The Real Scandal Is Still Russia

U.S. President Donald Trump meets with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, left, next to Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergei Kislyak at the White House in Washington, Wednesday, May 10, 2017.

Donald Trump is trying to give the Russians everything they want. That’s scarier than his possible obstruction of justice.

Trump-Comey Feud Eclipses a Warning on Russia: ‘They Will Be Back’

An image of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia was projected on a screen during an economic forum in St. Petersburg this month. There is no evidence that Russia has stopped trying to meddle in the American electoral system.

There’s no indication Comey violated the law. Trump may be about to.
June 9, 2017 Updated June 9, 2017
President Trump’s declaration that the Thursday testimony of former FBI director James B. Comey was a “total and complete vindication [ ]” despite “so many false statements and lies” was the sort of brashly triumphant and loosely-grounded-in-reality statement we’ve come to expect from the commander in chief. It was news that came out a bit later, news about plans to file a complaint against Comey for a revelation he made during that Senate Intelligence Committee hearing meeting, that may end up being more damaging to the president.

Trump Hands Comey a New Weapon
Having accused the former FBI director of perjury, the president now must prove it—or surrender his credibility.
June 9 2017
Donald Trump typically claims that anyone who makes him look bad is nothing more than a rotten liar. Political opponents [ http://www.politico.com/story/2016/10/trump-clinton-liar-nuclear-weapons-third-debate-230022 ], beauty queens [ https://www.bostonglobe.com/news/politics/2016/09/30/donald-trump-doubles-down-insulting-alicia-machado/h42NpQ5APmyT9MSAs5EKHN/story.html ], alleged victims of sexual assault [ https://verdict.justia.com/2016/11/02/trump-wont-win-defamation-suit-plaintiff-lose-defendant ]: Trump dismisses them all as fibbers and fabricators, spewing malicious falsehoods to besmirch his character and hurt his agenda. It was therefore no surprise that, following James Comey’s extraordinarily damaging testimony [ http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2017/06/08/the_comey_hearing_was_extraordinary.html ] on Thursday, Trump accused [ ] the former FBI director of issuing “many false statements and lies” to the Senate Intelligence Committee. He then repeated this allegation at a Friday press conference and offered to go under oath [ http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2017/06/09/donald_trump_accuses_comey_of_lying_under_oath.html ] to contradict Comey.
But not all lies are created equal—and Trump’s charge is not just a mere deflection, designed to dull the impact of Comey’s testimony before it fades away altogether. Even if he meant it that way, Trump has still accused Comey of perjury, a federal crime that undermines our legal system and carries serious penalties. He likely doesn’t realize the severity of this accusation; he routinely throws perceived enemies under the bus for the sake of political expediency. But this time, his habit will backfire. The president’s reckless barb is certain to escalate the conflict between the two men. And Trump has already given Comey the upper hand.

Top criminal law expert joins special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe
June 9, 2017
One of the federal government’s top criminal law specialists is joining the investigation by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III centered on possible coordination between President Trump’s associates and Russian officials.
Justice Department deputy solicitor general Michael Dreeben, who has argued more than 100 cases before the Supreme Court, is the department’s go-to lawyer on criminal justice cases and is highly respected by Democrats and Republicans because of his encyclopedic knowledge of criminal law.
Dreeben will work part time for Mueller, according to Justice officials, while he continues to oversee the department’s criminal appellate cases.
Former and current Justice Department officials say that Mueller’s recruitment of Dreeben shows how serious he is about the investigation and signals complexities in the probe.
“Michael is the most brilliant and most knowledgeable federal criminal lawyer in America — period,” said Walter Dellinger, a law professor at Duke University School of Law and acting solicitor general for the 1996-1997 term of the Supreme Court.

Jeff Sessions to Appear Before Senate Intelligence Committee Tuesday
Jun 10 2017
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a letter on Saturday that he will appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee to answer questions raised by recent testimony of former FBI director James Comey.
Sessions said in a letter to the House and Senate appropriations subcommittees that he has accepted an invitation to appear on Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is probing allegations of Russian attempts to interfere with the presidential election.
Sessions was scheduled to appear before the House and Senate appropriations subcommittees that day, but said in the letter that some members had publicly stated their intentions to question him about issues related to the R
"In light of reports regarding Mr. Comey's recent testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, it is important that I have an opportunity to address these matters in the appropriate forum," Sessions said in the letter dated Saturday.
The timing of Sessions’ appearance before the intelligence panel — and whether it will be an open or closed session — was not immediately clear. Sessions said the Senate Intelligence Committee is most appropriate because it "has access to relevant, classified information."
Comey, in his highly anticipated testimony about his firing by President Donald Trump, seemed to suggest [ http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/jeff-sessions-trouble-n770336 ] the attorney general had an undisclosed Russia problem.
