"Kim did figure it out."

That is still yet to be seen. The fact is Kim Thompson had still NOT mass produced, let alone prove he can do it profitably.

Heck, I'm not sure he's even supplied any potential customers with samples yet with exception of the army and that was mere strands. Yet, Kim has been yammering for years about how so many companies are asking for samples. He's been quick to PR that constantly. That's all he's been able to offer us: he keeps telling us the demand is there. That does no one any good when there's nothing to supply.

So yeah , Kim has not figured it out yet.
