There has been some major problems and that is an unwillingness to compromise and demonizing the other side. The Demonizing the other side has always been around in local elections but typically tamped down for the most part in statewide and national elections. However once elected until Newt came to town there was civility. Newt changed that and it has gone down hill since at a rapid pace. The unwilling to compromise has hit new lows with stopping all legislation even ones in which was supported and proposed by the Republican Party. Once a black man got elected they lost their minds, especially the politicians from the South and they refused to work with almost everything proposed by Obama.
Once Citizens United happened then all hell broke loose and any billionaire can support any nut that agrees with them. Social conservatives by their very nature that welcomes hating something is not very high on the IQ scale and have found a home in the Republican party since Civil Rights passed. It's a sad commentary as they as a group are easily led by con artists like Cruz, Trump, and Carson.
