Buried deep in the Lancaster County dirt are billions of dollars in gold that a mining company has been furiously digging for during the past six years.

OceanaGold's effort has drawn praise locally for the hundreds of jobs it created, but the company also has sparked criticism over its failure to follow environmental laws, as well as the massive impact the mine has had on the landscape.

Now, however, the company has struck a deal with environmentalists that could make it easier for OceanaGold to expand from about 4,500 acres to nearly 5,400 acres.

Remembering Hound Dog Taylor (April 12, 1915 – December 17, 1975)
"The noisy blues mage Hound Dog Taylor was a master. His quote, "When I die, they'll say 'He couldn't play shit, but he sure made it sound good,'" is emblazoned on a T-shirt, over a photo of his 6-fingered fretting and sliding hand. And his stage persona—laughing and joking at warp speed and bullhorn volume, drunk, Pall Mall dangling from his lips, a huge slide raking his Kawai Kingston's strings in a way that made his amp detonate fragmentation bombs—was that of a barroom jester. But there is genuine magic at the nucleus of Hound Dog's wild-ass playing, for the effect it had on audiences and the story in sound it still tells.
"Anybody who heard Hound Dog live and says they didn't have a good time is lying," attests John Sinclair, the American counterculture hero who helped present Taylor while serving on the board of the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival in the early '70s. "He'd start his sets by yelling, 'Let's have some fun!' And everyone did. He's my all-time favorite artist."
Like the animal whose name he wore, Hound Dog Taylor loved being with people. Fans around the world knew him as funny, warm, smiling—the perpetual genial host. "Even when he was at home, he was 'on,' just like he was onstage—the life of the party," says Iglauer. And whenever the young record man visited Taylor's apartment, it was buzzing with visiting friends and relatives. But in his quiet times, Taylor often appeared sad and regretful. "He seemed to feel that he missed out on a lot of things in life," says Bruce Iglauer. And he persecuted himself over what he saw as a lack of musical and practical education. "I don't believe he appreciated the depth of his own soulfulness or the transcendent joy that his music created."

A 1795 Silver Dollar Is Expected to Sell for a Record $1.25 Million

A 1795 silver dollar is expected to set an all-time record for the category when it goes up for sale on Tuesday with an estimated value of US$1.25 million.

The rare coin will be offered at a live auction at the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Expo in Baltimore, marking its first appearance on the market since 1996, according to Stack’s Bowers Galleries, which is handling the sale.

The Draped Bust silver dollar, featuring a bust of Liberty, was minted from 1795 to 1803, and was reproduced, dated 1804 into the 1850s. The design succeeded the Flowing Hair dollar, the first silver dollar struck by the United States Mint.

The silver dollar offered for sale is one of only three specimens with a centered bust, according to Stack’s Bowers Galleries, a leading numismatics auction house.

“It is one of the most spectacular survivors of this issue and was potentially one of the very first coins struck from the dies,” says Brian Kendrella, president and CEO of Stack’s Bowers Galleries. “It is an historic relic from America’s formative years and is likely unique,” possibly produced for presentation purposes.

The current price record for a 1795 Draped Bust dollar is US$1.06 million, set at a Stack’s Bowers Galleries auction in May 2016.

The present example was held in the collection of the late Paul Zito, a medical doctor in New York who died in 2005, and his wife, Rosalie. More than 92 coins from their collection, assembled over eight years from 1995 to 2003, will be sold at Stack’s Bowers Galleries, with a total estimate of US$3 million.

The collection has been stored safely by the family since 2005, the auction house said.

The entire Zito Collection is also available for viewing and bidding on the firm’s website, with live bidding to take place on Tuesday evening at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Last month, 13 copper-industry representatives at the London Metal Exchange were asked whether Russian metal should be blocked from its warehouses. Ten of them said “yes.” But when advisory groups for nickel and aluminum discussed the same question, the general consensus was “no.”

The LME, which is the ultimate decision-maker, says it won’t take action that goes beyond government sanctions — which, so far, have left most of the metals industry untouched.

But the behind-closed-doors discussions reflect a wider angst over whether to keep buying from Russia, as the industry weighs the stigma from the war against its own commercial interests — and the fact that vital metals like aluminum and copper were in short supply even before the invasion of Ukraine.

For now, Russian metal is largely still flowing to the world’s factories and building sites. Many traders and fabricators who buy from Russian companies are tied in to pre-existing purchase deals that can extend over years. And commodities merchants have a well-earned reputation as buyers and financiers of last resort when others have long backed away.

Still, a growing number in the industry say they won’t take on new Russian business, and some are actively working to disentangle themselves. That’s making it ever-harder for Russia’s metals producers to sell whatever output is not already contracted, and may ultimately force them to cut production if there’s no change by the time long-term deals come to an end.

For the LME, the risk is that material mined in Russia starts piling up in its warehouses because it has nowhere else to go, creating dangerous dislocations at the nexus of the global metals trade.

Yet no matter what happens with today's vote, the fate of cannabis legalization -- and therefore cannabis stocks -- will likely fall to the Senate, where the path to passage is highly uncertain at best.

Shares of Hycroft Mining Holding Corp. rallied in very active trading Tuesday, as the gold and silver miner enjoyed its new meme-like status, with help from new investor AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc.

The stock HYMC, +11.64% shot up as much as 33.6% intraday before paring gains to be up 18.5% in afternoon trading, which puts it on track for an eight-month closing high. Trading volume swelled to 348.7 million shares, compared with the full-day average over the past 30 days of 71.7 million shares, and enough to make the stock the most actively traded on major U.S. exchanges.

That follows an 81.3% blast off on Monday on record volume of 385.3 million shares, after AMC Chief Executive Adam Aron appeared on CNBC to explain the decision to invest in the company.

The movie theater operator AMC, +0.38% and metals investor Eric Sprott had announced before the March 15 open that they were each making a $27.9 million investment in Hycroft, in a move that stunned many on Wall Street given that the Hycroft operated in a business that was well outside AMC’s core competency. Aron explained that one of things AMC wanted to do with the $1.8 billion war chest it accumulated by cashing in on the meme-stock frenzy that had boosted its stock price was to find “transformational” acquisition opportunities. In Hycroft, Aron said, AMC found a company with great assets in the ground (gold and silver) that was suffering from a cash squeeze, just like AMC was before it was saved by its shareholders.

“We knew we were going to take some flak when we did it,” Aron said on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” segment. “There was one thing we were certain of — we were going to make a lot of money.”

That they did, as the value of the 46.82 million shares of Hycroft that AMC owned has increased by $69.3 million in two days. That’s more well more than double AMC’s initial investment of $27.9 million.

CNBC’s David Faber then asked Aron, if AMC’s new core competency was “to use the memesters that you have to help turn around the fortunes of a company because they’re willing to put money behind it,” and Aron answered:

“I think I have to say the answer to your question is, ‘yes.'”

Hycroft Mining followed by tweeting late Monday, that it certainly liked the attention it was getting, and Aron’s comments.

Prior to AMC’s investment, Hycroft was a so-called “penny stock,” as it had closed below the $1 mark every day since Nov. 15, 2021. It had closed at its record low of 29 cents as recently as March 3. The company has been warning since March 2019 that its auditors have expressed “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue as a going concern.

What may have helped make the penny stock of such a troubled company, on top of AMC’s investment, was that short interest, or bearish bets in the stock had spiked up 3,214% during the first half of March, to a record 11.02 million shares as of March 15 from 332,661 shares at the end of February. That boosted short interest as a percent of the public float of shares to 23.5%, which compared with fellow meme stocks AMC of 20.3% and GameStop Corp. GME, -5.11% of 19.6%.

Hycroft’s stock has climbed 786.8% month to date, while fellow meme-stocks AMC has rallied 61.0% and GameStop has run up 52.1%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 index SPX, +1.23% has gained 5.8% so far in March.

Drilling at Hycroft began in 1966 for native sulfur with gold and silver reported at depth in several holes in 1974. Starting in 1977, drilling switched targets from sulfur to precious metals with sporadic drilling by various owners up to 1985 when HRDI gained control of the property and began an aggressive campaign including 3,212 holes to identify shallow run-of-mine heap leachable material.

In 2006, the operation was restarted and an aggressive drill campaign commenced with a goal of identifying potential expansion areas and mineralization at depth. In 2008 the Vortex discovery hole was drilled indicating a large sulfide resource with significant gold and silver intercepts. The drill program from 2008 to 2013 focused on development of this area which now represents a significant portion of the total deposit. Step-out drilling during the 2008 to 2013 time frame also indicated continuity of mineralization to the south, including potential for near surface mineralization. Very limited drilling has taken place since 2013, with only a few holes being drilled for condemnation or metallurgical samples. From 1981 to the end of 2018, 5,501 holes had been drilled representing 2,482,722 feet of drilling. The deposit is drill limited and remains open in all directions and at depth.
