The DMW Interview with Broadcaster.com: We Are Not Just Another Video Site!
Broadcaster is a new entertainment community that is not willing to take just any content from anyone. The concept is two-fold: Filter out all the crap that is on YouTube as well as help talented creators to find a loyal audience.
"We only want the best of the best, only a thousand or so contributors", says Martin R. Wade III, President and Chief Executive Officer of Broadcaster, Inc.
Broadcaster has since its launch at the end of last year already amassed loyal audiences that upload and view millions of video files each month. Martin Wade says that the early success of Brodcaster is proof of that there is just too much content on YouTube and the vast majority of it is no good.
"They (YouTube) are willing to take anything from everyone, 80% is not worth anything", he says.
Nolan Quan was previously President of AccessMedia Networks and is now principal shareholder and consultant to Broadcaster. He describes Broadcaster.com as "the next generation community site":
"MySpace allows people to put up profiles and use very simple tools to personalize those profiles. Embedding YouTube clips is one of those simple ways of personalizing your profile. We want to go one step further and offer several multimedia applications in order to streamline the user’s ability to not only find and organize online entertainment but also create their own original podcasts, videos, and live webcasts", says Nolan Quan.
He describes the idea behind Broadcaster as to only attract the best of the best, for those who are not satisfied with what is currently available on MySpace and YouTube. By offering them free online resources such as the video editing tools Studio Pro, contributors can put together professional looking programs and then go on and help them find their audience.
When asked about business models and why contributors should use Broadcaster instead of Revver (whose approach to attracting top talent is by offering revenue split arrangements) they are quick to point out what they think is Revver’s major weakness:
"Revver and those sites that have a shared model don’t have a clue how to get people to visit the site and have as a result not been successful. We don’t want to copy people who are not successful", says Martin Wade.
What is your business model?
"It is advertising-based. We will wait until our community reaches critical mass and then introduce advertising. YouTube waited 18 months until they introduced advertising and we will most likely copy that model. In the future we see several up-selling opportunities, but that is at least two years away", says Martin Wade.
What are some of those up-selling opportunities?
"I don’t think that the studios want to cannibalize DVD sales when HD market is still solidifying - but I see the potential for an SD market for smaller windows and Internet. The studios can distribute their SD content through sites such as ours and allow it to be mashed up. We’ll charge consumers for it and eventually be a credit card processor. But all these opportunities are just gravy. Advertising will be the main source of revenue for years to come", says Nolan Quan.
What are your traffic goals for this year?
"At any given time there are up to 100,000 users on our site that are viewing content. Also, at any given time there are over 1,000 registered Broadcaster users logged in and either broadcasting on their own webcams, chatting with other users, or broadcasting content from a playlist. We are aiming to increase the number of logged in registered users at any given time to 20,000 fairly soon. Then we will decide if we stop there and start advertising or continue growing", says Martin Wade.

YouTube Unveils Anti-Piracy Filters
By MICHAEL LIEDTKE
SAN BRUNO, Calif. (AP) — Online video leader YouTube has rolled out long-awaited technology to automatically remove copyrighted clips, hoping to placate movie and television studios fed up with the Web site's persistent piracy problems.
The filtering tools are designed so the owners of copyrighted video can block their material from appearing on YouTube, which has become a pop culture phenomenon in its 2-year existence. The tools also give the owners of copyrighted video the option to sell ads around their material if they want the clips to remain available on YouTube.
To find and remove copyrighted music, YouTube already uses separate filtering tools developed by Los Gatos-based Audible Magic Corp.
YouTube's previous lack of copyright protections for video content prompted Viacom Inc. to sue it for $1 billion for showing thousands of clips that the New York-based company owned.
As YouTube's traffic soared, movie and TV studios became increasingly frustrated with the rampant piracy fueling its popularity, though YouTube said it has followed copyright laws by removing protected video upon request.
Studios' exasperation with YouTube escalated as other popular Web sites introduced filtering technology in recent months to prevent copyrighted material from being uploaded.
YouTube's critics have argued that the site turned a blind eye to flagrant piracy so it could show more appealing material to build its audience and pump up its value. Google prized San Bruno-based YouTube so much it paid $1.76 billion to buy the site 11 months ago.
YouTube has been working with Google engineers ever since to develop the tools needed to flag copyrighted video, said David King, a YouTube product manager.
Google and YouTube executives began promising the new copyright protection technology six months ago.
"It has taken until now to get it right," King said Monday.
It's still too early to tell how YouTube's new filtering system will affect the 7-month-old Viacom suit, said Mike Fricklas, Viacom's general counsel. "We are delighted that Google appears to be stepping up to its responsibility and end the practice of infringement," he said Monday.
Louis Solomon, a lawyer representing and English soccer league and music publisher Bourne Co. in another copyright infringement case against YouTube, criticized the new filtering system as "wholly inadequate.
"It does nothing about the past and won't be enough to protect the future," Solomon said.
YouTube now needs the cooperation of copyright owners for its filtering system to work because the technology requires copyright holders to provide copies of the video they want to protect so YouTube can compare those digital files to material being uploaded to its Web site.
This means that movie and TV studios will have to provide decades of copyright material if they don't want it to appear on YouTube or spend even more time scanning the site for violations.
"We really need the content community to work with us," King said. "We need them to help us help them."
Without the help of copyright owners, YouTube has no way of knowing whether material has been legally or illegally posted to the site, King said, because copyrighted video is sometimes provided by the legal owner for promotional purposes.
But YouTube's critics have long derided this defense, arguing that it doesn't take a legal expert to spot some of the pirated material cropping on the Web site. "If there has been a clip from 'American Idol' posted to the site by Joe Schmoe in Oklahoma instead of Fox, you can be pretty sure it's not supposed to be there," said Rob Gould, vice president of marketing for Broadcaster.com, a rival video site.
YouTube said it has been encouraged by early tests of its filtering system with nine content providers. Only two of the test participants, Walt Disney Co. and Time Warner Inc., were willing to be identified.
Messages left with Walt Disney and Time Warner weren't immediately returned Monday.
YouTube's anti-piracy system found 18 copyright violations during a 10-day in a limited test involving one of the test participants, King said.

The script seems to fight with Vista, These videos are uploaded on Myspace and Youtube. Broadcaster's Adult filter allows better category searches with relevant video...

thats surprising
they may be working on the site some changes today
have you tried uploading same video on youtube if so what result
I'm struggling uploadng video to BCAS...
stock is struggling right now
anywhere below 2 seems good bet
the broadcaster live is great
is there any competition out there
would be good fit for alot of bigger players?
Youtube was sold for 1.6B. Facebook is price-tagged at more than 2B.
If Broadcaster is doing a good job, no one would think 1B is not realistic, which converts to almost $20/share with current shares outstanding.
Of course, generally the leaders get all and there could be nothing left for Broadcaster. That is why it is traded under $2 now. I'm expecting it to break $2.5 by year end before we can set a more precise target for it.
wondering where you think broadcaster can go
looks like a good takeover target eventually
Broadcaster.com Positioned to Be the Premier Legal Video Upload Community
Tuesday October 16, 7:58 am ET
Pursuant to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's Safe Harbor Provisions, The Company Neither Filters Content nor Alters Files
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Broadcaster, Inc. (OTCBB: BCAS - News), the premiere site for social video networking, announced is continuing efforts to comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's (DMCA) "Safe Harbor" provisions. The DMCA expressly provides that certain Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are immune from liability for copyright damages so long as they comply with certain requirements, including refraining from filtering or altering content uploaded by end users of the service.
Unlike many of the top viral video communities, defined as ISPs under the DMCA, Broadcaster does not filter or alter uploaded content files. This distinguishes Broadcaster from sites that truly fall outside the guidelines of the DMCA's Safe Harbor provisions.
"We respect the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and have developed our video uploading community accordingly," says Martin Wade, CEO of Broadcaster, Inc. "Content files are uploaded unrestricted by our users and then monitored and policed by Broadcaster community members."
Most video upload communities, such as YouTube.com, have implemented screening procedures that call for systematic review of all user uploaded content to filter out mature or adult materials. By doing so, such companies are approving video files and acquiring actual knowledge of hundreds of thousands of copyrighted materials, including blockbuster movie clips, music videos, and network television shows.
"It is reasonable to believe that if a company is systematically reviewing and filtering uploaded video files in an effort to remove adult materials, that those same employees are making a decision to publish materials that are obvious copyright violations such as television shows and music videos," says Mr. Wade. "It clearly demonstrates a willingness to ignore fundamental intellectual property rights in order to build an audience and monetize content for which it does not have rights."
In addition, YouTube uses back-end transcoding software within its network that converts the users' uploaded files from their original format into Flash video files. By doing so, they not only filter the content but also alter it and arguably place themselves further outside the DMCA Safe Harbor provisions. Broadcaster, on the other hand, offers users a free downloadable encoder that enables users to properly encode files on their local machine before uploading to Broadcaster's network, thereby eliminating any need for Broadcaster itself to alter content files.
Broadcaster users upload their files to the Internet unfiltered, but have the option to designate and isolate files that are deemed to contain materials that are unsuitable for all audiences. Such designated files are placed in a restricted area that is accessible only to members who verify they are at least eighteen years of age and who have installed Broadcaster's password-protected Parental Lock tool.
Mature-themed files that are mislabeled and released outside of the restricted area are flagged and monitored by Broadcaster's sizeable user community and are promptly reviewed for a number of criteria. Offensive materials, copyright violations, and other files deemed unacceptable by the community are removed from Broadcaster's servers upon proper notification. Additionally, Broadcaster promptly removes the accounts of users who are repeat offenders.

Broadcaster.com Launches Advertising on its Site
Thursday August 23, 8:59 am ET
--Audience Loyalty Drives Early Launch--
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Broadcaster, Inc. (OTCBB: BCAS - News) the premiere site for social video networking, has begun testing various advertising placements on its website, Broadcaster.com.
Broadcaster.com will offer advertisers the unique option of reaching specific channels within the site, and the Company is developing a targeted communities section as well. Using this approach, advertisers can reach a highly targeted audience, providing them an optimal return on their advertising dollars.
"There are more video advertisers wanting to advertise on the Internet than there are good places for them to advertise. We believe that advertisers will see value in Broadcaster.com because they can use this new venue to break through to niche communities and reach their targeted audiences. We also believe that because the advertisements will be specifically tailored to particular interests, members will be highly receptive to them," said Martin Wade, CEO of Broadcaster.
Broadcaster.com began testing its advertising concept in July of this year using both traditional and innovative marketing methods. It has been able to attract both the more traditional advertisers such as Netflix, American Express and Verizon, as well as niche market advertisers selling iPhones, ringtones and celebrity videos. Mr. Wade recently announced that the Company implemented its revenue-generating advertising strategy a year earlier than it had originally anticipated. The Company pursued this strategy because of the growth in its video views, 2-way cam community and online user session time.
"We believe that advertising on our social video network is a new and exciting venue for a wide range of advertisers. Broadcaster.com's goal is to become a key player in this rapidly growing segment of the digital advertising industry," said Wade.
Broadcaster has been testing various methods of advertising to see which types are least likely to alienate users or upset their online experience. Broadcaster has integrated ads that complement their most popular sections such as:

Broadcaster.com Launches Live Social Video Network
Tuesday July 24, 8:33 am ET
Unique Two-Way Broadcast Interface Enables Users to Broadcast Live and Pre-recorded Videos in Chat-Based Communities
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Broadcaster, Inc. (OTCBB: BCAS - News) has released its free Social Video Network - a two-way interactive video and chat interface and community-building tool - which the company predicts will be the next evolutionary step in online social communication. This new video paradigm complements Broadcaster's existing interactive community.
Broadcaster Social Video Network enables users to communicate with one another through a two-way webcam interface that provides the users with interactive broadcast controls. Users can choose to broadcast their live webcam feed or pre-recorded video playlists, broadcasting one-to-one or one-to-many.
"This is the ultimate form of online social interaction and instant communication that combines the most popular aspects of social networking with our technologies," said Martin Wade, CEO of Broadcaster, Inc. "Whether you simply like to 'people watch' or want to showcase your talents as an artist or performer, our Social Video Network makes that all possible, and the quality of the video feed is amazing."
The multi-view interface features three separate broadcast windows and text chat. The first window shows the feed that the user is broadcasting, the second window shows the people that the user has selected to view, and the third window shows the people watching the user that is broadcasting. Users can also navigate from a list that shows all active community members.
Anyone can join the Social Video Network and interact with or without a webcam.
"For those community members who don't have a webcam we provide a free tool called StudioPRO that allows them to broadcast a collection or playlist of their personal video files in place of a live webcam feed," explained Wade. "StudioPRO helps a user instantly become their own thematic broadcast channel. Whether they are discussing political views or showing videos from their summer vacation, Broadcaster helps them find their audience."
User controls within the Social Video Network enable the monitoring of all audio levels, the ability to add friends, add favorites, ignore or report users, as well as the ability to engage in private chat mode.
Broadcaster is currently developing backend technology so that users can easily integrate their Live Social Video Network broadcast feed into their personal websites or other social networks, such as Facebook, by using Broadcaster's simple embed code. In addition, Broadcaster expects to integrate this technology into broadcaster.com, mobile phones and other portable devices making Broadcaster the dominate Social Video networking solution.
