$MJNA @ TheStreet. Blake Schroeder, CEO of Kannaway, describing his company's beauty line as an "entry way" product for new markets and more acceptable by the mainstream consumer.
Beauty "went from something we didn't talk about at all at in the company to this becoming a significant part of our sales," says Schroeder in an interview with Real Money. "As we continue to expand, this is a product that we can lead with that's going to have less regulatory issues than other cannabis-based products."
Last year, the beauty line represented less than 5% of Kannaway's business, until the company decided to refocus. The beauty segment shot up to almost 11% of the company's sales.
San Diego-based Kannaway, has six beauty products derived from cannabis, including a detox soak, a toner, serum and an exfoliant. It launched its first beauty product only 2.5 years ago and is fast becoming one of the early movers in the European space.
Kannaway is owned by a publicly listed company Medical Marijuana Inc. $MJNA , whose stock price didn't rise above $1 over the past five years.

Also, I am always willing to learn more about CVSI or other company's processes, but I didn't want to clog up either CVSI or CWBHF board with the general hemp/CBD discussion as I know I do that sometimes.
I saw you ask this question and thought I would come over here to try to clarify.
Is there is difference between CBD derived from cannabis or hemp?
There is no difference in CBD derived from marijuana vs. hemp. Both plants are cannabis and CBD is just a molecule. However, CBD is not what these companies are selling unless you are talking only about isolates. These companies are selling hemp extract that contains high amounts of CBD(hopefully). There is a whole bunch of stuff other than CBD in the extracts. Terpenes, flavonoids, fatty acids, over 80 other cannabinoids and more are in these extracts(also hopefully).
There are currently three kinds of hemp; Hemp for fiber, hemp for seed, and hemp for cannabinoids. Each type is bred for it's particular end use. You can derive cannabinoids, including CBD, from fiber and seed hemp but there are all kinds of problems with this. Additionally, when only using seed and stalk for cannabinoid extraction, you will end up with even less cannabinoid content in favor of more byproducts and contaminants.
Cannabinoid rich hemp is also terpene rich hemp. The other two kinds of hemp do not pack anywhere near the same kind of terpene content. This is massively important. The entourage effect is not a catch phrase, it is the whole point of taking hemp extract. CBD is just one component.
The true way to compare all of these different hemp extract products would be for all the companies to show us chemical profiles of their products so that we can see which has more of each cannabinoid and terpene. Instead of asking what the difference is in "CBD" from different sources or different companies, I suggest trying to gauge what the difference is in their product's entire chemical profile. That will hopefully be how the industry develops to further discern the brands from each other.
CVSI will have to change the type of plants that they source from. That does not mean they will need to become farmers but it does mean that they will need to buy CBD rich hemp from domestic producers. Dowling knows this, so I'm not sure why he complained about other companies not using seed-fiber hemp. I'm sure he will try to switch to domestically produced CBD rich hemp whenever he can find the right supplier and/or pricing. CVSI will be looking to buy CBD rich hemp from growers like CWBHF, but CWBHF in particular wont sell their plants.
My problem with CVSI's production system is that, IMO, there is something not true about it. They are either doing something differently than they claim or the product doesn't contain all that it should. There is no way they are only using seeds and stalks from seed-fiber hemp and getting anything comparable to something like CWBHF or Bluebird, who use the whole plant and cannabinoid rich hemp. CVSI's choice of hemp also likely increases the concentrations of heavy metals and microbes, so I am sure they have to put much effort into "cleaning" the product before selling it.
Instead of asking what the difference is in "CBD" from different sources or different companies, I suggest asking what the difference is in their product's entire chemical profile.
Regardless, I think the main production question for CVSI going forward is what is going to be the difference in cost to source more expensive hemp domestically. Save money on shipping but pay more for the plants? I don't know, but I think admitting the direction that they have to go would be more stand-up than complaining about the better hemp others use while they are gonna have to make the change to do the same anyway.
So, when I rant on about the different quality of different hemp sources, I'm not referring to the quality of the extracted CBD molecules, I'm referring the quality of the entire hemp extract that will be ingested in the end.

Walgreens will sell CBD creams, patches and sprays in nearly 1,500 stores in select states, the company told CNBC on Wednesday.
The drugstore chain will sell the cannabis-based products in Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vermont, South Carolina, Illinois and Indiana. Walgreens declined to specify which brands it would carry.
“This product offering is in line with our efforts to provide a wider range of accessible health and wellbeing products and services to best meet the needs and preferences of our customers,” Walgreens spokesman Brian Faith said in an email to CNBC.
Rival drugstore chain CVS introduced CBD-containing topicals, including creams and salves, to stores in eight states earlier in March. As the non-psychoactive cannabis compound becomes one of the hottest ingredients in consumer products, retailers are carefully evaluating the market.
Consumers are increasingly curious about CBD, which promises to help everything from anxiety to pain even though there is scant evidence backing up these claims. And while CBD derived from hemp is now legal thanks to the farm bill Congress passed late last year, the FDA says companies still can’t add CBD to food or sell it as a dietary supplement.
The regulatory uncertainty has left some large companies on the sidelines for now. Selling CBD-infused beauty and skin-care products brings far less risk, making it an obvious first step for retailers.
Articles are claiming the red across the MJ sector today was from CRON being downgraded. Seems a bit dramatic to me. Many recovered pretty well though.

CBD and hemp are now legal in the U.S., so what does that mean for pot companies?

Legalization of hemp leaves CBD decisions up to the states, could boost hemp farming in U.S.
President Donald Trump signed the farm bill on Thursday, which legalized industrial hemp in the U.S.
Industrial hemp is now legal in the U.S., which could loosen laws around the popular marijuana extract CBD.
President Donald Trump signed the 2018 farm bill on Thursday afternoon, which legalized hemp — a variety of cannabis that does not produce the psychoactive component of marijuana — paving the way to legitimacy for an agricultural sector that has been operating on the fringe of the law. Industrial hemp has made investors and executives swoon because of the potential multibillion-dollar market for cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-psychoactive compound that has started to turn up in beverages, health products and pet snacks, among other products.
The farm bill is a sprawling piece of legislation that sets U.S. government agricultural and food policy for the country and is renewed roughly every five years. This version of the bill places industrial hemp — which is defined as a cannabis plant with under 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC — under the supervision of the Agriculture Department and removes CBD from the purview of the Controlled Substances Act, which covers marijuana. The law also “explicitly” preserved the Food and Drug Administration’s authority to regulate products containing cannabis, or cannabis-derived compounds.
The overall effect is not assured because, like cannabis — which is illegal under U.S. federal law although some states have allowed medical or recreational use — states will continue to be able to enact laws related to CBD and industrial hemp, allowing for a potential patchwork of legislation across the country. Other questions remain in terms of how exactly the Agriculture Department will regulate the plant.
As CBD goes mainstream and beverage giants, food companies and others have begun to take serious interest in the roughly $2 billion U.S. market. Tilray Inc. TLRY, +10.28% announced a partnership with Anheuser-Busch InBev SA BUD, -1.48% this week to research marijuana-based beverages, and Constellation Brands Inc. STZ, -3.03% has invested heavily in pot producer Canopy Growth Corp. Other large companies, like Molson Coors Brewing Co. TAP, -0.92% , have invested in research, and Coca-Cola Co. KO, -0.75% and others have at least considered making a play for the space.
Smaller companies focused on CBD beverages, such as New Age Beverages Corp. NBEV, +8.73% , have been targeted by investors, but some firms have used CBD-related announcements to pump stock prices as well as fuel excitement in a compound that scientists do not fully understand. Other companies operating in the sector will benefit too: Charlotte’s Web Holdings Inc. CWBHF, +9.17% has focused on a range of CBD products, capturing about 17% market share in 2017 with sales in 3,000 retail locations, according to PI Financial research.
U.K.-based GW Pharmaceuticals PLC GWPH, -5.38% also stands to gain from the farm bill, as one of its flagship drugs called Epidiolex, a seizure drug, counts CBD as an important component. Epidiolex is the first drug derived from cannabis that the Food and Drug Administration has approved.
Despite uncertainties, cannabis executives and those tied only to the hemp-growing industry are heralding the farm bill as a major victory for business owners and consumers.
Qualis Cannabis Corp. Chief Product Officer Julien Morris said that the bill grants the same legitimacy to hemp farmers as others in agriculture.
“It allows them to use banks, get insurance and investment capital will be less spooked,” he said over the phone.
Luke Zigovits, chief executive of Wisconsin-based Hemp Science, said, “We can finally relax. Because now we can source seed, now we can sell our product across state lines. Prohibition is over. It broadens horizons, allowing universities to do research, for example.” Beyond moving the industry into legitimacy, Zigovits said there are opportunities for tobacco farmers in Wisconsin and elsewhere to start growing industrial hemp crops as well.
In Canada, where cannabis for recreational use is legal under federal law, some of the largest licensed pot producers have been eyeing or actively trying to capture the CBD market via hemp-related expansion.
Tilray Chief Executive Brendan Kennedy said over the phone earlier this week that his company has made a supply agreement with LiveWell Canada Inc. to purchase industrial hemp-derived CBD that it will use for “wellness” and medical products distributed across the U.S. and Canada.
“That gives us the opportunity to meet increased demand in Canada and other countries around the world, and presents us with an opportunity to capitalize on a $22 billion market for hemp-derived products,” he said.
Executives from Canopy Growth CGC, +4.89% WEED, -1.38% and rival Aurora Cannabis Inc. ACB, -3.59% ACB, -3.64% both discussed their hemp operations on September-quarter earnings calls that included disappointing results related to early recreational pot sales. Aurora declined to comment on the latest developments and Canopy did not make executives available by the time of publication.
“We have intellectual property that we’ve developed around how to manage hemp, and that we thought was prudent, because I think hemp is going to happen in the U.S. and when it does, I know that’s not the time to start,” said Canopy Chief Executive Bruce Linton in November’s earnings conference call. “You should have already been started up and ramped up, and get ready to revenue up. We think we are.”
Aurora Chief Corporate Officer Cam Battley said in the company’s earnings call last month that it has made acquisitions in Lithuania and Uruguay, as well as taken a stake in an Alberta-based hemp producer, giving it a strong position in the market.
“With this large presence in the CBD space, we’re embarking on a CBD-focused strategy that covers the entire value chain from supply through genetics, research and clinical trials to product development and distribution and distributing product to international markets across five continents,” Battley said in the call.
Cronos Group Inc. CRON, -0.36% CRON, +0.20% , unlike some of its Canadian rivals, may not be as well-positioned to take advantage of changes to industrial hemp laws in the U.S.; it has not banked sales from hemp-related products nor does it have assets related to hemp. Cronos declined to comment.
Cannabis stocks mostly fell Thursday with a few exceptions. Tilray gained 10.4% after Wednesday’s announcement, Cronos fell 2.3%, Canopy dipped 1.8% and Aurora dropped 3.6%. ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF MJ, +5.86% was down 2.2% as the S&P 500 index SPX, -1.58% declined 1.6%.
