What will they do when they have to pay DeGrom or Syndergaard $20 million per year? They can't afford it now and would never be able to afford it if they add $40+ million in free agents over the winter. Their plan for this year included having Harvey, Syndergaard and Cespedes produce for a full season, have the team be competitive all year, and sell out Citifield. If that had happened they'd have plenty of money. But it didn't, and now they have to economize.
