Slight historic correction:

The 'platform worm' was bred (not altered directly) artificially to create a base worm genome that was efficiently edited.

The "Platform Worm" as referred to by KBLB was a genetically altered line.
KBLB knocked out (deleted) all the silk producing genes in some of the precursors of the Monster Worm thereby producing a silkworm that does not spin a cocoon at all.
Surprisingly, these silkworms are viable and will pupate and reproduce successfully without a cocoon if they are kept in a friendly environment.

The stated purpose behind this was to produce a biologic factory platform that could be used to produce any number of drugs and complex biologicals beyond the ability of bacterial or yeast fermentation.
To Date (AFAIK) nothing more has been done with this line, but it remains as one more arrow in KBLB's quiver.
