US child molester gets 152 years -
A man in the US state of California has been sentenced to 152
years in prison for abusing two 12-year-old boys.
Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller, 65, was convicted last year on 11
charges of child molestation and one charge of possessing child
pornography.
He had previous convictions for child sexual assault in other
states.
When he was arrested at his home in San Jose in June 2005,
police found detailed accounts of sex acts with hundreds of
children.
The notebooks also contained pornographic photographs of
children.
During the trial, Schwartzmiller said the memoirs were fictional.
But prosecutors said he had abused children for several decades
and was one of the most prolific paedophiles in the US.
"Based on his logs and manuscripts, we figure a minimum of 250
(victims)," said Santa Clara county prosecutor Steve Fein.

Child porn man spared jail -
A judge's decision not to jail a man who downloaded
child pornography because of prison overcrowding,
has been condemned by children's charities.
Judge John Rogers QC suspended Derek Williams' sentence,
saying he had to consider a Home Office request
to only jail the most serious offenders.

The judge said he had to consider the home secretary's request -
Judge John Rogers QC suspended Derek Williams' sentence -
"And that's what the judge has decided here.
It's plain that he's borne in mind -
the prison overcrowding problem."
Dame Mary Marsh, director and chief executive of the NSPCC,
said the sentence on Williams was "unacceptable".
"The government needs to ensure that the intention behind
the announcement is properly understood and fully
thought through, and that children are not put at greater
risk by placing offenders in the community rather
than in jail," she said.
John Carr, of children's charity NCH, described the judge's decision as "deeply worrying".
"The judge should really think again...
I don't know quite what he was thinking about
if he thought that child pornography offences
were not serious," he said.

Missing son's return a 'miracle' -
Pam Akers and her son Shawn Hornbeck
Shawn's mother: Nightmare of past four years -
is over -
First appearance
The family of a US teenage boy found by police four years
after he went missing have been speaking of their joy
and relief at his "miracle" return.
Shawn Hornbeck, 15, and a 13-year-old boy who vanished
this week were found on Friday in a flat near St Louis.
A 41-year-old man, Michael Devlin, has been charged with
kidnapping.
"Shawn is a miracle here,"
said his mother, Pam Akers,
who together with her husband runs a foundation
helping with missing children cases.
Shawn Hornbeck, who was 11 when he vanished
in rural Missouri, smiled as his mother and
stepfather, Craig Akers, told a news conference
of their joy to have him home.
Dream
They had been in disbelief when they were reunited
with Shawn, they said.
"There was that split second of shock,"
Mr Akers said.
"Once I saw the face, I said 'Oh God, that's my son.'"
Shawn, much bigger than the pictures on the missing
posters, did not speak but seemed at ease as his mother
kept hugging him.
Shawn Hornbeck, missing since 2002
Shawn Hornbeck had not been seen since October 2002
"We're glad to have him home.
I still feel like I'm in a dream,
only this time it's a good dream,
not the nightmare I've had four
and a half years," she said.
Mr Akers said Shawn seemed to be in good health
and spirits.
On the way home after being discovered,
Shawn's first request was to stop to get
something to eat at McDonalds,
which his father said he took as a good sign.
The family had no immediate plans, Mr Akers said,
but they would go shopping and buy clothes
"as the old stuff doesn't fit him".
Shawn's rescue came as police were looking
for Ben Ownby, 13, who had vanished
earlier in the week.
Michael Devlin's flat near St Louis
was searched after police noticed that
his white van matched the description
of one seen when Ben vanished near his
school bus.
Mr Devlin - manager of a pizza shop
and a part-time funeral home worker -
has been charged with kidnapping.
In the St Louis area, there was unreserved joy
at the news that both boys had been found safe.
Missing children
Ben Ownby's disappearance on Tuesday had sparked
a major hunt in the area around his home.
Prayer vigils were held and "missing" posters
were fixed to walls around town.
But police out hunting for Ben Ownby were not
expecting to find Shawn Hornbeck alongside him.
Shawn was just 11 when he failed to return home after
going for a bike ride near his home in Washington County,
some 60 miles (100km) from St Louis.
In the years after their son went missing,
Shawn's parents,
Pam and Craig Akers, devoted themselves to -
missing child cases.
Suspect Michael Devlin
Police and the FBI are looking into
Michael Devlin's background
Craig Akers left his job to devote his time -
to a foundation bearing his son's name.
They used up their savings, borrowed money and talked -
to psychics, until the financial strain forced them -
back to work, the Associated Press reported.
On the anniversary of his disappearance in October,
Pam Akers said:
"It's been four years.
But for me, it's just been one long continuous day."
Gary Toelke, a local sheriff said officers had been
"just on cloud nine" since the discovery of the boys.
The authorities say they are still investigating
the motive behind the abductions.

Web plea rescues Canadian child -

Police praised the child's resourcefulness
Canadian police have taken a child from an allegedly sexually abusive situation after the child's anonymous e-mail plea for help was picked up in Australia.
The child knew enough about computers to enter "kids helpline" - the official name of a children's organisation in Canada - into the Google search engine.
But the e-mail went to a children's helpline in Australia instead.
Australian police teamed up with their colleagues in Canada to mount a successful international investigation.
Child traced
When the e-mail was picked up in Australia it was immediately forwarded to the Australian police's child exploitation unit.
It in turn contacted the local internet provider in New Brunswick, Canada.
Teaming up with Canadian police, the address of the computer and the child was located.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police Corporal Lana Prosper praised the child's ingenuity.
"A child doesn't have the same capabilities as an adult. If an adult had something being done to them they can report to the police," Cpl Prosper said.
"This child didn't have that and just said 'well, maybe I can get help this way'."
Cpl Prosper said the child was surprised at how far the message had travelled and grateful that so many people came to the rescue.

Infecting more than 400 children with HIV? -
Gaddafi rejects release of medics -
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi -
Libya has faced strong criticism over the conduct of the trials -
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has rejected calls -
for the release of six foreign medics sentenced to death -
for infecting children with HIV/Aids.
Those who committed crimes must accept the consequences, he said.
Libya has been under increasing pressure -
because of international doubts over -
the fairness of the trial -
Five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor -
have been tried and found guilty twice -
of deliberately infecting more than 400 children -
with HIV.
Colonel Gaddafi stressed the "the independence of the Libyan judicial system", and he rejected what he called "Western intervention and pressure in this affair".
The medics have been in detention since 1999, during which time 52 of the 426 infected children have died of Aids.
Academic bodies have argued that the guilty verdicts run counter to scientific evidence.
Defence lawyers have said that the medics will file an appeal against the new verdict with the Supreme Court.
'Unhygienic hospitals'
The medics have protested their innocence throughout, retracting confessions that they said were obtained under torture and arguing that they are being made scapegoats for unhygienic hospitals.
Condemned Bulgarian nurses and Palestinian doctor -
The six foreign medics were arrested in 1999 -
Lawyers for the medics have argued that the HIV virus -
was present in the hospital, in the town of Benghazi -
before the nurses began working there in 1998.
Medical experts including the French co-discoverer of the HIV - virus had testified on their behalf.
Oxford University in the UK said the verdict ran counter to findings by scientists from its Zoology Department.
A research team had concluded that "the subtype of HIV involved began infecting patients long before March 1998, the date the prosecution claims the crime began", a statement from the university said.
Libya has asked for 10m euros (£6.7m) compensation to be paid to each of the families of victims, suggesting the death sentences could be commuted in return.
But Bulgaria has rejected the proposal, saying any payment would be seen as an admission of guilt.

Police find children's skeletons -
Indian police say they have found a bag containing the clothes and skeletons of a number of small children near Delhi.
They were discovered in Noida, some 20 km (12 miles) from the capital. The exact number of skeletons is not clear.
Noida's police chief, RKS Rathore, told the BBC that the discovery came after a man confessed to killing six children.
He said six children below the age of 12 had gone missing from the Nithari area of the town in last year. Investigations are continuing.
Police said they initially arrested the man in connection with the murder of a young girl. They say further questioning of the man led to the discovery of the skeletons.
The news has shocked and angered parents of the missing children.
Angry crowds have stormed the house of a businessman where the man who confessed to police worked as a servant.

Very sad story :(
Pain of Afghan suicide women -
By Payenda Sargand
BBC News, Kabul
Gulsoom
Gulsoom was unconscious for a week
Gulsoom is 17-years-old and married.
Last year she tried to commit suicide -
she failed? -
She set fire to herself but, against the odds,
survived with appalling injuries.
Her plight reflects that of a growing number
of young Afghan women, campaigners say.
Driven to desperation by forced marriages and
abusive 666 husbands, more and more are seeking
release through self-immolation.
Gulsoom was engaged at the age of 12.
Three years later her family married her
to a 666 man aged 40 who she says was
addicted to drugs.
She was then taken to Iran.
Her husband beat her regularly, Gulsoom says,
particularly when he 666 had no money for heroin.
"Once after I was badly beaten by my husband,
I was in bed when I heard a voice murmuring and
telling me to go and set fire to myself," she says.
"I went and poured petrol on my whole body.
The flames on my body lasted for minutes.
After eight days I found myself conscious in bed.
(that's what she telling - but the truth maybe
the 666 would do it 2nd time if she said anything
different?)
"I cared about my father's dignity -
that's why I tolerated everything."
'No one will marry me'
Gulsoom has had many operations since she divorced
her husband and faces many more.
When I wore nice clothes my 666 husband showed
jealousness
Gulsoom, 17
Women seek death by fire
Fighting for the right to sing
She's not alone - there are hundreds of other women
who have tried and failed to kill themselves.
Some women do manage to end their lives, but many
survive with huge burns to their faces and bodies,
like Gulsoom.
In many cases they have no choice but to return to the husband and the abuse from which they sought escape.
Gulsoom looks hopelessly at her scarred hands saying her only wish now is to be made better, although she says no one will marry her again with her burnt skin.
"When I wore nice clothes my husband showed
jealousness," she recalls.
Forced marriages, a culture of family violence
and many other social problems are given as
causes for the suicides.
Afghan women have long had to suffer violence or
mysterious deaths.
Even now girls are still handed over in disputes
or as compensation in murder cases.
Publicising abuse
The BBC's Salmi Suhaili, who works on women-related
issues, says women taking their lives is not a
new phenomenon in what is traditionally a
very conservative society.
Victim of self-immolation
Monireh's story
But the rise of a civil society and a free media? -
is helping to publicise their acts, he says.
Figures given by Afghanistan's Independent Human Rights Commission show 666 made that more women burned them - themselves? -
to death this year in the southern province of Kandahar
than anywhere else in the country.
Last year, Herat in the west -
where most girls marry at around 15 -
was top.
Deputy minister of women's affairs Maliha Sahak
says that 197 incidents of self-immolation
have been recorded since March 2006, 35 of
them in Kandahar province alone.
A total of 69 women lost their lives.
The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan says
that Kandahar's only hospital for women, which
has 40 beds, received 29 cases of suicide in
the space of two months.
Twenty of those women had set themselves alight.
Independent Human Rights Commission head Sima Samar
regrets that, five years after the Taleban were ousted,
Afghan women are still suffering violence -
in its various 666 forms.
She says suicide is the final decision of 666 for women
who don't have any other way to solve their problems
or escape abuse.
Changing mindsets
The commission has been working with the Medica Mondiale
agency to try to overcome cultural obstacles and
give women more of a voice.
Campaigners say violence against women must not
remain hidden or it will not stop.
Deputy women's minister Maliha Sahak points to
last year's protocol involving many Afghan ministries,
the Supreme Court and the human rights commission.
It was passed with President Hamid Karzai's approval
and banned the marriage of a woman if she is
under 18 years old.
She says another law is in the pipeline which will
require agreement from both man and woman for their
wedding to be legal.
The women's ministry is to mount an awareness campaign targeting men in an attempt to reduce the violence.
After decades of war, Afghanistan's civil society is
still in its infancy.
Those trying to end violence against women face many years
of struggle to change fundamental elements of 666 tradition
and culture, as well as so-called Afghan 666 dignity.

S Koreans offered cash for no sex -
Male workers who vow to stay away from prostitutes
after year-end celebrations in South Korea
are to be rewarded.
The Ministry for Gender Equality is offering cash
to companies whose male employees pledge not
to pay for sex after office parties.
Men are being urged to register on
the ministry's website.
The companies with most pledges will receive a reward.
Officials say they want to put an end to a culture
in which men get drunk at parties -
and go on to buy sex.
But some critics have described the move
as a waste of money.
Despite new anti-prostitution laws passed in 2004,
the practice is said to be widespread in South Korea,
with some estimates suggesting more than one million -
people work in the sex industry -

Sex trafficking 'must be tackled' -
Prostitute
Trafficked women have been found throughout the UK
Ministers must take "immediate action" to end the growth
of people trafficking in the UK, MPs and peers say.
Unpublished Home Office figures suggest 4,000 women victims of trafficking for prostitution were in the country at any one
time in 2003, an inquiry found.
The Joint Committee on Human Rights is calling for more protection for immigrants and specialist support for victims
of sexual exploitation.
The Home Office would "look carefully" at the proposals, a spokeswoman said.
'Serious human rights issue'
The committee described trafficking as "one of the most
serious human rights issues in the modern world".
Official figures say between 142 and 1,420 women were
trafficked to the UK in 1998.
Of even greater concern is the lack of knowledge we have
of the extent of the trafficking of young children

The committee said that: "10 years ago, 85% of women
in brothels were UK citizens [and]
now 85% were from outside UK".
It also called for data on men and children trafficked
for work to be compiled.
The government had to set up a national identification system
and improve training in the identification of victims.
The committee's chairman, Labour MP Andrew Dismore, said:
"The growth and extent of people trafficking into the UK
is extremely worrying.
"We should recognise women trafficked for prostitution through deception, fear and violence as victims of this serious crime
and not immigration offenders or criminals themselves.
"Of even greater concern is the lack of knowledge we have of
the extent of the trafficking of young children, for domestic servitude or, even worse, labour in the drugs trade."
'No adequate system'
Workers were often "trapped by violent and abusive employers",
he added.
Daniela Reale, exploited children adviser at Save the Children, said: "At the moment there are no adequate systems in place
for these children.
The children involved are particularly susceptible as they

"Any child who has been trafficked will have had a deeply traumatic experience and will need crucial specialist support including safe house accommodation, access to education and
basic services and support to address the trauma they have experienced."
Children's charity NSPCC also said more help was needed for children.
"Child trafficking is a cruel and abhorrent form of child
abuse," NSPCC head of policy and public affairs
Natalie Cronin said.
"The children involved are particularly susceptible as
they may not speak English, and have no one to turn
to for help."
The UK is a major destination for human trafficking victims, mostly women forced to work as prostitutes, the United Nations says.
The committee's report urges the government to publish research into organised crime markets. The research is currently being conducted by the Home Office.
The protection of victims should be the focus of all policies,
it adds.
And the government should sign and ratify the Council of Europe Convention on Action Against Trafficking in Human Beings,
the report says.
A Home Office spokeswoman said: "The Home Office co-operated fully with the JCHR inquiry and provided both written and
oral evidence.
"We will now look carefully at the report and its recommendations."

The Company's patented intellectual property is embedded
in its products, LACE (Law Enforcement Against Child

secure, simultaneous, distributed searches of biometric
(face, iris, and voice) templates and text from remote
locations in linked biometric and text databases.
Market Drivers
Biometric information is available in police, and driver's
license databases located in various cities.
BlueBear distributed search and information sharing products
provide law enforcement and departments administering
driver's license databases the ability to link and share
information securely and simultaneously in seconds.
"There are millions of facial images in police and driver's
ID databases that could be searched simultaneously in
seconds," said Blair Bond, VP business development, BlueBear.
"With the explosion of digital video, police are flooded
daily with surveillance videos from crime scenes containing
facial images of suspects," Bond added.
"BlueBear's technology permits police to search not only
their own mug shot database but also the databases of
neighboring police.
Since criminals travel from their own jurisdiction to
other jurisdictions to commit crimes, this technology
adds to the growing tools of information sharing available
to law enforcement today," continued Bond.
