Usually this will be nothing more than a pre-market bid put in place by someone wishing to beat the market's upcoming gyrations by placing a trade while the rest of us are asleep. The market maker must display the potential trade particulars.

Last night, well after trading had ceased for the day, I placed an order to buy shares in a company I've been accumulating heavily over the past two weeks. Rather than upset the market by conspicuously trying to execute buys during trading hours and thus risk driving the share price higher, I hoped to gently enter my bid while unnoticed.

As luck would have it, the order didn't fill so I guess I'm the only one who was asleep. lol
