I think their advantage is our delay.
Being a "factory made" product allows them to easily find a location.

Using a yeast or ecoli allows them easy regulation approval since there is a wide spread practice of these organisms being GMOs.

We are restricted to locations suitable to silkworms and regulations over modified animals in those areas.

If silkworms were suitable to the northern USA we would already be in production.

They have to figure out how to actually make the usable fibers at a feasible price.
We have to get a government to actually make a decision.

Apparently its a close race at this point.
They have a fiber that isnt really a feasible fiber, and we have government approval that isnt really approval.
