Mastering the origins of conviction, one key stroke at a time

I started this news portal to add … commentary, update news flow with insightful and actionable opinions that are intelligent, fit to print and SEC compliant.

Wall Street has dramatically slashed its ranks of analysts providing research but, scientific platforms and industry sectors need to be better researched for conviction ideas. As an industry veteran, I am continually mortified about the gross inaccuracies of message boards that deal with fiction, inaccurate prognostications and rants. No one wants to run afoul of the SEC’S regulations on corporate communication and analyst reporting. I have included regulatory disclaimers and my privacy policy on the blog to reflect my personal opinions about such subject sectors or companies. The role of an analyst and journalist should also increase transparency placing a face on the plethora of information in cyberspace; so my comments are interpretations and synthesis about such industry specifics.

Scimitar Equity’s research news portal has distinct advantages - i.e. timeliness and actionable intelligence over I-Banks research which remains only geared to institutional investors and legacy processes.

During the past years, blogging has simplified the process of publishing, enabling anyone with an internet connection to share views, information and intelligence. With millions of blogs engaged in posting of news and analysis applicable to industry sectors, universes and markets, blogging has become more accepted, mainstream, collaborative and participatory.

The net result is … mainlining investor intelligence with up to the minute updates.

However, reflecting this shift, many I-Banks still continue to restrict access. Based on these changes in communication and the rise of the individual investor, I’ve elected to start aggregating more content and quantitative models. The development of blogs into a rapid information news portal delivery format poses a growing challenge to established parts of I-Bank research and PR firms (in relation to press releases) which have traditionally functioned as gatekeepers to investing audiences and news flow. Institutional investors are not abandoning I-Bank research but many investors are increasingly reviewing journalist/blogging posts.

Press releases still just state the facts but don’t define any relevance to the actual value of a release –due to SEC forward looking parameters. However, structural changes brought about by the blogosphere have produced pressure causing independent research firms to expand their capacity in social media to … supplement, measure and monitor relevance of company market perception.

The growing influence of a news portal in the blogosphere in relation to SEC rules, I believe imposes better accountability, disclosure and transparency. Individually, sector journalist/bloggers, such as I, devote much more time and effort to translate data to get it “right” which strengthens my opinion and prognostication since under REG AC, “I certify …” just like traditional research products.

Finally; erroneous, uneducated or irresponsible blogging can be transformed into a digital liability that affect … anonymous attribution of non de plume, pen name or pseudonym blogs such as SeekingAlpha.

The Bottom Line: There is growing realization that digital news cannot be controlled and the best course of action is to engage with the blogosphere … this points towards a new politic of communication that should force markets to accept a higher degree of accountability and transparency. A news portal still needs to be cognizant of the existing FCC and SEC disclosure regulations as they pertain to advertising and promotion. As tough as the past year has been, the current US regulatory environment as it applies to the role of investment research is now being supplemented by social media … as this medium offers a more timely, fluid and dynamic environment.

My motto … never leave an investor uninformed! I say today what others won’t, so you can do what others can’t.
