Agree at one time Repub presidential candidates were civil while remaining competitive...there's no doubt Newt Gingrich brought a new and ugly kind of politics to DC and with help from a major TV cable network low-informed voters suddenly got an out-sized voice in the GOP - witness know-nothing Sarah Palin the GOP's choice for VP!
There's no doubt when a black man moved into the white house in '08 most of the South went nuts and became determined to demonize him and anyone who supports him but the black man won re-election, sending the South into deep depression. Their only recourse was to support one of their own extremists - enter Donald Trump and Ben Carson.
