PS: I think excel has the best answer at this point and just cover your beds with maybe 4 inches of straw. I protect my garlic with 4 straw just before the first hard frost.
I also have row covers that will protect a little again a hard frost.
Most of my gardens are under a foot of snow; you're way warmer than New England.
