AMD sees some strength in data centers despite PC market slump
By: Investing.com | November 1, 2022
(Reuters) -Advanced Micro Devices Inc on Tuesday forecast some strength in its data center business and promised to be careful with spending, sending shares up despite business being hit by a deepening PC market slump.
AMD forecast fourth-quarter and full-year revenue below Wall Street estimates, but Kinngai Chan, an analyst at Summit Insights Group, suggested investors were braced for worse.
"While AMD's 4Q22 sales outlook was below consensus expectations, we believe investors are somewhat relieved that AMD expects its data center and embedded businesses to grow sequentially," Chan said.
While AMD is not immune from the PC downturn, Anshel Sag, chip analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, agreed that AMD's data center numbers and excitement over a new graphics chip launch later this week was helping sentiment.
Executives on a conference call also said that the company was prudently controlling expenses and headcount growth.
Shares rose 6.3% in after-hours trade.
AMD, which makes CPUs and graphics processors for PCs and data centers, has been hit hard as inflation hurt consumer demand for laptops and other gadgets, prompting electronics makers to cut orders for its chips.
That led AMD to lower its forecast for third-quarter revenue by about $1 billion last month.
According to Counterpoint Research, PC shipments will decline 13% this year. They fell 19.5% in the third quarter, according to research firm Gartner (NYSE:IT).
“Third quarter results came in below our expectations due to the softening PC market and substantial inventory reduction actions across the PC supply chain," said AMD Chair and Chief Executive Lisa Su, adding that the data center, gaming console, and so-called embedded market helped support growth.
She added that the North American cloud market was the most resilient of the data center market segments, though she did not expect significant recovery of the China data center market in 2023.
The company expects current-quarter revenue to be $5.5 billion, plus or minus $300 million. Analysts on average expect revenue to be $5.85 billion, according to Refinitiv data.
For the full year 2022, AMD expects revenue to be approximately $23.5 billion, plus or minus $300 million, up 43% from 2021, versus analyst expectations of $23.9 billion.
Revenue at its client segment, which includes chips for desktops, fell 40% to $1 billion during the third quarter. While its Data Center revenue was $1.6 billion, up 45% year-on-year.

Earnings Preview: Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD)
By: 24/7 Wall St. | October 31, 2022
• Here is a preview of four companies due to report quarterly results after Tuesday’s closing bell.
AMD
In the past 12 months, shares of chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) have slipped by about 49%. Since reaching a 52-week high in late November, the stock plummeted by nearly 70% to post a 52-week low just two weeks ago.
Citing weakness in the personal computer market, AMD warned early in October that revenue and gross margins would be much lower than previously forecast and that the company would take a charge of around $160 million related to inventory and other issues.
There are 42 analysts covering AMD, and 29 have a Buy or Strong Buy rating while the other 13 rate the shares at Hold. At a share price of around $62.00, the upside potential to a median price target of $90.00 is 45.2%. At the high price target of $200.00, the upside potential is more than 222%.
Consensus estimates call for third-quarter revenue of $5.69 billion, down 13.2% sequentially but up 32.0% year over year. Estimated adjusted EPS of $0.72 would be down almost 32% sequentially and a penny lower year over year. For the full 2022 fiscal year, analysts’ current consensus estimates call for EPS of $3.66, up 31.1%, on revenue of $23.81 billion, up 45%.
AMD stock trades at about 17.0 times expected 2022 EPS, 15.7 times estimated 2023 earnings of $3.96 and 9.9 times estimated 2024 earnings of $4.97 per share. The stock’s 52-week range is $54.57 to $164.46. AMD does not pay a dividend, and total shareholder return over the past year is negative 48.8%.

AMD Slips After Downgraded to Market Perform at Northland on China Headwinds
By: Investing.com | October 31, 2022
Northland Capital Markets analysts downgraded Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) to Market Perform from Outperform with a $60 per share price target, which indicated a downside risk of over 3% relative to Friday’s closing price of $62.01.
The analysts see China headwinds delaying recovery in AMD shares. The demand in China will be “very slow to recover,” they argue, although ARM CPU market share gains are likely to continue in this country.
“We estimate that indigenous Chinese x86 demand is 20% to 25% of worldwide demand, and China-aligned countries likely account for an additional 5%. Indigenous demand in China for client computers has contracted sharply, and server demand has slowed,” they said in a client note.
Moreover, the analysts see increasing competition from Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) as the latter will have “access to better transistors in desktop CPUs in CY23, and laptop and servers in CY24 and at a minimum slow the loss of market share.”
Overall, Northland sits below the consensus on AMD CY23 non-GAAP, revenue, and gross margin estimates.
“We also do not believe many analysts adjusted forward estimates post pre-announcement. While the buyside knows forward estimates are stale, we don’t think investors are prepared for the likely number cuts that are coming when the Company guides CY23 in January,” they concluded.
AMD stock price is down 1.5% in pre-market trading on Monday.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Options Pop Before Earnings
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | October 24, 2022
• Options traders have taken interest in AMD in the last two weeks
• The company reports earnings after the close on Tuesday, Nov. 1
Shares of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) are trading at $58.32, down 0.9% at last glance and adding to an already steep 59.6% year-to-date deficit. The stock's 20-day moving average has moved between support and resistance for much of the year, but has weighed on AMD ever since stunting a late-August rally. While Wall Street will dig through a deluge of Big Tech earnings this week, traders will have to wait until next week for the semiconductor concern to step into the earnings confessional.
The company is slated to report after the close on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The options pits are pricing in a post-earnings swing of 8.5%, which is much larger than the 4.4% post-earnings move the stock averaged over the past two years. AMD was negative following five of these last eight sessions, including a 1.2% drop after its August report.
Amid the downtrend it's faced over the course of the year, Advanced Micro Devices stock is on Schaeffer's Senior Quantitative Analyst Rocky White's list of names that have attracted the highest weekly options volume within the past two weeks. According to this data, 2,942,577 calls and 2,635,962 puts were exchanged in this two-week time period. The October 60 call was the most popular contract by far during this time, followed by the 57 put from the same monthly series.
This reading equates to a 10-day put/call volume ratio of 0.75 over at the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Cboe Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX), which ranks in the 95th percentile of its annual range. In other words, these traders have had a healthier-than usual appetite for long puts in the last 10 weeks, even though calls have outpaced puts on an overall basis.
These options traders are in luck, too, as now seems like an ideal time to weigh in on AMD's next move higher. Advanced Micro Devices stock has usually outperformed volatility expectations, per its Schaeffer's Volatility Scorecard (SVS) ranking of 97 out of 100.

Chart Of The Day: AMD's Decline Could Be Far From Over
By: Investing.com | October 19, 2022
Two and a half months ago, I wrote why AMD may be about to crash. I made the argument that weak guidance will overshadow strong fundamentals.
Sure enough, the company's valuation has plunged since. Advanced Micro Devices' (NASDAQ:AMD) current market cap of $93.57 billion, is down 46%.
Analysts relying solely on fundamentals have been overwhelmingly positive about the company's valuations, expecting it to rise. A Wall Street Journal (WSJ) survey demonstrates that these analysts have become more bullish as the tech giant's market cap slides.
Three months ago, the WSJ had 22 buy versus one sell recommendation. One month ago, that ratio widened to 25 recommending a buy and again 1 to sell. Currently, the WSJ has 27 buys and zero sell recommendations on the stock.
Tipranks shows the same solid consensus: 20 buys versus 1 sell, with an average price target of $97.50, a 56% upside. The highest target is $200, a 73% surge.
My target is $34.
AMD Daily
The stock may be developing a second consecutive rising flag. After the company lost a fifth of its value in three sessions, short sellers quickly locked in profits. The following congestion represents the crowded trade between short sellers buying back the stock and ongoing supply by other short sellers. The downside breakout, like for the first flag, should repeat the move to the downside, as the market uncorks the pattern's trading pressure to the downside once supply drowns out the demand created by the short covering.
The target is, therefore, a $15 downside move from the breakout point, which should be around the low $40s. However, there's more.
AMD Weekly
As I described in my August article, the preceding H&S—Aug. 2, 2021 to Apr. 11, 2022—indicates a much lower target. The H&S height of $65 is the expected downside move from the breakout, as technicals statistically slingshot prices downward proportionately to how far prices stretched the other way. Therefore, the $99 breakout point minus $65 is $34.
Moreover, there is an even larger H&S top at play. Its $90 height seems to suggest a repeat performance from the $74 breakout point. However, that would take the price below $0. I honestly don't have experience with this pattern being larger than a company's stock's previous gains and am therefore not considering this target. This anomaly is another example of market distortions after the significant quantitative easing that took place during the coronavirus pandemic.
Trading Strategies
Conservative traders should wait for the current flag to complete with a downside breakout, or if it blows out, to find resistance by the first flag. Then, wait for resistance confirmation with either flag.
Moderate traders would wait for the same, as well as for the return move, but a closer entry if not for confirmation.
Aggressive traders could short upon the current flag's downside breakout, on a closing basis, or upon a return to the first flag.

AMD A Chip Stock To Buy In This Down Cycle
By: Investing.com | October 7, 2022
• AMD’s latest sales numbers show the slump in demand is much deeper than expected
• AMD stock has lost about 60% of its value this year amid fears of a recession
• AMD has been an analysts’ favorite in both up and down cycles due to the company’s success in grabbing market share
The latest earnings update from the semiconductor manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) shows that the slump in demand is much deeper than it had expected, dashing hopes of a quick recovery in its beaten-down share price.
The California-based AMD late yesterday gave its preliminary sales numbers for the third quarter that missed projections by more than $1 billion. Revenue in the period, which ended on Sept. 30, was about $5.6 billion, lower than the average analyst estimate and the company’s own forecast, which was for $6.7 billion.
The steep decline in sales from one of the most-loved chip-makers shows that the worsening macroeconomic conditions are destroying demand quickly and forcing companies to hold back on their spending. The worst-hit area, according to AMD, is the PC market, where weakening demand and a build-up of inventory are causing chip buyers to move on the sidelines.
AMD Projections
Source: InvestingPro
Recession fears are forcing tech companies to cancel or postpone orders, a sharp reversal from the post-pandemic spending binge, when businesses were building inventories in anticipation of soaring demand.
AMD shares were trading about 8% lower at the time of writing, extending their year-to-date losses to about 56%. These losses are worse than the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which is down 39% this year.
After considerable weakness in the PC segment, investors are closely watching demand signals from cloud-computing, automotive and factory automation to gauge whether the current slowdown is broad-based and could hit areas that have remained solid so far.
These uncertainties are making it hard to call a bottom in the chip sector, which is known for its boom-and-bust cycles and whose fate is so closely tied with the economy.
Still, many analysts believe the current market conditions are well-reflected in the share price of AMD, which trades at 13 times its forward earnings. Bank of America reiterated AMD as a buy after its disappointing sales outlook yesterday.
In an Investing.com poll of 45 analysts, more than 60% still rate AMD as a buy with their 12-month price target, implying a 77% upside potential.
Consensus Estimates For AMD Stock
Stifel, in a recent note to clients, said AMD will continue to expand profitability and market share even in the weakening demand environment when compared with its competitors.
The note says:
“Despite near-term demand volatility, we expect share gains to drive growth well above market, and we expect gross and operating margin expansion to continue, which ultimately, should drive multiple expansion, in our view.”
AMD has been an analysts’ favorite in both up and down cycles due to the company’s success in grabbing market share from the industry titan Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC). Though AMD is not immune to macro headwinds, there are enough reasons to believe that it will be able to sustain its fundamental outperformance.
In a recent note to clients, BMO Capital Markets made similar arguments as the investment bank remains bullish on AMD’s long-term prospects.
According to its note:
“Our view is that we see a path to sustained share gains against Intel...and we do not need Intel to mis-execute for the thesis to work. Our sense is that with the several key architectural innovations the company has made, along with rolling out a lineup of products that has enabled the company to not only close the gap but get ahead in many cases, AMD’s credibility with customers has continued to climb.”
Bottom Line
It’s quite hard to remain bullish on the chip sector in the current environment when demand is shrinking and stock prices are collapsing. But this is the time for long-term investors to go and pick stocks that have the power to get back on a growth trajectory quickly. AMD is one such stock, in my view.

Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD) Q3 Warning a Magnet for Bear Notes
By: Schaeffer's Investment Research | October 7, 2022
• The company lowered its third-quarter sales forecast by roughly $1 billion
• No less than 17 brokerages lowered their price targets
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) is slumping this morning, and taking the rest of the semiconductor sector with it. The company lowered its third-quarter sales forecast by roughly $1 billion to $5.6 billion last night, noting that recent macroeconomic conditions weakened the PC market "significantly" this quarter. The end of strict Covid regulations paired with ballooning inflation has lowered demand across the board for chip stocks, while a number of other catalysts weigh heavily on the sector.
No less than 17 analysts slashed their price targets following the news. The lowest adjustment came from Barclays all the way to $68. Meanwhile, Jefferies predicted that the chip market could be headed for "its deepest downcycle in a decade." The 12-month consensus price target still sits at $108.69, marking an almost 70% premium to last night's close, so the door is still wide open for even more price-target cuts. What's more, of the 26 analysts in coverage, 19 say "buy" or better.
Short-term options traders have also taken a bullish stance lately. This is per AMD's Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio (SOIR) of 0.82, which stands in the relatively low 22nd percentile of its 12-month range. In other words, these traders have been more call-biased than usual.
AMD was last seen down 5.7% at $64.07, a long way from the stock's late-November peak at $164.46. The equity's most recent downturn has been met with resistance at the 20-day moving average since August, and today's drop has the stock trading dangerously close to its Sept. 29, two-year low of $62.83. Year-to-date, AMD has shed 56%.

AMD Shares Down 2% on Disappointing Q3 Preliminary Results
By: Davit Kirakosyan | October 6, 2022
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) shares fell more than 2% after-hours following the company’s announced preliminary financial results for Q3/22.
The company expects Q3 revenue to be approximately $5.6 billion (up 29% year-over-year), compared to its guidance midpoint of $6.7 billion and the consensus estimate of $6.69 billion.
Reduced revenue estimates reflect lower-than-expected Client segment revenue, which is a result of reduced processor shipments due to a weaker-than-expected PC market and significant inventory correction actions across the PC supply chain. In line with the company’s expectations, Data Center, Gaming, and Embedded segments' revenues each increased significantly year-over-year.
Non-GAAP gross margin is expected to be approximately 50%, down from the previously expected 54%, primarily due to lower revenue, driven by lower Client processor unit shipments and average selling price.
“While our product portfolio remains very strong, macroeconomic conditions drove lower than expected PC demand and a significant inventory correction across the PC supply chain,” said AMD Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su.

Goldman Expects AMD to Cut its FY Forecast This Month, Says Headwinds are Priced In
By: Investing.com | October 4, 2022
Goldman Sachs cut price targets on Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) to reflect slashed CPU volume assumptions. The PC market is experiencing near-term weakness; hence estimates are lowered to reflect the ongoing market trends.
The price target on AMD is cut to $88 per share from $112, while GS also expects the chipmaker to cut its full-year revenue and earnings (implied) outlook later this month. Still, the bank remains bullish on AMD shares, looking past these near-term headwinds.
“We believe the near-term headwinds are well-understood at this point, and as such, we maintain our Buy rating on the stock with 33% potential upside to our updated 12-month price target,” GS told clients in a note.
“We foresee share growth in the server CPU market driving above-industry revenue growth and margin expansion for AMD. Importantly, we expect that AMD can maintain its recent momentum in the server CPU market.”
Similarly, Goldman Sachs also slashed the price target on Intel to $24 per share (from $30) while reaffirming the Sell rating.
“We expect the implementation of the CHIPS and Science Act and renewed opex management to only partially offset the decline in earnings and FCF stemming from lower CPU volumes and under-utilization charges.”
AMD and Intel shares are still up 3% and 1.7%, respectively, in pre-open trading Tuesday.

Intel and Advanced Micro Devices Estimates Cut Again at BofA
By: Investing.com | September 22, 2022
In a research note Thursday, a BofA analyst cut estimates on Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) to reflect further deterioration in consumer PC demand and clearing of excess inventory.
The analyst lowered the price target on Intel to $30 from $35, reiterating an Underperform rating, and cut AMD's price target to $100 from $120, keeping a Buy rating.
However, after previous cuts, while the analyst said one more is "unwelcome," they see PC-related cuts "nearing the end," especially for AMD.
Intel's Underperform rating is based on the continued strategic, financial, and competitive challenges it faces, such as the reliance on its PC business, while AMD's Buy argument is focused on its current valuation, data center share gain potential, and execution consistency, the analyst said.
"We continue to see $6 in CY24E EPS power for AMD implying compelling <12x PE for a leading compute franchise," the analyst explained. "We expect data center strength (Genoa ramp) to help offset consumer PC/gaming headwinds. For CY23 we now model 9% YoY growth and $4.47 in pf-EPS which is below consensus at 12% sales growth and $4.86 pf-EPS."
