systems will be available
with Intel's new Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. The Intel Xeon Phi
product family is based on Intel's Many Integrated Core architecture,
which is designed for highly parallel workloads.


-- In June, as part of Cray's technical enterprise/midrange growth
initiative, Cray announced it was awarded a new contract by the
Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program
to deliver a new Cray XE6m supercomputer to the Naval Research
Laboratory in Monterey, California. The initial system contract is
valued at more than $16 million in product revenue. The contract also
calls for Cray to significantly upgrade the program's three existing
Cray XE6 supercomputers.


-- In June, Cray's YarcData subsidiary launched a $100,000 Graph
Analytics Challenge. The contest is designed to showcase the
increasing applicability and adoption of graph analytics in solving
Big Data problems.


-- During the second quarter, Cray delivered and received acceptance on
Cray Sonexion 1300 storage subsystems in the energy, government and
academic market segments. Cray has now shipped over 50 petabytes of
storage capacity in 2012.


-- During the second quarter, Cray completed two different development
milestones totaling $15 million in R&D credits for its Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) contract related to the
development of its next-generation "Cascade" supercomputer.

Cray (CRAY) today reported Q1 earnings of $0.13 per share, versus the Capital IQ consensus of $0.03. Revenues were $112.3 mln, versus the analysts' estimate of $99 mln.

The company expects Q2 revenues of about $85 mln versus the Capital IQ consensus of $54 mln. It also raised its guidance for FY12, and now expects revenues of $430 mln - $450 mln, up from the prior outlook of $400 mln - $420 mln. Analysts are looking for revenues of $404.17 mln.

ARLINGTON, Va.–Computer scientists at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va., are asking industry for new high-performance computing technologies that could enable so-called extreme scale computing: the notion of exceeding today's petascale computing to achieve one quintillion (1,000,000,000,000,000,000) calculations per second.

DARPA released a broad agency announcement (DARPA-BAA-10-78) for the Omnipresent High Performance Computing (OHPC) program to help develop tomorrow's high-performance computers to meet the relentlessly increasing demands for greater performance, higher energy efficiency, ease of programmability, dependability, and security in aerospace and defense computing for military sensors, platforms, and missions.

The DARPA OHPC program is to provide new computer technologies for a similar DARPA initiative called the Ubiquitous High Performance Computing (UHPC) program to develop new classes of high-performance computing, from embedded computing to cabinet computing, with dramatically reduced power consumption while delivering a thousand-fold increase in processing capabilities. The UHPC program, under consideration now, is to develop adaptable and hardened cyber resilient computer systems that will not require significant system expertise.

The DARPA OHPC program seeks to speed-up the UHPC initiative with new research aimed at extreme scale computing, which also is known as exascale computing, and will develop technologies will be integrated into one or more UHPC systems.

Topics of interest in the OHPC program include software that not only reduces requirements for high-performance computing, including memory and storage, but also that enables programmability to reduce the need for users to understand complex system aspects like heterogeneous cores and memory hierarchy; hardware and software for managing component failure rate, as well as shared information and responsibility among the operating system, runtime system, and applications; scalable I/O systems that may include alternatives to file systems; self-aware system software; programming models that allow developers to express their execution goals for achieving security, dependability, power efficiency, and performance; and low-power circuits that can be used across multiple UHPC or extreme scale system designs.

Cray Shows Off New AMD-Powered XE6 Supercomputer

At its annual users conference, supercomputer vendor Cray unveiled the XE6 supercomputer, formerly codenamed Baker, which will start shipping in the third quarter. The XE6 features AMD’s Opteron 6100 “Magny-Cours” processors and a new interconnect, Gemini, that will offer tremendous improvement in messaging rates and a three-fold reduction in latency. Cray already has more than $200 million in contracts for the XE6, which can scale to more than 1 million cores.

Supercomputer vendor Cray is unveiling its latest high-end system powered by Advanced Micro Devices’ latest Opteron processors and featuring Cray’s newest interconnect technology, dubbed “Gemini.”

The result is the XE6 supercomputer, which Cray officials said can scale to more than 1 million cores and can expand the reach of petascale computing to a wider range of HPC (high-performance computing) applications.

Cray officials introduced the XE6—formerly codenamed “Baker”—May 25 at the 2010 Cray User Group meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The new supercomputer will start shipping early in the third quarter, but already Cray has more than $200 million in contracts for the system from such facilities as the Korea Meteorological Administration and the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center.

Cray also will provide three XE6 systems to the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center and the U.S Army Engineer Research and Development Center as part of the Department of Defense's HPC modernization program. Other customers include the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) through a partnership with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The system is powered by AMD’s Opteron 6100 chips, which offer from eight to 12 cores each. AMD released the chip family—formerly named “Magny-Cours”—in March. Cray’s current XT6 supercomputer also runs on the Opteron 6100 processors.

According to Barry Bolding, Cray's vice president of scalable systems, the combination of the AMD chips with the new Gemini interconnect technology bring vast improvements to the XE6 over previous models.

The Gemini interconnect—which replaces the current SeaStar technology—offers greater performance in multicore environments, including a 100-fold improvement in messaging rates and a three-fold reduction in latency over current systems. It also offers hardware support for a global user address space.

"With the new Gemini interconnect, we are putting the final piece of the puzzle in place," Bolding said in a statement. "With the Gemini interconnect we will provide the scalable network to meet the demands of a petascale environment. The Cray XE6 system is the production supercomputer designed for the multicore era."

Also included in the XE6 is the third generation of the Cray Linux Environment operating system, which was announced in April.

Cray showed off the XE6 a week before the 2010 International Supercomputing show in Hamburg, Germany.

Phase two of the contract, which includes the delivery of the additional "Baker" system and upgrading the Cray XT6 system to a "Baker" supercomputer, is expected to be complete in 2011. News: ARSC Included in $45M DoD Award for New Supercomputers

FAIRBANKS, Alaska, March 3 -- The Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (ARSC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks has acquired new supercomputing resources under a $45 million award from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to Seattle-based supercomputer manufacturer Cray Inc. ARSC is the sole provider of open research computing capabilities for the Defense Department's High Performance Computing Modernization Program. ARSC will receive an 11,648-computer core Cray supercomputer. ARSC also operates a 3,456-core Cray XT5 named Pingo, and a 2,312-processor Sun Opteron cluster called Midnight. In addition to ARSC, the $45 million award to Cray provides for the purchase of new high-performance computing machines at Defense Department centers in Mississippi and Ohio.

The new Cray for ARSC will be installed later this year in the National Petascale Computing Facility at the University of Illinois and remotely operated by ARSC staff from Fairbanks. The facility, now in its final phase of construction, is run by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. It will feature a new interconnect chipset, known as "Gemini," as well as enhanced system software to boost performance and productivity.

In addition to the ARSC supercomputer, the National Petascale Computing Facility will house Blue Waters, a massive supercomputer funded by the National Science Foundation that will be capable of performing quadrillions of calculations every second.

"We think this partnership with one of the largest academic supercomputing centers in the U.S. provides the modernization program and its users with more opportunities for collaboration and shared use of technologies co-located at NCSA," said ARSC Director Frank Williams.

NCSA director Thom Dunning is also supportive of the new partnership.

"This cooperative arrangement with ARSC opens up exciting opportunities for further collaboration between our two centers, and potentially between NCSA and the Department of Defense," he said. "We look forward to working with ARSC to use our expertise and experience to help the scientists and engineers supported by DOD meet their research goals," Dunning said.

The partnership with NCSA is also expected to provide the Defense Department's High Performance Computing Modernization Program with a venue conducive to developing strategic opportunities with other federal agencies, and especially the National Science Foundation, according to ARSC director Williams. "ARSC continues to take a leadership role in connecting academic, research, computing and defense communities with the computers, data storage systems, high-speed networks and next-generation experimental systems necessary for discovery in engineering and science," he said.

"It also provides significant growth and sustainment opportunities for ARSC," Williams said. "Running the new Cray remotely frees up much-needed space and high-demand power supplies so that we can install and operate new academic supercomputing systems here in Fairbanks." Earlier this year, ARSC announced that, in partnership and collaboration with researchers at UAF and the University of Hawaii, a new supercomputer and a new data storage system funded by a National Science Foundation cyber infrastructure grant will be installed in the Butrovich Building this spring. Those and related systems support more than 280 UAF researchers whose work would not be possible without the use of ARSC supercomputing resources.

Supercomputing resources at ARSC are used by a global community of researchers, within the U.S. Defense Department, the University of Alaska and other locations to advance scientific discovery for national competitiveness, global security and economic success. News: Cray Inc. Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2009 Results

Company Posts Record Annual Revenue

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - 02/16/10) - Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NASDAQ:CRAY - News) today announced 2009 financial results for the fourth quarter and full-year. Revenue for the fourth quarter of 2009 was $88.2 million compared to $155.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2008. The fourth quarter of 2008 revenue included approximately $100 million from a single transaction, the Cray XT5 supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, known as "Jaguar" (currently the fastest supercomputer in the world). The company reported net income for the fourth quarter of 2009 of $3.0 million, or $0.08 per share, compared to a net loss of ($26.0 million), or ($0.79) per share, in the fourth quarter 2008. A non-cash, goodwill impairment of $54.5 million was taken in the fourth quarter of 2008.

For 2009, Cray reported record revenue of $284.0 million and a net loss of ($0.6 million), or ($0.02) per share. For 2008, revenue was $282.9 million and net loss was ($40.7 million), or ($1.25) per share.

For the fourth quarter 2009, overall gross profit margin was 41 percent compared to 36 percent in the fourth quarter 2008. Product margin for the quarter was 43 percent compared to 36 percent in the prior year period, and fourth quarter 2009 service margin was 37 percent. Overall gross profit margin for 2009 was 37 percent compared to 39 percent in 2008. Product margin for 2009 was 34 percent compared to 39 percent in 2008 and service margin for 2009 was 44 percent compared to 40 percent for 2008.

Core operating expenses, consisting of research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative expenses, increased to $106.1 million in 2009 from $93.5 million in 2008. The increase in operating expenses in 2009 was primarily due to increased research and development ("R&D") expenses resulting from a delayed Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ("DARPA") contract modification and related development milestones. Included in the 2009 results were $8.5 million for depreciation and amortization and $5.8 million related to stock compensation. Additionally, 2009 results were negatively impacted by $2.0 million of non-cash items related to recent changes in accounting guidelines applicable to our now retired convertible notes.

Core operating expenses in the fourth quarter 2009 were $33.7 million compared to $27.2 million in the prior year period. Included in the fourth quarter 2009 results were non-cash items of $2.1 million for depreciation and amortization and $1.2 million related to stock compensation.

As of December 31, 2009, cash and short-term investments totaled $113.2 million.

"I am very pleased that we were able to post another year of record revenues, including strong growth in our custom engineering initiative," said Peter Ungaro, president and CEO of Cray. Outlook

A wide range of results remains possible for 2010. Many variables may impact our results, but one significant item is the timing of the availability and release of our next generation supercomputer, code-named "Baker," including its new interconnect chipset, known as "Gemini," and associated system software.

Assuming a successful release of Baker in the third quarter of 2010 as currently planned, we anticipate revenue in the range of $305 to $325 million for 2010. As a result of the timing of the Baker system release, we expect a significant majority of 2010 revenue to be recognized in the fourth quarter. Service revenue is expected to be in the range of $110 million for 2010, driven by strong growth in our custom engineering initiative. Gross margins for 2010 are expected to be in the mid-30 percent range. Operating expenses are expected to be lower in 2010 than in 2009, driven primarily by lower research and development expenses for the year. Based on this outlook, we expect to be profitable for 2010.

We expect to use cash in 2010, with the majority of the decline coming in the third quarter as we build inventory for product deliveries during the second half of 2010.

-- During the fourth quarter, Cray successfully installed and received acceptance for the upgrade to the Cray XT5 supercomputer named "Jaguar" at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. With this system clocking in at over two petaflops of peak performance, several real-world applications were run at speeds well beyond anything previously achieved. An Oak Ridge research team recorded an unprecedented sustained performance of over one petaflops on an important quantum chemistry problem and another in material science research that may facilitate new storage mediums and the development of lighter, stronger motors for electric vehicles. Also, following the upgrade, the Jaguar system was recognized by the Top 500 list (www.top500.org) as the world's fastest supercomputer.

The one-year contract represents the custom engineering group's first breakthrough into the commercial market.

-- During the first quarter of 2010, an amendment to our development agreement with DARPA was finalized. Consistent with previous disclosure, the remaining amount of the contract was reduced by $60 million, to $92.5 million. The contract reduces the project's overall scope, and consequently we expect future R&D expenses related to this program, net of reimbursement, to be lower than previously anticipated. As with the previous contract, the balance of the modified contract is expected to be received through achievement of a series of pre-defined milestones culminating in the delivery of a prototype system in 2012. The next payable milestone is expected to be completed later in the first quarter of 2010.

News: Cray gets $45M in Defense Department contracts

Cray Inc. said it’s won three high-performance computing awards from the U.S. Department of Defense that total more than $45 million.

The Seattle supercomputer maker (NASDAQ: CRAY) said it’s the largest Department of Defense (DoD) high-performance computing modernization program award in the program’s history.

Cray said it will provide three of its supercomputing systems to top DoD Supercomputing Resource Centers, including the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio; the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center in Fairbanks, Alaska; and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Miss.

In a statement, Cray said its “supercomputers will be used to support basic and applied research, and product development and evaluation. These systems will help to protect the military through the development of new materials, fuels, armor and weapons systems, and assist long-term weather predictions to plan humanitarian and military operations throughout the world.”
