EAST PRICE HILL — An 8-year-old boy died Saturday after he was fatally shot by his brother in an apparent accident, according to Cincinnati Police Department officials.
The child, Sammy Lorenzo, and his two brothers were visiting an uncle in the 3600 block of La Salle Street when they found a loaded handgun in the house, said Cincinnati police Lt. Don Luck. Believing it was a BB gun, one of the children pulled the trigger, Luck said, and shot his sibling in the chest. An adult in the home, who has not been identified, was not in the room at the time.
After someone in the house called 911 at about 4 p.m., officers arrived at the red, two-story home and found the boy lying on his back in the kitchen. He was rushed into surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he died about two hours later.
One of his siblings “kept telling the story of how it happened, over and over again,” Luck said. “It’s so sad.”
The adult at the house didn’t speak English, so there was a language barrier for officers until other family members arrived to help police sort things out. The children spoke English, Luck said. It was unclear Saturday night whether they live in the area.
No charges are expected against the children, Luck said, and it was too early to speculate whether charges would be filed against the homeowner or the adult in the house.
The death was categorized as a homicide, and the investigation was handed over to homicide detectives.
Dave Schmidt, visiting his brother-in-law down the street, watched police come and go from the house Saturday and lamented the loss of life.
“A handgun shouldn’t have been in that house,” Schmidt said, “especially loaded.”

CINCINNATI (AP) — Road crews in Cincinnati have found the body of a man who police say had been shot multiple times.
Cincinnati police say the city workers found the body of 52-year-old James A. Campbell on a sidewalk shortly before 6 a.m.
Police said in a release that they had no immediate information to release on any suspect.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the police department's criminal investigation section or the local Crimestoppers organization.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Homicide Commander Dave Johnston said two city workers found Campbell's body as they were pre-treating the road for an impending snow storm forecast to move in over the weekend.
