Photonic chips (PICS) in the future will be in smartphones.

We want the smart phone to be able to measure your blood, to measure your saliva, to mix it, to create centrifuges on the chip, to provide manipulation at the nano scale.



Lebby discussed this potential application in his presentation.

They are interacting with the world, they are analysing chemicals. You've really got a laboratory on a chip, and that laboratory is integrated into your smart phone.



The mid-infrared is a range of frequencies or wavelengths that we don't typically deal with because we can't see it, but we've created a photonic chip that would go in your smart phone, it would incorporate a light source and a spectrometer and it would allow your phone to detect pollution in the atmosphere. This is going to become more and more important as we are understanding the implications of pollution on our health.
