Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Estimates Cut Again at BofA
By: Investing.com | September 22, 2022
In a research note Thursday, a BofA analyst cut estimates on Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) to reflect further deterioration in consumer PC demand and clearing of excess inventory.
The analyst lowered the price target on Intel to $30 from $35, reiterating an Underperform rating, and cut AMD's price target to $100 from $120, keeping a Buy rating.
However, after previous cuts, while the analyst said one more is "unwelcome," they see PC-related cuts "nearing the end," especially for AMD.
Intel's Underperform rating is based on the continued strategic, financial, and competitive challenges it faces, such as the reliance on its PC business, while AMD's Buy argument is focused on its current valuation, data center share gain potential, and execution consistency, the analyst said.
"We continue to see $6 in CY24E EPS power for AMD implying compelling <12x PE for a leading compute franchise," the analyst explained. "We expect data center strength (Genoa ramp) to help offset consumer PC/gaming headwinds. For CY23 we now model 9% YoY growth and $4.47 in pf-EPS which is below consensus at 12% sales growth and $4.86 pf-EPS."

Where to Buy AMD Stock on the Dip
By: TheStreet | September 20, 2022
• Advanced Micro Devices stock is down about 50% from its highs, but its business hums along. Let's look at where support may come into play.
It has not been a smooth ride the past few weeks. Investors are still struggling with the buy-the-dip concept in a market where the rallies are being sold and the market is putting in lower highs rather than higher lows.
That’s true for investors’ favorite stocks, too, like Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) .
On Monday, we outlined where Nvidia (NVDA) stock may find support. Now let's talk about AMD, which is down in five of the past six weeks.
I especially want to look at AMD given its relative strength vs. Nvidia.
Both stocks were hitting all-time highs in November 2021. Fast-forward a few quarters and Nvidia stock was recently down 64% last week as it was making new 52-week lows. AMD has not made new lows since July 5, when it was down 57%.
AMD stock has relative strength vs. Nvidia stock, but its business also seems to be holding up better.
Nvidia preannounced worse-than-expected results in early August, then followed up with disappointing guidance.
Conversely, AMD beat on earnings and revenue expectations and while guidance was slightly below consensus estimates, it was pretty solid given the environment.
While its business may be holding up — estimates for this year and next year are still near the highs and up considerably from the start of the year — AMD stock has been battered.
When to Buy AMD Stock
Weekly chart of AMD stock.
Chart courtesy of TrendSpider.com
In mid-2020, AMD clearly was taking dominant market share and eating Intel’s (INTC) lunch. That triggered an explosive breakout: The shares burst into a new trading range between $72 and $100.
About a year later, AMD broke out again, this time clearing the $100 level and surging to all-time highs. On the ensuing pullbacks, former resistance held as support. Once that level gave out ($100), former range support at $72 has reemerged as a significant area of interest.
The chart above lays out these levels pretty well, but as AMD stock starts to tip lower, you’ll notice more than just range support in the $70 to $72 area.
That level also includes the rising 200-week moving average and the 2022 low at $71.60. If we revisit this level, it may be advantageous for long-term bulls to accumulate a starter position.
If AMD tags this level and bounces, a push into the mid-$80s is not unreasonable and it’s where it will find its shorter-term moving average.
If the $71 level fails as support, it opens the door to a test of the mid-$60s. That's where AMD stock finds its 78.6% retracement from the all-time high down to the covid low, as well as the monthly VWAP measure. This area could also act as support.
Lastly — and for the bulls’ sake, we hope we don't see it — the $58 to $60 breakout zone could be in play if all the above support levels fail.

AMD Stock Struggles Despite $50 Billion Subsidization Buzz
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | September 6, 2022
• The U.S. Department of Commerce released plans for a $50 billion investment program
• There's been a penchant for AMD puts of late
There's been plenty of buzz surrounding chip stocks of late, amid news that the U.S. is cracking down on exports to China. While this news weighed on the semiconductor sector last week, things are looking up after earlier today the U.S. Department of Commerce released plans for a $50 billion program to subsidize chip research and manufacturing. Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) initially enjoyed a positive reaction to the news, though the weight of the broader market's selloff has since put pressure on the equity, which was last seen down 0.8% at $79.57.
It's been a rough road for the equity, which has lost 45.3% this year, and over 28% in the last 12 months. AMD staged a notable rally in July, though this positive price action lost steam at the 150-day moving average, which also put pressure on the stock back in March of this year.
Amid all these big updates for the semiconductor sector, Advanced Micro Devices stock has once again landed on Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White's list of names that have attracted the highest weekly options volume within the past two weeks. Per White's table, 2,532,909 calls and 2,295,743 puts have been exchanged during this time period, with the weekly 8/26 98-strike call and 90-strike put being the most popular.
While calls are still just outpacing puts, the latter haven't been more popular during the past year. This is per AMD's 10-day put/call volume ratio of 0.94, which sits higher than all other annual readings at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX).
Analysts remain optimistic. Of the 25 in coverage, 18 call the stock a "buy" or better, compared to seven "hold" ratings, and not a single "sell." What's more, the 12-month consensus price target of $123.89 is a 56.3% premium to current levels.

US restricts sale of AI training chips to China
By: The Verge | September 1, 2022
The US government has imposed new export restrictions on high-end computers chips used to conduct AI research, citing possible military applications for the technology. Two leading manufacturers, Nvidia and AMD, have been blocked from selling certain chips to China and Russia, with the restrictions forming part of the United States’ ongoing strategy of limiting tech exports to curb the rise of rival powers.
Nvidia and AMD disclosed the new restrictions on Wednesday, with Nvidia noting in a regulatory filing that the ban affects its A100 and H100 GPUs. The US government told Nvidia it wishes to “address the risk that the covered products may be used in, or diverted to, a ‘military end use’ or ‘military end user’ in China and Russia.” AMD confirmed to Reuters that its MI250 accelerator chip was also affected by the new restrictions.
Nvidia, the far larger of the two companies, notes that the ban will affect the estimated $400 million sales it projected in China for the third quarter of the year (it also notes that it doesn’t currently sell products to Russia). The company says it may seek a license from the US government to sell these chips to certain customers, but that it “has no assurance that the [US] will grant any exemptions.” Nvidia’s stock fell more than 6 percent on Wednesday after it disclosed the restrictions.
The US has not given exact details on what criteria it’s using to target chips, but the A100, H100, and MI250 all occupy the top-end of the AI chip market. These systems are used to train a range of machine learning applications from facial recognition to text generation, and the biggest US tech giants use them to create in-house supercomputers for R&D. Meta, for example, has built an “AI supercomputer” powered by thousands of Nvidia A100 chips.
It’s not out of the question that the same chips could be used for military research. For example, training automated targeting systems for drones or the facial recognition systems China uses to surveil its population.
A number of prominent figures in the US tech industry have, in the past, warned about China’s increasing AI capabilities as a threat to US national security. In a report published last year, Google CEO Eric Schmidt claimed that the US was “not prepared to defend or compete in the AI era.” However, other experts have said AI competition between the US and China does not constitute an arms race, and that such rhetoric is damaging to both diplomatic relations and the safe development of machine learning technology.
In response to the block, China’s ministry of commerce said the restrictions would “hinder international scientific and technological exchanges and economic cooperation, and have an impact on the stability of global industrial and supply chains and the recovery of the world economy,” reports The New York Times. The country’s foreign ministry, meanwhile, said the ban was typical of the United States’ desire for “scientific and technological hegemonism.”

AMD Stock Pops as Analysts Reflect Positively on New Lineup of Processors
By: Investing.com | August 30, 2022
Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) are up over 1% after analysts weighed in positively on the new Ryzen 7000-series CPUs.
The new Zen 4 chips are reportedly faster than what the IT experts were expecting from AMD. The company said its new Ryzen 7000 Series Desktop processors are expected to be available globally starting from September 27, starting at $299. The most powerful version, with a total cache of 80 megabytes, will start at $699.
On the pricing front, A Rosenblatt analyst notes that announced prices “seem in-line to a bit lower than expected at the high-end.”
“AMD continues to execute flawlessly and we expect share gains to continue,” the analyst wrote to clients in a note.
A Deutsche Bank analyst sees “significant improvements” from the new series of processors.
“We believe this launch will help reaccelerate AMD's gains in the desktop CPU segment, although the duration of this reacceleration will be highly dependent upon the timing/performance of INTC's upcoming Raptor Lake launch, as well as the general health of the PC environment (which has clearly been waning in recent months),” he said in a note.
Finally, A Wells Fargo analyst noted the new lineup reflects “AMD's continued high-performance focused roadmap execution.”

AMD won’t change launch pricing for Ryzen 7000 series, according to new leak
By: The Verge | August 29, 2022
• We only have to wait a few more hours for the official announcement
AMD is expected to launch four CPUs in its Ryzen 7000 series (the “X” line) this evening, and a few hours ahead of the announcement, the pricing has already leaked. According to Wccftech’s sources, the prices of the upcoming desktop chips will be as follows:
• Ryzen 9 7950X - $799 US
• Ryzen 9 7900X - $549 US
• Ryzen 7 7700X - $449 US
• Ryzen 5 7600X - $299 US
These prices, as Wccftech correctly notes, remain unchanged from the prices of the Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 lineup, which also ranged from $299 to $799 at release. The 7000 series is the direct successor to the 5000 desktop series — the 6000 series (currently trickling out in certain laptop models) skipped the desktop chips.
Much of what we know about these upcoming Ryzen 7000 CPUs comes from AMD’s Computex keynote earlier this year. They’re set to be the first desktop CPUs based on a 5nm process. They’re also the first AMD chips to boast boost clocks over 5GHz — the CPU matched the 5.5GHz output of Intel’s flagship Core i9-12900KS in a run of Ghostwire: Tokyo onstage.
The pricing, if confirmed, would not come as a surprise — the Ryzen 5000 generation was widely considered to be priced high at release, and the new generation brings a significant increase in clock speed. Still, some PC enthusiasts may see $300 for a six-core part as a bad deal since Intel’s competing Core i5-12400 part has a suggested retail price of under $200, and AMD’s own Ryzen 7 5700X (an eight-core chip from the last generation) can currently be found all over the place for under $300. That’s especially true since Ryzen 7000 buyers will also need to shell out for a new motherboard — the new chips are no longer compatible with the AM4 platform.
We’ve reached out to AMD for comment on this pricing leak.

AMD: 3 Popular Nasdaq 100 Stocks to Avoid Right Now
By: Stock News | August 16, 2022
• AMD – The Fed is expected to maintain its hawkish stance despite easing inflation numbers, which might impede the performance of the Nasdaq 100. Moreover, given the rising recession fears, it could be wise to avoid popular yet fundamentally weak Nasdaq 100 stocks, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Blackstone (BX), and BlackRock (BLK) now.
The Fed launched two back-to-back 75 bps rate hikes in June and July and is likely to maintain its hawkish stance in the September meeting as well, despite easing inflation.
Victoria Fernandez, the chief market strategist at Crossmark Global Investments, said, “For me, there’s not enough evidence for the Fed to make a huge pivot from where they are. I still think they’re considering 50, 75 basis points at the September meeting.”
Such extended monetary tightening might mar the performance of the interest rate-sensitive Nasdaq 100, which has lost 16.3% year-to-date. Moreover, lingering macroeconomic headwinds are concerning. According to Statista, there is a 5.9% probability that the United States will fall into another recession by June 2023, up from a previous estimate of 4.1%.
Furthermore, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon recently projected that there is a 20% to 30% chance of a “harder recession” and a similar chance of “something worse.”
Given the near-term uncertainties, we think it might be best to avoid popular Nasdaq 100 stocks Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD), Blackstone Inc. (BX), and BlackRock, Inc. (BLK) at this hour, considering their declining financials.
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD)
AMD operates as a semiconductor company worldwide. The company has two segments- Computing and Graphics; and Enterprise, Embedded, and Semi-Custom. It serves original equipment manufacturers, public cloud service providers, original design manufacturers, system integrators, independent distributors, online retailers, and add-in-board manufacturers.
AMD’s net revenue increased 70.1% year-over-year to $6.55 billion for the second quarter ended June 25, 2022. However, its operating income came in at $526 million, down 36.7% year-over-year. Also, its net income came in at $447 million, down 37% year-over-year, while its EPS decreased 53.4% year-over-year to $0.27.
AMD’s forward EV/S of 6.12x is 95.7% higher than the industry average of 3.12x, while its forward P/S of 6.22x is 100% higher than the industry average of 3.12x.
The stock has lost 29.8% year-to-date to close the last trading session at $101.01.
AMD’s POWR Ratings reflect its poor prospects. It has an overall grade of D, which indicates a Sell in our proprietary rating system. The POWR Ratings assess stocks by 118 different factors, each with its own weighting.
Also, the stock has a D grade for Stability. Click here to access the additional POWR Ratings for AMD (Growth, Value, Momentum, Sentiment, and Quality). AMD is ranked #85 out of 95 stocks in the Semiconductor & Wireless Chip industry.

AMD, Nvidia Have Near Term Concerns, but BofA Looks to Product Cycles
By: investing.com | August 8, 2022
A BofA analyst maintained a Buy rating on NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) on Monday, telling investors in a research note that there are near-term concerns about semiconductor stocks, but they are looking towards product cycles.
BofA monthly analysis of Steam's GPU survey highlights continued AMD and NVDA mix improvements, but weaker third-party pricing still raises yellow flags, said the analyst.
"Notably, top gaming cards on the retail market are selling at an average 11% premium (relative to MSRP) versus upwards of a 160% premium last year. Following AMD's weak Q2 gaming commentary (gaming graphics down QoQ in JunQ/SepQ), we acknowledge a potential upcoming gaming correction (a notable near-term headwind for NVDA as well, as we highlight in our cautious FQ2 outlook)," the analyst explained. "Still, following any near-term demand deceleration, we see potential for a large upgrade cycle bolstered by new AMD (RDNA3 GPUs) and NVDA (Lovelace RTX40xx series) cards."
Nvidia shares tumbled more than 8% Monday after it cut its quarterly revenue forecast following a gaming slump. Meanwhile, AMD is down 3%.
"We maintain Buy on AMD/NVDA, exposed to robust cloud capex (see report), new product launches (NVDA 5nm Hopper accelerator/Grace CPU, AMD Genoa 5nm) and a discrete GPU market that has grown at a consistent 10%-15% CAGR," concluded the analyst.

AMD Q2 Earnings Beat Expectations Significantly, Is AMD A Buy?
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | August 3, 2022
• AMD’s product portfolio remains strong as revenue continues to beat expectations
AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) reported second-quarter earnings on the 2nd of August 2022, with revenue surging by 70% y-o-y, but shares fell anyway in after-hours trading. The decline in the stock price can be attributed to management's forecasts for the third-quarter, where it expects revenue to come in slower than expected.
Semiconductors have been under pressure from analysts who have been predicting that the industry may soon face a cyclical downturn, but those predictions have not come to fruition as chip-makers continue to witness strong revenue on the back of unmet demand. Other chip makers have fared similarly well, and the likes of Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), which has been the main competitor for AMD, also beat analyst expectations quite handily during the recent quarter despite talks of a slowdown.
Analysts had also feared that chipmakers would see downward pricing pressure due to a glut of chips in the markets, which would then push revenue lower as well, and while prices have come down slightly, they have not materially affected revenue in any significant way, as most of the pricing issues have been borne by resellers, who brought up chips in order to resell them at a premium.
“We delivered our eighth straight quarter of record revenue based on our strong execution and expanded product portfolio,” said AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su. “Each of our segments grew significantly year-over-year, led by higher sales of our data center and embedded products. We see continued growth in the back half of the year highlighted by our next generation 5nm product shipments and supported by our diversified business model.”
AMD’S PRODUCT PORTFOLIO REMAINS STRONG AS REVENUE CONTINUES TO BEAT EXPECTATIONS
The outlook for semiconductors remains strong, despite talks of a cyclical slowdown. AMD's results continued to do well, as all three segments witnessed strong demand. AMD’s Zen and Zen-2 architecture, which are 50% faster than the previous generation of chips, continue to be the biggest drivers of revenue. The client segment with the Ryzen processor witnessed revenue increase by 25% for the year, to $2.2 billion, and the gaming segment also continued to do well, with revenue up 32% y-o-y, as semi-custom products offset declines in gaming graphics revenue. Finally, the data center revenue grew by 83%, despite talks of a data center bubble by analysts.
The acquisition of Xilinx resulted in gross margins declining by 2%, mainly on the amortization costs, but these costs will go away during the next quarters, which should help margins get back on track. Operating margins also came under pressure during the quarter, falling by 37% on a GAAP basis, due to adjustments, but increasing by 6% on a non-GAAP basis.
THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT AS NEW CHIPS CONTINUE TO BE RELEASED OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS
AMD has said it will release the Zen-4 eventually either in late 2022 or in 2023. The Zen-4 chip is expected to see marked improvement over the previous Zen-3 chip delivering both an increase in performance and efficiency. It also said that after the release of Zen-4 it plans to release the Zen-5 in 2024, which should only strengthen its prospects. The strong product lineup and demand across industries for chips make it quite likely that revenue will continue to increase at a high rate of growth over the next couple of years. Furthermore, the new RDNA 3 architecture is expected to play a significant role and should deliver over 50% greater performance-per-watt over the previous generation of chips according to AMD, which should help AMD compete with competitors such as Nvidia. The company is also planning on releasing multiple data center chips, including the Siena and Bergamo processors, which are expected to be the highest performing server processors, and are expected to be released in early 2023.
AMD’S FINANCIALS AND VALUATION
AMD has continued its good run of form, as the company posted an operating cash flow of over $1 billion during the quarter. AMD has projected that revenue will be around $6.7 billion in the third quarter, a 55% increase y-o-y, but with a backlog of demand, and pricing power remaining intact, those numbers could again beat expectations. The forward price-to-earnings (P/E) stands at 22x, which makes the chip maker quite cheap. But analyst warnings, which have been mostly incorrect so far, continue to weigh on sentiment, and as a result, the stock hasn’t been able to maintain its run. Net profit margins on a non-GAAP basis increased to 26%, and at these levels of margins, a simple DCF calculation puts the company’s fair value closer to $150-155 indicating an upside of over 50%.
