FL is from the DuPont/Corning good old boys club (always has been a revolving door here with DuPont) and the connection which brought the glow worm material to the company. He has his pride and reputation on the line with the goo from Corning. It may work but is not groundbreaking. Why do you think it has been sitting on the back shelf at Corning all these years? Why did they give it to the company for nothing?

Useful idiot is a term for people perceived as propagandists for a cause whose goals they are not fully aware of, and who are used cynically by the leaders of the cause.
