I have always dedicated a portion of my portfolio to very low liquidly plays like APLN that have very large spreads. I always surmised that the large spread could be a good indicator that the float is either low, or locked down. When I find one that I like, I put in extreme low ball limit orders and then just forget about it. Sometimes they fill, and then I do a little more digging.
Kinda sounds like a backwards approach, but when the dollars amounts are as low as what I am spending, it's pretty low risk.
