Comparisons are often made between the development of penicillin and the development of these so called nanoviricides, stating development time for important drugs takes many years, possibly decades.

I wonder though, how much money Drs. Fleming, Florey, Chain, et al made while they were working on penicillin. Were they wealthy men during the commercialization stage? Did they vacation in Hawaii every year?
