Ivanka Inc.

Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, listen onstage at the Lincoln Memorial during a pre-inaugural concert in Washington on Jan. 19.
The first daughter talks about improving the lives of working women. Her father urges companies to “buy American.” But her fashion line’s practices collide with those principles – and are out of step with industry trends.
July 14, 2017
On Inauguration Day, President Trump stood in front of the U.S. Capitol and vowed that his “America First” agenda would bring jobs back to the United States.
“We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs,” he declared, adding: “We will follow two simple rules — buy American and hire American.”
Looking on from the front of the stage was Trump’s daughter Ivanka, the celebrity and fashion entrepreneur who would soon join him in the White House.
The first daughter’s cause would be improving the lives of working women, a theme she had developed at her clothing line. She also brought a direct link to the global economy the president was railing against — a connection that was playing out at that very moment on the Pacific coast.
As the Trumps stood on stage, a hulking container ship called the OOCL Ho Chi Minh City was pulling into the harbor of Long Beach, Calif., carrying around 500 pounds of foreign-made Ivanka Trump spandex-knit blouses.
Another 10 ships hauling Ivanka Trump-branded shoes, cardigans and leather handbags bound for the United States were floating in the north Pacific and Atlantic oceans and off the coasts of Malta, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and Yemen.
Those global journeys — along with millions of pounds of Ivanka Trump products imported into the United States in more than 2,000 shipments since 2010 — illustrate how her business practices collide with some of the key principles she and her father have championed in the White House.

White House unveils ‘Made in America’ week, though many Trump products are made overseas
July 16, 2017
PISCATAWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. — President Trump, whose company outsources the manufacturing of many of its products to overseas factories, is unveiling “Made in America” week at the White House to promote products made in the United States.
In keeping with the “America First” theme of Trump's inauguration, the administration will highlight U.S. manufacturing in the coming week, the latest of its theme weeks orchestrated by aides to bring discipline to the White House and focus Trump's schedule and message on a set of policies.
The week will begin Monday with a “Made in America product showcase” featuring crafts and other items created in each of the 50 states. The president plans to issue a declaration Wednesday and deliver remarks on the importance of making things in the United States. And Saturday, Trump will travel to Norfolk to attend the commissioning of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the first in the Navy's new class of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
“This week the Trump administration will honor the amazing American workers and companies who have products that are made in America,” Helen Ferre, the White House's director of media affairs, told reporters at a briefing here Sunday. She said America sets “the world standard for quality and craftsmanship.”
For Trump, highlighting U.S.-made products is inconsistent with his practices as a businessman. For years, the Trump Organization has outsourced much of its product manufacturing [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2016/08/26/how-many-trump-products-were-made-overseas-heres-the-complete-list/ ], relying on a global network of factories in a dozen countries — including Bangladesh, China and Mexico — to make its clothing, home decor pieces and other items.
Similarly, the clothing line of Ivanka Trump, the president's older daughter and a senior White House adviser, relies exclusively on foreign factories employing low-wage workers in countries such as Bangladesh, Indonesia and China, according to a recent Washington Post investigation [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/politics/ivanka-trump-overseas/ (excerpted just above].
Asked at Sunday's briefing whether “Made in America” week would include a commitment from the Trump Organization or Ivanka Trump's company to make more of their products in the United States, Ferre told reporters, “We'll get back to you on that.”

DHS Provides Additional Foreign Worker Visas on ‘Made in America’ Week

The decision appears to conflict with the president’s often-heated rhetoric on immigration.
Jul 17, 2017
One of the first orders of business of the White House’s “Made in America” week is providing companies the opportunity to hire foreign workers under the H-2B visa program.
The Department of Homeland Security announced Monday that it will add 15,000 seasonal visas to fill H-2B non-agricultural jobs. The annual cap, set by Congress, is 66,000. In its statement, the department said that after consulting with Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta, Secretary John Kelly “determined there are not enough qualified and willing U.S. workers available to perform temporary nonagricultural labor to satisfy the needs of some American businesses in FY 2017.”
[...]
Donald Trump is familiar with the visas as the head of a business empire. A CNN analysis [ http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/18/politics/trump-family-immigration-visas/index.html ] published in April found that Trump businesses received 1,024 H-2B visas since 2000. “Those visas have gone to Mar-A-Lago, Jupiter Gold Club, Lamington Farm and the Trump National Golf Club for jobs like cooks, waiters and waitresses and housekeepers,” the report adds.
During a Republican debate last year, Trump conceded [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/02/25/the-cnntelemundo-republican-debate-transcript-annotated/ ], “As far as the people that I’ve hired in various parts of Florida during the absolute prime season, like Palm Beach and other locations, you could not get help.” He added: “Everybody agrees with me on that. They were part-time jobs. You needed them, or we just might as well close the doors, because you couldn't get help in those hot, hot sections of Florida.”

These Trump voters have buyer's remorse
By Rick Newman
July 14, 2017
Yahoo Finance polled 25,000 Trump voters in late June, and found that 11% of them say they wouldn’t vote for Trump again, with 6% unsure. A large majority of Trump voters said they would vote for their candidate again – yet Trump seems to be losing the swing voters [ https://finance.yahoo.com/news/meet-trump-regretters-wish-change-vote-145438043.html ] who put him over the top in last year’s presidential election, as Alexis Christoforous and I discuss in the podcast [embedded] above.
I interviewed some of those “Trump regretters” to find out why they’ve soured on the candidate they helped put in the White House last November. Some readers ask why we focused on a minority of voters losing faith in Trump, instead of a majority who continue to support him. The answer lies in Trump’s thin margin of victory last November, and even shakier approval ratings now. Trump won the electoral vote last year due to victories in four key swing states – Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan and Wisconsin – where his margin of victory was less than 2%. If Trump has lost that margin – and more, as our poll suggests–it will continue to weaken his political clout, while endangering Republican odds of holding Congress in the 2018 midterms and the White House in the 2020 presidential election.
Some Trump regretters are disappointed the president has engaged in so many petty squabbles that seem to distract him from important business. ““I expected competence,” Fred Wedel, 74, a retired petroleum engineer who lives outside Sacramento, told us. “The only thing I’ve seen is gross incompetence.” Others feel Trump’s policies will harm the working class he promised to help, while cutting taxes for the wealthy. His withdrawal from the Paris climate accord rankles some who voted for him. Others fear they’ll be harmed by GOP efforts to roll back Medicaid or limit healthcare subsidies to lower-income Americans. And some simply can’t abide Trump’s penchant for dishonesty. Alexis and I plumb the issues in the podcast, which we hope you enjoy.

Pope’s Confidantes Pen Blistering Critique Of Steve Bannon’s View of Christianity

Pope Francis meets U.S. President Donald Trump during a private audience at the Vatican, May 24, 2017.
POOL New / Reuters

They did not hold back.

Two of Pope Francis’ close confidantes have published a scathing rebuke of how a certain strand of what they call religious “fundamentalism” has become fused with politics in America.

The Vatican-vetted article, published in the Rome-based Jesuit publication La Civiltà Cattolica [ https://laciviltacattolica.com/june-2017/evangelical-fundamentalism-and-catholic-integralism-in-the-usa-a-surprising-ecumenism/ ], calls out “evangelical fundamentalists” and explicitly mentions President Donald Trump, who identifies as a Presbyterian [ http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2017/politics/state/donald-trump-religion/ ], and his adviser Steve Bannon, who identifies as Catholic [ https://thinkprogress.org/radical-faith-steve-bannon-politics-4d347f068648 ].

The authors of the article are the Rev. Antonio Spadaro, the editor-in-chief of La Civiltà Cattolica, and Rev. Marcelo Figueroa, a Presbyterian pastor who serves as editor-in-chief of an edition of the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano published for Francis’ home country of Argentina.

The article attacks the decades-old partnership between two strands of American Christianity [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/acts-of-faith/wp/2017/07/13/confidant-of-pope-francis-offers-scathing-critique-of-trumps-religious-supporters/ ] - fundamentalist evangelicals and Catholics who are brought together by the “same desire for religious influence in the political sphere.” Although these two groups differ on a number of theological issues, they have come together since the 1980s and 1990s over issues like abortion and same-sex marriage, according to the AP [ http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_REL_VATICAN_US_POLITICS?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2017-07-13-13-39-27 ].

Jesuit Father Antonio Spadaro poses for a portrait session at Villa Malta, the ‘Civilta’ Cattolica’ headquarters on March 28, 2013 in Rome, Italy. Spadaro is a Jesuit writer and theologian, he is also editor in chief of the Catholic paper ‘La Civilta’ Cattolica’ and Pope Francis personal friend, after numerous interviews being held between the two.
Franco Origlia via Getty Images

Spadaro and Figueroa accused this group of misinterpreting verses in the Bible to fit their own political stances on a wide range of topics - from war-mongering to climate change to the idea of America as a “promised land” that is to be defended against all odds.

The authors wrote that these evangelicals and Catholics “condemn traditional ecumenism and yet promote an ecumenism of conflict that unites them in the nostalgic dream of a theocratic type of state.”

One of the most worrisome aspects of this alliance for the pair is how it encourages hatred of different ethnicities and conflates Islam with terrorism. This view of the world stands in stark contrast to Pope Francis’ interfaith outreach and his repeated calls to build bridges, not walls [ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/pope-francis-trump-criticism_us_589c9c4ee4b04061313bfe39 ].

“The most dangerous prospect for this strange ecumenism is attributable to its xenophobic and Islamophobic vision that wants walls and purifying deportations,” the authors wrote.

At one point, Spadaro and Figueroa compared Bannon’s worldview to that of the so-called Islamic State, calling Bannon a “supporter of an apocalyptic geopolitics.” They claim this vision of the world reduces everything to a battle between good and evil, between God and Satan.

Spadaro and Figueroa wrote that the desire of these Christian fundamentalists is to “submit the state to the Bible with a logic that is no different from the one that inspires Islamic fundamentalism.”

“We must not forget that the theopolitics spread by Isis is based on the same cult of an apocalypse that needs to be brought about as soon as possible,” they wrote.

Figueroa is a longtime friend of the pope [ https://cruxnow.com/global-church/2016/07/12/pope-taps-protestant-friend-carry-voice-argentina/ ] and at one point, co-hosted a TV show with Francis for a Catholic channel in Buenos Aires. Figueroa was personally chosen by Francis last year to run the Argentine edition of L’Osservatore Romano.

Spadaro, who like Francis is a Jesuit, has maintained close communication with the pope since Francis’ election. Under his watch, La Civiltà Cattolica has become “one of the foremost vehicles for understanding the views of the current pontificate,” according to the Catholic news organization Crux [ https://cruxnow.com/vatican/2017/07/13/jesuit-journal-close-pope-says-manichean-vision-behind-trump/ ]. The AP reports that the publication has become an “unofficial mouthpiece of the papacy [ http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_REL_VATICAN_US_POLITICS?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2017-07-13-13-39-27 ].”

La Civiltà Cattolica [ https://laciviltacattolica.com/june-2017/evangelical-fundamentalism-and-catholic-integralism-in-the-usa-a-surprising-ecumenism/ ] isn’t an official Vatican news source, but it is reviewed by the Vatican’s Secretary of State before it is published, according to Crux [ https://cruxnow.com/vatican/2017/07/13/jesuit-journal-close-pope-says-manichean-vision-behind-trump/ ].

In contrast to this “apocalyptic” view of politics and religion, the two authors claim that Francis seeks another path. The pope, they say “radically rejects” the idea of creating an actual Kingdom of God here on earth through politics, including at the level of a political “party.”

“Francis wants to break the organic link between culture, politics, institution and Church. Spirituality cannot tie itself to governments or military pacts for it is at the service of all men and women. Religions cannot consider some people as sworn enemies nor others as eternal friends. Religion should not become the guarantor of the dominant classes,” the pair wrote.

No One Cares About Russia in the World Breitbart Made

Donald Trump Jr. at the Republican National Convention last year.
Brian Snyder/Reuters

By JOSHUA GREEN
JULY 15, 2017

The revelation that Donald Trump’s son, son-in-law and campaign manager met with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer promising information that would “incriminate” Hillary Clinton was a true bombshell in an era when we have become almost inured to them. Here was proof that members of Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign had, at the very least, been eager to collude with Russia to influence the 2016 election.

No one could gainsay the facts: Mr. Trump’s own son published them on Twitter.

As recently as five or 10 years ago, every major news outlet would have treated this set of facts as front-page news and a dire threat to Mr. Trump’s presidency. The conservative press and Republican voters might disagree on certain particulars or points of emphasis. But their view of reality — of what happened and its significance — would have largely comported with that of the mainstream. You’d have had to travel to the political fringe of right-wing talk radio, the Drudge Report and dissident publications like Breitbart News to find an alternative viewpoint that rejected this basic story line.

Not anymore. Look to the right now and you’re apt to find an alternative reality in which the same set of facts is rearranged to compose an entirely different narrative. On Fox News, host Lou Dobbs offered a representative example on Thursday night, when he described the Donald Trump Jr. email story, with wild-eyed fervor, like this: “This is about a full-on assault by the left, the Democratic Party, to absolutely carry out a coup d’état against President Trump aided by the left-wing media.”

Mr. Dobbs isn’t some wacky outlier, but rather an example of how over the last several years the conservative underworld has swallowed up and subsumed more established right-leaning outlets such as Fox News. The Breitbart mind-set — pugnacious, besieged, paranoid and determined to impose its own framework on current events regardless of facts — has moved from the right-wing fringe to the center of Republican politics.

It’s a process that’s happened organically. “They have an incredible eye for an important story, particular ones that are important to conservatives and Republicans,” Jeff Sessions, now the attorney general, told me in 2015, explaining how Breitbart News was shaping grass-roots conservative opinion by spreading its message across mediums that party leaders in Washington paid little attention to. “They’ve become extraordinarily influential. Radio talk-show hosts are reading Breitbart every day. You can feel it when they interview you.”

There have been mileposts along the way: the populist revolt on the right that killed bipartisan immigration reform in 2013, the toppling of House Speaker John Boehner in 2015. And, of course, the rise of Mr. Trump, whose attacks on the mainstream media have conditioned his supporters to dismiss as “fake news” any reporting that is critical of him or his administration — Mr. Trump has even criticized the coverage of his son’s Russia liaison, where the basic facts aren’t in dispute, as coming from the “fake media.”

The full scale of this transformation still hasn’t registered, but it’s evident in President Trump’s approval ratings. Despite six months of White House strife, precious few legislative achievements and a metastasizing Russia scandal, Republicans have largely stood by their president. While his national support has dipped below 40 percent, his approval rating within his own party remains strong: Republican support [ http://www.gallup.com/poll/203198/presidential-approval-ratings-donald-trump.aspx ] for the president has hovered around 85 percent since his inauguration. These numbers reflect a shift in Republicans’ disposition, of which Mr. Trump is both a major cause and the main beneficiary.

So far, there’s little sign that the president’s approval rating with Republicans is in danger of eroding. Earlier this month, a congressional source told me, Democratic strategists looking at a Republican-held swing district that is expected to be in play in next year’s midterm elections were shocked when a private poll they conducted showed that Republican support for Mr. Trump in the district is even stronger now than it was on Election Day.

A number of factors have been put forward to explain President Trump’s unexpected resilience. One line of argument is that he’s being buoyed by Republican lawmakers who could abandon him if they lose faith in his ability to deliver results. “The relationship has always been largely transactional,” the G.O.P. strategist Alex Conant told RealClearPolitics [ https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2017/07/13/why_gop_lawmakers_are_sticking_with_trump_134459.html ] this month. “Republicans in Congress can pass laws, and Trump can sign them. Therefore, it’s mutually beneficial.”

Another argument holds that Mr. Trump’s efforts to discredit mainstream outlets, echoed by the right-wing media, have stripped his followers of their ability to distinguish what’s real from what isn’t.

Both arguments have merit. But the transformation of the Republican mind-set encompasses more than just news or politics. Andrew Breitbart, the founder of Breitbart News, liked to say that “politics is downstream from culture.”

Culture has always been a driving obsession of the conservative underworld of Breitbart and its ilk. “Andrew was always more interested in changing the culture than he was in changing what was going on in Washington,” Steve Bannon, who ran Breitbart News and is now Mr. Trump’s chief White House strategist, once told me. (Mr. Bannon left his position at Breitbart News in August of 2016 to take over the Trump campaign.)

One reason that an alternative view of reality has taken such deep root among Republicans is that they seem to be focusing more on the broader culture. Last week a new Pew Research Center poll showed that a majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents now believes [ http://www.gallup.com/poll/203198/presidential-approval-ratings-donald-trump.aspx ] that colleges and universities — the flash point of our current culture wars — have a negative effect on the country. This number is up sharply from the 45 percent who agreed with this same statement last year.

If you look at the other side of the aisle, about three-quarters of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents consistently say that colleges and universities have a positive effect on the country.

As American politics has become more polarized and tribal, it’s gotten harder to shake voters from their partisan loyalties. At least so far, the news that Donald Trump Jr. was prepared to accept Russian help to subvert a United States election doesn’t appear to have changed this state of affairs. If you’re not a Republican, watching Republicans react to the news can feel a bit like witnessing a mass hallucination. Even more so when some emissary from the alternate Republican universe like Kellyanne Conway teleports onto CNN or another mainstream outlet to state her case.

There’s no guarantee that this will endure. Even on Fox News, there are scattered signs that the latest Russia developments may finally be breaking through — at least to a few folks. “This was a bungled collusion,” the Fox pundit Charles Krauthammer said the other night, noting that he had previously been sympathetic to the White House line. “It undoes the White House story completely.”

But of course the conservative ranks have always included principled NeverTrumpers, whose resistance to the Republican drift has been mostly ignored by the rank and file. Don Jr.’s travails will be a good test of the resiliency of the new Republican worldview. If special counsel Robert Mueller finds evidence of Russian collusion, it will be followed by a bigger test measuring just what it takes to snap out of a mass hallucination.

White House releases sensitive personal information of voters worried about their sensitive personal information
July 14, 2017
The White House on Thursday made public a trove of emails it received from voters offering comment on its Election Integrity Commission. The commission drew widespread criticism when it emerged into public view [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/06/29/trumps-voter-fraud-commission-wants-to-know-the-voting-history-party-id-and-address-of-every-voter-in-america/ ] by asking for personal information, including addresses, partial social security numbers and party affiliation, on every voter in the country.
It further outraged voters by planning to post that information publicly.
Voters directed that outrage toward the Trump White House and the voter commission, often using profanity-laced language in the 112 pages of emails released this week.
“You will open up the entire voting population to a massive amount of fraud if this data is in any way released,” one voter wrote.
“Many people will get their identity stolen, which will harm the economy,” wrote another.
“I respectfully request, as an American-born citizen legally eligible to vote for two decades, that you leave my voter data and history alone, do not publish it, and do nothing with it,” said another.
Unfortunately for these voters and others who wrote in, the Trump administration did not redact any of their personal information from the emails before releasing them to the public. In some cases, the emails contain not only names, but email addresses, home addresses, phone numbers and places of employment of people worried about such information being made available to the public.
The Washington Post is not publishing any of this information because in most cases it does not appear that the individuals were aware their comments would be shared by the White House. The emails were sent to the Election Integrity Commissions' email address that the administration asked [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/files/2017/06/PEIC-Letter-to-Connecticut-1.pdf ] U.S. secretaries of state to send data files to.
“This request is very concerning,” wrote one. “The federal government is attempting to get the name, address, birth date, political party, and social security number of every voter in the country.” That email, published by the White House, contained the sender's name and home address.
“DO NOT RELEASE ANY OF MY VOTER DATA PERIOD,” wrote one voter whose name and email address was published by the White House.
“Beefed up the security on this email address yet?” asked another voter whose name and email address were also published by the White House.
“The request for private voter information is offensive,” wrote one voter whose name, home address and email address were published by the White House.
“I removed my name from voter rolls. And I'm a Republican!” wrote one voter whose name was published by the White House.

Turkey Dismisses Thousands of Police, Civil Servants, and Academics

Soldiers accused of attempting to assassinate President Erdogan on the night of the failed coup are escorted to court on July 13, 2017.
The announcement comes ahead of the one-year anniversary of an attempted coup against the Turkish government.
Jul 14, 2017
More than 7,000 police officers, civil servants, and academics in Turkey have been dismissed from their jobs according to a new executive decree published on the government’s Official Gazette website. The decree was reportedly authorized on June 5, but did not become public until Friday. The announcement comes a day before the one-year anniversary of a failed coup against the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In the wake of the coup, around 150,000 officials have been dismissed from their posts and more than 50,000 people have been jailed. Recent arrests have targeted [ http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/14/europe/turkey-failed-coup-arrests-detained/index.html ] police, military personnel, court officials, teachers, and journalists.
Friday’s decree represents the latest purge of state institutions—an act Erdogan claims is necessary to control security threats and prevent another insurgence. Meanwhile, many members of the international community argue that the dismissals and arrests are a way for Erdogan to silence political dissidents. In total, 7,563 people were dismissed on Friday, including 2,303 police officers and 302 university academics. Another 342 retired army personnel were also stripped of their ranks, the state-owned Anadolu news agency reported. According to the decree, the employees either acted “against the security of the state” or were deemed “members of a terrorist organization.”
Since 2016, numerous state employees, and even foreigners, have been accused of belonging to a terrorist group or plotting to kill President Erdogan. Earlier this month, eight human-rights activists and two foreign trainers were detained [ https://www.theatlantic.com/news/archive/2017/07/turkish-police-detain-rights-activists-on-suspicion-of-terrorism/532851/ ] in Istanbul on suspicion of belonging to an “armed terrorist organization.” A month earlier, the chairman of Amnesty International’s Turkey branch, Taner Kilic, was arrested [ http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-40236174 ] for his suspected ties to Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish preacher whom the government accuses of instigating the coup. The Turkish government has since branded Gulen’s social and religious movement as a terrorist group, known as the Fethullah Gulen Terrorist Organization, or FETO. In April, The New York Times reported [ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/13/magazine/inside-turkeys-purge.html ] that Turkish authorities use several pieces of evidence to determine whether someone is a member of FETO, including employment at a Gulen-affiliated institution, sending children to a Gulen-affiliated school, subscribing to the Gulen newspaper, or owning Gulen’s books.

TIME Cover Photoshops Hitler Mustache On Trump Jr

6 months in, a record low for Trump, with troubles from Russia to health care (POLL)

[ http://ijr.com/the-response/2017/07/921939-trump-unpopular-president-history-polling-6-months/ (with comments)]
Jul 16, 2017
Americans give President Donald Trump [ http://abcnews.go.com/topics/news/donald-trump.htm ] the lowest six-month approval rating of any president in polls dating back 70 years, punctuated by questions about his competence on the world stage, his effectiveness, the GOP [ http://abcnews.go.com/topics/news/us/republican-party.htm ] health care plan and Russia’s role in the 2016 election.
Just 36 percent of Americans polled in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll approve of Trump’s job performance, down 6 points from his 100-day mark, itself a low. The previous president closest to this level at or near six months was Gerald Ford [ http://abcnews.go.com/topics/news/history/gerald-ford.htm ], at 39 percent, in February 1975.

Poll finds Trump’s standing weakened since springtime

July 16, 2017
President Trump’s standing with the American people has deteriorated since the spring, buffeted by perceptions of a decline in U.S. leadership abroad, a stalled presidential agenda at home and an unpopular Republican health-care bill, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll [ https://www.washingtonpost.com/page/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2017/07/16/National-Politics/Polling/release_480.xml ].
Approaching six months in office, Trump’s overall approval rating has dropped to 36 percent from 42 percent in April. His disapproval rating has risen five points to 58 percent. Overall, 48 percent say they “disapprove strongly” of Trump’s performance in office, a level never reached by former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and reached only in the second term of George W. Bush in Post-ABC polling.
Almost half of all Americans (48 percent) see the country’s leadership in the world as weaker since Trump was inaugurated, compared with 27 percent who say it is stronger. Despite the fact that Trump campaigned as someone skilled at making deals that would be good for the country, majorities also say they do not trust him in negotiations with foreign leaders and in particular Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Just over one-third of all Americans say they trust the president either “a great deal” or “a good amount” in any such foreign negotiations. Asked specifically about Trump-Putin negotiations, almost 2 in 3 say they do not trust the president much, including 48 percent who say they do not trust the president “at all.”
