borusa: This is the INTEL board...

AMD surely is more competitive but you guys overlook a lot of details. One interesting trend is that retail refreshes are occuring more slowly. And You find haswell and 6th generation parts still floating around. It used to be critical for retailers to refresh their lineups quickly. I actually remember a particular retailer that got burned on a bout 10 million dollars of inventory because they didn't get rid of old 386 and 486 units in the Pentium era. But now things are different. That means that for AMD to win new sockets, it will take longer. There are still no Ryzen PCs in the biggest retailers for example. According to AMD those design wins are coming later this year. But then you must ask the question: are they winning new sockets or are they winning their old and maybe raising their ASP a little bit. Intel is still very entrenched in HP, DEll, Lenovo lineups. Sure they make take a flyer on a system or 2 but for AMD to gain real marketshare they have to prove that they can keep up with demand. Then they need to create a buzz that reaches consumers. Sure enthusiasts know about Ryzen but Joe Blow thinks AMD is a has been and they see Intel commercials with Jim Parsons everyday.

And in servers things move at a glacial pace. It appears AMD does have some room there and they have zero marketshare. But they have to PROVE themselves even more because they blew it for 10 years. And yeah apparently DropBox tried them out. But they need REAL commitments to do anything significant. And big server users need months to test things out. So IF AMD is competitive(and remember it is only one part of the server market so far) AND they get commitments AND they can meet demand, they have a chance but it will TAKE YEARS. And lets not forget the fact that AMD was VERY late with Ryzen and the launch was shakey at best. The press loves that AMD is finally sort of back in the game but they have overlooked many many slipups. They need years of solid executuion to really change things. And that is not in that companies DNA.
